I get along with snowboarders for the most part. My only gripe with them is when they all camp out on the fall line sitting on their butts doing nothing or looking at their phones. Some skiers do that too to a lesser extent but usually it's these young snowboarders whom daddy buys them their season passes and are content to block the whole trail while they check their Instagram

Some observations as snowboarder that rides mostly in Japan - I noticed that as I was learning, you can side slip your way through all sorts of terrain that you can’t well link turns on (where you have no business being on and where beginner skiers won’t be found), effectively becoming a moving road block (oops…). I’ve seen someone side slip down a lift line ploughing down the layer of powder leaving the icy bit behind (so painful to watch) but it was just that one time. In general skiers tend to be very competent if they start going off piste and through the trees. Beginner / intermediate snowboarders also can have erratic lines as they are still learning to balance. Toe turns and heel side turns are separate skills. However a dominant leg might mean a beginner skier ends up turning left better than right etc too…
Having thankfully graduated from that, I find myself taking straighter lines when around skiers, to better match their flow / move with the lanes. Only when the slope is more empty, I might take bigger arcs and cross more of the hill in my carves. That said, if there are other snowboards at similar speeds it’s just natural to go back to taking a tighter lane.

Yeah on rewatch I understand what he was saying better, though you can keep your head on a swivel as you alternate between toe and heel turns.

"Do you need an ambulance?" That was the kind of comment I got my first few days (without a lesson) learning to snowboard after skiing for 10 years. It was more for comedy than help, but good natured on both sides. I've spent a good bit of life on both. I think the skier prejudice against boarders bonded boarders in a way that never happened with skiers. Boarders, I think, gave "freestyle" activities a boost that never would have occurred quickly with skiing alone.

Excellent video - thanks! While stopped on the side of a trail I got taken out by a snowboarder who couldn't manage to stop. Just a few minor scrapes, but didn't even think to question his right to be on the slopes. Turns out he was a skier that just decided to concentrate on SB in his late 20s. Had a very interesting conversation on the "transition" process. Snowboarders are people too!

Dang, yeah there are some skis that I haven't enjoyed as much as their other widths. The Bent 100 vs 110 is a good example of this. or the Rossi Sender 104 ti vs Sender 110.

Great perspective Elliot ! One point I thoughtI would bring out is that for years skis hardly changed. Sure decks were switched around and their were some minor modifications from year to year but from when I started , c. 1976 until the late 90s skis were skinny mostly with some variability in stiffness. Snowboarding comes along, people say hey this is fun and where switching over to snowboarding or taking it up before they put on a pair of skis. So finally ski manufacturers woke up and gave us skis that were more shaped and easier to learn on and they became very popular amongst all skiers. I'm sure the goof with the glasses would have said that shaped skis were bad and people shouldn't be allowed out on them either if he had been asked. Anyways my take is that snowboarding SAVED skiing ( I'm a skier myself and worked part time in the ski business in the 80s and early 90s btw ) because skiing participation was at a low in the mid 90s but saw a surge when people started trying and buying shaped skis. So yeah snowboarding is different but definitely inferior or dangerous as so many of the meatheads in the 80s wanted people to believe. Snowboarding forced ski manufacturers to change !

I ski and snowboard -- and have to say that you're missing a couple reasons for razzing boarders -- 1) sitting just below a roller to rest -- It makes sense to a boarder (easier to stand back up on a slope than flat) BUT makes you invisible ro a skier coming down the slope too fast. It took years to correct my gf of that habit. 2) getting in over your head -- as a fairly good but not great snowboarder, I could go down double and triple black terrain, I had no business being on and that was due to 3) being able to easily sideslip toside or heelside down the trail - scraping all the snow. I decided that unfortunately I wasn't going to get any better snowboarding because I could cheat AND snowboarding was a lot more dangerous to me, because I was constantly jumping, spinning, doing backflips, despite not having as much skill and control on a board. I tend to see more snowboarders than skiers on terrain above their skill levels.

100 percent accurate...my issue as someone who is able snowboard and ski. I was comfortable exploring black terrain on the second day once I got my heel edge and toe edge grip. You can always heel slide. So yeah snowboarders are always jumping and pushing themselves past limits they can handle. The second issue is sitting in the middle of the run...this season in California at mammoth and heavenly, I've just been having to dodge beginner snowboarders like an obstacle course all sitting in the middle of the run. Even on blues and blacks can't escape the jerrys sitting in the middle of the run.

Snowboarding: Blind spot, strapping in, sit in snow, can’t traverse flats, great float, can’t sit on a lift.
Skiing: 3000 year old mode of transportation, face the fall line, more precise, independent suspension, can sit on a lift.
Boarding is fun in pow and park. Skiing is better at almost everything.

    So true -
How many times do we see intermediate (at best!) skiers insisting on skiing down a black diamond slope:
    Straight down the middle
    Hockey stop
    Hockey stop
    Hockey stop
Then they wonder "How did it get so icy?" by 1:00 PM 🙄
I've never rode a snowboard but good carving snowboarding is safe, fun, and impressive. ✌️

When i grew up we hated ski instructors and laughed at how they skied, Euro-Style, with their legs tied together wiggling their butts. Mostly it was their snobbery that lead to mockery. Elliot, you should do ‘evolution’ of ski style video. Maybe you could explain why twin tip park skier stand so upright and look like they are reading a book when they hold their poles. It’s all just style, taste and fashion? Or is there a ‘right’ way? ❤

As someone who has feet in both worlds... Thanks for the morning laugh! || I was around both ski competitions when I was young as well as snowboard competitions, and yes, the snowboard culture was way more chill and perhaps why i escaped the drills and strictness of ski racing towards the snb world. I remember most of the snb community I was part of came from skiing originally - many of my snb friends came from ski teams, so they didn't have any hate towards skiers, they just thought skiers were squares, and wanted to be left alone to do their own thing. But wherever I am riding in the world, skiers seem to be a bit crankier. And not just towards snb, but also towards other skiers.
On the other hand the "mountain etiquette" seems to be passed down among skiers way better than among snowboarders, unfortunately.

I skied from age 3-20 until my skis got stolen in college. My friend was a good snowboarder and he gave me one of his old boards (1993). I skateboarded (mini-ramp) too so it felt like a blending of two sports I enjoyed. I loved the carving and gliding feeling of a snowboard. At the time skis were straight and long and the technique was different and did not involve carving. I mostly snowboarded for the next 15 or so years. However, a couple of times I rented skis to try the new hourglass shape.. my first observation was how short they were (I felt like I was 10 years old again when looking down) and the second was how similar snowboarding and skiing now felt. I now ski more than I board, mainly because I am teaching my kids to ski. But honestly there isn't much difference between the two any longer.

I love that you get irate over a 40 year old video. I live in Government Camp on Mt. Hood and there is a cadre of outlaw snowboarders we call Govy scum. But they are cool for the most part. I've been skiing for years but still intend to try boarding some day. I skateboarded way back in the 80s so it should be a quick learn. However, skiing is better, and I'm reminded of something a co-worker at Angel Fire once said to me as to why skiing is better. He said "I like to face my problems head on." He had a whole bunch of those clever one liners. Keep up the great videos.

In addition to your comments, I heard from ski patroller on a lift I was on at Deer Valley that they don't allow snowboarders becuase they form "irregular moguls" for their guests. A skilled snowboarder carving pushes around less snow than a skilled skier carving (snowboards tend to be shorter in length and have two edges versus four edges on skis). The new "discrimination" is now regarding ski bikes (or whatever they are called). People either use common sense combined with respect for the safety of others or they don't. It has nothing to do with what is attached to someone's feet.

Idk I see probably 30 rogue skies to one snowboard flying down the mountain a season. Bunny hill is a different story after teaching my daughter last year closer to 5 skies to 1 snowboard from kids getting off the magic carpet then putting the board or skies down and it just getting away from them before they strapped or stepped in.
The riding up the lift though, as a snowboarder, after giving up skiing. I would agree there are definitely more boarders that hit other people equipment on the lift. But more skiers just put the bar down with no warning. Either way there's room for both of us.. ALTA.. DEER VALLEY.. GLEN

I think us Skiers have caught up to or even surpassed Boarders when it comes to WEED consumption! I've always preferred learning Boarders vs Skiers. New skiers meander all across the hill too slowly and are far too unpredictable. New Boarders learn to stop via CRASHING, much more predictable and respectable!

Skiers are more likely to be Karen’s, and they do sometimes stand sideways and block three gates of the lift line all at the same time. Now let’s get into the snowboarders…. They are a menace on and off lifts. They don’t want to use the safety bar especially if it has a foot rest. When they fall fall, they fall hard, so they end up sitting in the middle of the slope for 5 or 10 minutes recovering. Their constantly stomping little trenches into the snow when they strap in. They struggle to check their heel-side turn blind spot. And then there are cultural differences…. Snowboarders are always the ones with bluetooth speakers hanging off their backpacks. They love having a snack on the lift, which is fine, but they do not do a good job, keeping track of their sandwich, bags and candy bar wrappers. The real problem though is that snowboarding takes so long to get good at that they continue to struggle until they have like 40 days on snow. I will say this for them though, once you go beyond blue squares, or off piste, the problems largely disappear, but then again, so do the snowboarders.

There's enough behavior demonstrated from either sport to reinforce some of the stereotypes. I grew up learning to ski in the 1980's. I saw plenty of the stereotypical behavior at the small resort where snowboarding became popular. I will say, I think both sports have become much more understanding and matured.
As far as which is popular or not, snowboarding gave the skiing industry a kick in the pockets to innovate (shaped skis, twin tip park skis, wide skis) because I don't think it was increasing in popularity as a whole when snowboarding hit the hills.

Sideslipping powder out of chutes and sitting in the middle of the run are my two biggest issue with new snowboarders. California resorts are brutal with novice boarders all chillin in the middle of the run... taking a break, enjoying the lakeview 😂. It's super annoying. I primarily ski but also snowboard. Essentially my advanced snowboarding friends dont bother me at all but a lot of the begginner snowboarders especially in California resorts seem to lack common sense or mountain etiquette. Dont go on a run if you have to side slip the whole thing, you're not good enough to be there and dont sit in the middle of a run. Even if you fall, get up asap and move over to the side of the run if you need a breather

Don't have huge problems with snowboarders other than a couple times with them missing me by inches or the ones on my lift that almost causing severe injury toppling over me getting off the lift because they were stoned. The other funny thing is how snowboarders seem to relinquish the English language altogether when on the slopes. Skiers will pass people and you hear "on your left." Snowboarders pass and they're like "booga booga booga!"

I don't have much of a problem with snowboarding, it's more so what I see them having to deal with in the lift line, getting off the chair, sitting down all over the mountain, getting stuck in the flats, riding on firm snow ... it just looks plain miserable. It actually looks pretty fun riding powder, but the rest of it is not appealing to me.

I had a crappy snowboard before I ever skied but once I started skiing never went back (also late 80s/early 90s). My primary issue with the knuckledraggers is what was already sort of mentioned... they tend to be inconsiderate or completely oblivious to others with their bluetooth speakers, vaping on the chairs, banging their boards into the boards or skis of the person next to them on the chairs, never looking uphill when merging onto a run, etc. Note, this almost always tends to be intermediate snowboarders - don't really see that complete obliviousness from beginners or advanced/expert snowboarders. Had 2 boarders on the Deer Point lift recently discussing how they had to switch to vaping nicotine (while vaping on the chair) because they were out of weed and all I could think is that these inconsiderate morons have never heard of edibles.

The one thing that sets snowboarders apart, and make them less desirable, is that when you go sideways down the mountain you dont have as much overview as when going straight down. Going straight down like on skii you can look equal left and right, but a snowboarder will always have their back to one side of the mountain.

About snowboarding scraping the piste. Skiers do it too, but snowboarders can do it better. In fact I wish we had more athlete in the racing club with snowboarder parents cause we need volunteers to scrape the course and having followed a boarder doing it they do a phenomenal job 😁 like they can straight push with both leg on one edge while we kinda rotate push on 2 edge... Its less efficient.

The biggest #1: They typically do not know or adhear to the etiquette/rules of the mountain.. down hill traffic has the right away.. I can't see u blasting down behind me
#2 just a general lack of awareness/ care of where they are and what they are doing... O sitting on the back side of this roller seems like a great place to rest
#3 this is my cranky skier, but there seems to be far more bad snowboarders than there are good and they just push all the snow away
