My jaw has been clicking since I was 13. I’m 27 now, so my jaw has been clicking for the majority of my life. I saw this video at the start of the year. I did this and felt significant relief within days so I kept at it. Now 4 months later, my jaw has completely stopped clicking even when I try my hardest to make it click!

(Older video, but just in case people still find it...)
Thank you for addressing this issue that so many of us face.
I struggled with this for many years when I was a teenager and young adult. I had some especially bad episodes when under physical stress (working out, dental work, etc.) to the point where I couldn't open my jaw more than half an inch or so.
I want to share the solution that worked for me in case it helps anyone else.
Disclaimer: This is just me. I'm not saying it will work for anyone else. If you have any doubt, don't do it. If you can't do it without pain, don't do it. etc. (Do only at your own risk.)
This is what I worked for me:
A few times a day when my jaw is working properly (i.e., just little pops, but not locked), I take my first and second finger together and set them gently on the soft tissue that's over the jaw joint. To find the right spot:
    - I set my fingers in the area.
    - Then open my jaw and feel for the hard bone under the soft tissue that feels like it's sort of pushing out a bit as I move my jaw.
    - Then I move my fingers (together still) very slightly forward and down until I find a softer spot just in front of the pushed out part.
Once I find that spot, I give it the slightest pressure--not much, just slightly more than a simple touch. Then gently open and close my jaw in a normal manner several times.
I typically only had the problem on my right side, so mostly concentrated on that side. But sometimes would also do my left side after the right side.
After a year or two of doing this, my jaw no longer popped.
I also use the same technique to unlock my jaw in the very rare occasions where it still gets locked up.
It almost never happens anymore. It might happen if I'm at the dentist for a long time, like for a root canal and such. If it does occur, I can easily unlock it using this technique (though I do have to warn my dentist that I might have to do so :-).
    Hope this helps someone.
    Fun side note:
Believe it or not, I learned this technique when I was watching some SF series on TV. The series was pretty bad and lasted only one season, but it's the most valuable thing I've ever gotten out of the thousands of hours of my life I've spent in front of the TV. :-)

My jaw would also move to the right ever so slightly as I heard the click. The first 20 times I attempted this exercise I would hear the click. Then about 1/4 of the attempts. I'm glad I found these videos. Around when I got braces I had a Herbst Appliance procedure to adjust my bite. After that my jaw started clicking obnoxiously when I yawned, ate, or moved my jaw side to side. When I asked a couple years later I was told if it wasn't "hurting me" there wasn't anything they could do/were willing to do to fix it. Its been a little over 10 years now and I feel my jaw clicks more than ever and even gets stiff on the left side every so often. Recently I had family and friends comment on the sound of my jaw clicking and ask if it was hurting me which is so embarrassing. I've hated that there was nothing I could do. I'm really hoping these exercises help because I don't have insurance and I probably can't afford surgery.

For almost a year I had tinnitus (I found out it was caused TMJ when I noticed some patterns). I went through so many videos about tinnitus, but they were only band aid solutions. Hi,
I had surgery on my mandible a few years ago; and ever since have gotten a clicking and pain in my jaw on the right side. It drives me nuts sometimes, and I feel like just ripping the whole bone out sometimes! I know that's morbid but my joint pain really gets on my nerve. I'm very glad your video came up and after doing the exercises I immediately feel better. Maybe it's just quietly focusing on it and doing the exercises in a controlled manner that's helping me so far.
    I will keep doing this.
and thank you, this means a lot to me!

Surgery can be rough on the jaw joints. Quiet focus and deliberate control will help a lot. Anxiety increases pain!

    • @rikal2027

I also had same surgery 2.5 years ago. It turned my life into a nightmare. I had severe jaw pain for a year, 24/7. I've been misdiagnosed many times, spent all my savings on wrong treatments. The pain finally stopped naturally but a few weeks later, I started having tinnitus and jaw clicking issue :( I don't know what to do next... I can't afford TMJ treatments right now, I don't even know what's going on with my jaw joints. Panoramic X rays were showing no arthritis,...

    • @Sophie-il9jk
      @Sophie-il9jk 5 лет назад

@@rikal2027 I can't say truthfully if the pain and clicking has gone already, but I have been doing the exercises everyday so far. What I realised is that I have to be gentle when doing them or I may make things worse. I also wear glasses. What I have realised is that when there is pressure on my right ear like wearing glasses or over ear headphones, that pressure causes me pain. so I take them off for a bit to ease the area. heat compresses also help when it gets very bad.

I don't understand the purpose of this exercise. Isn't this KEEPING the disc displaced? (It never clickes, never reduces and slips back into place over the condyle), and in fact further stretching out the ligaments? Are you basically just giving op on disc reduction, and working to build a pseudodisc?

  • @Aznjen96

My right side of my Jaw has started clicking about a month ago, the click was really strong for the first couple weeks and then I started massaging the TMJ and doing some simple exercise this has helped make the click less apparent. But when I am eating / chewing it constantly click and if I chew too quickly or bite down with more pressure it feels like it will lock. I can talk perfectly fine without clicking but its primarily opening my mouth a bit wider, specifically wide enough for chewing is when the click happens, it does not click when i close my jaw.
I noticed when i open my mouth the mouth shifts to the left a bit when it clicks. In order for my to comfortably chew without the click i tend to hold my right jaw and it helps but i think that has caused the slight shift then i open my mouth.
I started doing these exercises and it has helped me actually chew better with less of a click, since this has helped me open my mouth a bit wider and allowing me to chew with less clicking. However, my main question is when i am doing this exercise i want to make sure my jaw is opening straight and not shifting, so i started slowly opening up to when i feel the resistance pre click, i hold it for a few seconds and then i close, i keep doing this until i feel like i am opening my mouth a bit wider each time without a click (even though im still not fully opening my mouth yet). Although im not fully able to open my mouth all the way open unless i make my jaw click, so I'm wondering if the tight / resistance feeling will ever go away and if i will be able to open my mouth fully without the resistance and click? (P.S. I literally only started these exercises for 2 days) What are your thoughts, and also how often should i be doing these exercises?

This exercise feels good, thanks, it feels like it's helping somehow. Apart from the clicking I also have a chronic/daily tension headache, It is not only the annoying clicking it's also my masseter muscles being extremely tired and tight, and especially my temporalis muscles feel hard as a stone. No matter how hard I press on both the temporalis or try to massage them with my fingers/knuckes or literally with nutshell, the tightness/opression on both sides of head does not go away (it is not on my temples, but halfway between my ear's tragus and my temple, just above the zygomatic arch/bone. Its a daily pain. Its like after massaging with my knuckes on the temporalis I experience some small relief, but when I stop massaging the muscles get tight again, just like they were before the massage. Same with masseters and pterygoid muscles.

It will probably never be completely gone, but these exercises can help you develop the muscle memory that will allow you to move your jaw most of the time without the click. Remember to always go back to making sure you're maintaining your full range of motion!
