    It seems that there is a difference between the explanation given at the min. 2:35 , where I understand that the back teeth need to get in contact 3xtap, and the end of the video where it seems that the front teeth need to touch and tap before repositioning the jaw in the resting position. Can you clarify?

      So this usually means that the condyle is slipping behind the disc on both sides when you close your teeth all the way together. You should avoid having your teeth touching together most of the time, especially if you are spending a lot of time with your teeth held together. If this problem just stays exactly like this, and you have no pain and no problems with eating or breathing or talking, then there probably is no need to pursue any sort of active or protective treatment. If the problem is painful, or if it makes it difficult to eat, breathe, or talk, then finding a TMJ "specialist" in your area is probably a good idea, at least to get a proper diagnosis. :-)

    For anyone going through these videos. I've started doing all the motions/exercises suggested. But the effects of this one seem immediate (although not the first few times I tried it). The way I have to do this to not hear the click is to very very very slowly open my jaw, I can open it all the way, but also keep my muscles relaxed. Then very very slowly close my jaw. However, if my jaw muscles are not COMPLETELY relaxed then I hear the pop/click. It takes a while to get used to opening and closing the jaw while also relaxing, but I hear/feel absolutely no clicking. No idea how effective this is long term, but it gives hope at least.

Something stuck on rear teeth to help relax muscles and create space for disc to return or 2. Botox in muscles and operation. I don’t know what to decide so am doing your exercises in the hope I won’t have to make any decision. Thank you.

    Hello Doctor, I'm from India. I'm 23. I'm experiencing clicking on my right TMJ for the last 2 years. It happens when I chew food, yawn, speak out loud. I don't have any pain but it's quite awkward. I really had no clue how it started. One morning I woke up and while having breakfast I first noticed it. I was shocked and visited many dentists but none of them were of any help. All of them gave different suggestions. I went through many videos in RUclips and came across your channel. The way you explained is so practical and natural. The clicking happens on my right TMJ when I slightly open my mouth. Once the click happens, I can perform the full range of jaw motion. But again during closing at the time when the lower jaw goes into the biting position the clicking happens once again. It happens every single time. I've had sleepless nights just because of this problem. I've seen your 1st video of this 4 video series and felt relief. It's by far the best video I've ever watched regarding TMD in RUclips. Thanks doctor, your video support my problem. I'm trying my best to keep it natural, adjusting the lower jaw to diminish the clicks, performing the tap tap tap technique all day long. I've been performing this for last 3 months. I've not experienced any change in my problem. Please Doctor, help me. Thanks in advance.

      Wearing a properly-made orthotic while you sleep would be helpful. But the reality is that the structures of the jaw joint are already loosened to the point that the condyle is moving backwards off the disc when you close your back teeth together. If you can prevent loading the retro-discal tissues some of the time, like when you sleep, this can help, and over time, perhaps the clicking will become less pronounced. But it might just always click. My ankles click whenever I walk. Unless I walk a certain way. It doesn't hurt, but sometimes it can be embarassing or annoying. Or, I can just not let it bother me. :-)

      @@BuffaloTMJ That's the reason my mouth feels so sore and stiff when I wake up in the morning than any other time of the day. It's with me for 2 years, I'm habituated. I'll be satisfied if the intensity of my clicking becomes less. Thanks Doctor. Just one more question. Are orthotic and occlusal splint same? I should definitely go for one.

    • @BuffaloTMJ
      @BuffaloTMJ  5 лет назад

      @@ShreyasChakraborty96 an orthotic, by definition, is intended to "straighten" a body part. In this case, an Occlusal Orthotic is intended to use the occlusion (the way the teeth fit together) to help straighten, or balance, or decompress, the jaw joints.

    • @BuffaloTMJ
      @BuffaloTMJ  5 лет назад

      A splint, by definition, is intended to immobilize, or stabilize, a body part. We splint teeth together to keep them from wiggling around when they are loose. A "bite splint" is really a misnomer, but usually when people use this term, they are referring to what I would call a "permissive" appliance. Different than an orthotic, which is a "directive" appliance.

    I experience no popping or clicking, just I m clenhcing and stressing my teeth while it affects my inner eardrum (many times the feeling is like I am on airplane and that I want to blow my nose to blow it out). My guess is that my new hearing earmolds (especially on the left one) affected the whole ear construction and jaw. I have had this for so long it is more annoying than anything else and while I know surgery is an option, I am not one to choose that as my first resort. That’s a last resort, if any.

    Dear Dr. Jeff, I have a clicking jaw like you described in part 2, so I just try not to open my mouth wide, however this past week I've been having clicking almost every time when I CLOSE my mouth, just when my teeth are fully touching each other, for example while chewing. It can hurt a little sometimes although mostly it doesn't, but it's becoming annoying. Do you know what could be causing this? In part 1 you described a condition when it clicks upon opening the mouth, but not when closing. If there is a video about this, please do let me know. Thank you so much for your videos!

      I'd really need to do a full diagnostic exam in order to know this. These types of things can't be described well over text.
      So first, it sounds like you need a diagnosis.
      But, regardless of clicking, you should try to open wide every day. Don't limit your opening to avoid the click.
      My right ankle clicks when I'm walking, especially up stairs. It can be annoying, but I would never consider a surgical procedure to "fix" it, and it's not painful or disruptive. My left knee clicks sometimes when I swing a golf club, and somtimes it hurts. Again, no way am I signing up for knee surgery. I do tai chi almost every day, and pay attention to my gait.
      ALL joints "want" to be able to move throughout their full range of motion, under LIGHT force.

    Hi Doctor, this may or maynot be due to tmj. But when I hear only an older man's voice, my inner left ear experiences thumping that only i hear inside my ear. This doesnot happen when younger people or women talk. This doesnot happen when i hear music. Only when i hear rough voices my left ear thumps for each and every word they speak. Ear doctors have examined my ears and have cleared wax. But nothing worked. This happens only when i hear low pitched voices. I believe this could be Tonic Tensor Tymphani Syndrome. But I am not sure.

    I've had this for years and I just pop my jaw a few times a day without even realizing most of the time, It's like a habit of mine... Sometimes when my jaw fails to pop, I don't get the satisfaction and it feels uncomfortable, so I keep trying until I get the pop. As time went by with popping my jaw, I started to realize that the way I speak was kinda getting weird and I think it's because of my jaw. It's like I can't even open my mouth properly to speak without a pop(Just a little open was fine). I just have to get through the pop while opening my mouth, even while I am eating. So I hope to just get rid of this...

    My jaw won’t open if I try to go straight up and down. I have to shift it to the side otherwise it locks and I physically cannot get it to open more. I had braces about 2-3 years ago and it made the problem a lot worse and more obvious. I’ve been to and orthodontist and an orthopedics doctor about it several times but they said it’s just something that I have to live with. Since then it has gotten significantly worse (about a year and a half) and clicks every time I open my mouth, along with constant locking and occasional pain. Do you know if this will cause permanent joint damage? And what would you recommend that I do?

    • @BuffaloTMJ
      @BuffaloTMJ  5 лет назад +1

      I don't know if it will, but I've seen that it can. I have great disrespect for doctors who tell people they "just have to live with" problems. This answer is given when the doctor just doesn't know what else to do. A truer statement would be "I don't know enough about this condition to help you." I would recommend that you find someone who specializes in Jaw Joint Dysfunction, who will be able to order an MRI of your jaw joints and know how to read it. A stabilization orthotic can be a tremendous help to reduce the compressive forces on the joint for a period of time.

      The left side pop loudly-VERY loudly when opening more than halfway.
      After try one of your techniques I do notice my jaw does not pop after opening past the pop, then coming to rest at the tips of my front teeth, then opening again. But it does pop again after I let it rest back. This popping happens every time I open more than halfway and takes a good amount of forcing to open past the pop. Any suggestions/diagnosis?

It’s free when when front teeth’s are connected. I can’t go straight rubbing my back teeth to from the jaw locks. This all is from left side of my jaw. Let me know what wrong.

    Hello Doctor,
    I have had this jaw clicking problem for more than a year now. It started when I went from a hot room to the cold washroom to take a bath on a cold rainy day and my left jaw locked. It was locked for 10 - 15 minutes and it opened finally but with these clicking sounds. Tell me what should I do? There is no pain but I want this problem to be eliminated. I fear it is damaging my jaw and effecting my listening.

    What if my jaw won’t fully open when going straight up & down? I have major clicking/popping on the left when i open kinda wide, and my jaw will only fully open by tracking towards the right before straightening back out. I know i have a slight overbite, and i can only fully open without any clicking/shifting if i extend my mandible way beyond my maxilla. I’m 24 and my jaw has been this way for as long as I know.
    I’ve been told i have a disc slipping on the left. I’ve had 3 orthodontists say I’m ineligible for any ortho treatment due to short anterior teeth roots. One wants to get me scanned for a night splint and see a physical therapist an hour+ away from me (in another state). He didn’t seem very confident in a solution though..
    Due to my occlusion, i notice i’m only chewing foods on my left side. It almost feels like my teeth hit first on the left, ever so slightly. When i chew on my right, my jaw clicks and and moves away from where i want to chew, and just feels weird like my jaw wants to lock onto my left molars better.
    I’m in constant soreness & discomfort. I also think i have pulsatile tinnitus in my right ear that im wondering if it could be related? I’m starting to get ridiculously frustrated with this pain & lack of solutions. If it’s just muscle related as my orthodontist says, can i get botox to relieve my symptoms for a little while? What kind of professional should i be seeking out for my options?

      Not normal, but probably no big deal at this point. It would still probably make sense for you to wear a protective orthotic at night. Don't worry about the sound, and look for some ways to manage your anxiety. Meditation is my favorite place to start.

    So I've been having a popping/clicking jaw for quite some time now. When I force my jaw back a bit (or .. straight down actually) while opening it doesn't happen, but this won't allow me to open up my mouth that far. (A banana barely fits through the gap between my teeth). When I open my jaw "naturally" it goes forward a tat. This causes it to pop, so taking larger bites of food, or chewing on bigger bits is really hard without my jaw popping forward. So it basically feels like unhinging my jaw. Do these exercises apply to my situation as well?

      Treat the sleep apnea with an oral appliance first, and see if the jaw popping reduces. You'll need to find a dentist who treats TMJ and airway problems.

    • @BuffaloTMJ
      @BuffaloTMJ  5 лет назад +2

      Yep! The point here is to show you that often the jaw CAN move in a way that doesn't click or lock, but our tendencies and habits take over when we are not conscious...which is MOST of the time. The more you can teach your jaw...and other body parts...stable functional movement patterns, the more comfortable you should be.

    Hello. What about molar tooth extraction? I know there's a chance that this can make a joint problem. But, as a specialist, what do you say? Is this situation a serious threat and cause of jaw joint problems?

    • @BuffaloTMJ
      @BuffaloTMJ  5 лет назад +1

      Taking a molar out can change the functional mechanics of chewing, and CAN lead to dysfunction within the joint structures, but usually in conjunction with significant parafunctional activity, i.e. clenching/grinding.

Current exercises are similar to this video and some massaging of the jaw muscles. No side to side exercises yet. My clicking is definitely almost gone away. • @BuffaloTMJ
      @BuffaloTMJ  5 лет назад +1

      So the click comes from the right joint area, correct? Your right disc is dislocated when you close. When you move to the left, the condyle moves onto the disc. This is a GOOD thing. If you can just work on making it click SOFTLY, there is a chance the disc will remodel enough so that you don't lose range of motion. Part one is the video you'll want to follow.

      @@noconintended just make sure you maintain good range of motion, and practice opening on center, with or without the clicking. An examination is necessary to really determine where the click is coming from, and what the cause really is. Can't do that on youtube. :-)

      Yes, you should be able to do these exercises.
