Depends what your intention is. I’ve only had comps due to the top flight proper M seats, merino leather, 21 Mich PS4s, power, exhaust. I’d say off the lot not even a question. But if it’s a project and you are going to gut it or substantially change it, then the values are up to you. But the cost on the comp tires/rims alone and seats which you will want, is enough by themselves. Exhaust is def better, the LCI is the first one I haven’t modded at all. The 265/295 setup (some people have put that size rubber on the stock rim- I’ve seen it in person and it doesn’t look right. Just got my 2018 X435D Mostorsport remapped now it has a wopping 425 hp with 840nm of torque WTF this thing went from amazing to epic in a day. Love this car as much as my older Z4M coupe. The x4 is even quicker than that, by a long shot and almost as fun do drive, it is brutally quick, due to the insaine torque I think it would be very close to the new X4M competition. Around 3.8-4 sec to 60 mph.
had mine 6 months and love it , i was worried about the hard suspension but after coming from a M2 its fine . Mss now offer an urban setup if you do need it softer .
BMW's X3M Competition is As Quick as A Trackhawk and Way More Efficient Yeah except for X3's are for mid level real estate agents and Tackhawks are for men who fuck mid level real estate agents
You guys have to get in a Stelvio Quadrifoglio. It much better dynamically than both the Macan Turbo and the X3M and faster. It’s kinda like how the Levante trofeo is to the Cayenne Turbo and X5M: a much lighter car in the same class. But whereas the Levante is less powerful and not as fast, the stelvio is a better performer than its competitors. The Stelvio also shares no Chrysler parts and is all Italian unlike the Maserati.
@@dragospahontu If the car is bought and not leased a suspension swap will sort out the comfort issue. MSS do a decent setup iirc. The ride quality is literally the only let down with the x3m which is a shame. They're stupid fun to drive though regardless.
I don't get how people are breaking their cars so much, must be a maintenance issue ie they treat their cars like shit then expect it to stay in one piece.
Stiff suspension is also what makes the M5 Competition a little unbearable as well. However most people who swap to a different setup from Dinan or similar say it makes a huge difference
I really don't understand when people say too much adjustability..... It's good to have those options so you can set it up exactly how you like it and then use the 2 M buttons. That's easy... Ask the Giulia QV guys how annoying it is to not have the adjustability. Best mode in that car is the race mode but then it turns all the nannies off??? couldn't change the exhaust valves independently.... It sucked not having the adjustability. I really think you guys overrate the whole "too much adjustability" thing. To most people its a very good thing to have.
I would expect any BMW with a sports suspension to be so tight that if you rolled over a dime you could tell if it was heads or tails. If I was in any competition M car I would not expect much in the way of comfort. I do agree that it’s not a great choice for any urban environment. But more because all the potholes would lead to flat tires and damaged wheels.
That lag you felt pulling out of corners isn’t turbo lag. It’s throttle lag. BMW’s have been infested with this issue for a decade now. I owned an F10 535 with lag so bad I nearly got hit several times making a left in traffic where the car started to roll and moved about 20’ before the engine decided to wake up. Meanwhile, your giving it more and more throttle and finally the engine gets the call and your shot through the turn with WAY too much speed. It’s downright unsafe. That and the too harsh ride made me pass on an F80 M3, and now I’m passing on this replacing my Cayenne. I had such high hopes for the X3M. It’s just SO stiff.
Actually the opening comments about it having "castle technology" is surprisingly on-point: I've read a psychological study that discussed how the feeling of being fortified and safe in a changing world is a major driver behind the increased popularity of Trucks/SUVs/CUVs (remember SAVs??) over cars. PS: And of course, this is the Competition version of the Castle >< I don't hate it, though it's a shame it's so stiff. This thing has premium fast Q-ship daily driver written all over it otherwise.
So my friend works at a large BMW dealer and he says the X3 M40i is selling like hotcakes, the X3 M Competition is selling like hotcakes, and NOBODY is buying the regular X3 M; they are just sitting on the lots. Sadly my friend agrees that both X3 Ms, comp or not, are far too stiff and the suspension of choice is under the M40i, but advice to anyone who wants one of these and is looking for a deal: look for non-Comps!
The question for me is, X3 M40i VS X3 M, as the second or third owner. Is the X3 M worth the extra money? The M40i is a whole lot of not a car but really a car as far as machines go, as long as you don't worry about playing the numbers game. Right now used a good X3 M is going for like high 60s low 70s, a good M40i is seeing high 30s low to mid 40s.
Whether it’s worth the extra money or not is up to you. X3 M40i is pretty damn quick and with some simple mods you can be making 500hp for under $2000. That being said you could do the same thing on the x3m and be getting 650-700hp.
All depends on how fast you want to go. I had an m40i and the b58 is a phenomenal engine. It'll be much more comfy on the suspension, way more fuel efficient, and far cheaper. I wanted more power so went to the comp.
Fantastic film guys, the best I've seen, loved your style, what a beautiful piece of road to test it out. Fantastic guys, I've ordered one, it's coming in June, bmw Grey with orange interior few extras, really looking forward to getting it, but even more after watching your film. thanks, guys. amazing bit of safe fast driving
11.6 @ 120 stock every time with a mild tune 10.9 @ 124 so yes it as fast or faster with way less drama if that is what you prefer. I do that is why I bought it!
I dig it. Always thought X3/X5 were pretty cool for what they are. I don’t mind it so much because it’s still pretty much an suv. What I detest are the crossovers that pretend they’re cars like the X6 and just look like some lifted, bloated abomination.
Not that simple. Must have driven for at least 6 miles and for 10 minutes before launch control will even work. You also have to full down on the brake THEN full down on the throttle to get it going.
We have the x3m40i with 19 inch wheels. Still a bit too stiff in comfort mode so I can’t imagine what a stiffer suspension and 21 inch wheels does! If mclaren can make a hypercar ride like a rolls then bmw should be able to make a crossover ride like a crossover!
@@dodo19923 - They are being a bit too finicky and exaggerated. I have the X3 M40i, it's slightly stiff in Sports Mode, but seems to adjust with your driving style over time. The vehicle seems to learn from your driving style and makes adjustments, it's just some drivers don't really pay attention to their vehicle. I drive alot so I know when something is different.
The B58 engine in the M40i is the best, most reliable engine ever made, but the S58 definitely places it in a category of its own. Awesome German engineering.
@@jsupreme369 Not sure the B58 is the best, and I own a tuned M140i myself. It's a good engine but aluminium pistons mean 600+ is a bit of a gamble without a full rebuild with forged pistons.
paul kitchen ruclips.net/video/NP48zEMNTfY/видео.html here’s a link where the x3m gets beat by the stelvio and guess what the trackhawk beats the stelvio so the trackhawk is faster then the x3m because the stelvio beat the x3m
Stan Oster It’s not that Stiff. At all. Really it feels more comfortable than my Stock M2 Competition. Which people don’t really complain about. I think because it’s an “SUV”....people have an expected comfort in this car. It’s not. It’s a Precision Tuned, Tight Sports suspension. Which is exactly the point of this car. Feels like an M3/M4 Conpetition in Sport/Sport Plus mode except 12 inches higher. IMO...it’s perfect. I wouldn’t want it any softer. If it was softer....you’d trade the cornering and handling and flatness around turns for some swaying and roll.. ie. Mom SUV ;)
I appreciate that you try and find some negatives to share, so that it sounds like a review and not a love-fest, but is an uncomfortable ride something to truly list as a fault in car badged as a "competition" model? You think they should dial back the lateral G in favor of ride quality on the competition model? Shouldn't the competition model be max attack? Let the X3 M be comfy. If you choose the competition, well, what do you expect?
Yes, because it's also an SUV/crossover and other performance suv's have better rides (AMG, Porsche come to mind). Definitely something to know if you're shopping for a fast grocery getter/kid transporter.
@@675Films I get that, mostly, but this is faster than the AMG and Porsche in this segment - which is the goal of the "competition" line of M cars. So it does what it needs to do to be better in all performance metrics. In other words, BMW did this on PURPOSE. It's not accidentally harsh, it's purposefully harsh. And harsh here is rather relative, since he said it's not "as" comfortable as some others, but didn't consider it "uncomfortable." If the reviewer, and by proxy the customer, are more concerned with a comfy ride, than don't get the competition model. It's like when James May started complaining about harsh rides, but he still kept driving and buying the performance models. It just rings hollow.
In the UK this car is vastly overpriced, so much so that only a handful were sold in the first 6 months after launch. Fast forward to late November and BMW put a PCP deal together that made them cheaper than an X3 sport 2.0 diesel, or half the monthly payment of a Macan S. I picked up a huge spec X4M Competition and love it. I agree that the suspension is a bit firm but I was aware of that after a test drive. It’s an absolute weapon on a fast road and so much fun. You stop noticing the suspension after a few weeks, until you drive something a bit more supple, which is just about any other car. Keep up the good work guys.
I much prefer the X3 M40i over an X3M Comp for the reasons stated in this video. The X3M is super aggressive. M40i gives you all the right sounds, is incredibly quick, but when you put it in comfort it feels like a standard X3.
You are correct and my M40i had an intake and a Dinan and was almost as fast brakes almost as good and gets 10mpg better all day! But almost is not good enough for some. I was concerned I made the right decision during break in 1200 miles but now I know the M is a monster. I love the red m sport seats way more comfortable and carbon fiber accents in the cockpit.
@@paulkitchen5802 I had an m40i and now a comp. The m40i isn't almost as fast and definitely doesn't get 10mpg more. I'm averaging 17 in my x3m and I was getting 21 in the m40i.
I think the x3m and x4m are strangely the most compelling car bmw makes. It's essentially a lifted M3 wagon. Since the modern m3 is no longer the pure lightweight drivers car why not have awd and some extra luggage space. Compared to the competetion it's faster, more powerful and alot cheaper than the Macan turbo if Abit less refined. It's cheaper than the glc63 as well and dynamically more interesting although it sounds Abit worse. I think it's a pretty good package.
Couldn't agree more. Ride is way too harsh. Other than that, FUCKING AMAZING. BUT. I would never buy this because of the harshness. Comfort needs to ride like a Lexus. THEN you can firm everything up like a steel beam welded to the side of a boulder.

The x4 is even quicker than that, by a long shot and almost as fun do drive, it is brutally quick, due to the insaine torque I think it would be very close to the new X4M competition. Around 3.8-4 sec to 60 mph.

Hopefully you guys can keep doing these co-piloted videos! I like the cross banter between the two of you.
Why does a 505 hp engine need fake exhaust sound pumped into the cabin?
sanju2 plenty of garbage V-8s as well.
Way better with the 2 of you together! Keep up the great work!
had mine 6 months and love it , i was worried about the hard suspension but after coming from a M2 its fine . Mss now offer an urban setup if you do need it softer .
Chris Sarjeant what are the differences suspension wise between X3M and Comp version?
BMW's X3M Competition is As Quick as A Trackhawk and Way More Efficient
Yeah except for X3's are for mid level real estate agents and Tackhawks are for men who fuck mid level real estate agents
I can’t wait to upgrade from my F15 X5 am sport to this!
What a cute little dog at intro of the video!😍
Thing was nasty looking
You guys have to get in a Stelvio Quadrifoglio. It much better dynamically than both the Macan Turbo and the X3M and faster. It’s kinda like how the Levante trofeo is to the Cayenne Turbo and X5M: a much lighter car in the same class. But whereas the Levante is less powerful and not as fast, the stelvio is a better performer than its competitors. The Stelvio also shares no Chrysler parts and is all Italian unlike the Maserati.
Love the shot with the Guntherwerks flying in one lane as the X3M is flying in the other
The none competition x3m has softer suspension!!!!!!
Nate it’s still like sitting in a wheel barrow with a tyre filled with concrete, it is softer though
@@kyleb5518 but if you live in Spain it's a no brainer
@@dragospahontu If the car is bought and not leased a suspension swap will sort out the comfort issue. MSS do a decent setup iirc. The ride quality is literally the only let down with the x3m which is a shame. They're stupid fun to drive though regardless.
@@dodo19923 leasing is the worst way to buy new cars
@@dodo19923 anyway I'm going to wait a bit an get a GLC63
I'm sure this will be awesome to drive/own right up until it breaks way before it should.
I don't get how people are breaking their cars so much, must be a maintenance issue ie they treat their cars like shit then expect it to stay in one piece.
My favorite crossover is the F Pace
I love the 964 sitting in the back
Try the X3 M, ride quality even with 21’s wheels, is much better than on the comp version. Great content, thank you.
Stop. There's no difference in suspension for comp vs non-comp.
No, it's turbo lag. I daily drive it every day. It's turbo lag. In Sport Plus, there is ZERO throttle lag. Regards.
Keep up the Two Takes!
Cant wait to get next slap BM3 tune stage 1 🚀
Fantastic film guys, the best I've seen, loved your style, what a beautiful piece of road to test it out. Fantastic guys, I've ordered one, it's coming in June, bmw Grey with orange interior few extras, really looking forward to getting it, but even more after watching your film. thanks, guys. amazing bit of safe fast driving
I dont think it will run 11.4 as many Tack hawks have
11.6 @ 120 stock every time with a mild tune 10.9 @ 124 so yes it as fast or faster with way less drama if that is what you prefer. I do that is why I bought it!
Well, you're wrong, but good try!
This X5M should have a launch button. After the launch is complete, turn launch button off and previos preset setup is resumed.
*X3M
I dig it. Always thought X3/X5 were pretty cool for what they are. I don’t mind it so much because it’s still pretty much an suv. What I detest are the crossovers that pretend they’re cars like the X6 and just look like some lifted, bloated abomination.
This new format is great
Launch is simple: Sport+, DSC OFF, Manual + Gas for 3 /5 seconds + Brake The Launch Control will appear on dash.... Thats it
Not that simple. Must have driven for at least 6 miles and for 10 minutes before launch control will even work. You also have to full down on the brake THEN full down on the throttle to get it going.
Was that the Guntherworks 911 at 10:27 mins?
yes we filmed at same time.
How would you say the performance and drive compare to a Stelvio Quadrifoglio?
Kinda sad they didn't touch on that as well:-/
We have the x3m40i with 19 inch wheels. Still a bit too stiff in comfort mode so I can’t imagine what a stiffer suspension and 21 inch wheels does! If mclaren can make a hypercar ride like a rolls then bmw should be able to make a crossover ride like a crossover!
Is it really that bone crunching or are people being a bit too finicky with the ride quality?
@@dodo19923 - They are being a bit too finicky and exaggerated. I have the X3 M40i, it's slightly stiff in Sports Mode, but seems to adjust with your driving style over time. The vehicle seems to learn from your driving style and makes adjustments, it's just some drivers don't really pay attention to their vehicle. I drive alot so I know when something is different.
Holy fuck thats fast. Best driving crossover, just least comfortable crossover. Makes sense.
Are we going to sit here and act like we ain’t notice that 720s @3:40
I need this S58 engine in my M140i !!!

Either way, the B58 is a very good engine sir !
This engine and Drivetrain into the next gen G8x is going to be Bonkers!
I saw a stock x3m competition at the track and I saw a trackhawk stock and the trackhawk beat it.
nobody cares about the trackhawk cause it's ugly AF
Must be driver because the X3M is the same or faster!
paul kitchen no it’s not faster trackhawk is faster
Nananana stfu buddy the trackhawks the best looking

Very informative such a comforting and versatile vehicle 💯
Mat couldn't even talk at the end because he was puckering when the other guy was driving, lol.
This and the X5 Comp is stupid fast! I want one for my Dad SUV. Currently have a MDX Hybrid
so it basically has a modern 2jz niceee
I think the X3M would be better without the competition package! Good video 👍🏻
Stan Oster X3M needs the Competition Package...just the M-Seats and Sports Exhaust are worth it alone in the Comp pack..... ;-)
What do you do with that ultra stiff suspension?
Stan Oster It’s not that Stiff. At all. Really it feels more comfortable than my Stock M2 Competition. Which people don’t really complain about. I think because it’s an “SUV”....people have an expected comfort in this car. It’s not. It’s a Precision Tuned, Tight Sports suspension. Which is exactly the point of this car. Feels like an M3/M4 Conpetition in Sport/Sport Plus mode except 12 inches higher. IMO...it’s perfect. I wouldn’t want it any softer. If it was softer....you’d trade the cornering and handling and flatness around turns for some swaying and roll.. ie. Mom SUV ;)
Double Take is whats up boys. I'll take some solo vids from the both of you as well!
Uses a Carbon 911 as a camera car....love these guys
Does the x3m competition really do 0-60 in 3.3? I’ve seen it break 4, but everywhere I look I see different claims. 3.3 seems very quick
Regarding your comment on the harshness in comfort, the non comp is not as punishing. Makes for a better all around daily.
Wrong. No difference in suspension for non comp vs comp. Just a tune for 30 extra horse and an exhaust system.
X3 M with 20" wheels and base seats aren't bad on road trips. But, the 21" with Sport seats is a little stiff for my liking.
Makes me wonder how perfect it would be with a 19 or 20 inch wheel would be. Get a little sidewall.
Yeah why, why are they trying to hit .98g and having a spine crushing suspension? Not a single customer is taking one to a single track
Actually seen one on streets of willow
Kevin Linatoc damn for real?? A customer and their car, not on an experience day or something like that?
@@klinatoc Actually saw one on the Streets of Willow.

CLS63AMG WAGON pretty sure it was a customer car no media and not a bmw event
Plan on tracking after break in and if you live in area with decent roads comfort setting is fine do not believe the reviews.
And harsh here is rather relative, since he said it's not "as" comfortable as some others, but didn't consider it "uncomfortable."
If the reviewer, and by proxy the customer, are more concerned with a comfy ride, than don't get the competition model.
Great review!! Love the podcast as well. You guys kick ass. Thanks for all the amazing content.
Love the two takes, should do some one bikes😏
