My parents bought a new MDX in 2004. They kept it till 2019 and bought a used 2016 Lexus which they still have, and both didn't have a tremendous amount of problems, just the usual oil changes and the like. This is why if you don't want a lease payment or waste money on expensive repair bills, Japanese cars, though they aren't the most graceful and don't have as much tech, are the best choices for reliable cars
Was looking to get the MDX Type S but decided to save $20k and go with the best handling and one of the most practical and comfortable pickup trucks in America, the Honda Ridgeline.
I came very close to buying a 2022 MDX with Tech Pkg. I used to drive a 2013 MDX. But I am also a hug fan of Mazda, and I had to go back and watch all of Alex's video on the CX-9. I too can't figure out why the CX-9 doesn't sell better in the US. I test drove both. I have to say that the Mazda handled better, felt more quiet, more smooth, and yes, even more powerful than the MDX. I don't know how Mazda achieved so much torque with that Skyactiv 2.5L turbo. The MDX is a bit wider, and feels slightly roomier than the CX-9, but the overall cargo space and leg/head space are so close, it seems negligible. So I chose a 2021 CX-9 grand touring. It has nearly every luxury feature you could want in a mid size CUV. HUD, ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, surround view cameras, etc. The MDX doesn't offer ventilated seats, a surround camera, or a HUD unless you go up to the A-spec or Advance trims. Those trims are >$60k. My CX-9 was $46k. I think its a no brainer. CX-9 is a far better value. Just my personal opinion.
My point was that I don’t think the MDX is targeted at luxury buyers either. They position it slightly below the Lexus, Lincoln, European counterparts. So if Mazda is trying to position itself as a premium brand, and Acura is positioning the MDX below the Other luxury options, it only makes sense to me to compare them head to head. But you’re not wrong.
@@johnatkins6587 but the MDX is more expensive than an RX and cost as much as an Audi does. It’s just cheaper than BMW and Mercedes. It’s in line with the rest though.

Alex, thanks for pointing out the front double wishbone suspension enhancement. Double wishbone is definitely the better suspension setup than McPherson - yes, there are high-end vehicles that can get better performance metrics that uses McPherson even within the Honda/Acura line up compared to it's predecessors that used double wishbone (e.g. Integra vs. RSX) - but you can tell that the car with double wishbone feel more planted and confident in variety of road conditions and situations. This is why I keep several older Honda/Acura's for spirited driving (S2000 and 1st gen TSX).
@@mrsj1417 I disagree - Porsche's have other components that compensates or work together with their suspension setup that is unrealistic to implement (due to cost) on more affordable cars. Honda chose to spend it on double wishbone setup.
@Paul Klepinger According to Motor Trend there are "floor-mounted air vents..only Advance trim has rear USB ports". Not standard adjustable vents, but air is getting back there.
6:35 The 2nd gen Kluger in Australia (and Highlander in US?) had the same 2nd row removable middle-seat feature starting 2008. Practical, so I don't know why it was discontinued.
The exterior styling is very good. No awkward angles. The interior, while roomy, is the weakest part. Piano black cannot go away quickly enough. The angles on the door cards look strange. I think I can get used to the touchpad, but there is a learning curve. The V6-only powertrain is the right call too. I can’t wait to try it with the turbo. And thank goodness for the double wishbone suspension and SH-AWD. It’s very good overall.
People are simply tired of German cars - high priced, poor residuals, often unreliable and ridiculously expensive to own off warranty. MDX offers most of the same performance at a reduced price in a well built, reliable and high quality vehicle.

Hi Alex, when you are making the size comparison between vehicles, can you please include the vehicle’s turning circle or turning radius? For some of us who live in urban settings, with tight underground garages, etc., this information would be really helpful. For example, the 2022 MDX looks like a great vehicle. But it’s turning circle of 40.5 feet probably makes it less desirable for urban dwellers. But a potential buyer might not even know this until too late. This happened to me with a 2011 Chevy Malibu. Great car, but horrible to park with its land yacht turning circle. Ever since then I always check this little piece of information. Thanks
Great review! You do a fantastic job covering every detail…..did you ever find that key after you threw it out the back???? LOL - keep these great reviews coming. Thx!!
I was in the market last week looking for a mid size luxury suv. I chose Volvo XC90 T8 Hybrid Expression over Acura MDX w/advance package as I got better pricing for Volvo XC90.
Acura in general does the heavy dealer discounts, so if you are not in a hurry I would wait. Not a great comparison, but outgoing 2020 MDX were going low as $35k few months back.
Acura's Sport Hybrid (MDX, RLX) with SH-AWD is a real gem to have. Unfortunately, Acura just can't bring down its production cost and remain competitive.
That's why I like Acura they are not following the trend. I don't care if the infotainment system is not touch screen. Acura wants to keep the originality of its products. In the world of touch screens the screen stays covered in fingerprints and a lot of people love to eat and drive.
@@mrsj1417 unfortunately stupid is in the next lane. I have the idrive and touchscreen and there are occasions where touchscreen is more efficient and safe.
No kidding. The third row in that is useless beyond human comprehension Alex wouldn’t even recommend the RX even if the third row was spacious because it’s not exciting enough to him. Not dynamic not polished not fast enough, not sporty enough etc.
Great review as always….Having owned 2 MDXs, I’ll never own another…the powertrain is PHENOMENAL as is the SH AWD, and for the price/luxury, you cannot find an equal, especially if you want an emergency 3rd row. HOWEVER, Acura’s infotainment systems blow, period…this one is no different. You don’t really notice it until about after 2-3 months of ownership; it’s death by 1,000 papercuts. Unintuitive, cumbersome, and some things just don’t make any sense (e.g., why such a HUGE mode button? Most will set it and forget it). Basic tasks that should be a button are buried in menus where you’d never think to look for them. It’s a common issue up and down the Honda/Acura lineup…so unfortunate, because it looks great and drives great. Be forewarned - caveat emptor! All that said, Apple CarPlay does fix some of that, but not all of it. I’d get it over a Lexus as their infotainment system is no better, but it drives much worse and isn’t as fun to drive. QX60 might be a better deal…Volvo is a better car in every way, but for more $$$$$. Pass on the BMW…owned one…you can get one fairly close in price, but if you want what BMW is made for, you need to pay up and get the upper level trims….
Good thing about this model year is that the car can connect to wifi and update on the fly. They can pretty much change/update anything software related including the infotainment cluster in the future. Hopefully their IT department does a good job down the line.
@@HieuPham0804 That’s a great thought, but I don’t see that happening. Honda/Acura ability to make a competent infotainment system is poor at best. I don’t see them getting it fixed any time soon, unless they re-do all their menus, get rid of that stupid track pad (which, by the way, works differently if you are using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto vs. the Acura screens), and make it a touch screen…can’t do most of that OTA…too bad, it’s such a great vehicle otherwise….
I know this is technically in the “luxury” segment, but high end “non-luxury” crossovers are also competitors to this. We cross-shopped this new MDX with a high-end Telluride to replace our 2016 MDX…and even though I tend to like Acura, there’s virtually nothing the MDX is better at than the Telluride if you’re looking for a $50k-ish near-luxury vehicle. If you want better handling around corners, yeah, get the MDX. But if you want literally anything else out of your 3 row crossover - like spaciousness, a third row that normal-sized human beings with legs can sit in, an infotainment interface that won’t piss you (or your passengers) off - the Telluride wins hands down. And it will cost you less. We wound up trading our ‘16 MDX for a ‘21 Telluride SX-Prestige.
@@Phobos123 But what's the distinction? Have you been in a Telluride? Because if you compare the MDX and Telluride interiors, it's a meaningless label. If the Acura is considered a "luxury" vehicle, and the Telluride isn't...then I don't really know what the distinction is to make something a luxury vehicle. The Telluride (in SX Prestige trim, which has Nappa leather and suede headliner) definitely has a nicer interior than our 2016 MDX, and in my judgement it's on par with the 2021 MDX, or near as makes no difference. It's quieter than our 2016 MDX, it rides more comfortably than the '16 or '21 MDX. It has acoustic glass, nice leather, automatic everything (headlights, wipers, three zone climate), a HUD, heated/ventilated seats in both the first AND second rows, headed steering wheel, customizable lighting, etc etc etc. It is built solidly and feels luxurious to drive. It near as makes no difference has the same feature set as an MDX -- the only feature I could find on the MDX that wasn't on the Telluride is a power adjustable steering column. They have basically the same size engine and power. So...calling the MDX a luxury vehicle but saying the Telluride isn't a luxury vehicle is, I think, a distinction without a difference.

Hi Alex - This is a great review. A very comprehensive review. Thank you. I do have a question - I have heard that MDX has some sort of Brake By Wire system. how does that work? what happens if the battery dies ?
As always, awesome review. Thank you. On a lighter note, I noticed you labeled the 3rd row as naughty child and mother in-law, making it a time-out bench. My question: Is “naughty mother in-law” a redundancy?
@@fcex558 Easy. People will buy SUVs of any kind, so this will sell fine. Personally I'd buy a CX-9, Palisade as mentioned, or Telluride for thousands less and get a better vehicle. The TLX got good reviews but people don't want sedans anymore.
The new 2022 QX60 is a much more attractive and elegant car inside and out.The drivetrain of the MDX is a bit better but otherwise the QX60 wins everywhere else, IMO.
I would argue the Genesis GV80 out does everything this MDX does and has much nicer interior than the piano black Acura specialty. I know you don't like to mention Genesis when reviewing other luxury vehicles but its the elephant in the room.
I hope the 22 MDX id a lot better than last . Just moved to loaded up Ram 1500 and it’s way above . RAM More quiet , faster , family friendly, better seats , more cargo room , far superior infotainment 😃 but no 3 rd row.
Alex did mention the MDX is easy to park. How easy is it to park the RAM? I've looked at RAM 1500 and like it but I do worry about parking. Seems parking spots are getting smaller these days. And people are definitely less considerate and courteous in regards to watching out not to ding your ride.
@@gestebu the new MDX has removable center seat in second row , nice feature families . RAM is much wider and taller but not hard to park with crew 5 ft bed . It’s no compact car 😆 and I don’t mind parking further out lots . Can’t be beat on highway and the MDX was nice too if your in city
The outside look and the overall car behaviour reminds me of Mazda CX-9. Same long hood, very much similar side view look, same front loaded weight distribution and, of course, driving and handling experience. Even the cabin seating and noise dampening is the same. Very similar!
I have a 2019 MDX Advance, a very good car. The infotainment , split screen is dated, but the new one takes care of that !!! Except for that Blasted Touch Pad . It was the primary reason for my to select the 2019 MDX over the 2019 RDX. Immediately after the test drive (the RDX advance is mover , great ride, and more or less a perfect size for me without little kids as a 69 YO ), BUT that Touch Pad Turned Me Off so much (and it was actually a few bucks more per month because it was brand new model), I moved on to the MDX. I looking forward to a 2022 Test drive (hopefully as a Loaner for a day or 2 to "really" see if I can live with that Touch Pad), with the new 10 speed AT. My MDX does have a slight hesitation when pressing down on the gas pedal. But I learned something on the web about all these newer CPU controlled cars. They all (my Infinitis included), "learn" your driving habits and applies that habit to the way the car drives. You can reset that in the following manner and it does work: While in Park, hit the power on button 2X Without stepping on the brake (otherwise the car will start), press down on the accelerator for 30 seconds . The release, and start the car normally, You will feel (at least I do), the car reacts with more response. As a Blog Poster said, after doing that, drive the car like a Banshee - hard accelerations for a few miles. It Relearns the new way of driving for awhile.
The relationship with TLX further makes TLX rear seats a joke. It could have had 5-series leg room but ends up more cramped than 3-series! Thankfully they didn’t make that leg room happen in this MDX.
@@bikingmoments Luxury cars are always slower at a certain price point. It's a function of where the money was spent and weight added for so called luxury features.
Very few people are actually buying the RXL. the RX has always dominated the sales in this segment hitting up to 11k units per month even before the RXL. The MDX has never hit above 9k units
can you compare this and the telluride. Telluride is theoretically cheaper than MDX, but if we choose SX Night Fall and MDX Technology, they're both very close.
The Telluride is closer to the Pilot because both lean more to the "U" in SUV. The MDX learns more towards the "S" in SUV. The MDX will impress you if you need handling closer to a CUV/Sport wagon compared to if you need minivan like space/features/utility.
Alex, your review convinced me to pony up an additional 7K and get the Advance version instead... it better be worth it!!!! Just kidding, terrific review...
RX-L was made cuz they needed third row, but didn't want to spend money to properly R&D. MDX is way better.. I wish they had hybrid, I would definitely buy one.
So this wouldn't compete with Palisades/Telluride? The cargo area is what? 2 cu. ft smaller than those?? I'm really loving the practicality of that capt chair/bench in one feature. I'm shopping those with the Toyota Highlander Hybrid
At 18:49 you incorrectly mention adaptive suspension. Adaptive suspension will not come until the Type S. Are you saying you noticed suspension changes in the different drive modes? Strange.
Lexus was actually one of the first to have touchscreens. I owned a 2003 LS and 2006 RX with touchscreens. They discontinued touchscreens for a bit due to complaints of the screen being fingerprint magnets.
Acura should just screw it, drop in the NSX powertrain in the MDX, re work all the suspension and breaks add sport seats and remove the 3rd row and call it MDX type R. It would be a Cayeene turbo, X5M and Range Rover SVR fighter. It would probably sell really well and absolutely ruin the type R history but at this point who cares.
$60K+ for an MDX is too rich for my blood. I had the 1st Gen MDX, which was a ground-breaking SUV. I liked the 2nd Gen very much. The generations that came after especially ones that came with the lame 9-sp ZF trannies made the MDX much less compelling.
I like fact that the 3rd row seating area is called the mother-in-law row, lol. I think this is either the second or third time I heard Alex said that in his videos. Other You Tube reviewers would call that area the "penalty box". Overall this new generation Acura MDX is good. It's above few of the competitors and under few of them. One thing for certain it beats the direct competitor which is the third row seating Lexus RX 350. The correct name description for the third row seating RX is the RX 350L or RX 450L, not RXL like what was mentioned in this video couple times. As for the Acura MDX you can get more features for less money. That's great! The perfotnance Type S trim for the MDX should be here either sometime later this month or early next month.

Of course the Mazda is a better value because it’s not a luxury car. You can get any loaded economy car and it would cost you less than a luxury car.
The Mazda is a better vehicle than the MDX. Acura seems to be trying way too hard with the sport mode, etc.
@@mrsj1417 Acura has always been based on performance and sport since they were first introduced. They aren’t trying to hard to do anything. They are actually going back to their roots.
Yea I'm pretty sure if Porsche uses struts then you don't need DWB in an Acura.
@@mrsj1417 Porsche also uses double wishbone

The interior, while roomy, is the weakest part. Piano black cannot go away quickly enough. The angles on the door cards look strange. I think I can get used to the touchpad, but there is a learning curve.

Thanks

Many Acura dealers do not budge on pricing because they don’t need to. They cannot keep inventory in stock because it’s selling so well.

Alex really beat the crap out of the RX in this video.
No kidding. The third row in that is useless beyond human comprehension
Alex wouldn’t even recommend the RX even if the third row was spacious because it’s not exciting enough to him. Not dynamic not polished not fast enough, not sporty enough etc.

Acura dropped the ball by not making the infotainment system a touch screen. Basically every auto makers have switched to that, including Lexus
I loled at "Mother-in-law row" 😂😂😂

what did he mean by that
Great review as always….Having owned 2 MDXs, I’ll never own another…the powertrain is PHENOMENAL as is the SH AWD, and for the price/luxury, you cannot find an equal, especially if you want an emergency 3rd row.
One of the many reasons Consumer Reports hasn't recommended the MDX and the new 2022 MDX is not recommended by Consumer Reports.
Big mistake not having a touchscreen infotainment. Track pad should be rotary dial via Audi or BMW.
Don't know what the Hell took Acura soooo long to get rid of that hideous beak grille. The one is NICE!
Just about to say this. Save money and get a Telluride that does most things better for way less.
I see, but Telluride is not a luxury vehicle. Why is everyone putting luxury and premium to every brand / model lol
