So many church restorations are disappointments, usually because they chop up the interior and destroy the essence of the space, or else because they add decorative elements that detract from the building's heritage. This one gets it right, magnificently, and I love it. In fact to my tastes, this is the finest of all The Restoration Man projects I've seen. Bravo!

What a delightful couple. It's too bad that the restorations always seem to be tied up. You would think that because someone wants to restore and bring life back in to the building they would rush the paper work on this. I think they should even have special grants so these people get some aid in restoring what otherwise would be left to fall and ruin. Boggle the sensible mind. Side note: apparently I have ancestors from Berneray! Cheers to you, great result. Oh and DIY Daily, thanks for the amazing uploads...nice work. 🤗

@@emmalouie1663 you have a point. However, there are others to consider as well. Saving historic buildings is one. People can buy properties for whatever use. Leave the derelict building to continue tumbling down, and build something new if you get building permission, will be vastly less costly than to restore and renovate. The cost difference comes from the building rules and regulations, the materials and techniques you will have to use, that come into play when you apply to renovate a historic building. So simply rejecting some sort of support because the owners must be fat cats wanting a holiday home, seems a bit facile. I am no fat cat. Yet I bought my home, a tumble down 16th Century village house in a preservation area. The cost of renovating was at least twice that of knocking down and building anew. Of course the latter was not allowed in the preservation zone. I could have walked away and let the old place become a ruin. I did not. But I sure would not have minded less red tape or a little financial support to partially cover the higher building costs.

This is one of my all time favorites. I rarely like church restorations that are for homes, etc. but this could did such a stunning job with the architecture that it beautifies the building, creates such a restful and creative space, while also being a home--which doesn't detract at all. That is a feat. Impressive. And I note that George didn't have any comments on how to improve the design or make it more true to the building--I think he loved it from the start.

Open to the elements for decades those thick walls are a testimony to design and craftsmanship. They literally purchased four walls but the integrity of the exterior is correct and true. I'm not usually a fan of contemporary but every now and then I'm pleasantly surprised. The interior was very bright( will need it with so many dark days) with thoughtful flow and space, very modern gallery like. Truly a great restoration and artists work space. A win for the owners and all of us who love to see these old buildings saved and repurposed 🤳

Big fan from the U.S. here: George - Wow...triple wow! What an absolutely beautiful and totally unique restoration! The location of this old abandoned church is breathtaking...I’d say almost “heavenly.” It is very remote, so living there might be a challenge for some, but not for this couple who have such a deep connection through the (husband’s) late father. This is one of my fave “Restoration Man” episodes, the other one being where the wife of the couple was so excited and such a champion for the restoration project and then sadly, her cancer returned and she never got to see the project completed. That was a “lump in the throat” episode, that’s for sure. Thanks for these restoration journey videos, as they really help give a bit of some positive and uplifting... and beautiful escapes from the reality and stresses that so many of us are dealing with right now.👍

Beautiful restoration but I would have ,in a million years, painted those big rafter timbers. I would have stained them lightly and oiled them. The contrast with the white walls would have tied in with the massive stone work of the exterior walls. Great episode.

Awesome restore! It makes me eternally sad that the restorers of this church - though connected at heart by a father - are so disconnected from the Father in heaven; for which any church was ever erected. Thank you for including an ever so minor element of this aspect in this show - but ultimately it gives homage to man - which is the disgrace of any church, hence why it became the abandoned shell it was in the beginning of this show. It's a testament to our times, we've moved God out and ourselves now make a home without Him. Truly a tragedy.

This restoration is really well done! Like many people, I have my preferences when looking at their interior design choices. Wish they hadn't used the cheap-looking grey-painted balustrade and columns and gone for a more classy black metalwork or something the like to match the windows. But other than that, what a breath of fresh air and great reward for so many years of persistence!

What a wild, rugged place to bring back to life. I’m on the coast here in New England in the US and we feel slammed by wind when it is blowing 25kts! Just a summer breeze to these folks. Another lesson is how corrosive salt air is to everything. Salt leaves a slimy grey film on the windows all year long, so wash them 2x year and forget them. Surely a privilege to live by the ocean, though, no matter what.
