Out of the BMW X3M or the Porsche Macan GTS my money goes to the Porsche. They're not really designed to Go off road but both of them surprised me with their capabilities. The Porsche will hold it's value better than the BMW.
Macan actually has almost 10” of clearance in offroad mode when the air suspension is at max ride height. I own one and take off road often. It’s as capable as any crossover and far more comfortable than just about anything offroad. Jump back onto the road and set to Sport Plus and it rips canyons about as good as any sports car. It’s really shocking how great it is at everything. A fellow engineer and Macan owner recently commented to me that it’s the best car ever made. Hard to disagree. The differences in suspension between the BMW and Macan are fully articulated in the video (pun intended). BMW rides very stiff. Too stiff, to the point of fault. It has very stiff antiroll bars. Macan has superior suspension kinematics with multilink front and rear compared to the BMWs strut front. Macan has air suspension (must have option IMO). Compared to the BMW, the Macan has an optimal balance of compliance, traction, and composure on rear world roads, including offroad.

My '09 Cayenne GTS is remarkably capable off-road - I've taken it on some logging roads in the Montana mountains in winter, and up some washed out roads in the Colorado mountains (in addition to track day and being my daily driver). The air-suspension can increase the already decent clearance; and the locking differential, low gear, and traction control all make it work well in snow and gravel conditions - all using normal street tires. I still would not go bouldering with it, but I've been impressed with how well it handles whatever I throw at it. Just be sure to get the air suspension - it adds a whole new dimension to the vehicle.
The Cayenne did the Transsyberia Challenge with Stock Suspension and Dampers. Absolutely insane. You should have alook at that, the Cayenne is a beast at Offroading!
First gen Cayenne is the best offroader Porsche ever did... GTS the worst of those because of lower stock ride height, but its not the end of the world. Same base platform VW Touareg got even more clearance though. If you get the Active anti roll bar option for the Porsche, it decouples the roll bars in terrain mode for more wheel travel as well.
@@GoldenCroc No active roll bar disconnect on mine - and the V8 is a great engine, without the worries of expensive turbochargers. Sounds great in sport mode, as well . X3M cheap plastic in dashboard and a super stiff suspension (I have a GT3 with buckets so like stiff suspensions, but in this Suv is ridiculous). I wouldn't brag that you spent 70k on a suv that wont get through mud, and my 20 yr old cheap AF jeep will tow you out.
@@nelsondln Im not some German fanboy, I do however like the cars for their intended purpose. Don’t take my previous comment too seriously, I have nothing against the xj and im well aware of their capabilities, there’s a reason why they are popular for off roading. You know nothing about me in the real world, you only have a RUclips comment to go off of.
Anyways, my main point to your original comment is that the two cars they used are not meant for off roading, they are considered sporty compact SUV’s. The cayenne I mentioned is larger and has the low range, this Macan doesn’t have it, although it’s awd system is very good. I wouldn’t take either of these out for serious off roading.
The G63 is also good off roading, but that’s the sporty model and the stock wheel/tire setup isn’t mean for off roading. They have a version suited for that. Do you think a trackhawk will do better off road than grand Cherokee 4xe trackhawk? Certainly not, it’s not meant for that. Do you see where I’m coming from? That’s my main point if you look over the nonsense of me messing with you
Mat we need more drag races with Nick! He's awesome!
You commented 3 times in 1 video. Cringe
@@KungFuWizardOfJesus it's a bot.
Same bullshit generic comments... always seems to amazed by every video.. everything is "Insane"... stupid bot...
In the first one, I didn't think it was a bad performance by the Porsche, the driver in it, who is very slow, accelerated 10 years after Matt!!!
I'll definitely get the PorschA, looks way more elegant to me and it would seems like it's just a tiny bit better than the beemer.
Is that the Pig Latin pronunciation? Iway illway efinitelyay etgay ethay PorschA (roughly).
Probably the only time these cars will ever go offroad
I love Carwow reviews, drag races and off-road challenges! Keep making more insane videos!
⬆️⬆️
Congratulations lucky winners 🎉🎁
Scamming a c/programme😢🤔
What if the offroad battle is between Cayenne GT vs Focus WRC 07?
Yet again insane... what about awesome🤔
The Porsche definitely won the 4th challenge, 3 wheels on the ground is far more stable than 2.
Brilliant video Matt, as always! Really interesting, we are thinking of buying one of these cars - but not for off roading 😂. Put off a bit right enough with harsh ride of X3M 😢
I’ve had an X3M Comp for 3 years, it’s amazing and so crazy fast. I don’t notice the ride issues at all and would highly recommend it.
@@irishphil9480
That’s good to know, just reviews we have read and videos watched, it appears to be ‘too uncomfortable’ for British roads? In fairness though we’ve never test drove one 😬, we’ve currently got a M5, which was supposed to be the same ‘harsh’ ride but we love it?? Moral of the story I suppose is to just bite the bullet and go and take one for an extended test drive 🤷♀️
@@karene4990 where are you based? I have had several M3’s, had an F10 M5, an X5M and now the X3M. The X3M is considerably faster than all of those. The engine is amazing. In fact so good I have a brand new M4 Convertible being delivered in weeks.
Please feel free to ask me anything about the X3M.
My wife is 34 and has a degenerative back disease and has never had an issue in it.
@@irishphil9480 X3M Competizione still cant match Nissan Pickup tho.
@@purwantiallan5089 I can’t disagree
Its PORSCHEEE…not PORSCH
When i saw this video i literally screamed 😂 this video was epic!!!
Both SUVs can go on light off-road duty, just like most other SUVs
I doubt if anyone would use these SUVs on Rubicon Trail
So much information, yet it is still so entertaining! Keep up these great videos!
Hope Carwow uploaded Offroad battles with this X3M Comp vs Ford USAF Reserve Rally Car.
I think the porche killed it by far lol definitely take the porche over the bmw
It would have been interesting to see how well the Acura MDX Type S does in comparison with these as well.
Acura vehicles aren’t sold in the UK.
need more SUVs offroading, not much of them are intended to take off the asphalt as much which it was suppose to be
"Congrats to everyone who is early and found this comment"🎯
a +1, 0, -1 scoring system would make more sense
Nick is like watching a little girl going to school for the first time in her new dress…….giggling, hopping around…..more giggling.
It’s just sooooo cute !! ?
During the “drag races” ( how appropriate ) I’m really surprised he doesn’t have to stop and have someone “change” him….
Settle down or get an adult replacement, Nick.
Yes Darren - Porsche not Porsha. And there was a big difference in cost price, yet the BMW looks like £40k worth, not 90. And the Porsche won - I wasn't expecting that.
I always see the halo energy sword in the x3 brake lights
No only is the Porsche better on road than the X3M but also off road, who would have thought.
We live in a time where off roading is just an aftertought in SUVs
1 more point for the Porsche, looks much better :)
Porsche ofc ❤️
We want Same competition with G wagon 💪
Porsch is like saying Lambo or Bimmer. The actual word Porsche has 2 syllables bc German doesn’t have silent letters.
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻, Of course the X3MC will win!
The cars are on summer tires not off road tires. That would make a massive difference. It’s like doing a winter test in these cars but they have summer tires.
I think the Porsche should get 1 point deducted for having PDK in an SUV. No one will off-road with a dual clutch.
German cars are odd lol I drove a 16 golf r and its amazing on the street but the second I touch grass it doesn't want to move
The BMW won the down hill challenge in my opinion. I want to do down hill as safely and as quickly as possible. Why go down at "0" mph when I can go down at 2 mph? WIn for BMW!
Want to see anyone who choose a sh!tbox bmw over any Porsche....
I never knew Uncle Fester was still alive and well working in the off-road community in the UK just brilliant!
Quattro came in clutch for the Porsche
So, the Porsche is actually good off road! If I get one of those as a courtesy car then, I know what I'll be doing...driving it on the road like literally everyone else.
Look forward to seeing you in Waitrose car park taking up two parking spaces with your pint of milk and loaf of bread in the boot 👍🏾
😂😂
I think the bmW Diver was the only issue with the BMW!! 🤷🏽♂️
I just ordered the BMW, on purpose!!!
Matt please drag race the X3 M in a proper road drag race
It's a real shame that the Porsche doesn't have an extra 100hp and 150nm. Looks the best and by far sounds the best. Good off road ability but lacks the punch the BMW offers
I like the design of the X3 but the exhaust sound of the Porsche is way better
That last test was pretty surprising. The BMW with all its ground clearance just didn't do quite well enough. Maybe Matt was not concentrating well enough. Kudos to the Porsche.
Porsche not Porsch as most of poeple in UK say...this is German name and should be pronounced this way.
Mmmm? Don’t really see the point. They’re just jacked up hatchbacks.
I have a 2020 Macan, and not normally a BMW guy, however got to say that X3M looks nicer side by side! Unpopular opinion I'm actually like the new BMW design language :0
God I think the exact opposite! Crazy how preference differs.
