@@matthewp9015 in reality I like all types of cars, but these cars are just built so much better than other cars that's why I prefer them over let's say ze Germans.
Great review. My wife drives the previous generation and we love it. Something that is hard to explain and get emotional about is the reliability- push the button and it starts. The electronics no not have bugs, and the controls, switch levers and touch points hold up over years of family use. I think Honda/Acura will always be 1 step behind if the cutting edge in power output, newest tech, and automotive trends as a conscious trade out for nose to tail reliability.
I drive a 2011 MDX with SHAWD, no way would I trade my car over the newer generations. everything still works in my car, except the radio/CD player, the engine, transmission and the SHAWD work perfectly and never has the car had any issues in the first 105Kmiles of ownership. I dont think you can say the same about a MB, BMW or an Audi.
I think Acura was very smart going with the normally aspirated V6 instead of a turbo 4. Crossovers at this size with the turbo 4 (XC90, GLE350, and Q7 2.0t) tend to loose steam on the highway. Plus you are not going to get any savings at the pump compare to their 6 cylinder counterparts. In fact the GLE450 gets better gas mileage than the GLE350. This MDX represent Acura’s mantra since 1999, offering a lot of car for the money.
4 cylinder turbo is not cheaper to operate, still some what inefficient in respect to MPG, plus engines are somewhat noisy and when considering the turbo, those engines most likely will have to get more maintenance a lot sooner. I taka a V6 any day! not sure why manufacturers have added so many gears to an engine that can benefit from having no more than 6 gears. todays MDX has less power than the 2011 model and gas consumption is relatively about the same.
I really hope this is the start of a resurgence of great Honda/Acura cars. This engine is great and Acura has really stepped up their game, I am excited for the Type S motors too. I miss the good old days of Honda and Acura cars that were the hottest things in the streets.
Honestly their current cars are fine The civic Type R is pretty much the best Hot hatch available and the Accord 2.0t is a serious sleeper I have a civic hatchback with a 6 speed it’s the best daily car I’ve driven
No the engine is not fine. I have a 2011 with the same exact HP. Thats a SERIOUS issue for a car thats now 10 years newer. These things should be no less than 360 HP right now. I'll be holding out for the 2022 Infiniti QX60.

My 1999/2000 Acura RL just turned 300,000 KMS on the odometer last week. I can attest that Acura products, minus the corrosion of the body unfortunately, are rock solid and are made with good quality. Yes, they require regular maintenance like any other automobile, but you can rely on it if it is well maintained. Another great and honest review of the new Acrua MDX. The older previous year models are a great bargain if you can get one for about $45K CDN. This is a really nice Acura but I'm not fond of the gloss black surfaces in any automobile. Period. I hate to clean it and I hate even more getting it dirty.
Another great review guys. As someone in my twilight years and has owned many cars in my lifetime but who never owned a Honda product before, I'm now on my second RDX, this one with the V6 and I am now a believer.
I have owned more Honda's than I care to admit. 91-Accord, 87 and 2001 Civic, 89 Legend LS 2007 CRV & 2016 CRV and 2011 Acura MDX. I went the Nissan route in 2002 with the Maxima SE and in 2008 I went Mazda CX7, which was the worst car I ever owned from a brand new perspective. Honda & Acura products have been reliable and well built for the most part. All the honda Products surpassed 100K miles. Mazda lasted 50K miles before the engine blew up and the turbo went out-total flop. I am considering my next Acura product-having doubts about 4 cylinder engines with turbo.
I have always been a fan of Honda Products, owned Accord LX-I from 1987, butter smooth engine, great handling, pretty luxurious moonroof, al power options and great suspension. When Acura came out with Legend, I had a Legend LS 1987, awesome car finally a V6 with a lot of refinement. There after I drove a few accords, civic, CRV and MDX. Very reliable Honda products all of them.
I have always owned Japanese cars between Toyota, severally Hondas and Acuras and briefly i owned a Nissan. Never cared to own American cars😂. So welcome to JDM auto world
That snow segment is truly a gift, and huge addition to the depth of the review.. Let it snow.! We just had a big one in Illinois so I expect more of the snow course.
Props for the offroad test. Not a hardcore offroad test of course, but at least you took it off the asphalt. Most reviewers simply don't want to, or don't dare. Just re-affirms that this is the premium car review channel on RUclips for me currently.
Love your reviews especially when you put it on the rack and talk about engineering and build quality. Bought a 2024 MDX Advance two weeks ago and love the comfort in the seats and the ride. I’ve watched this twice to understand the engineering that went into the suspension. Had a 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5t Sport Advanced for 18 months traded it with 31k flawless miles. Got a 2023 Genesis G80 2.5t Sport Prestige and traded it after 8 months and 22k flawless miles for this MDX. So comfort matters with long days in the saddle but needed the size of an SUV otherwise my G80 is my favorite. My first Acura product had a BMW 2021 4 Series that was an electrical nightmare and traded for the GV70 after 7 months. I’m a huge fan of what Genesis is putting out there and really figured I’d be in a GV80 2.5t Prestige. Acura was right next to Genesis and the rep sold both but for shits and giggles I started with a test in the MDX. Then went over to Genesis and tested a gorgeous GV80, and I was wondering to myself why the seat is such a POS. When I got back I had to double check to see if the butt bladder was jacked up it was so awful. The tech is way better thought out in the Genesis products but every vehicle has misses and will live through the tech downgrade for these awesome seats and ride. This MDX totally caught me off guard and I’m loving what I read about the quality and reliability. Great job guys with your reviews I really enjoy them, you work well together.
Great review! Rdx, tlx and Mdx. All that is left she the new compact sedan. As a current ilx owner and someone who enjoys a smaller vehicle, I am truly excited for the new subcompact.
@@DodgerBlueRobert maybe you did not see the Acura product chart that was leaked some months ago. I have been driving acura's for many years, I follow every form there is and can tell you there is a new car coming that will replace the ilx. Whether it is a sub compact or compact, it is on the way late this year or early next.
Your video is getting better and better. Very professional, details oriented, and you kept that vehicle exceptionally clean even in the snow. Phenomenal!
I really appreciate the commentary and research of the mechanics of the vehicles you test, I'm sure to us gear heads its a welcome and what sets you guys apart from the average car reviewer. So I know Mark jokes that it going to bore us but I think it's their edge and my favorite segment.
Mark is one of the few auto-vloggers gutsy enough to make a video despite having an ingrown whisker that looks like he's growing a 3rd eye. And humble enough not to brag about how the additional eye is going to make him a better driver by eliminating the left side blind spot that us mortals have.
I just got this last week. The touch pad is easy even when you're driving. It's really smooth to drive and amazingly comfortable. Much better than the BMW i just traded in and rivals the comfortability of a couple Mercedes that i had.
I test drove an A-Spec today and the ride is really nice. No body lean and very stable yet very comfortable on the road through PA potholes and rough roads. That was impressive. I already know the engine and 10speed from my Odyssey, so nothing too exciting there, but that was the reason I would consider this car. It just works really well. The interior is not 58k worthy though. I was a little disappointed there. The second row is bad, I could barely fit a rear-facing car seat behind myself as driver. I’m 6’3” and have shorter legs, long torso. Backseat had to be pushed all the way to the back. However, it fit, so can’t complain I guess, but this a huge car that should offer more room. And the headroom in the 2nd row is bad. i wasn’t able to sit without tilting my head quite a bit. What’s up with that? I have no problems in my Outback or in my Odyssey. In general I didn’t feel a 58k vibe at all. Plastic lower speaker covers in the doors front and back are ridiculous at this price point, and so is the hard plastic in the door cupholders. Could have put some rubber in there so bottles don’t rattle. So driving experience is great, rest just mediocre. Sorry Acura, had high hopes for this one, but it doesn’t fit my perception of luxury.
I have both 2007 gen 2 with the older 300hp 3.7L and a newer gen 3 hybrid. SH-AWD is no joke-excellent. No, it’s not an X5, but my Acuras have also been dead reliable (unlike my friend’s brand new X5 that blew its rear differential) and $20,000 less money for 99% of the same good driving experience. Highly recommended.
You guys offer a top shelf car review. Love the complete systems description that I don't see elswhere. I have a 2019 MDX Advance and I'm at the halfway point of my 36 month lease (actuall 20 months in), and have stumbled on this new 2022 version. Really liking the improvements overall. Wish the i infotainment screen which is welcomed large one, was touch screen as well. At 69 yo, and test drove the 2019 RDX, which has the new Acura Touchpad , that touchpad was a turnoff to me. And it should be pointed out that the 2019 MDX was a better value . Agreed to the statements, that MDX is a little boring with aged dual screens, and in the way it drives. My Advance package included 45 ratio tires. This 2022 has 50 ratio tires. It does make a difference that I could feel in Sport suspension and drive modes. The loaner that I drove a few months ago, with 50 ratio tires on 20 inch wheels DID make a difference that i could feel. If i dont upgrade to the 2022 model ( I would consider that with a upgrade lease program ?), i will change the tires on my 2019 which has 20 inch wheels to 50 ratio tires. Thats my Two cents . Great work guys.
Just bought one today. It came down to the GV80 and this. The GV80 is more upscale feeling and felt more special. It also felt like it was going to be not just more expensive up front, but long term. I test drove the MDX about two weeks ago and hated the light steering and the gutless lack of torque. Here's the thing...I'm not going to wring the shit out of a car that I may not buy so I didn't rev it out, but it was also in comfort mode which overboosts the steering to the point that you can't even feel it and eliminated any kind of throttle response. You put the thing in normal and it feels fine, you put in sport mode and it feels alright. The stereo was another near miss....the one that I test drove had some knucklehead crank the bass all the way up to the point that it sounded like shit.....at non-dumbass settings it's really nice. It's very clean. The real sticking point was the stupid touchpad thing. I like to touch what I see on the screen, but I went back to the dealer and basically said "let me just sit in the damn thing and see if I can get over it". About 5 minutes of messing around with it I felt good enough to put it back on the list and obviously good enough to buy it. The selling points are that I think that it strikes a good balance between being attractive without being garish or f'ing stupid looking (Hilander). The steering is so responsive and for an SUV it has very little body roll (at least that I could feel). You point it and you are going there. It also has a very good turning radius for U-turns and stuff. The ride is good; it's not as well damped as a Lincoln, but I don't feel like i'm floating 2 feet above the road either. The HUD is nice and bright and I can see it with sunglasses on. It drives smaller than it is. The V6 is smooth and even if I don't have that ridiculous low end torque it's still a mid 6 second 0-60 SUV and it's going to be damn near bulletproof. An oil change is going to be priced at near human prices (i'm over spending $400-700 every time I go to get an A or B service on the European crap). 3rd row is a joke just like damn near everything out there save for perhaps the Telluride or Pallasade....which by the way with the current f'ing mess in the industry are marked up about $10K over MSRP locally.....my local Acura dealer didn't screw around even though the Advanced package is flying off the showroom floors. We literally got a 2022 MDX for less than a fully loaded Kia would have cost....nothing wrong with Kia...I own a Stinger GT2 and LOVE it, but you put this side by side with the Kia and for the same price out the door it's a no-brainer.
If I was looking to own it for 2-4 years or sell before warranty ends I would take the Kia but after warranty definitely the mdx, I love both they have their pros and cons
I like the Genesis but as 2nd gen owner, I questioned their reliability. My 2011 MDX with SH-AWD has been a blast to drive. 105k miles later, i still love it. As a family hauler, vacation car I can say Acura delivered on everything they say about the handling of such a heavy SUV. My car has been driven at 105 MPH and the feel is Amazing, its no soorts car but it handles very well and it sounds good with the 3.7 v6. I am ready for a test drive for a 2024 model, as i would not consider the German SUV counterparts on price and reliability alone.
Lucky you. I have a mdx with 1800 miles and a constant transmission gear whine. Acura does not know how to fix. Read other forums and see how many complaints. Acura sucks!
My decision on next car is getting more difficult now for daily family vehichle. Its between this with tech pkg, CX-9, or Highlander platinum. All the reviews have been positive but i am wondering about predicted reliability and if any past issues such as stalling engine or transmission issues have been remediated.
LOVE your reviews but like every other reviewer, you don't spend any time telling us about the front passenger seat. Same controls as the drivers? Lumbar support? It's the first question the spouse asks...Does the front passenger seat have lumbar support? I don't know, NO ONE ever says!?! At 3:10 you show a shot of the drivers seat controls, spend all kinds of time on the middle row and back seat, 5 minutes on driving impressions (from the drivers seat) but zero time on the front passenger seat. I understand, no other reviewer does either but do you think you could be the first? You guys are awesome!
My parents have owned/leased MDX cars for the last +20 years. Good, reliable engineering; the exterior design has been hit-and-miss; and I agree that the current version is a little bit sleepy when it comes to driving excitement. The 2022 may be their last as they are in their late 70s, so it looks like it continues to be a good choice.
One thing that I keep wishing that all manufacturers of large SUV's would do is to offer a third row delete option with available captains chairs in the second row. It would be nice to be able to have the extra room of a large SUV but without the peanut gallery seats (especially if you would never use them anyway). An added benefit: Since the load floor would be at the level of where the third row seats would normally be when folded, there would be a lot of extra room for storage under that floor.
my family has owned a 2011 for years now. I still love it, the V6 is awesome and its interior is honestly nicer than the 2019 Grand Cherokee we just got (which I have not been impressed by).
Beautiful car, and really love the interior design. Wish they would bring this to the RDX, will probably take a few years. Also how is this channel not at a million subscribers yet?! Blows my mind everytime.
Sharp is such a great word for this new MDX. When you called the Telluride a sofa on wheels, even the design looks like that, soft and bubbly compared to the aggressive lines of the MDX.
The fact that certain car reviewers have double the amount of subs as you (and more) is exactly why the industry is going the way it is. You ladies are seriously underrated
I always said that car came out in the wrong time cause clearly look at the Germans making coupe like suvs…the ZDX especially aged way better than the German counter parts
I love it how modern Acura marketing is still referring back to the original NSX and the ITR. Yo Acura, we remember when you used to make cars with soul too. Stop twisting the knife.
I over the past six months have driven every luxury SUV and nothing comes close to the MDX, 2022 for space, responsiveness, price to value, and for sure terrific looks inside and out. I just bought my Red Pearl MDX and will pick it up Monday. I was most disappointed in almost every Mercedes, Audi and even the Volvo line, as they are just too much in love with their high price to value relationship with current cars. Lexus, has been so conservative that they hold back too and just now this fall may have their NX 450h and three other options, but for them and the others I mentioned you will not even find much on the lots now, because of the micro-chip shortage, battery shortages, plants shut down, etc., etc. Product is coming in nationwide very slowly. However, Acura's MDX made in their Ohio plant, (as the Alabama plant in Lincoln) is busy making others) both still seem to be pushing out product, with the exception of the new coming change in the Honda Pilot I drove two days ago and the new change seems to be coming for design change maybe by end of year, if parts alliance holds up. So many ifs! I was most impressed with my new 2022, MDX and just hope I feel that way in a few years. I plan on buying my wife a new car soon, and I will be trading each year until I die now, every three years or 36.000 miles, as so many changes are taking place over the next 15 years with EV's, PHEV's and God knows what else will be born! Not interested in having driver anxiety over the next few years with a EV traveling across the third largest country on planet Earth looking for a charging station and needing to stay in a hotel every 300 or 400 miles with the issues of getting more juice. If they, our government gets smart, they will force Tesla and others setting up charging stations that cost from $230,00 to $500,000 per charging station to have a unified charging head, (like in all the EU countries) where you can travel most places now without real worry of sitting on the side of the road with NO EV power left. Not ready for prime time yet. I plan on enjoying my MDX and thank God my wife of 53 years gave the Pearl Red a heads up!
Was it really that bad? I have the previous gen TLX SH-AWD and it's fine on the street. Definitely no ZF8 but perfectly fine for a daily driver. And the ZF9 sucks because they had to put 20lb of shit in a 5lb bag; the only good transverse auto transmission is probably the VW DSG.
They benchmarked many. X5 is in there but you have to go way up in price to get similar feature set. We didnt want to do too much of a comparison here.
Nice review!! I’m looking forward to what the new Pilot will be sharing the revised light truck platform. I think Honda does a better job overall with that platform than competitors. As a ex Highlander owner and current Pilot owner, I can say the Pilot is better in every way. The MDX is hot though... And I might go for one if Honda misses the mark on the new Pilot. I hope they don’t try too hard to make it look like a truck.
Really love the work you guys do. Truly value your opinion. Failure to mention the 250lb weigh gain over the prior version is a miss, though. The MDX before this one actually lost 220lbs vs. it’s predecessor.
15:15 "...to the regular person..." ...as Mark floors it from a dig and turning at the same time. 😂 Also, good job on getting it close the "release" date, as opposed to "7 years" later, like with the new RDX. 😉👍🏻
The engine power is more than adeguate for a 3.5 V6. Love the way it pulls. Acura MDX drive is more like X5 dynamics. Am in for one. Thanks. Nice review 👍
that black interior plastic ruins it for me - should have been textured aluminum - or charge a little bit more and use wood/some other exotic material. Excellent review, as always.
I love the scene when Mark, Scott, and Turd lifted up the hood and found there dead cat. Oh my God this show is so funny, swinging a dead cat around by the tail.
14:15 You'd think with 10 gears they could make 2&3 closer together to prevent such a huge RPM drop, challenging the 3.5 to pull all the way up from way down low once it's in 3rd. The lower bottom end torque of the V6 vs. the turbo 4 makes it worse.
I think the torque converter stall speed might also have been reduced to improve fuel economy. The stall speed determines the RPM the engine will drop to after a shift with a significant ratio change. Put another way, the stall speed determines the minimum RPM at WOT. A "looser" converter will help acceleration and launch feel, but it increases slippage (extreme example is the old 5R55S in the V6 Ford Ranger, where it always feels like it's slipping). A "tighter" converter feels more coupled and less slippy, but since it couples at a lower RPM it loads the engine down there, too - and if the engine has no low-end torque, it will take forever to pull into the torque curve after a shift.
In a fowl weather (ie, New England snow storm), even with full winter tires on, I would always ask my wife to drive mdx instead of Bmw or Benz. I know for sure it is much easier to control and less intimidationg in a slipping situations and more confidence inspiring as result. Its AWD and ESC makes it practically impossible to crash or end up in a ditch. albeit less fun on dry compared to RWD biased stuff. well that why you have M and AMGs for the summer.
As always, great review gents! Considering the popularity of this channel, any reason as to why Acura didn't provide you with an A-spec? That chrome on the side and around front grill bugs me far more than it really should. P.s. nice touch with the offroading segment of the show. Most certainly appreciate you going that extra mile with the drone.
Honestly I wouldn’t. The mdx will steal sales from RX buyers, while the gv80 steals buyers from the Germans. The gv80 is on another level in luxury with the Germans. While the mdx is still like the RX, xt6, and xc90 in terms of Luxury.
@@bradleyscarreviews Bradley everyone that has seen your posts knows you are a troll and say on various channels the gv80 or any Hyundai product is the best in their segments when everyone else says otherwise. The GV80 is more luxurious feeling but I honestly prefer the more sporty interior of the MDX. Also can’t get over that hideous steering wheel in the GV80. The GV80 is not going to be anywhere close to even a brand like INFINITI in sales. They have major dealer network issues and tough Genesis makes nice cars Hyundai manages them terribly. The MDX will outsell the GV80 10 to 1 and that’s just the truth regardless of whether it nicer or not. I think they are the best two SUVs for 2021 and great alternatives to the Germans. Also Volvo is up there with the Germans and are very luxurious. The XC90 is the most elegant looking luxury suv out there. Don’t try to put Volvo down as if Genesis has surpassed Volvo and competes solely with Mercedes and BMW. Also American luxury brands aren’t direct competitors to these cars.

The XC90 honestly isn’t that bad with its turbo 4
Not only that but turbos need to get rebuilt at around 100k miles..$$$
4 cylinder turbo is not cheaper to operate, still some what inefficient in respect to MPG, plus engines are somewhat noisy and when considering the turbo, those engines most likely will have to get more maintenance a lot sooner. I taka a V6 any day! not sure why manufacturers have added so many gears to an engine that can benefit from having no more than 6 gears. todays MDX has less power than the 2011 model and gas consumption is relatively about the same.

Best car reviews on RUclips hands down
Another great review guys.
So welcome to JDM auto world
I am glad that Acura is once again bringing cars to the market that people actually want to buy.

Acura has had quite the renaissance the past couple years.
ILX isn't a subcompact. Whatever replaces it won't be a subcompact.

I really appreciate the commentary and research of the mechanics of the vehicles you test, I'm sure to us gear heads its a welcome and what sets you guys apart from the average car reviewer. So I know Mark jokes that it going to bore us but I think it's their edge and my favorite segment.

I just got this last week. The touch pad is easy even when you're driving. It's really smooth to drive and amazingly comfortable. Much better than the BMW i just traded in and rivals the comfortability of a couple Mercedes that i had.
This Acura should hold up a hell of a lot better than a BMW or Mercedes too

A comprehensive review. I can't wait to test drive this new MDX. I am still driving my 2nd generation Elite 3.7/l MDX. Thank you
did you get the new one yet ?
Best car reviewers on RUclips bar none
I love how he's always supporting Hovey Benjamin in his videos.
Great review. I would love to see this new MDX with V6 pitted against the Genssis GV80 with turbo V6.
Another good review. P.S. I hope the "enlargement surgery" was a success.....
He doesn't drive a ginormous lifted truck, so I'd say yes :)
Best technical review yet. Thanks for not wasting my time!
For a few grand less, I think a high end Telluride is a better buy. Much more features and space, with pretty much the same engine
I love your analysis.
Lucky you. I have a mdx with 1800 miles and a constant transmission gear whine. Acura does not know how to fix. Read other forums and see how many complaints. Acura sucks!
Definitely one of my favorite intros for car reviews 🔥
This is my retirement car as well. I love my 2020 MDX Tech!

@@f181234 So was the NSX, funnily enough. Seems to be a little known fact based on my experience.

14:15 You'd think with 10 gears they could make 2&3 closer together to prevent such a huge RPM drop, challenging the 3.5 to pull all the way up from way down low once it's in 3rd. The lower bottom end torque of the V6 vs. the turbo 4 makes it worse.
Very good point
I hate that the ratios aren’t closer, just like in the camry
That is weird. Sounds like the same drop in our old 2012 MDX 3.7 w the 6 speed
Wait...so shiny black plastic is good now?

Would you take the new MDX over the new GV80? Didn't hear that comparison in the video .....your thoughts ..
The gv80 is not impressive dynamically and will definitely not take sales from the Germans I’m sorry to say. They have yet to improve their dealership experience

@@bradleyscarreviews ya I originally thought you liked both cars but can see you are actually just bashing the MDX and flaunting the GV80 on every video.
Best review of the new MDX so far!
