    An X3M40i/X3M40d comparison would be good. I've owned both but didn't have the opportunity to do a back to back comparison. From memory though I would say that the X3 M40d is more relaxed and quieter than the M40i version. My preference is for the M40i solely because of the sound of the engine (and even though there's 100 miles less range)!

      100 miles isnt that bad given the weight disadvantage the diesel has and the platform they are both based on

    The 2020 X3 M40i makes it even harder to upgrade to the full M or M Comp editions, IMHO, with the new TU1 "Technical Update" engine revision of the B58. 382 HP in the US variant, 350 bar higher pressure fuel system for less pollution and a higher fuelling limit if you decide to get a tune, new chain drive system which reduces friction by 30% and hopefully makes the chains last longer, also a new lighter weight forged crank (reduced rotating intertia by 25%). 4.4 sec 0-60 vs 4.6 in the 2019. This is the same engine as the 2020 Toyota Supra now with the integrated "hedifold" and gets 440 WHP with just a flash tune...
    Now includes M Sport Steering Wheel, Live Cockpit Pro and iDrive 7, too.

    • @Great_America
      @Great_America 4 года назад +1

      Actually, there was no upgrade whatsoever. Simply put, BMW corrected the performance information that was incorrectly provided on the 2018 and 2019 models. Every single M40i owner of the 2018 and 2019 models knew full well the window sticker specs were wrong. Dyno tests proved it. At least now BMW is providing more correct information on the sticker for 2020 ;-)

      PC Gamer The infotainment and some parts in the interior have changed, includes the new gauges aswell seen on the X5 and X7. And yes they did add power to the US spec.

    Good video, I love my X3M, I normally drive it in sports mode because comfort doesn’t pick up as much. Like you said it’s meant to be driven hard. Most days I enjoy driving it. Rarely put it in sports plus. Currently have the factory fitted tyres and on certain roads I have to slow right down. My drive to the golf club on the Felixstowe waterfront is an absolute nightmare, can’t get above 25 mph, and I just laugh all the way down the road as I’m flung around in the cockpit! Putting weight in the car seriously reduces the performance. Way much more than expected. I’ll keep it for the term of the PCP. Previously owned a F10 M5 that I got shot of sharp as it tried to kill me constantly. Went from,one extreme to another and had the amazing ride 520d. Just not enough enjoyment in that car. Tried the M2 before I bought the X3M, can’t get the golf clubs in! What next? 8 550i convertible?

    Awesome comparison lads! I own X4 M40i here in Sydney Australia and I love this car. Was waiting for the X4 M to come out but I think I ended up making the right choice. Not a big fan of the drop down tow bar and surprised the car cannot tow more to be honest as it has the same towing stats as the lesser engine models.
    We are a bit obsessed here with going off road in the bush, wonder whether anyone had done a 2inch lift and fitted BF tyres to an X4 M40i before with a kangaroo bar? 🇦🇺😁🇦🇺. Keep up the great reviews. Scouser downunder...

    I just got the X3 M Competition and I'm over the moon with it, was concerned about Joe's comments about the stiffness of the ride, but I like the firmer ride to be fair, just handed my not so practical M4 Comp back to BMW and not sorry I made the switch to an SUV. • @JBthemanwithcars
    @JBthemanwithcars 5 лет назад +2

    Thanks for the review. I recently bought an X4M Competition with a mega spec for £450 a month less than your finance example. An £85,845 hot SUV for a similar PCP payment to a Volkswagen T-Roc R, and miles cheaper than an X3 M40. After watching your reviews I was worried about the ride quality, but in my opinion it's not quite as bad as made out and I don't require a cushion. The ride reminds me of my old 911 Turbo (991.2), both being harsh up to 50 MPH but improving as speed gathers, as does the body control. Whilst the engine is quiet, it does sound better than the 911 Turbo as well.
    I bought it as a performance daily, not as a sports car. It's quite refined as the speed gathers, perhaps too much so, as you feel very insulated from the pace you are travelling it on the motorway. 80 MPH is under 2,000 rpm in top gear, which makes for relaxing progress. Performance is swift, much more junior supercar than hot hatch. I'd say it's a match for my new Vantage, which replaced my 911 Turbo, although the noise isn't as sweet. My biggest gripe is the exterior mirrors, which are huge and cause a bad blind spot.
    The overall package is outstanding, especially with the outrageous PCP deals on at the moment, although I'd recommend finding one with comfort, parking assistant plus and driving assistant plus packs, which helps fill the gaps in the standard specs for a car of this price range.

      Good to hear! Yeah BMW UK sold about 3 in the first 6 weeks of sale, then they discounted the arse out of them and literally sold thousands of them... Only issue is now most of them seem to be getting written off by people who haven't ever driven anything close to 500bhp and 2 tons. Incredible value though so totally get it 👌

    I have owned my M40i since March and was lucky to have an X3MComp for the day on Saturday and agree wholeheartedly with you both. The X3MComp was great and as a second fun car (as if) it would be great but to be honest only comes into its own over the M40i at higher speeds or conering a bit faster than should be done of busy UK roads. A great car BUT. Totally agree with comment regarding adaptive dampers on M40i, so glad I chose the option.

    I'm convinced BMW uses the softest plastic possible. All those scratches and swirls add up to an interior that although perfectly clean, just doesn't look new for very long. So, you feel like you need a new one, and poof... BMW has more of your money. I swiped my brand new M850i console, with my finger just to feel it, and that left scratches that are there to this day! My finger scratched the plastic. And I work on a computer all day, very soft hands!

      So an update. I recently tried the X3 M40i and the X3M. I bought the X3M. For me the ride was perfectly fine, remember, this is an M car. The x340i was just too similar (obviously) to my outgoing 340i touring, just a little higher and newer tech. The X3M felt like a different car, and like a said earlier the ride is fine, in fact I’d say it’s more comfortable than my outgoing 340i touring (with variable dampers). Also, the deals on the X3m right now are ridiculous. I got 22.5k off list, 2.9% APR on PCP

    Great observation in the comment at ~6:45 on the HUD. That is exactly why I have 2 pairs of non-polarized sunglasses that live in my car. Tony wouldn't have any problem with the HUD if he used non-polarized lenses that are still of sufficient quality to protect his eyes. I test drove an Outback Wilderness recently, and couldn't even see the infotainment screen due to how terribly bad the screen is (polarized lenses make bad screen tech reveal itself, unfortunately also an issue for every HUD implementation I've seen).

    The X3M has fit the brief it was set right? To give it some space and differentiation to the M40i it would have to be sharper, harder edged and faster. If it wasn't what would be the point of it?
    But as you've found for the road that's not necessarily better. It's the philosophy of my favourite flavour of BMW - Alpina.
    I'd imagine the X3M will be a relatively rare sight on the road, until perhaps some crazy deals get offered on them. Until then the M40i looks the smart option. Sounds better to my ear too.

      Jeremy Funnell X5 will be softer and more luxurious, but the X3 is way more fun 😁

    • @washout04
      @washout04 5 лет назад +1

      Petrolhead Tours exactly my thoughts. Practicality vs fun. We have a 3 series touring at the moment. Do you think the X3 is a step up in practically over the 3 wagon? The interior space appears to be quite similar.

    • @PetrolheadTours
      @PetrolheadTours 5 лет назад +1

      Jeremy Funnell I came from an F31 340i and the front seat space and rear seat space is definitely a huge improvement in spaciousness and quality. The boot size is similar, but the shape of the X3 boot is squarer and hence more useable. I’d say the X3 is on a par with a G31 wagon in terms of useable space in front, in back, and in the boot.
      And the X3 M40i is way more fun than the F31 340i.

      @@PetrolheadTours I agree- I had an X5 40d and a 340i estate and my X3M40i beats both of them easily in comfort and thrills. Super happy with mine; still weird though that the full X3M is not as good or actually better as £20K+ more money

    Nice video I do like the X3 m styling and Colour combination but everyday usability the x3 m40i is the way to go I guess

  • @fang75429
    @fang75429 5 лет назад +2

    The gear ratios are the same between the two cars but the X3 M40i has a 3.385 final drive ratio and the X3M has a 3.150 ratio, but combined with the slightly different tyre sizes this means that at the same speed in the same gear the X3 M40i will be at 5% higher rpm which may help very slightly with the lag issue against the X3M

    • @PetrolheadTours
      @PetrolheadTours 5 лет назад

      Brad Collins good info 👍
      But the difference in roll on was way more than 5% would suggest...

    • @fang75429
      @fang75429 5 лет назад +3

      @@PetrolheadTours ohh yes absolutely, the difference is much much larger than that. Thank you so much for that comparison by the way in the video, you and Joe are the first people to have done this test. It reminds me of driving an A45 which is very laggy but goes crazy past 3000rpm. I found that quite annoying to drive compared to my S63tu M6 on the motorway as it needed to be dropped a few gears to get anywhere. I've driven an X3 M40i and that felt similar to the S63tu in where it comes on boost, just obviously not as quick.

    Just found this video while doing some research on the X3M. Tbh guys this video doesn't really make much sence. It seems that you had both already decided that the M was inferior and took the opportunity to criticise it at every opportunity. We now know the S58 is epic and much loved while also being ultra tunable. What was the point of doing acceleration tests when you knew the S58 made power higher up the RPM range. Rather than pointless comparissons from low rpm why didn't you really demonstarte what a ballistic suv the X3M actually is? It might ride harder (remidied on the face lift model) but it also goes and corners a lot harder too. Thanks anyway.

    Brilliant video and so pleased I now got my X3 M40i in March. It is such a practical car which sounds great and puts a smile on my face every time I get in it. Have done some coding as well. No ASD, starts in adaptive, and rolls Royce ringtones. 😀

    I absolutely love my 2021 X3 M40i. The problem finding the tires with the 21” inch option. 245/40/21 Fronts, 275/35/21 Rears as proper pairs. Don’t know why there aren’t many options. Mostly only the Bridgestone Alenza RFT’s. Wish the seat went back a little more and was a little wider too, but that’s not as a big issue as finding tires.

    • @w17force1

      That's why I went with the 19" tires on my M40i. Also, when I test-drove with both size tires, I noticed a comfort difference right away.

    Brilliant video, Joe, very informative - bought my wife the M40i in 2018, very similar spec to Pete and the pre-OPF sound is great! Very interested in the comments about coding out the ASD and replacing the dials with the Alpina ones - would Pete mind sharing how he achieved this, was it using something like Bimmercode? Have never used anything like that before, but sounds amazing! I wonder what features it can unlock on my M5!! Keep up the good work!

    Hello Joe. The obvious question is - if you're still allowed to - test (borrow) the Alpine X3D - better than both and a lot cheaper than the X3M.

    • @JoeAchilles1

      Hopefully try the new XD3 soon, far as I know it's a similar price to the X3M spec for spec? Also finance deals on ALPINA's here in the UK are quite poor, therefore mean you pay a fair amount more, this might have changed now though

    So now I know why my 2019 X3 M40i doesn’t crackle and pop. I’m a little disappointed that my local BMW Genius didn’t know the reason. Is there a video on how to get the Alpina dials? They were cool. Also, is there a way to know if my car is fitted with the e-dif? I’m in Portugal.

    • @PetrolheadTours
      @PetrolheadTours 5 лет назад +1

      Calvin Chann you need to code the dials - the easiest way to do this is with an app on your phone, I use BimmerCode or Carly.
      As for the diff, if you put your VIN number into a vin decoder like mdecoder or similar it should come up if you have the diff. The code for the diff option is S2T4A 👍

    • @PetrolheadTours
      @PetrolheadTours 5 лет назад

      JED SANDS not legally... ideally you’d take out the OPF and code out the subsequent check engine light, but that would mess with warranty and with MOT (three years later). Hopefully Remus will come out with something though...
