Really good review of the 2022 MDX with a solid emphasis on its advanced features. What I found a bit premature was the comparison to the GLE. §ince this video focused on the features maybe it gets a pass on the comparison. For me, it's not the feature to feature comparison that would lead to a buy decision...it's the after sale durability. Bought my first Acura in 1992, drove it 320,000 miles with no major issues. Bought my second Acura, a 2002 MDX, now with 280,000 miles and still my everyday drive. In 2016 we purchased our 3rd Acura, another MDX for my wife to drive. It wasn't the feature by feature comparison that caused us to buy now 3 Acura products...it was the durability and quality of the products. They rarely ever have service issues which keeps us out of the repair shops. Our experience with the Acura product has been excellent.
I live in North East and we have heavy snow here couple time a year. One year we had big snow storm and lost power to the house, we have little kids in the house so we decided to pack up and drive to a hotel. Along the way to the hotel we saw so many cars including SUV got stuck on the road or just struggled to keep moving. Fortunately my 2019 MDX was so amazing in the snow and we had no issue. unfortunately my 2019 MDX was totaled due to a recent accident so im on the market for 2024 MDX. Shopped around but nothing can compare to MDX in term of value and reliability.
1:05 they were originally open in testing but Acura found it actually made the car less aero dynamic and gave more wind resistance so they sealed them.
I’m doing my research with this suv and this is probably the 10th + video I watched. But I must say YOU ARE THE BEST PERSON WHO REVIEWED THIS SUV 😊 I am very impressed and thankful for this video
OUTSTANDING In-depth review. I appreciate that it was not just beautiful music paired with great photography that accentuates all the beautiful angles & character lines. He EMPHASIZED all the hi-tech aspects, especially all the safety bells & whistles and handling of the vehicle in rain, off-road, etc. I’ll be waiting for his Type-S review!
German automotive for me are leased not bought, however been buying Acuras since 07 making me a loyal Acura buyer knowing that regardless what the critics say, one think(s) is indisputable, their low maintenance and reliability.
Wow 🤩 this is impressive that you were able to get this car so early. You are in my opinion the best reviewer on RUclips. Always current and always showing this features and tests people actually care about. Thank you 🙏🏽
We have owned 5 acuras since 2004 including a TL, 3 MDX and at present driving a 2020 RDX. The MDX should arrive in December and looking forward to it.
My thoughts exactly. Mercedes is only good for 3 years MAX. Then it becomes a pile of parts and $ to replace them. For soccer moms, and families that don’t do serious off-roading, I’d go with the MDX between the 2 all day long. Though at this point I’d wait for the Type-S.
Acura Bluetooth disconnection has been a problem for years now. BT randomly disconnect for 3 years on my 2018 MDX with a Samsung S10 and now the same problem with the 2020 MDX and a brand new samsung S21. I am glad you notice the same problem with the BT on the 2022. So many have complained but got brushed aside by the dealer service department as the PHONE PROBLEM. I almost bought a Huyndai Palisade for more cargo room, better 2nd and 3r row seats (Ryan you can comfortably fit in the 3rd row of the Palisade), and better infosystem ergonomics. I personally detest the touch pad on my wife 2019 RDX, so I turned it in 1 year early -with a loss for a 2020 MDX. Ryan, I don't know whether you have any pulls with Acura engineers . If you are , can you relay the user frustration of the random BT disconnect. I use the phone for business a lot while driving so the disconnection/reconnection has been a huge annoyance for a so-called luxury cars. ALso this presents a driving safety issue as the user has to reach for the phone to continue the conversation, thus violating many states' law of hand free calling. Thanks in advance, A long time frustated owner of 5 acura cars.
It’s not just Acura, I’ve owned BMW’s that do the same. I had to disable Bluetooth for songs and calls and just use the cord into the usb outlet. I just picked up a 2022 MDX aspec and I am getting use to the touchpad and all the technology. I am going to be trying out both the Bluetooth and cord and see how it changes the quality or interface when someone calls.
Yes, in fact, the type S does open the vents in the front bumper. They go to the front brakes. They were planned to be left open in the normal model, and in fact the ducting still exists behind them; however they were blocked off for fuel consumption reasons, and yes any sh-awd model will kick the rear out, the VSA allows some oversteer without intervention though you can still turn it off
@@ShaiyanHossain Even though it makes more sense people these days dont care about sense. Most people these days care about their image. I would love an Acura ODX though.
Yes! But, probably the same reason Lexus doesn't make a Sienna equivalent. That said, the top trims of both the Odyssey and Sienna are premium brand quality. I just want SH-AWD.
This MDX looks great. I was expecting it to be larger on the inside when I heard they increased the wheelbase by 4 inches. That second row seems tight. Unless you are a giant. hahaha.
Definitely would buy the MDX A-Spec over the GLE any day. Maintenance is so much cheaper (Oil Change on MDX is $60, GLE is $200 - 300). Also, its easier to work on Japanese cars over European cars.
I test drove the 2022MDX and the 2021 GLE. GLE lacks power, seems smaller, 3rd row option not enough space. MDX better value, 3rd row, more power, more features. Put a deposit down today on 2022 Avanced MDX.
Dale, I got my new MDX Advance in August, trading in my 2019 MDX on a early Lease termination deal and $1K Loyalty offer from Acura. Never even looked at MB GLE except on line. Load up the GLE and see the $$$$ differene and value of the MDX !! I usually don't like to use the term LOVE for things... (I reserve that word for people), however, I REALLY LIKE THIS CAR! At 70 YO, and after 1 month of ownership, I'm still feeling like a 12 year old kid who got his favorite XMAS toy. I haven't been this "excited" about a new car in long while. I've had many cars over the years, purchased and leased, and I think this tops the level of excitement of the 2007 Infiniti G35X, which was my first Leap into the "luxury" car from Nissans (excluding a 2004 Pathfinder AWD purchased used - a very good SUV but drank gasolione), Pontiacs, Mitsubishis (a 1988 Galant, was an excellently performing spots sedan in the Top of The Line model), Jeep Grand Cherokee. The G35X was the best car I ever owned (leased actually).until the new MDX. I got mine in Fathom Blue Pearl with Graystone Leather Interior. Rarely seen color, that I actually first saw on a Acura MDX Blog site form Pics posted by a Poster, then saw it Live at a dealership, seeing that the paint color name was spot on: It looks like he Fathoms of the Sea, casting different sheens at different angles and different light and accentuating its more muscular redesign. Good Luck !!
We traded our 2008 RDX for the 2022 MDX aspec. We did consider the same thing about premium fuel that we had to use with the turbo 4cyl. So now we can use regular . We only had 160,000 miles but it needed a complete suspension refresh. I think we saved enough money with no payment for 8 extra years past our 5 year loan.
@@chrisrobles2012 MDX engine is exactly the same specs as the 3.5 V6 in the Pilot, but rated using premium fuel. Pilot runs perfectly on regular. Save your money.
Hopefully they tighten up the sound deadening next year work out those little kinks. Sad if you spend 50 to 60 k and called out for road noise or wind noise. With that said I got the 2019 RDX and road and wind noise are really good.
If u buying and keeping long term, my money is on the MDX. I have an MDX 2011 with 102k miles, mostly a car we take on long trips and i love the smooth v6 with the SH-AWD. I hope i can go a few more years on it, already i am considering another MDX as the RDX is a turbo 4 cylinder, nothing beats naturally aspirated V6power!
I love this review because it does not try to review this car as if it’s an x5 M60i!!! This car is for mature buyers that want comfort with the ability to pass people on the freeway
The ridgeline has the same engine at 280HP. The MDX probably needs the premium to officially get the 290HP figure. Of course it could take the minimum of 87 octane since it’s not a turbo car and it’s listed on the gas door.
I hate that the rear window on new suvs do not pop open when the gate is down. I wish they fixed this. Also, the push button for drive and reverse suck. I have a 2017 MDX. It drives amazing so i let these things go, but was hoping they would get it right for 2022.
I had the car play issue as well ..updated the phone and it works perfectly now ,,,just to let you know...and the GLE I had one as well and ill take the 2022 MDX over the GLE ...why would anyone pay 8 to 10k more for a Mercedes badge? lease offers are also much more attractive with Acura plus with the standard featrues you get with the MDX it will cost you dearly with Mercedes packages..and servicing the GLE...the resale value much better on the MDX than the german manufactures ..so that being said .....think before you buy , unless your a badge lover ..the MDX is the way to go
Detailed and good review, one of the best. Especially off-road trail test is not the kind of test you can always see for other reviewers. But, please also mention the dimensions as a footnote somewhere in the video with US and EU measurement units together.
I’d already took Aspec MDX ‘22 over GLE! Honda all day for reliabikity, price, what you get for money, handling and SH AWD for snow beast! With tgier current double wishbone suspension and new body deaign its a win win! GLE are good but pricy to maintain imagine its a euro car/SUV. The middle fold down part of the second row is completely removable. So if you have two car seats, you can still walk through to the back third row seat. It is the only suv that can do that. Thanks for your quality review!
Ryan, great thorough review. Interesting comment about the suspension dampening. I have a 2019 MDX Advance package. When you select sport mode , it does stiffen up the dampening affect of the suspension. You didnt point out that the 2022 has 50 ratio tires vs mine with 45 ratio tires. I had a non advance 2019 loaner last year , with 50 ratio tires on 20 inch wheels, and THERE was a difference in the ride comfort in the Sport mode. Previous generation MDXs don't have Snow modes, this one does. Too bad, Acura seems to hzve dropped the Canyon Bronze metallic exterior color as I have with the espresso leather interior. Since I got mi e in June 2019, I have received many compliments on the color, especially when she is all spiffed up..... I will say the model you tested looks very sharp.
Palisade top trim Calligraphy which is AWD standard is still the best in terms of space, luxury , warranty and features. And still may save you some extra bucks to do road tripp.
Thanks for pressing Acura on the suspension settings. I have a deposit on an Advance and have been looking for this answer for a while. Unfortunately Acura’s literature is quite unclear & it was good to hear an explanation directly from Acura. I agree it’s confusing and unfortunate that they lead you to believe the suspension is adjustable in their settings menu. BTW, we are in the Puget Sound area as well & enjoy seeing vehicles tested and reviewed on the local roads. Out of curiosity, what’s the forest road you use to do your off road testing?
Jean, I’m in Canada and I asked my salesperson about the dampers because the Canadian literature mentions adaptive damper system as standard on all trims, and I was confused with all the US reviews mentioning that they are fixed dampers. My salesperson confirmed with Acura Canada that Canadian models are getting adaptive dampers (while US models aren’t). I’m not sure why this decision was made. Perhaps they didn’t want to hurt Type S sales in the US (based on market research). Or it could have also been a supply issue. I have no idea. On one hand adaptive dampers are nice, but on another, they would be more expensive to fix.
Glad I read this comment and heard the exact words on the video right after ! I think because this technology looks exactly like BMW’s, it probably has the same controller or interface without electric dampers on the suspension so they used the input to change the SH-AWD .
I'm watching your video for the 2nd time. This Vehicle is Exciting. So, if I have this right, there is no suspension dampening changes when changing drive modes? I own a 2019 MDX Advance which Does change the dampening.. In fact with 45 Ratio tires on 20 inch wheels, when selecting Sport Dynamic Mode, the ride becomes too harsh on rough pavements. In a loaner that I had with 50 Ratio tires, it was better than mine. Notwithstanding that, I believe you mentioned that this MDX comes with 50 Ratio tires...
As always, love your reviews but I don't think the MDX compares head to head with a Mercedes GLE. I think the GLE appeals to a different buyer. Needless to say, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a GLE (or ANY Mercedes for that matter) on anything but asphalt. I took my previous RDX off-roading and on the beach many times and take my 2019 MDX SH-AWD off-roading and in the snow quite a bit and its VERY capable. On another note, your comment about road noise has plagued Acura since their inception. They can't seem to get that right in anything they make and it's very disappointing.
DSTV, SAt the opening of your vid, the description says "in Platinum White" color.....yet your video shows the Liquid Platinum Grey color...? Did I miss something. Also, now shopping for an Advance, not too many available. I'm told due to COVID Chip shortages?
That trackpad has relative positioning only when you're using the Acura interface and apps. When you use Android Auto or Apple Car Play, the trackpad just functions like a normal mousepad with a cursor -- which is super lame. It took Lexus a long time to realize that touchscreens are just better, faster, and safer. How long will it take Acura?
Acura says that's a limitation of CarPlay. That they need Apple to either allow them, or Apple needs to add in UI hooks for relative functionality. (I can't recall which it is, but Acura says it's on Apple's plate.)
It seems a little convoluted concerning the Driving Modes : Snow, Comfort, Normal, and Sport and selecting the Sport in Drive? What does the Sport in Drive selection do? How does that affect each of the Driving Dynamic Modes? THX for the Info
I always like your video and watch most if not all your videos. Anyway, if Acura can bring the infotainment screen all the way to the front edge where driver can reach it more easily and make it a touch screen, it would be much better. We all used to touch screen on the phone so it is a much prefer method for me :). Also, the power plant really needs to go above 300hp... my 8 years old 2013 RDX has about the same horse power. Another thing is... Acura probably can learn from KIA and projects the blind spot camera on the dash when the turning signal is activated.
3 mins in, trying back seats: when YOU are the reference you HAVE to tell us what’s your height and weight. Otherwise we can’t tell if the space is large or not. Thank you.
25:54 100% power to tha back wheels , why is the front wheels still spinning then? does it have 120% of power , for the extra 20% to spin the front wheels?
When driving in-car I can only comment on what I was seeing on the gauges at that brief moment, which showed all the power to the back. Given the front wheel was still spinning, it makes sense that it was 100% of the split going to the back, which is up to 70% in most conditions. Hard to know for certain what the gauges actually represent numerically and we've been down that rabbit hole with the engineers -- you'll never get a singular answer.
I believe the most power transfer in any SH-AWD system is 90% to the rear of which up to 100% of that 90% can go to either rear wheel. This means always at least 10% power to the front minimum. There are several different SH-AWD configurations/systems in different Honda/Acura vehicles.
According to Acura it can send up to 100% to the back. But thats only in the unlikely scenario of 0% grip on BOTH front tires. The normal response is officially up to 70%. This is all theoretical and the reality is a highly varied and constantly changing output.
Hi, great review. I noticed the Tech Package has a Camera button on the right lever on the wheel, It hasn't been reviewed or mentioned not even on the actual Acura Official Website. Is that a blind spot camera like Honda?
Nice review! To reduce noise during rain you can try to close the panoramic roof))Great car! Very beautiful brown interior. Hope they will add touch screen and change gear selector from buttons to knob or smth like this. Also it is a dream, but i’d like Acura to have diesel engine also🤷🏻♂️. Keeping in mind reliability I’d prefer Acura.
I would say Mazda's AWD system is similar to most other mainstream crossovers on the market. A clutch system enhanced recently with a new trail mode that works pretty well. SH-AWD is a proper torque vectoring system that overdrives the outside wheel for what is effectively four-wheel steering, which makes them handle better and more fun to drive. The two systems are vastly different and SH-AWD is superior in almost every way (with the exception that wheel braking isn't programmed for trails, only for road cornering, so we get lots of wheel spin as you saw in this video when traction is removed.)
Both appeal to crossover buyers that will rarely go off-road. Ski slopes at most. The GV80 is an incredible buy for what you're getting and it's one of the best looking vehicles on the road. Also great it's a RWD-based system. Disappointed we didn't get the traction modes that the rest of the world gets with the GV80. That would have been a possible game changer. That said, the dealership experience is awful (my wife and I considered a G70 AWD 3.3T for her last car... yes, we're probably the only people to ever cross-shop that with a Subaru Crosstrek) until they can get the Genesis Stores built (and I have yet to ever see one.) Also, long-term reliability is unknown on the Genesis (not bad, just unknown.)
I also cross shopped 2022 MDX and GV80. The price difference for 7 seats (only available in highest model of GV80) was $62,000 for MDX and $78,000 for GV80. If you don't need the 7 seats then maybe could get a lower trim GV80? Reliability unknown but check the Edmunds customer reviews, not many and not very good. Also I found myself going too fast!
Correct me if I'm wrong but is this the first time a mode in the infotainment system to adjust the individual, comfort and sports settings doesn't allow for the dampers to be adjusted ?? It seems that Acura are deceiving their customers because people will naturally presume that the settings allow that as every other car does but how many customers will actually ask that question when looking to buy one. Its a case of if they ask we will tell them but if they don't then let them carry on thinking it does. Also wouldn't the super handling drive system be controlled in the usual way with switching to snow, rock or sand and so on ??
Someone commented that in Canada they are getting adjustable dampers. If that's the case, it's possible it's just lazy programming in the UI... one section for both systems.

Thanks for this amazing review, you just help me to make a decision
Ryan will still pick GLE because he drinks Mercedes Koolaid to bed everynight.

One of most in-depth, honest and unbiased reviews. Thanks!
OUTSTANDING In-depth review. I appreciate that it was not just beautiful music paired with great photography that accentuates all the beautiful angles & character lines. Great in depth review, I have the 2017 MDX love it
Awesome review, if money wasn't an issue and only planning to keep the car less than 3 years, GLE, else MDX all day.
The question is, will you testing the Type-S (MDX & RDX) when it comes out..
There is not RDX Type-S. Even the RDX Apec is more Bspec or Cspec according to Car & Driver.

Thanks in advance,

It’s not just Acura, I’ve owned BMW’s that do the same. I had to disable Bluetooth for songs and calls and just use the cord into the usb outlet.
I just picked up a 2022 MDX aspec and I am getting use to the touchpad and all the technology. I am going to be trying out both the Bluetooth and cord and see how it changes the quality or interface when someone calls.
I'd love to see more thorough off road testing with SH-AWD!

Yes, in fact, the type S does open the vents in the front bumper. They go to the front brakes. They were planned to be left open in the normal model, and in fact the ducting still exists behind them; however they were blocked off for fuel consumption reasons, and yes any sh-awd model will kick the rear out, the VSA allows some oversteer without intervention though you can still turn it off
One can only dream of the Honda Odyssey equivalent from Acura. The Acura ODX SH-AWD maybe 🤔
Maybe with GM Ultium EV underneath that Honda and Acura is going to borrow.

The 2nd row middle seat/armrest/cup holder is removable on all models so the MDX does allow for / have captain seating in the second row.

My 2003 Acura MDX Touring with 195k miles still runs smooth, plan to keep it for another 5 - 7 years, BTW premium fuel is for suckers.

Why does the MDX recommend premium fuel and the Honda Pilot uses regular fuel when they have exactly the same engine?
Different versions of the same engine
Acura tunes theirs differently.
Buick Enclave makes 310hp SAE on low octane fuel.
The ridgeline has the same engine at 280HP. The MDX probably needs the premium to officially get the 290HP figure. Of course it could take the minimum of 87 octane since it’s not a turbo car and it’s listed on the gas door.
Sweet ride. But I think this is silver or gray not white color? Love the interior
Yup. The key tag we were provided was wrong.

It’s near Snoqualmie but we don’t share specifics out of concern they’ll gate the roads if they become too popular.
I really enjoyed watching you set up Apple car play and the rest of the car before your drive. Big plus for me. Nice job 👍

You know the best thing about blind spots become inside will prevent thieves from stealing mirrors, all cars most do that
I'm watching your video for the 2nd time.
Yeah, I was surprised about the road noise in Honda+ product. Even GMC Acadia gets recommended by Consumer Reports but MDX does not.
DSTV, SAt the opening of your vid, the description says "in Platinum White" color.....yet your video shows the Liquid Platinum Grey color...? Did I miss something. Also, now shopping for an Advance, not too many available. I'm told due to COVID Chip shortages?
The key tag has the wrong color on it. And yes, everyone is short on stock these days. Some more than others.
Wow, an SUV I actually like.
Very impressive review. Certainly did a thorough job.
Love this review, 3rd row is a bummer on space. Appreciate your level of detail.
We are thinking of smaller children in back row but hopefully they can get that fixed
Buick Enclave makes 310hp on low octane!
Why would you want to look down at the dashboard when changing lanes? They probably left that feature out deliberately.

Honestly, Idk why you compare this to GLE. GLE is definitely not the same target. GLE with the same equipped will cost 50% and more.
27:42 it is also on the older and newer RDX SH-AWD (4cyl turbo only)

Hi Ryan how is this awd system compare to Mazda's? Which system do you prefer and why? Thanks 😊😊
@@drivingsports 👌😊
Hi Ryan, how do you compare this with Genesis GV80?
the acura being better
@@FullsendOffroad lol it’s not. The gv80 has more tech, power, more luxury etc. duh
Another great review Ryan!
i tested the rdx, my recollection is you have to click on the touchpad to enter location when using android auto.. such a pain.
Hi Ryan. Thank you for producing this video. Please consider reviewing the new Acura MDX S Type off road with its lift mode. Thanks.
