- When Tas Careaga first saw his 16th-century church it was advertised for sale as a “land plot with build-in ruins”. Abandoned for decades - the town has 6 other churches for a population of 2000 - it was being sold by the local bishopric for very little, but the new owner was required to rebuild it.
Careaga and friends spent 3 months just clearing the structure of debris before starting work to turn the relic into a home.
With help from his architect friend Carlos Garmendia, Careaga preserved the open-feeling of the space by adding only one wall (for a bathroom on the 2nd floor). The cupola now houses a very high-ceilinged kitchen with art gallery walls.
Most of the church celebrates the 10-meter (30-foot) ceilings created 5 centuries ago. In about a quarter of the space, Careaga built a wooden frame to house two open-air floors for a 2nd-floor bedroom and 3rd-floor office. Instead of walls or banisters, the first floor relies on just three thin metal cables for the protection of occupants.
The home is deeply personal, filled with furniture from Careaga’s family, religious art from his grandmother, and idiosyncrasies like a slackline to cross the thirty-foot-drop between the office and a secret bedroom above the cupola. Careaga spent 3 years converting the church to his home with mostly his own labor and help from friends. He continues to add new touches, like converting the bell tower into a reading nook and bunk room for guests.

Seeing the "before" footage really makes this jawdropping.
I like that this isnt just some rich guy showing off his architech's work,
it's a dude who's really proud of his own project that really came together great.
Uh hes rich
im from the basque country, and believe me, if you have a place like that in the basque country it means that you are rich. It's still very fascinating that with all that money he still choose a different way. Good for him.
@@swieseldorf I think they meant it's not some rich guy showing off the work of his architect, but a rich guy showing off HIS hard work and project.
If they did that with a mosque they will be beheaded!!!
@@renzoqu You don't need to be rich when buying a church, if its in ruin and you bought it from the church.
What a group of friends.. these people are geniuses
This one is a stunning view into many lives well lived. Tas, you are now my new motivator.
Astonishing project. It not just architecture, this is art.
I’ve seen thousands of home videos. This home is a dream for me. Thank you for showing this.
This church house is my very favorite!! I lived in Northern Spain as a child in 1956-59…..the most prized time of my childhood! I love your house/ studio…I am an artist as well.
Fantastic. Vids like this is exactly why I love this channel.
Yup! I've been following Kirsten for years! Almost a decade.
Anyone else have their heart in their mouth watching him climb around that building?
oh yeah...I was like ftf man :)
It’s a home for peeps who are n’ t boozers
Wow what a place! Such a joy to watch this. Thanks!
i don't like tha kind of wall went i walk by and blush it... it like a sandpapaer...
Un estilo sumamente espanol, super contemporaneo y super antiguo a su vez.... bravo! Un proyecto maravilloso
Spain is beautiful. North to South, east to west.
Love the black roof he chose for this stunning structure - perfection! Equally impressive is the art & mechanical design in all of the "no-touch" elements - this took many hours of strategic thought & determination to get it right. Love all of the artwork! Muchas gracias!
Awesome that Careaga saved a dilapidated church & with his architect rebuild into a house he envisioned. TQ Kirsten & family for showing this exquisite home.
I LOVEEEEEEE at the end that he said "all the paintings and furniture has significance/meaning. Nothing is just bought" that is EXACTLY the philosophy I live by and how I furnish my home!!!! It's so unique to actually be unique in this day in age!!!!!!
This is one of my favorite “episodes” of this channel. I appreciate you making this a longer episode. Also the kitchen in the altar was inspired to the point of destiny
In Scotland there is so many churches teken by private landlords.... But they made bars or offices.
I really like this Basque country church so much. I hope they will inspire and do the same thing here
I am speechless. What can I say! Congratulations for taking care of this historic building. The artist in you shows throughout the structure. Thank you for keeping it and showing respect. Enjoy it.
Man, I see places like this and it looks like a dream. The whole area and the building, the rebuild style, everything is so unachievable for almost everyone. Very lucky man.
Yup, thats why i sadly did stop watching these videos. For someone like me that never is going to be able to do something like this, or to live in a place like this one, its pointless and it only gives me pain. He said it was cheap to rebuild, but what "cheap" is for someone, its "really expensive and not affordable" to many many others like me lol.
@@reerjgiorge Guys you sound like you have such low expectations. I learned how to do stone masonry in a few months. You can make your own house with big thick stone walls. Then you can extend it a few years later when you have more money. It is possible....
Churches and chateaus all over europe are being sold for dirt cheap or free, and some counties will even fund the restoration of an old building if you have good plans and will do it in the original style. It can be done for cheap, but you’ll have to live maybe hours away from a city, in a country you don’t speak the language of, dealing with setbacks and delays because old buildings are unpredictable. It can be done with very little money, it’s just a very difficult thing to do, you won’t have a cool contemporary renovated building in the same amount of time it takes to build a pre-fab.
@@JohnPorsbjerg Exactly. I live in the city in Canada. If I wanted to restore an old church in rural Italy, I'd have to spend a lot of money just on living there for many months (if not years), without any income. That alone makes something like this impossible. He said just cleaning out the inside of the building took 3 months.
@@reerjgiorge Think he said the church was cheap to buy but the rebuild was expensive.
I couldn’t live/feel comfortable in this place but total respect to him. Love his passion and it’s great to regenerate old buildings.
Thank you Kirsten for all these beautiful homes, you bring us new ideas and beauties.
I watch architecture videos all the time. This is by far the most unique, spectacular place I have ever seen!
What an absolutely excellent restoration
I have never been such a deep shade of green in my life. This is my idea of the PERFECT home. Beeeaaauutiful!! Congratulations!
Woww..just amazing transformation..the owner is truly blessed!👍😇
The place is phenomenal! So much hard work and personality makes it truly a dream project. Thank you so much for all you do to present these to the public! May you continue to be blessed with happiness in safe, healthy travels. 🙏🏼😊❤️
His respect for the old while doing something new as well as personal is unmistakable. Commendable 'no touching the wall' decision.
You are marvellous! You will be blessed for saving that church because life itself is a worship...cooking friends and love!
This just inspired me so much! As somebody who dreams of a little restoration of a family place in rural Croatia, your channel gives me so much joyyyy. I also love your editing and filming style 💃🏻❤️🤩
isto....nadam se da cemo uspjeti
Odličan kanal 👌
I loved Croatia
Niti ne pomišljajte na nešta takvo!!!
Imate masonske hramove, sinagoge, srpske hramove i đamije,možda vam oni odstupe!
have you heard of Murter island?
Amazing place.....fantastic.....when an artist rebuilds there are so many cool ideas and concepts.....thank you for the film 🙏
I love how he stayed true to the origins of the church and yet made a wonderfully livable abode. And workplace.
This renovation is Brilliant - I could compliment a thousand details but I think in total, it works so well because Tas approached it with respecting the original structure as much as possible - from the structure to the works from his Abuela; he allowed the artifacts to bless the home in every way. The aspects he added are both functional but unique still. There is so much in the space but still it doesn't overrwhelm or appears cluttered. Wonderful!
This is absolutely amazing! This is probably my favorite home you’ve ever toured. It’s really inspiring and triggers my imagination. I don’t think I’d ever take on a new project and leave that beautiful church behind. Very, very cool!
LOVE it - so sweet - yet each part well considered - so much hard work - but absolutely fresh & joyful.. Thank you for sharing this place.
this is a man of great taste and daring soul.. i like it :)
@@fionaaron3854 💒 Well, his buying & renovating an ancient church ruin. Also creating that crazy "bridge" to guest room. Building that outdoor shower. Those are all pretty 💪courageous in my book.
🖼Beautiful gallery home. Although I wonder about his 🔌energy bill...💰!

I like how he described what he is doing with old building, stuff he made by himself, its awesome...
what a beautiful collection of art ... i salute the guy for what he's got and how he's done that
This isn't just a home. It's an amazing inspiring home. WOW it's fabulous. It's impossible to pick the detail I like the most, but if pushed I think the wooden spiral staircase with the wooden rectangles as the handrail. Felt like some of the ancient castle staircases but re-imagined.
This is amazing. Love the space plus all the prayers that have been said in there I'd feel blessed everyday.
WOW! Such a BEAUTIFUL labor of love!
This is just unbelievable. I love how he respects the original stonework so much that he declined to use hooks for his artwork. Stunning home.
Extremely creative and what an inspiring project!
11:46 the drone crashed. Did any1 notice lmao
😂
Can't stand before such a horror.
Hahaha oh my gosh I went back to see it crash now I’m 😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣☠️☠️
If they did tht with a. Mosque they will be beheaded!!!
ahahaha totally didnt notice
BY FAR - my FAVORITE !!!!!!!!!!!!! I LIVED IS A CHURCH like this in KEY WEST ! its a special thing.
fantastic combination of vision, passion and hard work; awesome place to live in. Congrats!
This video is one of your best. This guy is obviously an artist. He has created a lovely space that honors the old church.
I love this. innovation is done when you intersect the old with the new. much respected the original building. this is the dream home/studio
I already thought this guy was incredible before I saw the slack line but once I saw that...I was just floored. Mad respect!
7:14 i like how the empty frame above the sink in place of a mirror suggests that the person washing their hands is a piece of art
It's so nice to have someone love the old and really needed it to be as he found it. The heavy wood is a complement to the old and new...and just so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your sweet home with me
It’s really difficult to make a place like this feel a comfortable house, but he succeeded in every way. What a beautiful house to live in. 💝
I love this. One of my absolute favourites so far.
I am in love with this! And I love Tas, he was so chatty and interesting
One of the coolest things I’ve seen on RUclips. Hands down.
15:08 "You can confess here, in front of the wine" !!!! And he has the curtain as well! Priceless!
Gorgeous, and respectful of the original building. Amazing!
Beautiful home. I love the structure of the church
A work of art and true passion for culture and ancestry. Love it!
Amazing transformation. Love the way he lives with that incredible art collection.
What a joy to watch! Not only a great undertaking to turn an old church into a home, but the owner has so much fun doing and living in it! Kudos to him and continued joy!
The placement of the kitchen is actually really fitting: it is where you sustain and nourish your body.
No thats where they cook the food, they eat at the table.
UNBELIEVABLE ! ! ! I CAN ONLY SAY A VERY BIG BRAVO .
Aloha to the Dirksen's & Tas!! Tas, it's an amazing home! INCREDIBLE!! Love it!
What I see is a beautiful expression of your mind and creative ability and impulses. Very artistic and very mechanical and a very representational structure at the same time. Wonderful to see a portion of what you can do with God's gifts and very little to obstruct your progress. Thank you for sharing.
This is spectacular. Would love to spend the weekend checking it out. Wow.
me too!
It is beautiful and respectful of the history of the building.
so beautiful! and creatively done to tread lightly on the original stonework
This guy is definitely not afraid of heights!😆
I love how the dog is making us all know that it's his/her house as well.
Yes, the cutest cameo was the dog following him up the spiral staircase.
That was also one of my first thoughts. Absolutely beautiful and so much love and respect shows in the way the renovation was done. The States could use a little bit of advice from just this video alone.
Are you kidding me? This is like a dream, absolutely amazing!
Absofckinlutely beautiful! I AM IN AWE!
Beautiful! I'm just fascinated by this home. Lovely !
Wow! I have seen a lot of very nice homes but yours is warm, inviting and beautiful. A job well done.
One of the best projects ever on this channel....thank you so much
Thank you again for amazing show. You always can find something interesting..
This house is so well done.
Love it.
One of the beautiful homes ive seen. Respect for this guy and the architect.
I am in AWE of this incredible project! Amazing what can be done with creative vision and help from friends. I will watch this again after posting my comment to squeeze another dose of inspiration from your video. Love your channel, thank you for finding gems like this!
This is the coolest house Ive seen in this channel... not to mention the coolest home owner! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Don't mind me, I'm just going to "confess" in the wine cellar
haha i know thats hilarious i love he did that
No shit. Hilarious!
Lol!
why make jokes like that? Repent and Believe in Lord Jesus Christ!
Je peut vous rejoindre? May I join you?
This is by far one of my favorites.
All artists are a bit mad and this guy is a great artist
lol , Right you need to take a huge leap of faith when you take on this kind of a project. Not for the debil mind.
@@RUclipsUser.Joy2024 I hope he puts some safety cables along the brim of the roof.
We're not mad. You normies are behind the curve and need us to design and inform you about the world you occupy. You're welcome.
@@mematron No need for a superiority complex here. People should be proud to explore the madness of our psyche and often the people too afraid to be are the "mad" ones. I mean no ill-intent attached to the word, in-fact I would gladly receive it has a compliment.
@@damienscullytoo You're not a creative. We make what we do look easy while your kind spectates and suggests what you would do if you had the perspicacity to imagine beyond the boundaries that society sets. You don't speak for me so stay in your lane and follow the trend.
Amazing project! I would love to live in such a beautiful house
Amazing. Wonderful job!
I love people with the vision to do these projects amazing absolute amazing
His respect for the old building is impressive! Love all the woodwork and wooden ceilings and the ambience and atmosphere of the place! Totally unique! Oh yes, also love his accent :-)
One of the coolest homes I’ve ever seen.
This is crazyyyyyyyyyyy ! But I love it !
Such incredible imagination
Gran obra Tas, felicitaciones! y qué belleza tu compañera Tola! Felicito este canal por compartir este tipo de proyectos únicos y respetuosos desde todo punto de vista!
This is one of my favorite that she has done.
Wow this is absolutely so gorgeous! At first that balcony made my legs wiggle I'm afraid of heights what a genius idea putting those cables. As to not obstruct The View anywhere but makes it safe. Again I think it is just absolutely stunning this is got to be one of my faves!!!
main structure was still good because in the 16th-century people knew how to build things to last. very nice place.
Or maybe because of the 1 meter thick walls made of stone and mortar with only tiny windows hahaha
There are actually many thousands of original 1500's timber and thatch buildings still in use. Take care of these ancient buildings constructed of natural materials and they will last almost forever.
@@Muonium1 obviously the ones that were built to last LASTED. that was the point. and in Europe , it's even more imperative we preserve these sites given the current climate it is facing.
@@danielapemcova345 thankfully someone understood what I meant, cheers :)
They didn't know structural analysis so they made all the structure like 10 or even 100 times thicker. That's one of the reasons we can see now all this type of buildings.
I love him, he would make a great friend. So much history in his family.
Spectacular! One of the most beautiful church restorations I have seen. I especially love how he kept the layers of history on the walls without messing with them. Though I do wonder if he had to use any kind of sealant on them.
This is breathtaking. What an achievement, to take such a historic building and breathe new life into it!
I love that he used a tie down strap as walkway. Those thing can handle 6800kg of weight as i used them to secure cargo and freight. It more than sufficient to hold his weight if you aint afraid of height. It fun and cool way to get some fun out of it.
This guy is crazy cool with skate ramp and so brave. We need more ppl like that who can see possiblity of something that look daunting. Life is nothing if you can't have a bit of fun with it
Wow, this project is very outstanding! I like the philosophy of the owner!
Beautiful work! It’s lovely to see these “generational” buildings live new lives.
Wow. Fascinating home, and, fascinating artist/builder!
This is beautiful and fabulous! You did a perfect restoration! I love all the stairs but I would make a bridge instead of the “high wire crossing!”
One of the best. Actually have seen 3 jaw dropping ones on this channel in the last few months- all in Spain. This one was amazing.
In basque Spain it’s like going back 2 hundred years . He did a really sympathetic on the church .
Well, everywhere in Spain you can find things like this 🤣 Spain is full of beautiful buildings and monuments!
this is my dream project
