  • Today’s video includes four exercises that can help reduce jaw or temporomandibular (TMJ) pain and improve jaw mobility and function.
    Our two temporomandibular (TMJ) joints connect the mandible and the temporal bones together and allow a complex combination of hinge and gliding movements. The joints are composed of synovial fluid, cartilage and a joint capsule, like other synovial joints, but also contains a fibrocartilaginous disc.
    Many people seek out care related to temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) each year. These issues can result from direct injury, inflammation of the joints and/or overuse of the region. Furthermore, sleep issues related to the jaw (grinding, clenching, etc) and painful neck problems can also contribute to jaw dysfunction.
    Make sure to checkout my new pain & injury rehab book. It includes comprehensive programs for the 50 most common orthopedic issues, including a program for TMJ pain. Click the link to learn more. a.co/d/0HzBHAa

    Hey Tom, I have a constantly cracking TMJ joint and this lead to unfortunate gum retractions near my teeth due to improper bite mechanics and force loading. Is there any way that TMJ exercises can cause soft/hard tissue changes that would better help re-align the jaw and redistribute forces?

    • @RehabScience
      @RehabScience  Год назад

      Yes, in some cases, manual therapy and specific therapeutic exercises can help improve jaw, mechanics and alignment. If you can find a physical therapist who specializes in TMJ care, they can help design a program.

    Question on the deep neck flexor strengthen, if you do that often is there a chance that can actually create a reverse curve of the neck? I understand it being stretched if you have forward head posture but I wonder if you don't have forward head posture if that exercise could be harmful?

    • @RehabScience
      @RehabScience  4 месяца назад

      No, that exercise won’t change the curvature of your neck. It will simply improve strength of the neck flexors.

    • @meegy2
      @meegy2 4 месяца назад

      Yes, my pt told me to lay flat and push my head into the ground (on a soft surface), also do the double chin and look down like nodding. I don't think I should do the head lift bc then the muscles on the side of my neck start flexing and my pt said he wants those muscles to stop compensating for the others

    Great video, helps a bit so far but too early to say. My jaw pain/tension has built up over the course of a month or so and now its really bad, my faceshape has changed (to square shaped) and my cheeks and jaws are all swollen! Will my face go back to normal or am i cursed to look like a deformed version of myself forever? Please answer... I also have numbness and a very strange sensation in my cheeks. Never experienced it this bad before, i'm a bit scared.

      You can apply downward pressure to the chin and then slowly open and close the jaw to strengthen the temporalis and masseter.
