The Omega Man - Digitally edited

  • Firstly, this isn't a comedy or parody video as you're no doubt used to seeing from me; this time I have used my talents to fix something.
The Omega Man is a great 1971 movie starring Charlton Heston.
I've digitally edited out some of the passers by and vehicles to make the protagonist seem more alone.
I wonder... I might "repair" other movie scenes in the future... this has been hard work, but quite rewarding.

Believe me back in 71 when I was 10 years old and saw this on the HUGE screen at the theater nobody noticed these things, overall they did a good job of making the city look deserted. One of my favorite movies.

Yeah back then you weren't able to rewatch and scrutinize the images. I first saw OM back in the 70's and didn't notice this stuff until 30+ years later when I had a DVD copy. Some of the red lights I never noticed.

Also saw this film at age 10 during late summer of '71, at a DTLA movie theater! I remember it felt sort of creepy seeing the very same streets where filming had taken place. Immediately recognized Main and Spring Streets. The near completed twin ARCO and Bank of America towers were finally completed in 1972.

It took me 15 years of watching and rewatching this film to actually notice anything. Heston eluded to, in a few interviews, that the filming was difficult for a variety of reasons. I can imagine the headache involved with studio production wanting certain scenes and the director asking the crew “Are you sure everyone is off the damn freeway?” It adds to the lore of the movie. Still my favorite adaptation of I Am Legend even if it’s in concept/name only.
Great editing on this. You did what WB was too lazy to do. Thanks for helping restore, preserve, and promote an amazing part of film history!

I read somewhere that originally Omega Man was supposed to end with him getting away, but Heston suggested to the director that he die at the end as it would make "a bigger impact". Not sure if true but several of Heston's movies end badly and they definitely left a "bigger impact" on me.

Great work, but the traffic lights would have been on an autonomous battery system in 1971 to 1975 which would have continued for years, decades, without maintenance. They had their own battery stored grid system as they have today. The lights would have kept going in mathematical sequence. The rest is great, though. The cars and people that most viewers never notice unless someone with a clearer print, such as a new 4k/8k HD disk, might see while those who only saw the film in theaters or on low-resolution television broadcast might not. Very well done!!

Awesome job! The elephant in the room, however, is the smog visible all over the city. A city void of humanity would not be smoggy. After living in LA for several years, i can confirm that there are rare days in LA when the air sparkles. Its incredibly beautiful to see , especially with the crisp view of the nearby mountains. 1970’s LA was notoriously smoggy, so I guess they had to just pretend brown air is normal. Lol

The one most damning evidence of human activity in Los Angeles is its smog, which is unfortunately ever-visible, and even in today's digital world very difficult to remove. If somehow it could have been removed, optically, in 1971, it would have made a potent statement for the film, given that the Clean Air Act had only been passed the previous year. But good hunting!

It is pretty amazing that they did as good as they did back then. I am sure if they new about future technology they wish they had you to drop in from the future! Now you have made it perfect! But it is interesting, because this film looks a lot more real than all the movies today; their computer generated special effects animation really looks fake. Could you add one more? The one that really bothers me is the helicopter scene where Heston is overcome and crashes. If memory serves, I can recall seeing the glass bubble reflecting the ground and nearby trees, when Neville is supposed to be flying high in the sky. That one was pretty bad. I am surprised that they didn't see it in the rushes! This was fun to watch! Thanks!

Now if you could just get the edited scenes included in the actual DVD-downloadable versions of the movie, we'd be on to something. SERIOUSLY: why can't whoever owns the copyright to the movie spend a tiny amount of money delete the gd traffic lights, pedestrians, etc which are visible at the start of the movie? The technology to do so today is dirt cheap to use. Would make THE OMEGA MAN's opening three minutes even more memorable than Will Smith's first three minutes in I AM LEGEND...

I certainly don't take away from the effort but this at least to me shows how much a good director, cinematographer and editor do (or, perhaps more accurate given today's "post" tech, had to do) amounts to sleight-of-hand, especially with those Veeeeeeerrrrrrry Looooooonnnnnnng Shots (EXT.). Put another way, what do you pay attention to up there on The Big Screen, especially on first viewing? The purposive action. And note in some of those action shots there are at least two simultaneous perspectives (e.g., the rear view mirror and the reflections on the windscreen). Tricky to get right no matter how hard you try.

For example in the opening scenes when Neville stops to shoot at a hooded figure inside a building, his red jerry can is clearly visible before he shoots, in the back seat. After shooting he drives away, and the jerry can has disappeared. A minute later when he crashes his car, the jerry can has reappeared, but it has turned around and is lying against the back of the rear seat.

Great job, but you really need to upload this in 1080p.
The other issue this film has is the mono soundtrack. The awesome soundtrack needs to be heard in stereo.

Well you easily prove it could be done, and high quality too. When re-released in 8k your edited scenes will make the cuts. Do you think Charlton Heston even noticed? Remember Erie Scream in studio background recording rollercoaster single Supposedly ChiCk gettIng killed in Other room...Not.
Even back then Hollywood special effects team had capability to dowse stop lights. Which goes to show you laziness still earned a paycheck.
Indeed I thought to myself back then what a monumental task. What day and time can possibly be the best to catch such a busy City totally lifeless? No buses Running? Lousy public transportation service anyways in calli no?
Imagine paying extras to intentionally stay out of scene. I guess it could have been a lot More blatantly worse.
I would have been the pain in the ass listening to production teams scanner frequency back then. Lighting off a smoke bomb or skyrocket or two. Streaking with no clothes on in the background. Letting a few helium balloons or flock of pigeons loose. Then for next thousand years my ancestors could say look at your Asshole great great grandfather. Hey I just of something, Maybe why they played soundtrack to cover over ambient city noise like horns SirensDiesel locomotives.
Today not even peak of mandatory coronavirus shut down Could have made producers wish come true. Even somehow using still background picture would have required citywide electrical blackout.
