The Omega Man (1971) - Ron Grainer Score (Selected Tracks)

  • Here are three selected tracks from the Ron Grainer score to the 1971 film THE OMEGA MAN. Included are tracks 1 and 2 (the main theme). I have also included track number 16 as it is one of my favorites. In fact this track is just over 7 minutes long itself and features a variety of different cues from the film so it really gives you a sense of the score as a whole.
    Please Enjoy!

The beauty of this theme is that it perfectly emotes the loneliness of the main character. Alone in a crowd of the undead. Very reminiscent of the cellphone culture we have today.

I thought the music, while amazing, never fit the premise of the movie. It sounds relatively at peace and unconcerned with the disaster of the earth, he's running around with submachine guns and grenading people dressed as witches and the grim reaper and it's playing this strange "exploratory scene change" music.
It's a great soundtrack don't get me wrong though. I immediately added it to my list of OSTs when I watched the movie with my dad a few days ago

Ron Granier's score captures perfectly the melancholy, the desperation, and the heroism of this movie. In just the first few bars of the opening title music, you know what the movie is about. Back in the early 70's, movie soundtracks were a rare item. Only issued for the most epic productions. The soundtrack for Omega Man was never released. So great that someone went through all the effort to finally release it.

The Omega Man's storyline took place during a time of real political events, the year 1971. Increasing political friction between the Soviet Union and its former client state and erstwhile ally, Red China, almost led to war several times. But in the movie's timeline of early 1971, things spiral out of control, leading to a full-out Sino-Soviet war that grows into a world war. The USA struggles to remain outside the conflict, risking becoming an enemy to both sides. It doesn't help as one side or the other introduces bacteriological warfare which infects the U.S., killing off more than 90% of the population.

I used to feel that way when I first saw the movie, many years ago. Interestingly, when I watch it now and he pulls back the covers in the hotel scene to reveal the husband and wife that died in bed together years before....I would rather my spouse and I be them, rather than have to put up with trying to survive a nightmare and have only myself to talk to. At least we would die together. What Neville did is not living. For what? For 20 or so years of roaming an empty city, surrounded by the corpses of a past life that is gone forever and constant reminders of when the world went to shit? And always having to search for food while watching your back? No thanks.

Wonderful score. One of my all-time favourites. As others have said, there's something very poignant and wistful about it which totally fits with the "Last Man on Earth" vibe of the film. Once you notice it, there are some definite similarities with the soundtrack to "The Prisoner" (the Patrick McGoohan TV series) which Grainer also composed, a few years before this. And he's also the chap who composed the iconic "Doctor Who" theme, although he composed it for conventional instruments and it was "electronically realised" by Delia Derbyshire, so the startling (for 1963) end result was a joint effort really.

Quite underrated movie....been panned by all the typical "Critics" of the day, most of whom would not know a good movie or great acting if it fell on them. This iteration of Richard Matheson's book "I am Legend" I found to be the best, simply because the acting was the finest among the headliners of the cast. Forget the late 1960s-early 1970s hokum that is usually considered in rating this film, you can't fault a movie for the times in which it was made...or the Zeitgeist of those times. Heston was great, as always. I was fortunate enough to actually meet met the man in 2000 in Cleveland GA during the Bush/Gore Presidential Election, as he was winding down his presidency of the NRA at that time. Amazingly personable and approachable man. he was genuine, and in this movie, his real character is there, imprinted on the stage character of Dr. Robert Neville. Before massive CGI epics where acting now takes a back seat to the work of digital whiz kids, this movie is carried by high class performances of Charlton Heston, Rosalind Cash, and NOT to be forgotten, the superior, and iconic performance for this cult classic, of none other than Anthony Zerbe as Johnathan Mathias, the chief antagonist of Dr. Neville. Supporting it all was Ron Grainer's haunting soundtrack, certainly one of the most memorable in this film genre, a score rife with powerful selections eliciting deep emotive responses throughout the entire screenplay, the music itself a work of high art. Powerful and moving, that's the substance of a GOOD movie, and in my estimation, this bit of Cinema is among the best ever made of the possible apocalyptic world that awaits us all if the hair trigger of state sponsored insanity ever gains ultimate primacy in the affairs of man.

FulciLives: thanks so much for posting this! I was 16 back in 1971 and the impression this movie made on me then is still with me: being the last person on earth enjoying everything left behind, while fighting-off crazed zombies at night!
Can you post the track where Neville and Lisa are together, and the generator shuts off. While Neville works desperately to get it started again, one of the Family climbs up to the penthouse? There are some great cues I still remember from that music.

They were going to use 'Everybody's our of Town' by B J Thomas, instead of 'Summer Place' at the beginning of the movie....I kid you not.

Charlton Heston was famous for his dying sceens in movies. but when he died in
this movie a piece of me died with him. PS the family also scared the shit out of me.
this is one of the best movies i have ever seen and the soundtrack. i love it.

Really superb, terrific score by the great Ron Grainer. I feel The Omega Man was a vastly underrated movie which should have garnered far more plaudits; Charlton Heston and Rosalind Cash paired nicely, with Anthony Zerbe's splendidly sinister performance as Matthias. Very nice.

The score has been released twice on CD. The first release is now out-of-print but the second release is still available and frankly was the better release anyway (although I believe the first one has one track that is mixed differently and not on the second release). Anyway the 2nd one is called: THE OMEGA MAN 2.0 UNLIMITED

You are correct. Shortly after Fulci died the (now diseased himself) Chas Balun wrote a small tribute book in which he coined the phrase FULCI LIVES ... meaning of course that while he is gone, he will still live on through his films. In fact the book came with a bumper sticker with that catch phrase (and the ZOMBIE head from the ZOMBIE movie poster)

Now that we have the complete original soundtrack in true stereo, why has Warner refused to remaster the film with it? They've redone al their otger classics -- Exorcist, Clockwork Orange, even Blazing Saddles in glorious 5.1 surround. But Omega Man remains in plain old, flat mono.

It is identified on the soundtrack as being Max Steiner's A SUMMER PLACE although I assume Ron Grainer did this "lounge music" take on it (as you call it). I included it because it's the first piece of music heard in the film and so it is very iconic to anyone who has seen the film. However this collection of tracks is over 12 minutes and A SUMMER PLACE is under 2 minutes as presented here.
