Snap crack pop here! It's like a deep crack sound that can sometimes feel crunchy. It comes and goes. I've noticed when I eat food that needs alot of chewing I end up cracking later that day. Esp when I yawn.

I have tmj, and my right jaw clicks and pops whenever I open it. It has also caused my jaw to be imbalanced with my right jaw heavier than my left. And I swear to god, it makes me feel so insecure, I have meltdowns sometimes. Today I was supposed to prepare a recorder speech for my classes, and had to cancel it all because my mouth would move sideways when I talk, and it's so embarrassing! I don't know what to do

I have the sound #2, the crackly noise, but I also get a "chalky" sound, feeling, as if 2 pieces of chalk are rubbing up against eachother, maybe its just be describing it differently. I remember the exact moment it started, I was having lunch at work, and while chewing I had a painful pop and immediate pain. It was painful to the point that I couldn't finish my lunch. And its progressed from there, to now daily popping while trying to chew, or even open my mouth just to brush my teeth, with the constant crackling, rubbing sensation.

@@rafvardanyan94 it subsided over time. I still get the slight crackly sound now, but no pain or discomfort when chewing or eating. My jaw hasn't popped or locked since and no pain when chewing. So I'm assuming it was some random jaw injury from chewing food, that just took a really long time to heal. I'd suggest asking your doctor and describing the exact symptoms, he may send you to a specialist/orthodontist.

Hi Priya, thank you for all the information you provide us with your videos. I had jaw popping on the right side of the jaw for about a year, and it got more frequent over time. I kind of thought it was normal. You know something like cracking your knuckles kinda thing. I popped my jaw like about three weeks ago, and then I got ear fullness. Like the ear pressure was off on the right side. I went to see a dentist, and he prescribed me some anti-inflammatory medication to take over 2 weeks, and then also told me to do some jaw exercises. The jaw popping has lessened significantly, however, the ear fullness still persists. Do you know when the ear fullness would go away?

Is there a way to get out of it without going for surgery? I think doing the exercises helps to release the tension, but on the other hand, could it be the cause of crashing the condyle or ligaments? (I don’t know if that’s the right term for it). I’m just so afraid that my joint will wear out from the exercises.

Thanks for the video Priya, In my case (anterior disc displacement and mild osteoarthritis crepitus sound and clicking) I don't hear the click when I close my jaw after having it opened, I only hear it when I open my jaw wide and, this is the weird part, I MYSELF CAN ACTIVATE THE CLICKING noise AT WILL having my mouth closed or also opened, does not matter, I hear it both ways. I don't know why I can activate the clicking whenever I want as if I was kind of suddenly moving the jaw muscles at will. But I don't hear the click upon closing of the mouth that is for sure. I was told my condyle and cranial cavity suffered a bone reshaping (not much but it happened) and the 24/7 painful crepitus is what's costing me my whole enjoyment of life having gone from a 9 to a 3 since all this started two years and a half ago. I literally losing money because I cannot work properly or concentrate. My temporal muscles are as hard as a STONE, no kidding.-. This tiny joint is literally messing up my life. I don't live in the US tough, so-...Thoughts of ending life also appear in my consciousness, so it has been really hard to live with this if not impossible. 2 years and a Half with temporal headaches!! Its unbearable pain. I tried to self-massage my temporal muscles but it is no use because they are as hard as a stone, literally, no amount of pressure produces any result and I have strong hands. My masseters are less hard but they are really hard as well. I have the sensation I am not helping them to relax, I noticed they relax a bit after massaging them, but after 10 seconds they get as hard as they were before the massage. They got already accustomed to being that hard.

Hi Priya, thank you for all the videos you have made they are so helpful and insightful! I have TMD which has progressed very badly over the course of a year and a half with my doctors not helping or understanding very well- where I'm at now my jaw pain has spread from just the right side to the left side also. I started off having the clicking popping sound on the right side of my jaw, and then lots of pain in my ear, jaw and head on the right side, but now I have crepitus and pain on the left side of my jaw as well, the grating crackling sounds being very apparent after talking. My current treatment plan is to have Invisalign which will grow my upper jaw (my upper jaw is apparently very small due to tongue tie and having teeth extracted) and this growth is meant to act as a long-term solution for TMD, relieving the compression of the joints. Do you think this treatment alone is enough to recover from severe TMD and specifically the crepitus in the left joint that I've had for the last month or so? Thanks so much again for the videos!

This pop typically means the disk within the joint is displaced; having said that, I cannot make a diagnosis over the internet. If that is what’s going on, we typically treat with orthotics, myofascial release and osteopathic manual jaw manipulation and even then it can take 4-6 months with weekly or biweekly appointments for symptoms to resolve.

when I open my mouth, the left side doesn't just move downwards, it moves outside/away from my face (huge bone bump right before the ear). It makes my face look off and wider on the left side when I open my mouth, although I've felt no pain yet, it"s been like 6 months, also I don't hear the pop every time but if I open my mouth and move my jaw to the left side and then try to close my mouth, it gets locked which recovers with a pop sound. Plus, my left cheek feels tight but I can open my mouth widely with no problem.

However, having lived with this pain for so long, it is simply a part of life. Here is the question. Have you ever come across someone who has a tic from all the tension in the jaw/face/ head region? Sometimes I cannot speak properly because of the tic. It also affects my swallowing, and even while I'm sitting quietly, the muscles on one side (always the same side) will contract. This causes me much embarrassment and difficulty speaking. If you have any advice, I would appreciate your expertise. Thank you for your consideration

I can't open my mouth after that it so painful. But then long story short i got ct scan and radiology, they say it all good. But now i often hearing sandy or grainy sound when i chewing with my left side of mouth, trying to move my mouth to left side (while my right side feel stiff and towing) or open my mouth big. But whenever i check up with my doctor, he never give me answer about all of this sound. He seems lost and idk.. its like this is the first time he hearing this case(?). And keep repeating the same question about what iam hearing is it clicking or krkrk which i have answered it alot of time its neither of them. i hear sand or grainy sound. He never answer any of my question but keep giving me medicine which very expensive (but actually after i searching the function of each medicine he give me, it didn't even connect with what i need). But after i watch ur yt video it help me. 😭💗 I know now i think i have crepitus and i should change my doctor :)
What do u think of my case doctor Priya?? Do u think i have crepitus And is it gonna be dangerous if i keep open my mouth big or chewing with my left side? Can it heal without medication?

The neck and the jaw are intimately related, so seeing a TMJ specialist along with a TMJ physical therapist will likely be helpful. The jaw joints are not built for a lot of lateral (side-to-side) movement, so I would recommend limiting that.

It sometimes gets stuck closed so I can only open my mouth a tiny bit and hurts if I try to open it too far…after a while of wiggling my jaw, it will then click and I can open it fully. The clicking always happens but my jaw getting stuck only happens sometimes but it’s starting to happen more regularly. I sometimes get a throbbing pain in my head which doesn’t last long, idk if this has anything to do with it. I’m 16 and although you obviously haven’t seen my in person do you know what this could be and if there is any way of stopping it? Great video!!

Have you seen a TMJ dentist or physical therapist? That would be a good place to start. Also, please watch my playlist "TMJ Exercises/Muscle Releases" and do these daily. With the way your symptoms are progressing - with the increased frequency of locking - you may lock and be unable to get your jaw unlocked.

    Hello doc..
Mine was actually when i opened my mouth fully..n its not just a “click” (assuming it’s an deep or inside click sound wich is only their own can hear it),well it’s more like a finger’s joint pops or crack sound wich is way louder until at least someone around close to you can hear this..literally like u just popped your finger or back..
That wasn’t ever happened to me until last March..
Just like any part of everyone’s body that feels like to be cracked bcoz of the tired feeling or something, that thing start from last March on my cheek (left cheek only)..at the first i’m starting to feel like sore (tired sore, not pain sore) in my left cheek like the feeling that we got from chewing too much or laughing too much..n i just simply open my mouth as wide as i can,n suddenly “TACK” (that was really loud single click sound n more like loud snap) n i was just shocked myself..n had the after feeling too as if I popped my finger..
N until now it’s just keep happening everytime i feel sore or something (i’m not sure what i actually feel) n i know exactly when it’s gonna happen if i open my mouth,i mean that’s not gonna happen everytime but i can feel it n tell the different between when it’s gonna happen or not..just like when what u feels that make u wanna pop the other bones or joints..
N i should call it wierd to have such thing in my left jaw bone don’t u think doc??
So what happened to me doc??
I’ve been on anymind of doctors n they found nothing..i know my own body n there’s something..i know it..what do you think it is doc??please help me..

Hello, I have realised that I have a click sound everytime I end a sentence (or almost every time). When I talk, it creates some muscle tension and so when I finish speaking, it releases the tension and suddenly it clicks. It mostly happens on the left side of my upper jaw, near the ear.
I had already felt it without really being aware of it most of the time. But I've really got aware of it recently to the point where I am now bothered by it. And it makes me feel uncomfortably because I'm worried that people may hear it too.
Could you give me some advice ?
My upper teeth are a bit too forward (when I close my mouth, most of my front teeth don't touch one another with the lower teeth). I wonder if the clicking comes from that problem.

Lots of information on the noises I hear. Crepitus on one side and a loud clonk on the other, where we found hardly any disc remaining.

Probably Ligaplex II. However, crepitus is a more advanced joint condition and is due to compression within the joint. Ligaplex II won't decompress the joint, but an orthotic will. Ideally, an orthotic and Ligaplex II would be best.

I find myself now constantly needing to pull my jaw to the right side, which caused that grinding/grissly noises, along with the typical cracks and pops. How does TMJ clicking is different from Eustachian Tube Dysfunction clicking? Many people can hear sound in ear when swallowing but they dont have TMJ?

    • @theTMJdoc

TMJ clicking is the articular disc coming in and out of alignment inside the joint. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction clicking - the sound heard - is likely the tube opening/closing quickly. I'm not entirely sure what's happening anatomically there so you may want to ask an ENT.

I suffer from bruxism. It was rather asymptomatic and only noticed because of teeth erosion. Used a night guard and had my teeth slightly ground in a couple points by a dentist and it apparently regressed completely until about 3 years ago, when I went to the dentist's studio for a check and informed them I had a sensitive molar (probably caused by some mild gum recession I had) and the assistant decided to make me do a test with colored papers and decided to ground a bit a contact on the molar she said was a possible cause.
Since then, my bruxism not only reappered, but went totally berserk, causing teeth pain, erosion, gum recession and occasional tinnitus and neck issues.
I tried various mouthguards, but they only seem to make it worse. They suggested psychotherapy and relaxation techniques, but nothing really helped substantially. I was starting to consider botox injection, although I've read they may lead to bone thinning and I already have that in my sinus.
Last month, I started noticing a crackling sound right under my left ear that occurs not when I open my jaw, clench, eat or move it in any fashion, but rather when I move my head up and down using my neck muscles. It does a single "Click" noise when I move my chin up and 3 consecutive "crackling" noises when I move my chin down, everytime. It's driving me nuts!
I saw another specialist in orthodontics and temporomandibular pain and he pretty much said bruxism is not curable and there are no other therapy options than nightguard. He suspects there's osteoarthrosis in the condile and suggested a CT scan, and he said a MRI could have even been more important, but he doubts it would be very visible due to a couple crowns I have on my molars on the opposite side.
I'm pretty depressed about the whole situation. Should I really give up, since there's no solution? I've heard about stem cell therapy that showed regeneration of the tissue. You mentioned the articular disc may regenerate. There's a TMJ specialist in Rome (I live in Italy) that performs the stem therapy. Maybe I consult him?

Well I wouldn’t say they’re normal because they indicate that something abnormal is going on in the joint. The TMJ is very unique- it is the most frequently used joint in the body and is a gliding hinge joint. Because it is so unique, it can’t easily be compared to other joints. Having said that, just because noises are present doesn’t necessarily mean those noises will progress into a locked jaw, degeneration, etc. I hope this answers your question?

Hi Dr. Most explanations I seen of disc displacement are shown in a straight line depression/elevation of the jaw. I have popping in the right side joint during left and right lateral excursion. Most often felt during chewing or direct excursion. I also get crepitus if I put finger pressure on that right tmj and depress the jaw. What is happening in the joint during this lateral excursion movement and popping? What muscles are involved in correcting it?

    • @theTMJdoc
      @theTMJdoc  3 года назад

The lateral pterygoid muscle and medial pterygoid muscle are involved in lateral excursive movements of the mandible. The jaw joints are not built for a lot of lateral movement, so limiting that can be helpful. I have also done a video called "Releasing the Lateral Pterygoid" which may also be helpful. Orthotics, myofascial release, and osteopathic manual jaw manipulation done over a 4-6 month span with weekly appointments have proven to be effective in quieting jaw joint noises.

I've had jaw problems for a lot of my life about 15 years ago I had an angel dentist that ground down some of my teeth a little so that my jaw aligned better which saved me. A few days ago my jaw started hurting again. Honestly I can live with the sound I just want my jaw to stop hurting.

My jaw has been very sore since I woke up about 2 days ago. When I try to eat anything, hard or even soft it makes my jaw sore, especially if it's a big food since I have to open my mouth wider. It's mainly on my left side. Also my Tinnitus got slightly worse, but I can live with that since I have already been having it, but what's really annoying is that as I open and close my mouth and clench my teeth, even when I'm eating anything I'll hear a very strange noise near my inner left ear that sounds very similar to a "crunch" sound. I can feel it vibrating in my left side of my teeth too. What could all this mean? What could have possibly caused it??
