We just purchased the 2024 MDX A-Spec after owning and leasing 4 BMW's in a row. BMW increasing MSRP and post-warranty maintenance/repair caused us to consider other products. ACURA (As I pronounce "AHKUDA") is an excellent product and value. After warranty maintenance and repair costs are literally 1/3 of BMW. I want to own my car- not have my car own me 8 )

      Not more reliable
Bro-tranny failures, forward camera failures, rod bearing failures, bad radiator @ 70k miles, rust showing in the “fisheyes”
In the paint after 4.5 years. True sh*t vehicles leaning on past reliability claims, you know how god damn reliable that straight six turbo from the X5 is? Toyota begged BMW to use it in the lates version of their most iconic sports car- in fact BMW built the whole car for em! I used to be a Japanese car fan, & they used to reliably produce reliable cars- not so much the case these days. Things change- but bang for the buck? Go check out a Kia/hyundai- and unlike Honda OR BMW? they actually put their $$ where their mouth is w/ warranty coverage

I have my MDX now for 2 months and frankly there has been no issue with the touchpad. Not only is it easy to use, it is also functionally perfectly located. I feel like James T. Kirk on the bridge of the Enterprise as I lean back and work that touchpad to navigate the screen. Acura SHOULD have made it ALSO have a touchscreen function. It would be the smart business move so as not to alienate customers who feel that a touchscreen is evidence of a superior product. Acura needs to understand that there is a right brain left brain issue that is real, and some folks will simply not take the time to realize the simple functionally perfect nature of the touchpad. Even if it had a touchscreen I would be using the touchpad 80% of the time. I chose the MDX over the AUDI Q7 and BMW X5 for value reason. The initial costs puts them in pretty much the same price point, but I plan on keeping the MDX for more than 5 years. If I was going to lease a vehicle it would have been the Q7. While not as lurious looking on the exterior, Acura simply has a better reputation when it comes to maintenance costs when you look at life beyond warranty period. All are good vehicles. The one you get depends on your needs, and I am TOTALLY delighted with the MDX.

I have my MDX for almost a year now by next week. I traded in my ‘16 MDX for this one. This ‘22 is a big update. Was considering X5, Q7, XC90 and GLE and like you, and I was planning to keep an SUV upwards of 5 years also and Acura/Honda is known for reliability.
Acura could easily put minimum of 400hp on that type S but went conservative.
Performance and short term lease, I’ll go X5.

BMW gives you a control knob for those who don’t want to touch screen. Best of both worlds. It’s amazing.
Having spent time in both of these vehicles, the X5 puts a huge smile on my face. It’s a clean approach inside and makes it super relaxing. The MDX is too busy inside and claustrophobic.
X5 base B58 engine and trans are a true masterpiece. BMW’s best drivetrain. BMW also goes above that and give higher drivetrains for even more power as options.
It’s great to see all those Supras with B58 drivetrains running 7 and 8 seconds in 1/4 mile runs with bolts ons. Shows how extremely brutal these drivetrains are. Acura V6 is not even in the same league from an engineering standpoint.
The fastest NSX hasn’t even broken under 10 seconds in 1/4. That just shows how far BMW has come with technology, design, capabilities, and superior strength with all forged internals.

    • @Carlos1075
      @Carlos1075 Год назад +3

The “Oh Crap Handle” is the best feature on the BMWs. Man those engines are in a league of its own. I freaked my family out on a road test at the dealership and they loved it. One thing to note is that I am hearing the BMW had really stepped up
On their game and are even beating Hondas according to Consumer Reports. I couldn’t believe that BMW hold the third place in reliability. The BMW dealership told me that and I thought they were pulling my leg. Show enough they had magazines all over the dealership to prove to the customers his great the BMWs are now days. After I saw that I now believe it. Another thing to note when Honda and Toyota were getting popular back on the days those cars were not too reliable. My Toyota always had issues with over heating, Oil leaks and frankly the engine felt wreaks. However overtime it’s no secret Hondas and Toyotas have dominated the car market for many years. I think BMW and the Korean Car markers are the next to dominate the car market. I have 2017 Hyundai Sonata to get around the city and Buddy this car blows my mind how reliable it as been and has some nice power for that car segment. Right now I am in the market on buying a BMW X5 and this what brings me to watch this video. I too am a bit concern about the reliability of this brand since it’s known fue being a bad brand. One thing good that I like about BMW is that it comes with a 3 year Maintenance Warranty with would cost me around $3000 for a Mercedes Benz GLE 350. I too love the MDX and the RDX but the track pad approach has to go. They should be like Mercedes Benz where they get the user the option if they want to use the track pad, touchscreen or the steering wheel to control the infotainment system. I was also looking at the 2024 Mercedes Benz GLE 350 and I feel that the interior looks a lot better than the BMW X5 and the MDX but to think the engine for my liking felt not as responsive.

It's simple: The X5 is here for a good time, but not a long time.. and the MDX is here for a long time, but not a good time. In 2021, I tested the new MDX and the X5, and got the X5. The X5 engine is sublime, the drive is smooth comfort with air springs if I want to change it to sport. The X5 interior is so solid, and such high quality materials, and the infotainment is superb. Did I mention the engine sound? Just non stop smooth, effortless power. The X5 was head and shoulders above the MDX, it felt like it was not a fair comparison, pitting a premium with a mainstream against each other. All that said, I am thinking of trading the X5 in for a new MDX just to avoid future high maintenance and steep depreciation once the X5 warranty runs out. I am going to test drive the MDX and see how I feel about it, but found this review useful. The MDX doesn't excite but it also won't annoy, and at the end of the day a long term, reliable vehicle might fit the bill.

But if you take into consideration the air suspension and massaging seats for passenger and driver at around $75K your looking at at least $10-15K less than a similarly equipped X5 possibly more.
Either way with a little less power the MDX is a vehicle that you can drive well past 5 years without too many major costs. The X5 is a vehicle that after about 4 years or so of ownership can be very expensive to maintain. So if you lease the X5 might be the better option.

We leased the 2023 MDX A-Spec and there’s many things we love about it. I especially like the sharp design, amazing lighting from the headlights/fog lights, the ELS sound system is top notch, the touchpad doesn’t bother me, I’ve gotten used to it. The power from the V6 is plenty, even when carrying passengers and cargo. It is an extremely practical vehicle that should be reliable if we decide to stay with it past the lease period. However, Honda/Acura needs to improve some things, for example the third row lacks adequate HVAC and this is the main complain we have bc it renders that seat unusable (it gets too hot back there). Also, improve the backup camera resolution, especially at night the lack of quality shows. I’ve always complained about how thin Honda’s paint is, and we have a lot of rock chips already on the front bumper and hood from highway driving. Overall, the MDX is a great value over the German competition and hopefully it’ll get better with future updates.

Timing belt in Acura makes reliability a weak point. 2k service change at 100k or less. If it snaps, engine is gone.
B58 BMW is a true masterpiece. Toyota even put their badge on it wit Supra. Toyotas fastest Supra. These engines are handling some extreme HP bumps past 1200 HP.
I don’t see Acura anywhere near 500 HP is aftermarket, let alone 1200 plus HP on B58 tried and true bulletproof drivetrain.
J30/35 Honda/Acura engine is great, but not even in same league as B58.

Got my 2023 MDX in October 2022. Good driving car, very comfortable. Drove it from the East Coast to L.A. and back. 6 days of 14 hour drive give me a good sense of how the car operates. Driving Instruments and electronics not so good. Brand new SUV delivered with a 3 year old navigation. Ended up using Google maps as Android Car not very friendly to use and outdated. One finger navigation for screen use is most ridicules "invention". Good luck navigating the screen when in motion. Wireless voice commands totally unfriendly, You need to learn a new language to navigate . If you drive in a snow and ice, you will need to stop and clean hood logo (Radar) if you want to continue . Other than this there are several other issues. It would take to long to continue. No it is not in a class of BMW or Audi. Had previously BMW ,Audi and 2017 MDX.
O yes, If you need parts get in line for a long run. I'm still awaiting for " Rear lid molding" replacement ( almost 6 month)

These 2 don't compete imo. The MDX competes with the XT6, Q7, XC90, GV80, QX60, and now top-trims of the CX90 (luxury 3-row family SUVs) while the X5 competes with the Q8 and Cayenne (which are more expensive, sportier, and lack 3rd rows). The MDX is more family oriented while the X5 is more performance oriented though both are amazing options for luxury SUVs. The GLE is a great mix of both worlds from what I heard but it's also very unreliable.
