I think Hyundai did a fantastic job on choosing the name "Genesis", feels luxurious and sophisticated, also Hyundai Corp (parent company of Hyundai Motor) is one of the few motor companies that can cover the entire product lines within themselves, not only it has the capability to make almost all auto parts but through their subsidiary (Hyundai Merchant Marine), they have a capability to ship the auto vehicles oversea (vessel shipping) themselves, and not to mention they make their own ship (vessel) from Hyundai Heavy Industries as well. Test drove both of them........It’s a tough choice.......I have owned a 2010 and currently own a 2016 MDX..........The Genesis is very compelling. I think I prefer the MDX styling over the GV80 since I think it will wear better over time. The interior probably goes to the GV80. I was hoping for a bit more of the wood application in the MDX but I think Acura was going for a more “sporty” German car like appearance with the use of the piano black plastic. The GV80 does have a touch screen infotainment system but IMO it is a little too far away to easily and safely use it and the scrolling disk is not intuitive enough. I’m going with the unpopular choice and say the Acura touchpad is easier to use once you get use to it. Nothing really compares to the smoothness of a V6 over a 4 cylinder. The GV80 2.5 4 cylinder may be quieter decibel wise but it doesn’t run as smoothly as the MDX’s V6. It will be interesting to see a comparison between the Type S MDX and the top of the line 3.5 V6 Turbo of the GV80. I’m suspecting that the MDX will be a few thousand less than the $72000 price point for the GV80 with the Prestige Package. I’ve heard rumors of an air suspension and matte finish paint in addition to the massaging front seats that were seen on the prototype. For the models you reviewed I personally give the edge to the MDX because of it’s seating, storage and slightly better overall usability.
@@bg693 I think there will be a matte paint option like the prototype........I suspected that the air suspension was a legitimately going to be on the Type S. I’m not a huge fan but that puts it squarely in league with the German offerings. It’s clear what Acura is going for........A vehicle that offers a little bit of everything including above average handling and performance as oppose to the GV80 which appears to be more “luxury” oriented. That said I think the GV70 is where Genesis throws its performance chips. Which is interesting since I think that right away the GV70 will out perform the RDX which would be its likely competition with Acura. Having said all that I think Acura has done enough to hold onto its market share from Genesis.......at least for now anyway. Things will really heat up when Genesis brings things like the virtual navigation system to the US GV80 models.
We’re buying an MDX. There’s just something about the reliability of that 6cyl motor, having it naturally aspirated, the 10speed transmission. They didn’t talk about the all-wheel drive system and being able to use the third row with kids….
Genesis has concierges that come to your house to make test drives and sell you one if you want. If you do buy one, they deliver on to your house in an LED-lit glass container, you have 5 year free maintenance, they pick your car up for maintenance and leave you another Genesis loaner in the meantime. THAT's the true luxury experience, not having to drive all the way to a dealership to wait for hours in a boring room while sipping coffee. Who needs dealerships??

@@maga7297 of course I do, I have been driving them for 15 years. No argument that in the race to add features, luxury and safety, sacrifices have been made mechanically by all manufacturers. Overall Honda/Acura reliability is rivaled only by Toyota.
For me I would definitely give points to MDX for the following features: Walk away auto lock +.5 point to MDX, Walk away Auto closing tailgate:+ .5 point to MDX, back up camera washer: + .5 point to MDX. Also, front passenger also has 3 person memory seat, same adjustment as the driver’s seat, should add another .5 point to MDX if such feature is not offered on GV80.
Does the auto closing tailgate work with auto lock? Meaning, can I take my last batch of groceries using auto closing tail gate and be done with the the locking for the trip?
@@godofwar4276 that’s also my question, I personally think that it will also lock the door, but I am not sure obviously, you should probably ask your Acura dealership or go to the dealership and try it yourself.
Let’s subtract points for lack of valet, park assist, lane-change assist, drive assist/co-pilot, no camera assisted turn, no flyover and pan mode in the 360 camera, no in motion camera, etc.
Keep in mind that the Acura tested is the top of the line for what is available right now and the GV80 tested is towards the lower end of their product lineup. There really is no comparison between the 2 when you compare the best of what Genesis has to offer as to what Acura has to offer.
Having owned 15 + Acuras over the years and also running numbers on GV80, I would say that cost of entry into the brand and overall cost of ownership for the Genesis is at least 30% higher than the Acura. Also if you lease, the ease of the leasing process due to Acura’s aggressive discounts and high residual values, places Acura ahead - for me at least.
Test drive the genesis GV80 2.5 and fall in love with it was about to buy it went to acura and test drive the MDX then went back to buy GV80 with advanced trim drive it again and felt the difference. It's luxury but won't be the car to drive every day for an active driver . It feels like it's hard to drive around and felt like the MDX sportier easier with better driving dynamics.
I just bought the exact GV80 model reviewed. It was between the new MDX and Audi Q7. Everything mentioned in this review I would agree. I did not want the third seat but wish the wheel hubs from Acura were on the GV80 along with their wireless phone AP.
Would take that MDX any day far better at 60k than the gv80. looks better, handles better, better engine, better built, the interior is debatable but I prefer the MDX. The MDX also has more features at 60k. The SH-AWD should’ve been a point and the rear cam washer a .5 but still great review. Acura has the clear win to me.
@@MikeJones-on9vm gv80 has much more features. Don’t you know hyundai/Kia:genesis by now. The gv80 looks better, just as good of an engine, it’s build just as well badge snob. SH-AWD, isn’t that great. The awd in the genesis is Great.

I would choose the MDX. I think the Genesis is a great car, but there is a few aspects where it’s kind of a dealbreaker. 1.) The giant grill, because its well, big, but also it has a lot of chrome. 2.) The steering wheel because it looks like something out of a hearse. 3.) It’s not original because it’s copying the Bentley truck. But the reason I would also go with the MDX is because of Honda reliability and Honda’s power train and drive train. Honda and Acura with more experience in the game know what they’re doing with they’re vehicles. Lemme know if you disagree, and I’m sure there’s gonna be a lot of em
I agree on all three points. If they put the Genesis logo in the center of the grill, it would help break up the expanse of chrome. The steering wheel is embarrassingly ugly, and a 2.5L turbo 4-cylinder is a dealbreaker in a car of this size and weight. The lack of a touch screen and the way Acura divides up desirable options between trim levels are the only real negatives for the MDX.
Kevin Miller they tested the 4-cylinder Genesis gv80 the six cylinder gets 375 horsepower and 391 lb of torque Honda's reliability is not what it once was and Genesis backs up their vehicle when an incredible warranty just my opinion you pick whatever you want sir enjoy your choice
@@flar5022 All fair points, thanks. At the time of my comment, I wasn't aware of the available six. That changes the game, especially when it's not really that much more expensive. For me, though, I can't get past the styling. I saw one on the road a few days ago, and it just looks so goofy. I don't care for the tail lights or headlights and that grill looks even worse in person that it does in pictures and videos. Plus, if you're from a state like mine that requires a front license plate, there's no place to put it. The one I saw had the plate hanging below the grill nearly dragging on the ground. I’m so annoyed by these reviews comparing the MDX to non third row vehicles. Most people are picking the MDX specifically because of the third row and wouldn’t even be considering cars that don’t have third rows 🙄
I picked the MDX because of its sporty handling with sh-awd, the extra room in the hatch, +200,000 miles of reliability, and don't have much need for the 3rd row. The 3rd row for any vehicle in the MDX class is too small for anything; but, pre-teens.
You do realize the Genesis lineup only consisted of maybe 2 vehicles up until 2019, right? So not really comparable as Genesis is a really new company compared to a brand that has a long history with loyal customers. It’s not shocking or news that the MDX outsells Genesis.

I tried to lease the GV80 in December. No dealership where I live or close to where I live was discounting the car and even marking it up severely due to the high demand. The best they can do is the MSRP and thats if you reserved the vehicle. Also with such a high money factor, the lease for the new Genesis is EXPENSIVE. Ive leased over 12 cars in my life and always look for the best deal until exhaustion, so trust me, this car will not be cheap if you intend to lease. Just food for thought when making your decision.
I'll take the Acura hands down. Very modern looking and techy I love it. The Genesis I cant do that grill and too much chrome just not my taste but the interior is damm nice I must say.
I choose the GV80 2.5T AWD basically because of the driving feel that seemed similar to my earlier BMW X5. In addition the GV80 offered more choice with color matches for exterior/interior combinations. Price in Canada was some $5,000 less for the GV 80 similarly equipped.
stay away from genesis, both the engine choices are plagued with known design flaws, especially the 2.5T, the early hyundai applications in Korea are already suffering from carbon buildup, cylinder knock and oil burn issues. KIA/hyundai historically made unreliable problematic engines and continue to do so. Please do not be fooled by the shiny shell of their new designs.
We researched every midsize SUV available and decided to purchase the GV80 Prestige edition on January 5, 2021. We are very comfortable with our choice. We have owned many SUV's over the years. This one is the best ever, by far.
There is a 3rd row GV80 but the price go higher into the 67k. So MDX is a better choice for a family especially if you need the occasional third row for the grandparents or friends
Exactly many people wouldn’t like the lights and the shape of the genesis snd prefer the mxd but many would like a sharper light so it’s only preference
No comparison. GV has the heart to create a fabulous product. MDX is good, especially their HD-awd, but that’s it. No other features really standout. It’s a pity to me that the Korean may not be very smart in pricing
Great review and all, but if your going to compare the two, make sure you get BOTH top trims or BOTH bottoms trims. You got the second bottom trim for the gv80 yet the top trim for the MDX the gv80 would’ve smoked the mdx if you had the comparison trim level.
The top trim MDX is the Type-S that’s why he states the advance is the most expensive until the type-s comes out in summer, which will be matched against the gv80 prestige.
They are comparing it by pricing or at least close. The top trim gv80 will be in the $70,000 and will lose to the MDX in this comparison. As far as speed, we'll have to wait until the top trim MDX Type-S come out first to have a more fair comparison.
Listen though, watch a review/comparison where people don’t just cruise around but actually push the cars/drive them a bit then there is a huge difference- you will not believe how we’ll the MDX drives/handles- and how well the engine sounds when it’s being driven aggressively. This may not be important to the average SUV driver- but if it is, the MDX is the easy choice- it really does drive like a well sorted sports sedan- it’s really quite incredible.
The MDX in Canada starts at $58480 and tops out at only $69480 including Freight and PDI making it significantly less expensive than the GV80. from the complete digital dash to the SHAWD system the MDX is definitely more vehicle and will likely maintain its value better in the long term.

Both of these were a bit too small for us. But if I would of picked one I would of picked the Acura hands down!

Drove every luxury SUV sold in America. I live in Hoover, Alabama and drove the GV80 and yes it does have many bells and you know what, but Genesis is not proven to have the long term quality that Honda/Acura has and the MDX with over one million made, great on safety five star and talk to past owners and they say MDX hands down. I also found the lane assist feature on the Genesis much to aggressive when it sees the white lines with a very strong pulling at the wheel, not so with the lane assist on the MDX, very subtle yet compliant. The radar on the adaptive cruse control was not mentioned and I too drove both and the Hoover Genesis had an $8,000+ upcharge for this same model shown on the GV80, even same color too! They need to get this model off the ground before over pricing that much. Also, Acura like most all luxury dealers have their own dealerships not shared with the lower end models and there is a better treatment in this area for sure. The third row is for sure just fine and most suitable for average people, but like most I will keep it down loving the huge storage area with the third row down. The MDX also has a very interesting hidden storage area where you can put at least 40 grocery bags without need for containment or moving around while moving. Side area storage too. I watched at least the 20 top car reviewers on RUclips and all seemed to be blown away with the total inside and out remodel of the 2022 Acura MDX, and most were actually "giddy with excitement" with only a few reservations, the touch pad, (after just four days it is a breeze), and some want more and more power, (all car reviewers always want more and more power), well this fall the S-Sport model comes out with 355 pony's under the hood, so that should make even them most happy! Believe me this 3.5 big asperated six does not need turbo and turbo's have had there problems, just something else to go wrong. This engine has been around for years and has proven that it is tried and proven and perfect combination with the new in house 10 speed, not so with that four turbo charged engine in the Genesis. I got the Pearl Red and you need Sun glasses when you look at it! I was close to buying the BMW X5 but they have had issues with parts that cost as much as a second car and Scotty Kilmer can tell you much more about the the difference between German long term quality and Japanese long term quality, much like Consumer Reports three year ratings with number one being Mazda, Lexus, Toyota and then Buick, with the Germans way down the list. Honda and Acura are making some really great vehicles, I will drive this for three years and I just hope to out live five more cars at the three year/36,000 mile standard warranty's. Next time I expect the Lexus RX will be bigger with a usable third row, and perhaps a PHEV that gets 50 miles on a charge, allowing most Americans to drive 80% on just EV and not have driver anxiety either. Just hoping, as Lexus will also turn heads again by say 2023. I will be looking and please get those safe, light, fast charging and 500+ miles on a charge solid state batteries on the market.
Why can't we all just get along and appreciate both of these vehicles for what they have to offer! They're both excellent in my book. There's definitely more money and extra effort behind the development of the Genesis, but this new MDX is also a good product for what it is and the best MDX to date! However, the GV80 is a true Korean product (fully built in South Korea) vs. the Acura which is a pretend Japanese product (built in USA). I'd pick the Genesis simply because it's so unexpected. Who would've thought Hyundai would get this good in such a short amount of time. Honda, on the other hand, had all the time, money, and potential in the world to come up with a vehicle as good, if not better than the GV80. Yet, they decided to take the cheap route for nearly two decades and build mediocre vehicles up until last year. This new MDX, as well as the new TLX are a response to increased competition from Korea. Def. a step in the right direction for Honda, but it wouldn't have happened without the unrelenting competition coming from Hyundai/Kia.

Acura MDX is one of the least reliable vehicles on the market.
Good choice .. U used your brain well 👍
Genesis is is getting sued due to GV having safety flaws. Hyundai will be Hyundai
I think mdx is better than GV80 mdx have more safety fitures. And mdx have really nice acc that can't be matched on GV80
I don’t know about matte paint but it will have air suspension.

I like the looks of the MDX more but we’re waiting to see how the Type S is going to be before we make the purchase.
Well.. that might be because the guy who designed the bently designed the genesis lineup.
Great review as always guys, if I had to chose I will go with the Acura hands down.
I was ready to buy a GV-80. Super Great Looks! No 3rd row except the top of the top of the line with all wheel drive. I'm getting the Acura!
The top of the line doesn’t have a 3rd row. It come with the advanced+ trim. So get the gv80. That one is 65,000
Genesis all the way
Why can't we all just get along and appreciate both of these vehicles for what they have to offer!
Genesis on the come up, give them 5 or 6 years and they’ll be on the same line as mercedes/audi/bmw imo
They won’t even exist
Lmao no
GV80 all day !!!!
MDX feels premium Honda whereas GV80 feels budget Bentley so...
Im a driver, shawd & great sound all i need. Mdx all day
The genesis awd system is just as great, the genesis has more features and more luxury, and a great sound system.
@Leon Baptiste The ACURA LOOKS LIKE A MAZDA. Hyundai/Kia motor group is the third-largest car manufacturer in the world. with honda not being the fourth, the fifth, the sixth but the 7th largest car manufacturer in the world. the Hyundai motor group builds beautiful and reliable automobiles. they have world-class automotive designers. designers honda /Acura wish they had. the genesis gv80 is a world-class luxury SUV. it even goes head to head with the Bentley bentayga which is doubled its price which both were designed by the same designer Sangyup Lee. and it attracts Bentley bentayga buyers for half the price. the Acura simply just comes short when compared to the gv80. the gv80 competes with cars higher than the MDX. the Acura MDX is a great luxury SUV too. They Acura Builts Beautiful Cars too. the GENESIS Gv80 is a better-built luxury machine. in terms of design, luxury, reliability, and much more. I Admit Hyundai/Kia Motorgroup had a rough start in the Automotive world when they first started. But they (Hyundai /Kia Motor group) have turned that around into a Huge Success. People need to stop living in the Past. The Hyundai/Kia Motor group has not only built their reputation as a reliable Automobile Company. They (Hyundai/Kia Motorgoup)have world Class Designers like Luc Donckerwolke, the man who designed the Lamborghini Gallardo, and the 2013 Bentley flying spur. and Sangyup Lee. who was a Bentley Exterior Design Director who designed the bentayga. Genesis Builts Beautiful World Class Luxury machines, with Reliability and Design. Forgive me if i offend you. I thank you for reading my comment.
This is easy! GV80.
Acura has much better value as it gets older so cost of ownership offsets the initial price. Turbo charged 4 cylinder vehicles also might present more issues down the road plus here in Arizona they make too much heat which in other stares is not an issue.
