I tried to find the "Hot pipes" in March on an unusually warm day. I'd caught the train in to Brighton and walked almost there only to turn back as I was shattered. Almost a 10 mile walk with a heavy camera bag & tripod! I now have a better understanding of it's location and hope to be there tomorrow (Saturday) for the midday high tide. :)
Hi Richard, yes this location is in a very strange position when trying to navigate by train or roads. I tend to drive and park close to the Grange Road or Albion Street and walk across the foot bridge (I think that is what I did in this video). If you are going by train then Southwick Station is a short walk, but you have probably figured this out already. If you are not already using it, download the what3words app, as I provide exact locations of all my photos in the videos to help out others such as yourself. I hope you got some good shots!
I like this video mostly because of the discussion. 1) We all get location exhaustion but the key with your local landmarks and camera a club cliches is to watch for different light and to wait for some different weather conditions.. You might be getting the 'same old shot' but if you add a storm and, in this case, some waves then the image takes on a different energy. 2) The benefit of re-shooting the same place is you learn to correct the mistakes you made the previous time. It's like a relationship thing. 3) Shooting with other photographers is a fun or social event, and you can copy or share techniques - but, generally, I find having company distracts you from seeing something original. 4) With seascapes, it helps if you swim or surf because that gets you a better understanding of tides and waves. The sun and moon and the ocean have such a strong relationship. A good photographer is part of that family. 5) The Hotpipe, or 'Hotpipes' is indeed a jetty carrying the coolant water from the nearby Southwick power station, with warm (and clean) water frequently pumped out of the jetty's seaward end. It's the jetty itself which, combined with tidal currents, sets up sandbanks on either side, which then create surfing waves because those sandbars exaggerate and groom the local groundswell. There's also a chalk seabed 'reef', further out to sea but nearby. When the proper waves arrive it's often from storms that happened hundreds of miles away. The Hoptpipe wave, when it properly works, is quite a rare or even a unique thing for our area. 6) There is a new car parking strip right next to the Hotpipe jetty, but don't just pull over there and think you can sit in your car and watch the sea. If you don't pay for the parking via your phone app immediately then you will get a parking fine through the post, because there are CCTV parking cameras watching your arrival. 7)The more we photograph the same spot, the more we appreciate all the aspects of that location that the casual visitor might not see or appreciate. 8) Those metal posts at Hotpipes are not all vertical, and nor are they perpendicular to the wonky jetty fences. 9) It's worth learning the difference between spring tides and neap tides, not least because of the speed the water level changes. Spring tides obviously have a much greater height range but the water also rises and lowers more quickly. Neap tides, by comparison, are sleepy and non-moving.
This is an amazing response, Thanks. So much to take in, but you have some great points and local knowledge also. Collaborating with other photographers is great, you learn and share - which is key. From my perspective is does distract from making my videos sometimes. I am lucky that everyone that I have included in my videos is quite natural in front of the camera, but not everyone is prepared to make a video for the internet on a Sunday morning when they thought they were just getting out with their camera! The only thing that annoyed me about the metal poles in this image is that they don’t all have sign post at the top of them, there is one missing on the left. Sure, I could have added one - but I just didn’t feel like that was right in this instance. I think I am more comfortable removing objects in photos than adding them. New video out tonight, which you will like. I am heading to Halnaker tree tunnel. Another hotspot for photographers!
Thanks Allen, the harbour itself isn’t so pretty - so I get the gritty bit, but it the right light there are some nice shots to be had there. BUT that’s not really my thing. I don’t think I have ever photographed the Brighton Marina for that reason, its a bit too industrial looking, but not in a derelict warehouse interesting kind of way. Once you are on the beach though, its lovely!
Enjoyed the video Ben, I'm super guilty of getting stuck into the same area over and over. Rinsing it dry and then feeling deflated when I should be finding new locations. The hotpipes is a location I photographed years ago but haven't been back. Bit as Gordon says I do like to limit the kit I take with me helps in big way.
Same, I hadn’t shot this for years - I guess I was ok with the shot that I had, but actually the new one is way better! Plus I got to share it with everyone - which makes it a whole new experience. And I cant believe we have never bumped into each other…yet!
Love your locations Ben. I live near Portsmouth and I go out to shoot seascapes most days but would love to travel further a field. I spent a few days at Swanborough Lakes in October, which was lovely but would love to discover more about East Sussex. Keep up with the fantastic vlogs, cheers.
Cheers Andrew, Portsmouth is far enough journey just for a sunrise, but if you do make it out this direction again I supply the what3words locations on the vast majority of the photos so that you can find your way there. I have not been to Swanborough lakes, but I have seen them reflecting the rising sun from the top of the Swanborough Hill.
Been up Cissbury Ring? If you walk up on the South Downs from outside Woodingdean to Rodmell you can see the coast as well as quite a way inland including the village Kingston (there is a dewpond up on the downs above the village) & Lewes.
I have indeed, I walked up that hill three times in one day when I was making a review of the Go Pro when it was released last year. Lovely views, and some wild horses! And I am not sure if you have only just found my channel, but if you take a look at my landscape playlist you will see that I have worn out plenty of shoes walking from Lewis, Kingston, Falmer etc. The video that I just published a few weeks ago was one of my favourite spots. ruclips.net/video/0mA-IZwobcM/видео.html
Nice video Ben and great photos! I find forcing yourself to go out with one fixed focal length lens, probably a slightly different one to usual as well, can be a good way to re-inspire and challenge yourself in familiar locations. Or to borrow someone else's camera to see if that makes you feel differently.
Thanks Gordon, you know I like my primes, perhaps for that reason - I zoom with my feet. I think I will head out with my 20mm and see what I come back with. I usually go out with the 50mm but that is too safe! I might head out to Brighton one evening and shoot the Christmas lights, wide!
great set of images Ben and the sea defences are a great subject for black and white fine art. I like the challenge of going back to local places as the conditions are always different so it's a challneg to take a different image.

Hi Chris, yes I saw a post of your yesterday with a whole collection of Shoreham based images. You have more than I do! Try to catch the tide between 3-4 metres for the sweet spot on the tides.
@@benharveyphotography That wasn't all of them you saw yesterday either. Anyway, it was worth it as that post resulted in a sale of a 60 x 40cm framed & mounted black & white print. B&W framed prints seem to be my thing these days, sales-wise, though usually, they are of people rather than landscapes, but my new client after looking through loads of shots, described in detail what she wanted & I had exactly what she asked for. Sometimes it's a process, but we got there in the end. It's great when other (not you in this instance) great photographers recommend you to potential clients, as per yesterday's post.

I wish I had the coast where I could bike to it. Now, I am not that far, about 90 km. But doing it almost every weekend, when I can get out for a longer period of time, it does get tedious. I wouldn't so much want a time travel machine but a teleporting device, so I could hit all the local spots quicker than the one hour it takes me to get there driving. Wait until they make drones that are of good photo quality and can fly for about four or five hours, and my whole approach to taking pictures will experience a seismic change!!
Would you like me to do a teleportation transition for you in my next video - I will wear some futuristic clothes and I will have a voice activated camera that has legs and I don’t have to carry it. Well, the drone carry’s my camera so that I can keep my hands free to reply to RUclips comments :-)
Time travel is a great feature (sure it is but even as a video edit great). I liked the first set of images already and thought how can the scenery look that good. The second set in better light I liked even more. Long time friend of your channel and thumbs up for this vid. Kudos to the artist who made the song you used.
I think the images in this one video alone are the accumulation of maybe 4 or 5 visits - apologies if I made it look easy! Glad you liked the images though, and the music if from Epidemic sound, its a subscription that I pay for - they have some great music on there.
I cut out a section of the video where I talked about going on the eastern arm and shooting down from there, but Shoreham Harbour now lock that off during good lighting hours as the fisherman’s head torches were interfering with navigation. So this is no longer an option unfortunately. Good to have another local photographer in the comments. Come say hello if you see a man talking to himself with a camera in hand :-)
I don’t think I have. I have been up Mill Hill, and I have photographed Combes Hill from Steyning Bowl. Is that to photograph The cement works itself or the South Downs in general?
Great Long Exposures but I totally get what you mean. My immediate area is great for Landscapes but for my Street, forget it, the nearest town I find I spend an hour at best so usually travel into Manchester. Now I do love Manchester, I was born around a mile and half from the city centre, brought up there but moved to where I am now nearly 16 years ago as my wife is from here. I go into Manchester at least once a week but now, like you, I’m getting bored of it, the same places , same shots, sometimes even the same people. My problem is cash, it’s a little in short supply so travelling isn’t that easy unfortunately.
Yes, money and time - if only there was more of it! I have photographed Manchester for a client, to sell property of plan. I had to create some lifestyle images, I shot media city, the streets, people, the football stadium etc etc. I enjoyed my time in Manchester but I was only there for a couple of days. I wonder if there is anywhere in the world that you wouldn’t get tired of?
@@benharveyphotography I don’t think it’s about being tired of a place but needing a break rather than going to the same place all the time, I know I’ve only shot the tiniest amount of London but it’s also so much bigger. If I could even go to Manchester at different times but that’s not always possible, I have a number of health issues so can have trouble sleeping so it’s not always possible to drive, I get too tired but when I’m tired I mean tired to the point my eyes close, just wish it would happen at the right time. The transport system with the trans is so much better but it doesn’t run my side of the city, even when they finally do that, which could be never, it will only go as far as Bolton but I live out in the sticks. I have Sleep Apnea as of last year and was just getting to the point I was sleeping better when I got Covid and Pneumonia in September and it’s like I’m starting from scratch, I’ll get there and as long as my main health issue is ok I’m good, I was born with Kidney failure and on my 4th Transplant. Anyway, I stop going on and try something new, got a longer lens on the way so I’ll give that a whirl.
If you are local, yes - you have the what3words for this location now. If you are in Sussex I have plenty of other great locations to photograph on my channel also.

If I could even go to Manchester at different times but that’s not always possible, I have a number of health issues so can have trouble sleeping so it’s not always possible to drive, I get too tired but when I’m tired I mean tired to the point my eyes close, just wish it would happen at the right time. The transport system with the trans is so much better but it doesn’t run my side of the city, even when they finally do that, which could be never, it will only go as far as Bolton but I live out in the sticks.
I have Sleep Apnea as of last year and was just getting to the point I was sleeping better when I got Covid and Pneumonia in September and it’s like I’m starting from scratch, I’ll get there and as long as my main health issue is ok I’m good, I was born with Kidney failure and on my 4th Transplant.
Anyway, I stop going on and try something new, got a longer lens on the way so I’ll give that a whirl.
