    It is the posture that causes face asymmetry. I changed my posture, and my face asymmetry disappeared. My case was easy because I knew what caused posture asymmetry in the first place. I practiced the Yoga Lotus pose (Padmasana) one-sidedly for some time. My pelvis became asymmetrical, and my face started losing symmetry, jaw, eyes etc. As soon as I realized what the problem was and started practicing the Yoga Lotus pose with another leg below, my facial asymmetry disappeared in only two days (!) after several years of suffering. I should thank Neal Hallinan for this realization and healing. The main realization is that the jaw and pelvis are linked and can influence each other.

    A lot of assymetry is also caused simply by teeth not being on the right place on your jaw. This can be the upper or lower jaw, but with low jaw assymetry like a twist its usually teeth position. Unfortunately, a lot of orthodontists don't know anything about it and just straighten teeth in the wrong position. If you ask them how to fix it they will tell you to get jaw surgury. There are doctors in America who do treat it. Look for a cosmetic dentist who looks at tmj and works with an orthodontist. They will put your teeth in the correct position and fix most if not all your facial assymetry. These things are usually not covered by insurance however so expect to pay close to 8k or so.

    Mate, you have opened a door here I never knew existed!
    I had only been familiar with the term "sphenoid" in the context of sinuses - due to my life-long problems there. When you mentioned the bone, and the tilting thereof, my face started making sense.
    The entire left hemisphere of my skull, and my face, is smaller than the right. Left jaw slants outward from the ear to the corner of the jaw, but is more tapered and higher than the right, from the corner, down to the chin. Left eye is slightly higher than the right. Nose has a septal deviation to the right.
    Right jaw is fuller and lower. Back of the head is fuller than the left. Left/back is flat at the base of the skull. Left nostril appears larger than the right.
    Your video instantly put so much in place that I could never put my finger on, and has given way to a whole bunch of research for me to dive into!

    That makes sense. I think this is why my face is asymmetrical. My left upper palate is higher than the right due to asymmetrical tongue posture (I've been putting more pressure on my left than right). So, since the right is lower, my sphenoid tilts more to the right side and is making everything on my right side lower.

    Dear Conor, that was a good presentation. You may not know but the ALF appliance was adapted from my own Biobloc Stage 1 appliance. You may have heard that I correct cranial growth by changing posture rather than manipulation. Many people call this mewing.
    I am sure you would agree many unilateral deviations occur during child birth and to a varying extent can be corrected by manipulation. this usually need repeating over time. You may not know that substantial bony changes can be achieved just by changing posture. W achieve this with a flange dropped from an upper expansion appliance which swings the jaw to one side or the other. I wish you success Prof John Mew.

      When doing the jaw shift exercise, the goal is to release tension and relax your jaw muscles. To do this, you'll want to place your fingers on the side of your face that's opposite to the direction your jaw is shifted.
      So, if your jaw is shifted to the left, you would place your fingers on the right side of your face, and vice versa.
      Here's how to do the exercise:
      1. Place your fingers on the side of your face, opposite to the direction your jaw is shifted.
      2. Gently press your fingers against your face, feeling for the jaw bone.
      3. Slowly shift your jaw to the opposite side, keeping your fingers in place.
      4. Hold for a few seconds, then release.
      5. Repeat on the other side.
      Remember to be gentle and don't force your jaw beyond a comfortable range of motion.

    Craniosacral therapy (CST) manipulates the bones of the skull and I believe can affect the positioning of the sphenoid bone. Also, some chiropractors can do a cranial facial release where they use a balloon to adjust your sphenoid bone into the right position. Dr. Mew recently posted about it on his RUclips channel.

    If you dont already have perfect teeth and a wide smile here is a GREAT advice;
    Use a palatal expander.
    I had some crowding and needed to expand the palate (which was steep) and now after more than 10 month its crazy what difference it made on the symmetry, somehting that was just a bonus although I was familiar with the effect expanders would have before starting.
    Some differences, eye brows are now way more similar and have more symmetrical angle, nose more straight, eye symmetry has greatly improved and are more sharp, cheek bones are wider and whole face looks healthier.

    The right side of my face is “squished” so my jaw leans to the right and my right eye is lower.
    Should I push to the right side with my fingers on the left side (so push towards the problem side)

      @@simulatingme at 5:02 from what I understand, if your right eye is lower, means that your jaw is likely to tip more to the left side of the face. But seeing the exercise he demonstrated, it doesn't matter which side of the eye is lower, you just need to do the realignment of the jaw so that it will be more centred, and then the eye position will follow. Have you ever tried mewing?

    If the mandible is deviated to one side (you mention the left in your example) why would the exercise you recommend be to shift the jaw to the right to produce an isometric contraction on the lateral pterygoid on the same side the deviation is occurring? It objectively makes no sense. If anything you’d want to strengthen the lateral pterygoid of the opposite side of the deviation. I.e if your mandible is deviated to the right you’d want to strengthen the left lateral pterygoid.

    • @conorharris
      @conorharris  7 месяцев назад +1

      It would certainly seem the way you mention it but let us consider the anatomy more closely.
      The lateral pterygoid (LP) has two heads that attach to the sphenoid bone (upper to greater wing and lower to pterygoid plate) the other ends attach to the TM Joint capsule and to the mandible just below the joint. Visualize, then, that is runs from medial origin down and out and from anterior to posterior to lateral insertion on the mandible. It acts to protrude the mandible when it shortens. Also the left LP acts to move the mandible to the right. We are activating the left LP in the example to create multiple effects however…on the sphenoid and less so on the mandible!
      Those effects of the left LP on the sphenoid will increase left molar contact which will be decreased in many instances if the body pattern causes leftward deviation of the mandible. By protruding the mandible we partially shorten the LP. Then, by isometrically activating that LP (slight pressure on the right side of the chin) we cause movement of the sphenoid thru action on the pterygoid plate. This action both turns the sphenoid body to the left in the transverse plane and raises the left side of the sphenoid on the frontal plane. Voila! Left bite restored!
      THAT is what we are after!
      Sorry for the long answer but your question was so good and important, we just wanted to do it justice.

      @@conorharris Incredible. Thank you for the time and effort in that response. I’ve just started putting forth some effort in understanding jaw function/dysfunction, and that really helped in shoring up a few things I was unsure about. As I understand it, that exercise will also cause *some* ipsilateral contraction of temporalis? I did it extremely lightly, and I think that is what I felt and confused it for contraction of the right LP. Testing again (and again extremely lightly) I do indeed feel the contraction coming from the LP contralateral to the jaw deviation. BRAVO!
