Trying to FIX: Nintendo Switch Lite BACKLIGHT FAULT (Black Screen)

  • Hi, in this video I attempt to repair a Nintendo Switch Lite with no backlight. The Switch Lite is working but has a black screen so you can't see what is being displayed. I purchased 2 Switch Lites from eBay for £199. This is the 2nd video where I am working on the grey one.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

    Hey Vince,
In regards to the sideboard with the missing connector lock. My NEW 3DS XL had the same exact connector, albeit with more pins, but I unfortunately damaged it. But what I did to rectify the issue was cut a piece of electrical tape to the size of the width of the pins on the cable itself, but place on the opposite side of the cable where there’s just plastic. That way, it becomes more of a friction fit style connector.
I did this to my 3DS and it has been fine ever since. But of course, I’m not entirely aware of any additional problems your unit could have.

  • @davesmith7671
    @davesmith7671 4 года назад +8

Vince I tend to use croc clips with some fine wire for small things like those pins . I just clip them to the leads and use them like they were the probes. I wonder if maybe a pair of small sewing needles soldered to some wires to the croc clips would be better to get that finer point though. I just thought I'd share that one as I use it quite often when working on laptop traces and tablets.

Vince mate, you need to inject voltage into the board and see what heats up either by putting ipa on the chips and watching it dissipate or getting an in-fared heat detector device, its the only way to reasonably find a fault of that manner. plus i do not think the back-light will show 17v without it being connected as i'm 99.9999% sure they are current controlled and it actually has to be on for the 17v to show. another note Coils don't short usually, they fail open.. could be the coil though doubtful

(10:38) - Sorry Vince, but that is not *_"corrosion"._*
    _NOT_ *_"water damage."_*
It's flash-burn damage caused by electrical arcing.
My guess is that all these arc burns happened at exactly the same time.
Specifically, when the device suffered it's fateful impact.
That is, when it was thrown against the wall in a fit of pique.

Wait a moment, why does he attribute a screen with no back light to the flex cable? Isn't this cable JUST supposed to connect the left mini board (Left shoulder buttons, D-PAD, Left Stick, Minus and Share button) to the rest of the board? Or is that flex cable supposed to do something else other than that?
My Switch powers on normally and gets to the welcome screen. After some time of inactivity, it goes to sleep. Upon pressing the POW button, it immediately shuts down. But trying to wake it up with the HOME button (right motherboard) works. I found that this cable has a broken via, could that be the reason or something else?

Yeh i learned to inject voltage into the shorted line and see what gets hot, you can even use a battery if you don't have a power supply, or one which you can control the voltage and current output on, also covering the board with lighter fluid before injecting the power is a neat trick, you see the petrol evaporate on the shorted component easily

The fact that you measure 3.7V after you replaced the inductor with a piece of wire does not prove anything. It's a boost converter: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boost_converter . Even if the controller chip/switching device is broken you'll still measure supply voltage - which is the 3.7V battery voltage. (Also, replacing the inductor in a boost converter with a wire is a great way to kill the switching device if it wasn't dead already)

Hi Vince, I had a lid on a connector snap-off on me when replacing my laptop screen, but I came up with a solution. Firstly position the ribbon cable where it should go in the connector and stick it down with kapton tape just in front of the connector to hold it in place.
Then find some stiff plastic about 1mm diametre and cut a rectangle piece the size of the opening of the connector twice as long as you need.
Then bend it over and make a crease at one end and the opposite end you pinch and close them and insert it into the connector and tape it down so it stays there.
The springiness will hold the ribbon cable down in place making a proper connection.
This worked for me and it is a bit of a fiddle to get it right but it worked for my laptop and that was three years ago.

Just a thought, you could remove the inductor from the working switch lite and test it with your little 9v multi component tester to find out what the value is? I've never needed to measure an inductor with mine, but I tried a spare one and it worked, it came up with 12ohms, 9.59mH, so you could find out what the value is supposed to be with that. As for the connector... I don't have one to look at, but if you google FPC connectors, you might be able to find one that is the same.

I may be showing my age, but try CRT's. The HV is about 25,000 V. No amps behind it, but it gives you a mean bite if you put your fingers where they shouldn't be.

You can still measure the coil from a working one with the LCR meter. Current ratio could be an issue but 150mA or so should do the trick. I dont think that backlight will disipate more than 2 or 3W. Just saying ....

Hey Vince, these connectors have come up on aliexpress today, search for "switch lite power connector" Theyre like £9 for 2 of them though.

    My names Al
Iv got a Wii u and your videos have helped.
I’d really like to down size the Wii u game pad into a smaller shell.
Do you think it’s possible to repackage the game pad into a smaller case.
Have you ever done this ??

If you have an inductance meter or LCR meter then you can measure the inductor on the working switch lite.

A wild guess but i believe the previous owner experienced drift and opened it to fix that but in the process he/she broke the connector and when he/she put it in again it didn't go fully in or was jumping around so it caused the arcs...

Have you checked to see if that short is actually still on the connector? Maybe it was that black corrosion you scraped off after you removed the connector, iv had conductive corrosion like that before cause a short. I only say that just incase you could put that connector back on with heat from below the board

That's some nice detective work there. Honestly it's a bit surprising to me that the 17V path isn't more isolated from the rest. You could perhaps take out and measure the inductance of the coil from the working one. And if you can't get some new connectors (and ribbon cable), perhaps you could use some tiny wires instead of the ribbon cable, which was in a bad shape anyway. When you use that fiberglass pen on the contacts, you remove the gold plating, which could eventually lead to oxidation and bad connections at a later date. Solder might also make it uneven enough so that the connection on the other contacts become poor. It's damn unfortunate with the broken display though.

I thought the same but Dave (eevblog) and louis rossman have videos showing the same issue on apple products, think maybe it was a MacBook, high voltage pin right next to a ground pin. I don't know a lot about electronics at all but guess maybe it's just common now with all these super high density boards

@@ekens6344 I'm no expert, but it seems a bit sloppy to me. One would expect engineers hired by high-profile companies to do a better job when designing these things. I've seen some of those videos you mention, I think.

Hi Vince can I ask you what type of working pad that you have because I would like to get one myself as I can't do much anymore because I hurt my back and have had a major back operation this sort of thing would be good for me to get into and I am quite handy at this sort of thing look forward to hearing from you kind regards Jamie Sutherland

With the black marks on the PCB it's possible the short was internal to the pcb

the no video issue could be a result of either a faulty PI3USB or the filters near it. Give this a try. There doesn't have to be a shorted cap for it to be bad.

@My Mate VINCE You wouldn't happen to know how to remove the little WiFi connector bits from the ends of the antennas would you? I stupidly managed to snap them off with my thumbnail when I was doing a tear-down and fan replacement at quarter to 2 in the morning and no ones been able to give me any insight on how to get them out without causing further damage. I'm really OCD when it comes to my laptop not working 100% as it should. If i can get those little pieces out all II'll need to do is replace the WiFi card. I think a pair of tweezers like that would really come in handy! Please help!
