If you are car is burning oil the crankcase ventilation valve (CCV) may have gone bad. The CCV recirculates gases from the engine back into the intake while draining the oil back into the oil pan. This can go bad and cause vacuum issues pulling oil into intake manifold and burning oil in your engine. I thought my CCV was bad even though my tests showed it was fine. I think it may have been still good but I wanted to double check this was not the issue. Hope you enjoy the tutorial! If any of the info in the video was helpful, consider dropping a LIKE!
Backstory: My BMW 325i n52 engine was burning oil at 1L/1000kms and getting worse so this is one of the videos in my RUclips series where we investigate how to fix our oil burning issues. If you're interested in checking out my other videos and consider subscribing to follow along!

wow! THANK YOU! after watching at least 20 different videos on removing the intake manifold and replacing the hoses AND buying cheap after market hoses (sorry but im broke and it needed to be fixed asap) i too discovered that the o rings did not fit! this is THE only video i found that addresses that! i went and bought an assorted o ring kit (metric) at HF and replaced them. i, like you am hoping that doesn't come back and bite me! i love my car (06 325i E90 N52) but EVERYFREKINGTIME the tools come out its a battle of wits between two really hard-headed germans (lineage)! thanks to you, i am going back to finish without wondering if i am doing this correctly! love you for this! thanks again! @Build&Drive
The lower hose leaked after one year with the other o-rings unfortunately. But I had only put 1 o ring on. I think if I had 2 it would have been fine.
Yeah this man has help me big time with my car wanna say thank u man
Hope so! 🙏🏼
Wow! Thank you! This same procedure applies for 5 series also. WATCH the video DIY people!
At 2852 on the video I just try that and worked thank u for ur help man just waiting for my disa to get here in the mail should be here by Thursday waiting on FedEx but yeah can't wait to get my car back together
I have a whole disa video coming up in a month or so👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Glad you got yours fixed!!!
My car was smoking really bad out of the exhaust so I replace alot parts on my ccv and plus hoses so finger crossed nothing more happens to my car I really like my n52 engine was told not to get rid of it
My bmw is doing the same thing. Thank to your video. It was very informative. I've resolved the problem. I no longer have a bmw lol
How did you resolve the problem?
@@buildanddrive I got rid of the car after seeing how much work you had to go through just to take out the intake.
Lol. Its the CCV that is horrible

Thanks for the help bro
You're welcome! 💪🏽
dude, thats amazing.
Thanks! 🙏🏼
Great video, putting mine back together today, how did you connect the lower CCV hose that runs to the oil pan? Did you connect it from underneath, by removing the metal cover? Or from up top, I cannot get it connected, maybe I am not positioning the intake just right, or there is a method I have not seen? 2006 E90 325XI
There's a few ways you can attach it. I attach it at the bottom first, then put the intake in position and reach into the intake (standing from the front of the engine) and attach it to the ccv. It takes 2 hands and a bit of luck
Nice video👌🏼BMW had replaced mine for free cuz it was under recall
That's awesome. What BMW do you have?
I’m going in for my appointment this Monday to get mine replaced free of charge they sent me an email about the recall an asked to set an appointment to have it replaced under recall warranty
Nice. Which car, year/model do you have?
@@buildanddrive It was on my 2008 BMW 328i
@@buildanddrive it’s the 2006 325i I got it back in July it is not the fastest Bmw but I really do enjoy driving it especially that heavy steering you feel so tuned in with the vehicle an handles corners like a beauty 😊
Thank you so much man u saved me
Can i fix it without replace it?
Can u post a video of u fixing it?
Fixing what?
That was pretty damn good
Thanks, I appreciate the comment! Hope the video can help you fix your car 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
New Chinese parts don't quite fit. Need an extra set of hands. Torn nitrile gloves. Increased frustration noted in voice. Need the car the next day. Aaand fix didn't work. LOVE IT! Rings so true. Unfortunately I've got the same problem and about to go down same rabbit hole --- although I've got rough idle + burning oil so hopefully this fixes it. (Been through cleaning VANOS, MAF, no help.)
Hey man, thanks for the in-depth video. Did you have to buy all those parts separately, or is there a kit? I have an 07 328xi with a N51 engine and I'm struggling to find a kit for it. Looking forward to tackling this exact job on my vehicle with the help of your video. Thanks again, and take care.
I bought a China eBay kit for 80$. Lower CCV hose didn't really fit... So I would go BMW or OEM Replacement next time at least for the lower hose. You kinda roll the dice with these kits.
@@buildanddrive Exactly ! I would also advise OEM, bmw doctor on YT advises it too.
In Belgium, I had to order the OEM parts separately at BMW. It was 80€ for the CCV and +/- 120€ for the hoses/pipes :)
Can someone supply the oe or oem part numbers as i cannot fins anywhere
Get it replaced free at the dealer there’s a recall on it
You can fit the two O rings by removing the yellow part out and then putting it back again
But when I tried to fit the lower hose onto the oil pan, it wouldn't fit at all. Not sure why but probably bad by design.
Thanks.... very helpful
Appreciate it! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Be sure to check the DISA valves when the manifold is off. My inner one had failed, it wasn't initially throwing a code so seemed OK.
Yeah, I replaced my inner one and then the outer one went bad recently. I will change it out and make a video on how to double check if it's bad.
Yes make a video on how to tell if they are bad please . I believe my inner one is bad
Yep, I am planning on it this week. You use ista to test each disa valve with the computer and try to operate the flap manually. You can watch the valve open and close and normally when it's bad, the motor makes a bad grinding noise and it doesnt open.
Send me a message on Instagram and I will send you the video as soon as it's done
Hey there,I have a Bmw e60 530i 2007 .
Start to smoke blue smoke a months ago and i Replace the pcv valve and hoses after than they stop to smoke.
But week ago i get it back the same issues...smoke bad idling.
Good video now I found what I am looking for but still need help please
Thanks a lot mann!
Hope it worked out!
Hey buddy I kinda have the same issue but without the oil burning. The issue of rough idling at startup but not during cold startup meaning when I’ve driven a bit, parked and came back to start again, that’s when the rough idling manifests and after 10/15 secs it normalises. I thought it would be the ccv too but i also have normal suction. I omce thought it was the vanos solenoids and check valves but when I cleaned them, the problew was less but was still there
Try to do a vacuum leak test on the engine. That was the issue with my car. Check it here ruclips.net/video/_5Sbz818YVI/видео.html
Could be the iac valve
That what I am working on now same thing on this video I took off the intake manifold oil was coming out of it
Hope you can get it fixed
Hey so my n52 runs rough when I start as well. I had a bouncy rpm needle at idle and my fix was luckily simple. Jiffy lube didn’t replace the little plastic jig that sits inside the oil filter.
On another note though, when you say rough idle on start what do you mean? Mine doesn’t have a super jumpy rpm needle, but the car kind of shakes and you can feel the engine loping almost. Do you think doing the same change will fix the issue?
The rough idle feels like an air leak in the intake system. The engine revs up a bit above idle (1200rpm) and then comes back down. Like you describe, a bouncy idle. I would first smoke test the intake and engine to see where the air leak is. See if that fixes the problem. Then swap the CCV.
I had the same problem at 20:28 with the o-rings not seating, it's infuriating. Rein part. Eventually got it to seat with both the o-rings but was sceptical at the time. Checking back after a couple months, it's leaking... Not happy. See from another comment yours eventually leaked too. Did you go genuine for the new hose? Was the design any different? Thanks
The BMW part fits fine. There is like 1mm difference in the hose dimension, probably due to bad plastic moulding. Mine leaked after a year 😔
I have a 2009 328 with N51 engine and it blows white smoke. The oil level slowly consume probably every 1000 mile I would need 1 qt. If I floor the gas pedal I get a white 💨. Does the N51 come with a CCVunder intake and pvc on the valve cover? Would I have replace both? I new to BMW and trying to fix my first E90. The car drive good if I keep it light in the gas pedal and not travel more than 5 miles distance with it.
If you have the magnesium valve cover, yes, it's under the intake. If you have the plastic valve cover, then no, it's part of the valve cover
1:12 to 1:18 ... that tick tick tick noise when you lift the oil cap is it normal??? did the noise went away once you changed the CCV? Or did the noise remain even after you changrd the CCV and still made tick tick tick when you lift the oil cap with the brand new CCV?
This is normal
Hi friend, I watched your video because I think it can help me. I own BMW E46 when idling and I take out dip stick the oil comes out . And even the exhaust pipe has oil. And it smokes badly.
I dismantled the engine thinking it is worn rings, I inspected them but to me they don't look to be the root cause.
Do you think it can be ccv
Moshitoa south Africa
Yes, try the CCV first.
From that startup screeching sound, it sounded you had an alternator's pulley bearing issue going on, or a drive belt one.
Yes, the serpentine belt melted one of the ribs at the racetrack. But it still works fine. Lol
Part Number for the CCV you used in the video? I replaced the check Valve from OE to VTT
Which check valve?
I finally replaced my pcv valve and it took me 3 hours, man o man was it a pain because some of the hoses were really stuck
Those hoses are the worst. I normally am bleeding by the end of it all
@@buildanddrive I took it out for a drive and no more smoking oil, wohooooo!!!!
Honestly this is why I take this to my mechanic, i never planned on being a mechanic for bmw, I rather drive it 😫😂😂😂
Best comment ever. It's true. You become a mechanic when you drive old BMWs
Lazy 🦥
Mine will happen just like this !
Mine started to blow smoke and burn smell through the ac vents, do you have an idea if that PCV causing the problem? It's a 2010 328i xdrive
It's possible you have a pcv problem.
Do I need the lock to attach the bottom part of the hose or it goes in just with hand pressure
It should make a clicking sound
Yo so I just got a letter from bmw about this now my car had all these issues burned oil super fast and the pcv definitely went car shut off I hope this recall for it will fix my issues and bmw will take care of it what do you think? And yea my car was super dry lucky I bought a infinity but still got the poor bmw sitting outside waiting to come back alive 😂☝️
That’s not the CCV. Based on that screech during startup, you have a vacuum leak, thus the rough idle. I’d say it’s your eccentric shaft actuator gasket. I had the same exact problem a month ago. Did you check coils 3 and 4 for surrounding oil?
Yes, there is always oil around that spot. Good observation. I eventually smoked tested the engine and found the vanos seals and disa valve was leaking air. ruclips.net/video/_5Sbz818YVI/видео.htmlsi=jrtl8Q2JvhEheOdY
Did you have to disconnect the battery before working on the manifold?
Yes, I would.
Link to the valve?
Feel your pain on aftermarket parts. I’ve just bought genuine BMW, at least I know they’ll fit! Did you get to the bottom of your oil consumption? Cheers from England!
Yes, piston rings were well worn out and overall piston design is bad. Would need to update it.
I had the same issue. Eventually it snapped in with some extra force. At first it would just be halfway on and just pull right off
Yeah, the CCV is the worst job on this engine.
The N51 motor has an integrated PCV in the valve cover. It's a SULEV engine
So, me assuming N52/53/53 aint SULEV engine. They did not have this CCV?
My one is 530i 2007 ,when I remove my intake there was a too much oil inside.
Replace pcv valve hoses.
Valve cover gasket.
But week ago i have same problem start smoke again ..blue silver black smoke.
The intake was full of oil.
What to do next any idea?
Smoke test your engine first to check there are air leaks anywhere. ruclips.net/video/_5Sbz818YVI/видео.html then it could be valve stem seals
If you don’t have an E14 or E18 you can use a 14mm and an 11mm socket
Great idea 👍🏽
I ‘think’ I’m having an issue with my CCV/PCV on my 84k mile E63 630i as a few days ago when I accelerated, it suddenly blew loads of smoke! I have only been using the car for really short journeys unfortunately.. I do try to give it a longer run sometimes, but generally..it’s to the gym & back, about 1.5 miles.. which is not even enough to get the oil temp gauge to move.
The smoke cleared with a long run..and drove fine, no smoke. And today, it was driving fine, but when I accelerated using the kick down and…..loads of smoke!
It’s going into a BM Specialist tomorrow to confirm and have its annual service.
Sounds like the CCV. If you replace this and it still has smoke on acceleration, it can be the pistons rings
@@buildanddrive Agreed, I’m hoping it’ll be obviously the CCV with oil in the intake etc.. The car runs fine, has never used oil, and has zero smoke when driving normal. It has only done the huge smoke plume twice, and always cleared afterwards. I know short journeys can cause these sort of issues.. so, here’s hoping it’s just the crankcase vent valve 🤞🏼
Thanks for the reply 👍🏼
Did it fix your issue?
@@buildanddrive Still don't know, the garage still have the car. A new PCV was ordered today, hoping the garage will get it fitted by the end of the week. The garage cast doubt on the PCV, instead their opinion is on valve seals. The car has 84k miles & full history, so I'm really hoping it's not. I have asked them to do the PCV first.. & I will go from there.
@@waynester71 hey mine is doing the exact same thing. What did yours turn out to be? Ccv?
Hi did this fix the rough idle on start up?
No, it was a bad disa valve leaking and vanos seals. ruclips.net/video/_5Sbz818YVI/видео.html
Hello!
I have some problems with ccv circuit and I remove it, I let the pipe free to evacuated the gases in the atmosphere and I blocked the one which is going in the oil pan, for now, i want to reinstall the cirtcuit and a new ccv valve but i want to check pcv valve to , where do I find this, I searched everywhere on the internet but nothing about pcv location on n52 with magnesium cranckcase…Do they have pcv or the ccv is the only one?
Thank you very much!
It's a CCV. If you have magnesium valve cover then it looks like the one replaced in this video.
Hello, i have a problem with my e60, the climate controll only blows air through the vents in the middle of the car, on the middle of the dashboard, and in the back of center consoll towards the backseats) not on the sides on the dash or in front of the dash. Do you know what can be the problem?
There is a little motor that switches the air to the vents. Try to turn on your AC and select the middle vent. Can you hear a short whining noise? If not you may need to replace that vent switcher motor thingy
It is common knowledge that N52 engines consume oil. But only the N52B25 engines are affected. The N52B30 engines are not affected. The reason for the high oil consumption is not due to a defective CCV (KGE in German) but to incorrectly placed oil drainage holes on the pistons. BMW itself also saw this and revised the pistons. I have the same engine as you, but the consumption of my engine is not as bad as yours, but still too high. So, if you want the high oil consumption to disappear, you would have to replace all pistons with new, reworked pistons. Here in Germany such an action would cost around 3000-4000 euros. Greetings.
Danke. I rebuilt the engine in my garage 💪🏽. Consumption improved but I didn't know about the pistons until after lol 😂
Did this help with oil consumption?
For my oil consumption, it did not help, the CCV was okay. The piston rings were the issue.
First time I'm seeing a metal valve cover on a BMW. Is that after market?
Stock. Only for 2005 to 2007.
After seeing how complicated a german car is, i miss my 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix.
Lol
Please help with advice, BMW E60, 2009 528, 234🐎, N52, on propane gas, bad start when hot, on the third try, everything is ok when cold.
I changed injectors, thermostat, crankshaft sensor, temperature sensor, fuel pump with filter, no sense, gives errors P0420, P0430 and 2EF4. Please help me with advice, I don’t know where to dig anymore.
I would try and vacuum leak test. I have a video showing how to do that. It sounds like when cold, it works on the stock MAP but when hot, the sensors get in the way from starting. Does it rev up a bit when you start the engine?
thank you but i think you should go to change the oil as 5w 40
What oil do you recommend?
What was the tool you used to get that bottom hose off? Did you have a link to site for that red tool removal?
It actually didn't work very well 😅 google ac fuel line disconnect tool. They come in a set and are blue. Try those. There is one that fits in the set
@@buildanddrive Do the angled ones work any better? Or am I better off with the flat ones?
Angled ones. They have a small handle on them 😁
How come the N52 in my F10 528i has the PCV on the valve cover?
It's a blacktop. Newer motor and CCV design
Thanks
I have problem. When I start the car it starts rattling for about a minute. When heated it emits a lot of white smoke and has no power. Consumption from 10l climbed to 18l. CCV problem?
Is it burning coolant?
No need to change gaskets between intake and engine?
I had already changed them a while ago and they were still good

😆 tough stuff
The oil cap opened too easily, it's supposed to have vacuum, not normal conditions
Yes. Air was escaping elsewhere. I created a smoke tester and found the air leaks. It's on my channel
lol the intake lose wouldve caused a rough idle. my 07 n52 has what i thought was the ccv valve built into the valve cover, mine was plastic. Replaced that and it fixed the rough idle, but now im getting a bmw pcv heater valve recall from bmw telling me to come in so they can fix it for free
I did a smoke test on the engine and found a few leaks actually. One was the disa valve on the intake and one from the vanos rubber o-rings as well. Silly question. Can this CCV be deleted?
Sort of. With the black valve cover you can install a catch can but with the magnesium one, I think it's a bit more difficult
@@buildanddrive magnessium one? What you mean?
I do know that N52/53 blocks were magnessium, just doesn't get on why not with oil catch cwn. Enlighten me please
So, how did you managed to reconnect the oil return hose? You cut off the hardest part
Yeah, I struggled with that for a while. Either connect the lower hose to the CCV and put the intake on, then from the wheel well reach in and try to attach it. Or attach it first at the bottom oil pan and then as you put the intake on, you have to push the intake onto the hose itself... It's like a dance and it's not each.
@@buildanddrive I finally got it. I noticed that I didn't put the valve cover hose the right way, so I couldn't lower the intake enough to connect the oil return hose.
So i removed the intake, put everything right, then I could lower the back end of the intake deep like you showed on the video. I sprayed the hose tip with silicon grease and I managed to insert it finally.
did it fix your oil burning problem =?

I have done this repair once a year for the last 4 years because something always leaks or breaks 🤦🏼♂️.
It's THE WORST repair on this car. And I've rebuilt the entire engine 😂😂😂😂👌🏼
either “lost the clip” or cut off the only difficult parts of the process
Lol I will try to make another video and link it to this one.
BMW hate the home mechanic, I have done this job a few times you need baby sized hands with the strength of Hercules. Worth noting that these hoses become very brittle and also perish so jobs best done when air temperature isn't freezing.
Very true. I developed a way to use long needle nose pliers, in the perfect orientation to grab the hoses. They are actually impossible otherwise. The first time I just cut them off lol
@@buildanddrive did it yesterday got them all of, and when having the intake out i broke one of the hoses😂
Apparently you don't know what you're doing dude you have to hook the oil tube first then hook the other side to the intake it's a little bit tricky but you're find out, little patient.
Don't say he don't know what he is doing cause he does know his shit plus he a dam good mechanic look at his other video of him doing more engine work
Them birds smh they were saying replace the gaskets...
Comment of the month 😂😂😂😂
These hoses are a nightmare to connect, horrible job. I'd have gone for a catch can if I'd known how bad a job it is. Silicon spray on the connectors helps.
Thanks for the tip. These hoses are truly a nightmare.
you mean to connect them as you're reinstalling the manifold
Can we talk.
getting dizzy watching this :/
You and me both. Getting dizzy how many times i've taken out the CCV to check its working...
Now you know why the Russians whipped their butts with the T-34 tank.
What pile of shit design these BMWS are titled with. Must be all the engineers work drunk. These cars are really cheaply made w shit plastic every where . 🤦🏼♂️ but they sure are nice looking.
Plastic does wear and break. It is annoying
