- Today’s video includes four exercises that can help reduce jaw or temporomandibular (TMJ) pain and improve jaw mobility and function.
Our two temporomandibular (TMJ) joints connect the mandible and the temporal bones together and allow a complex combination of hinge and gliding movements. The joints are composed of synovial fluid, cartilage and a joint capsule, like other synovial joints, but also contains a fibrocartilaginous disc.
Many people seek out care related to temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) each year. These issues can result from direct injury, inflammation of the joints and/or overuse of the region. Furthermore, sleep issues related to the jaw (grinding, clenching, etc) and painful neck problems can also contribute to jaw dysfunction.
Make sure to checkout my new pain & injury rehab book. It includes comprehensive programs for the 50 most common orthopedic issues, including a program for TMJ pain. Click the link to learn more. a.co/d/0HzBHAa
The deep neck flexor exercise really helps with the pain. Thank you so much.
It’s often helpful to strengthen the neck when treating jaw pain.
Thank you! Been looking for this, really appreciate it.
Thanks for keeping it "bite-sized:" Easy to understand, remember and do.
No problem! I’m glad my videos have been helpful to you.
such a good video. i’m having issues with my jaw atm. it flares every now and again, but this flare is really bad as can’t open my mouth very wide or chew food. video 1 is the best one for me. that muscle for me is massively swollen. definitely best video on line.

Does your TMJ causing any ring or Tinnitus in your ears?
Thank you.
@@majidkashani6881thats because of the inflammation in the tmj.
@@majidkashani6881 seems yes, i have TMJ since 20+ yrs and recently last year tinnitus too, after wisdom tooth removal, TMJ got worse too,

Make a lot of sense. I always think my neck trigger the TMJ issue.
There’s a lot of research connecting the neck and TMJ.

Welcome
Hey Tom, I have a constantly cracking TMJ joint and this lead to unfortunate gum retractions near my teeth due to improper bite mechanics and force loading. Is there any way that TMJ exercises can cause soft/hard tissue changes that would better help re-align the jaw and redistribute forces?
Yes, in some cases, manual therapy and specific therapeutic exercises can help improve jaw, mechanics and alignment. If you can find a physical therapist who specializes in TMJ care, they can help design a program.
Hello hi I have problem with TMJ for five years and that’s really give me pain and one side. Can you tell me what they should do? I really appreciate if you get back to me.
Dr. I'm tmj patient , I'm treating almost 2 year & almost completed . Doctor said gap fill left only..But when I'm hearing loud noises at the time feeling jaw paining on left side . So how can i strength my jaw? any exercises is there? Please help me 😢🙏
Very helpful. Thank you. Along with the jaw pain, I also get earache. Is this normal?
You’re welcome. Yes, some people will experience an earache when their TMJ area is irritated.
Question on the deep neck flexor strengthen, if you do that often is there a chance that can actually create a reverse curve of the neck? I understand it being stretched if you have forward head posture but I wonder if you don't have forward head posture if that exercise could be harmful?
No, that exercise won’t change the curvature of your neck. It will simply improve strength of the neck flexors.
idk something about the first exercise of massaging the muscle next to the bone really does work
as i hold it down i can open my mouth freely
Glad that technique helped you!
Are there standing variations or alternatives for strengthing the deep neck flexors? Thx!
Yes, my pt told me to lay flat and push my head into the ground (on a soft surface), also do the double chin and look down like nodding. I don't think I should do the head lift bc then the muscles on the side of my neck start flexing and my pt said he wants those muscles to stop compensating for the others
Great video, helps a bit so far but too early to say. My jaw pain/tension has built up over the course of a month or so and now its really bad, my faceshape has changed (to square shaped) and my cheeks and jaws are all swollen! Will my face go back to normal or am i cursed to look like a deformed version of myself forever? Please answer... I also have numbness and a very strange sensation in my cheeks. Never experienced it this bad before, i'm a bit scared.
Yes, things can definitely return back to normal, but I would recommend seeing a physical therapist in your area who specializes in TMJ care.
@@RehabScience Thank you, i will look into it and hopefully i can get some help.
I have exactly your symptoms, it's been three weeks that I realised my face is changing the same as yours.
I hope we both and others who have the same problem, get better.
That sensation is sometimes terrifies me, like someone punched me badly.
Many thanks for sharing your problem.
waiting video for lower biceps tendonits
I will try to do that one soon 👍
@@RehabScience PLEASE DO NOT FORGET
Ive been trying this and MANY OTHER EXCERISES and NOTHING seems to be working ITS HONESTLY GETTING ANNOYING
I’m having a jaw pain right now it’s so painful the pain bothers me off and on every few months when it pain the pain stay on for three to four months
Is there a fix ?
I got punched in the face and now my jaw muscle on the left side of face hurts . Is it temporary or not ???
How can we strengthen temporalis muscle using resistance whether we use our hands as resistance
You can apply downward pressure to the chin and then slowly open and close the jaw to strengthen the temporalis and masseter.
I hope this will help me.. i had this locking .and clicking sounds on my jaw ..especialy after an overnight sleep,, when im about to have my breakfast,, the first ever opening of my mouth its tight then youll hear the strong click sound of my jaw.. even my daughter who sits beside me can hear the sound telling me "theres a click sounds from your mouth"
I hope you find these strategies to be helpful. If not, I would recommend seeing a physical therapist in your area who specializes in TMJ rehab.
