I bought these second hand from a rental shop in Switzerland for 500 euro as my primary and only skis. All in all I'm very happy with them. I can effortlessly ski all day. But your review will make me look at second hand deals for the other skis you mentioned.

Btw, they are on sale now as they are updating it next year. They are removing a bit of metal in sections of the tip and tail rather than just a wiggly slit. It might just make them a bit softer than currently It doesn't appear like a big change. The color will also be mostly uniform rather than having the blue patches. I personally prefer the previous color.

I tried the Montero AX in a 173 cm length, which had a 15.5 m turn radius. I thought that turn radius felt really nice on this ski. It gives me more flexibility than my 165 cm Blizzard Thunderbird R13 to set up bigger arcs while having the forgiving flexibility to rip tighter turns as well. I found that the stability and dampness was really something I appreciated on choppy, icy snow, which is common enough in the Midwest but also probably Europe as well.
Assuming we're talking about firm snow in the Midwest, East Coast, or Europe rather than ski areas which don't prioritize grooming relative to their off-trail terrain, like Grand Targhee or Silverton or Mount Bohemia, this arguably smooths over deficiencies in grooming. I don't think you need perfectly manicured corduroy to get optimal enjoyment out of this ski.
For me, if I had to buy a ski to slot in between my Thunderbird and Enforcer 104, the Montero AR/AX is definitely a contender, as is the Black Crows Octo, and I'm also intrigued by the Stereo Piste RS.

I've probably seen more Stoeckli's on the hill this year than all previous seasons combined.
At a resort that regularly charges $279 for a daily ticket.
    What recession?! 😊😮

Hi Elliott, great review. I've nicknamed my Montero AR, "Miss Smoothie". I have owned and demoed lots of ski brands including the Kendo. I found the Kendo to require more energy input, but it has lots of rebound out of the turn. Both skies felt good up to about 4 inches of powder. I think the Montero has a wider sweet spot and is more tolerant of less than expert skiing ability. The Kendo might be better for younger, hard chargers, but the Montero is better suited to relaxed older skiers. I have a quiver of favorite skis to match snow conditions. I like the Montero AR best on soft groomers. Thanks

Another great review. The AR is a great GS/big carv ski for piste. Not sure if I share your view that the AR is not versatile. I found the the ski to have a good range (tried them on both ice, moguls and soft snow). I would never use them as a off piste tho.

I demo’d this one last season. Agree with your assessment. It was SMOOTH AF on groomers but I actually found that a negative. It’s so “on the rails” it felt like I was on a ride and not really interacting with it. Granted I’m 135lb, but it wants to do what it’s designed for, which is as you’ve described.
My ultimate takeaway was the premium price didn’t justify the very specific performance bump.
    Keep doing your thing 😊

This is a wonderful ski for a broad range of users. I would also argue that it works better than you suggest in a fairly wide range of conditions. There are better, but I ski the Rockies and groomers vary a lot in terms of softness and I am not afraid to duck into a powder stash. The build quality and durability of the Stockli is at the top of the spectrum. Good review - glad you agree that Stockli manages to mix performance with dampness in a pretty unique way.

Hi Elliot, thanks for the great review. I was looking for a 80-90mm ski, which I can use for fresh snow/powder days and as a gs replacement on the pist. I have kind of similar background with some middle and high school racing. However I am 5.7 tall and weigh 144 pounds. (And around 10 years older) I live in Switzerland and stay 90% on pist. Daily driver is atomic fis sls in 157cm. I tried the Montero (175cm) last year and this year for 4 days. Of course it carves nicely, but to me it lacked the rebound after I loaded the ski. I don’t want to say dead, but not very lively for sure. In fresh powder (kinda heavy powder, it felt very heavy) The day after Montero, I switched to Brahma 88 in 177cm and that one was much livelier on pist and even better in powder (even though it is usually described as a very burly ski in skiessentials etc). Surely there are good and bad skis but I guess it is a personal experience. (I might get the Atomic Mav 88s on sale - worse case can sell them after couple of weeks)

A bit on the narrow side. In slushy conditions I get off my AX and get on something wider. Its not terrible, but not the best.

Hi Elliot, hope all well. How would you rank these in terms of max speed, carving, fresh light powder and heavy powder/crud? Mav 88s, montero, SR88, the new enforcer 99, octo, kendo? You can even prepare a new video like this! Thanks a lot!

Very good review Elliot. You are getting your review delivery and style down really well. I liked the comparison between the skis to illustrate your point. Well done and you seemed to capture a stockli well. BTW, the Montero models used to be called lasers so your sense of the past was correct.

My favorite luxury skis are Lacroix LX Carbon.
In Switzerland, Stöcklis are just a normal ski and used even by oldsters. Good skis, for sure, but quite common.

As in every product made today there is a low, medium and high end offering. A ski is a ski is a ski basically. They are all made with the same materials. If you like Swiss products and want pay through your nose, you can. It’s what makes you happy at the end of the day!

    • @scottb6047

Stockli uses a different glue or adhesive in their construction that gives them that very damp smooth feel. Not heat curing involved either.

  • @mathieug6136

Nice I was wondering if you would try the montero AR as it seems they are the ultimate skis one could wish according to most reviews (this or other variations or the lasers)! I actually just bought a pair of 170cm at 15m radius on end of season sale at like 40% off and can't wait for next season hehe. Skiing in Quebec, this should be perfect from morning groom to evening chop.
I was on a forza 70 this year and it was mostly enjoyable in the morning only and the turn radius at 12m was quite turny for a main ski.

My opinion of Stockly i have tried in the past is a lack of liveliness or another way to say it would be too damp and feel heavy. To be fair they turn well and feel very solid ( beefy build). My problem is that other skis give you similar performance for a lot less money. Where i ski most Stockly i see are on the feet of intermediate rich skier …..this is a big turn off for me. Performance is high but value is low for the price. A Kendo 88 or Deacon 84 is a much better value for 1/2 price on sale. You comments are aligned with what i felt when skiing Stockly.

I think their 2025 lineup is going to try and address this. For example, I demo’d their 2025 WRT Pro at Snowbasin a couple weeks ago and it had more carbon and less metal for more forgiveness and playfulness. My girlfriend really liked the lightness and playfulness of the MX.

I am gonna say this before you start talking.. First of all I am always jealous when you ski on Stockli but with that being said my guess is that those skis are meant for rock hard groomers and probably got stuck in the soft stuff.. That is how my 88s are.. Carry on..
According to the Stockli site it says that the 180 cm is 4.11 kg or 4110 kg or 9.061 lbs.. That must be for a pair..
I would be interested in finding out what kind of rubber they use.. You mentioned the difference between a sports car and a luxury car.. I will use my truck as an example.. Good Year Eagles had really soft rubber.. Where as Cooper tires had a harder rubber where I felt the road more and they made a lot more noise and where really slippery.. I would probably want a softer rubber in the ski.. Just seams to handle better..

Ski Essentials loves these and other Stockli models. It's good to hear these skis don't work well on the west coast. I kind of knew it. That one groomed run at Stowe that Ski Essentials tests everything on is nothing like my home mountain's terrain and snow, so their reviews have to be taken with that in mind.

good review as usual -- last time I said work on your powder technique -- this time I say work on your inside leg, knee and foot matching your outside leg. Your inside knee doesn't track properly and you're not tipping the inside ski small to edge to keep ski alignment.... there's always next year 😜
