Is the MDX Type S Worth the Price? // Acura MDX Type S REVIEW

  • The Acura MDX Type S represents a solid upgrade to an all around good premium SUV, but... it comes at a fairly huge price. In a world of Kia Tellurides and recently redesigned Honda Pilots, can customers justify spending BMW X5. money for a model that starts just above the mainstream? The MDX Type S is certainly a more enthusiastic drive, but it's not quite enough to justify hiking the price by more than ten grand over fully loaded "regular" models. What do you think is the break point? Does the Acura MDX Type S offer enough to play in the same market at the BMW X5, Mercedes GLE, and Audi Q7? Why or why not? Let me know!

    We purchased a MDX Type S instead of a BMW or Volvo. We weren't Acura owners before but the equivalent SUVs from the other automakers were in the high 80s to mid 90s. Car prices were wild and rates were low when we got the Type S. I don't regret the Type S at all. If you have a kids and take long drives on highways it is hard to find a better value.

    I have one of these and here are my reasons why. First, Ive owned MDX's in the past and had great ownership experiences. Second, I wanted an SUV with air suspension, I need to take it down some rather infamously bad roads ( Motherlode Hill, Miller Fork Rd ) and at 9.4 inches of ground clearance in lift mode, its right up there with some much more capable off-road vehicles. This rules out the BMW with the exception of the X5 hybrid, which is very difficult to get right now unless you want to wait 6 months plus in my area. Cost of ownership bothers me with that version. Audi was an option, but all the ones with air suspension in my area were ~90k. Thirdly, I loved how it looks and drives. I got the blue/orchid combo and really love it. Its quite fun on twisty back roads, super plush in the city. I realize this does not have the 'status' or performance of a German, but I honestly dont care.

    I did look seriously into the 3.5L MDX but there’s not enough power so was hoping the type S would hit the sweet spot. At 72K and 355bhp, plus that track pad, it does not. I agree that 65K is the logical price point for this. Or at least just stick this engine in an A spec ditch the air suspension

    Great video, you have a new fan of your channel! I agree with all of your comments - if this car were priced in the mid 60k range it would be game over. I would also like to see how the air suspension holds up over time. We had a Lexus GX that never had an issue with air suspension, but we've had a Mercedes GLS where we're glad we got the 7 year / 100k mile warranty. This car has an in-between quality between the X5's and GLE's and the X7s and the GLS'. I think most people will probably end up just going German, as you said.

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  Год назад +1

      True, and they’ll do so for the perceived prestige rather than the long term reliability (which is probably better on the Acura). If they could offer the Type S at $69,999 I think just that subtle change would make it seem like a good value. There’s a LOT to love about it, but the $70k range starts to become more rarified air with a ton of alternative options. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻

    First time watching your channel. Great video! As someone who is 6’5”, it’s nice to see someone tall review automobiles. Also, I know the price is steep but it has some luxuries like massage seats and the upgraded 25 speaker ELS audio system that usually come in much more expensive models. I was curious what you thought about those features.

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  Год назад +1

      Thank you! The massage seats are great, but the ELS audio system can be had in lower trims. I think the air suspension is the main exclusive selling point over other MDX trim levels, and it DOES work: the ride and handling balance is quite good. However, since the powertrain isn’t insanely powerful, is that main upgrade worth the large price premium? I’m not sure that it is, but I’ve had several Type S owners tell me that I’m wrong 😜 Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻

    • @ubbadubba1
      @ubbadubba1 Год назад +1

      @@jax1079 Ya, that’s a fair point. I believe the ELS on the Type S has more speakers (25 vs 17) than the lower trims and more power but I’m not sure how big of a difference that it makes since the regular ELS system is already solid. I’m hoping a lot people don’t feel the Type S is worth the price and dealers start giving discounts 😀.

    The best thing in MDX are the SH AWD especially in snow mode as one of the best in the market and copied by the Germans later on when they debut it. The double wishbone suspension that adds performance and feels compared to other SUV’s and one best part you can feel on this SUV is even it was so large SUV when you drive it feels like a small SUV and you can toss around and feels good and stable.

    I’m comparing this with the Genesis GV80 3.5L prestige, same price, Acura is almost there, genesis has way less plastic, more wood, glass and metal from the glass gear shifter, metal buttons, and ample wood trim on the center console. Genesis 3D digital gauges are super crisp. Again for the same price you also get soft close doors, suede headliner, power rear sunshades, rear passenger heated/cooled and power rear seats Both have the ambient. Wish GV80 had MDX air suspension. MDX also has massage both front seats where the GV80 only has driver basic lumbar stretch massage which is not like a roller massage. It seems like the GV80 is pure luxury and MDX is pure sport, can make the decision hard, plus the GV80 3.5L prestige doesn’t have a 3rd row, can have 3rd row on lower trims. I still want both cars in the garage, 1 down 1 to go.
    Warranty also to take in consideration, genesis power train 10year 100k mile, Acura: 6yr 70k miles

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  Год назад +1

      I’d probably lean towards the GV80 myself. I’m not convinced that the suspension difference between the two would be all that noticeable from a seat of the pants perspective, and the GV does a better job feeling special inside. The MDX build quality is excellent, but it lacks a few of the GV’s wow factors. (Even though lots of that stuff is for show, at luxury prices I think consumers are entitled to a little show.) Acura loves to brag on the audio system, but again, I’m not convinced most normal humans will care where their podcasts are coming from. Tough call, but I think I’d pick the GV. I like more clean uncluttered lines. I am definitely in love with the left and right turn camera of the GV80...I have that in my Accord which I hate that they stopped including. Acura also has that history of reliability, which I am sure Genesis is working towards.

    I'm asking myself the same question about this Type S w/Advance package at $75k. I guess this is bigger than the X5 but smaller than the X7? And the price of this vs. the X5 is about equal the way I configure the BMW. So the X7 is way more. But I was kind of hoping for something in the 60k range - even the high 60k range. But to be fair, it has air suspension and massaging seats, and the front passenger gets the same seat as the driver. But the engine is turned the wrong way in the engine bay! So paying over 70k for a front wheel drive-based vehicle just rubs me wrong. So what will a Lexus TX (much larger) with the Hybrid Max powertrain cost? Probably in the same ballpark. I guess we'll see.

      I agree. I think a lot of people felt as if I was being overly harsh. I really like the Type S, and I’d love to see Acura move upmarket, but it just needs a few more tweaks to command $70k or more. My opinion: brake feel, 400+ hp, and upgraded infotainment and I’d totally be down with a $75k price tag.

    Good review. I agree with a lot, but also maybe disagree with some. Equally equipped, a German SUV is going to be 80-90K. the BMW X5, technically a 2 row, comparably trimmed out is $10K more. Mercedes would be even more. The audi doesn't even get cool until you spend close to $100K. You could get a Premier trim tahoe, like you said. But the quality and finish is kinda crap (saying that as someone that currently owns a Chevy). Plus that thing is a monster and not that fun to drive. The 6.2L V8 is an option but should be the standard in something that size. On the other end, I'd pay $20K more not to drive a telluride or highlander. Plus, like you mentioned, the model you tested was only $14K more than the A-spec. But $5K of that is the "advanced" package that brings different seats, heads up display, and a few other things (some of which should be standard at that price). Also, on the performance. I think the performance has gotten out of control. Most people can't use, shouldn't use, or don't know how to use something producing 600 HP. Although I wish the performance numbers were closer to 400 for HP and TQ, it has enough power to be fun and even a 41 year old accountant can fully put there foot into without fear of losing control.

      This is the way. And I think the dealer experience is rapidly improving. Kia knows what they have. They’re playing the long game. Poor dealer experiences are going to become less and less tolerable (at all levels) post pandemic. I’ve heard nothing but positives from most of the dealers in metro Atlanta (but admittedly a small sample size). Comparing them to Lexus (or Acura) will never be equal, but is it $20k deficient? Both are SUVs, and at the same price, consumers might consider prioritizing quite a bit more space in their SUV package over the ride/handling balance of the Type S.
