Any fight scene featuring a chick in hand to hand combat will always be "bad" IMO. Just because of the suspension of reality/ belief one has to do. I mean maybe if the chick has a weapon like a knife it's better... I'm thinking of Rebecca Ferguson in her first mission impossible film where she fights that dude towards the end of the film. Outside of something like that it's just way too hard for me to believe a 120 lb or less chick can kick a 6'+ tall 200q lb man's ass.
Before you ladies get all butthurt because you hate biology.... if it makes you feel any better it also blows my mind how one can let himself get his ass kicked and mauled by a fucking dog. I mean a BIG dog is like the size of a small (these days) woman... 100-120 lbs. Unlike a woman though dogs really don't have and arms... just teeth to worry about. A dog lunges at you I don't know why a dude wouldn't either uppercut the thing into oblivion or hammer punch it to hell while it's in mid air... it literally can't block a punch as it has no hands or elbows. Not to mention it would be easy to catch mid air and then just body slam yourself on top of likely killing it instantly certainly incapacitating it as you likely broke all it's ribs and punctured both it's lungs. Or... you know... just punt the damn dog like it's a 70 yard field goal try in yr super bowl.
Bottom line.... it blows my mind how one can let a dog kick your ass.... more so than Hollywood casting a

One of the genius things about the Fallout bathroom fight is it's over before it begins - or so you think. Hunt goes in with the knockout shot, gets owned, then Walker floors the guy with the case. Fight done. None of it is telegraphed. You forget what's in the case until it comes to them trying to make the mask in the stall. I never felt that it was *truly* pretentious *because* of the fact that it was silly and not taking itself too seriously. I think the enjoyment in John Wick fight scenes after the first one, and definitely after the second one, is just the creativity and the spectacle of it.
100% the guy is wearing more plot armour than most bad shows and films I've seen, but the fights are so creative and enjoyable to watch, that you still do love every second of it. each fight feels different, with a wide array of weapons and locations to keep things fresh.
by no means do I think that makes it flawless, because you can do all these things and have the stakes than John Wick doesn't seem to have. if the Wick series' fights weren't so good, those movies would suck ass.
it's pretty superficial, but it is just the spectacle of it all. switch your brain off and watch the invincible man take out countless foes in new ways every time.

He is having an existential breakdown, sobbing, not understanding what is going on, whilst at the same time he is clinically destroying an assailant. Kill Bill movies, Mad Max: Fury Road, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Casino Royale are movies with excellent fight scenes.
There are a few ingredients that make a good fight scene: physics (within the context of the movie), choreography, camera work and stakes.
And I don't know what it's called but when they're able to show us the layout of the scene so you know where everyone and everything is and the environment they're in, and when the characters are causing chaos throughout the scene these elements get disturbed in a really fun and engaging way.
Few movies do it well. That's why I was so shocked at Fury Road and Furiosa. They have so many cars, so many characters but they all have their own little purpose for being in the scene and you can pinpoint the positions of everything at any given time. You can see the big picture, follow the action and feel for the characters at the same time. And there's no lingering questions afterwards like "where'd that guy come from?" or "why didn't he just shoot instead of coming closer so the main guy can disarm him?" Or any questions you might have can be easily answered after a rewatch. Seriously anyone trying to make an action movie needs to dissect everything in Fury Road. It's basically one big chase scene with small moments in between. And you'd see layers upon layers of thought put into every single frame.

I know you have a no guns thing, but the _Atomic Blonde_ scene has them, and with that in mind I'd say the Red Circle fight from the first _John Wick_ is worth considering. Because of how the fight is structured, gunplay and grappling go hand in hand and because Wick is getting mobbed by dudes from all sides he's basically always in physical contact with one bad guy even while he's shooting at others, and because he ends up killing so many of the basic mooks in the runup to the final confrontation, by the time he's killed the club's head of security, he's out of ammo, so we get a very quick, very brutal confrontation between Wick and Kiril, the antagonist's chief body guard. Wick starts off with the upper hand in an ambush, but Kiril quickly turns the tables on him, stabs him, and throws him off a balcony, handily winning the fight in a very short time. Kiril wins all three fights he has with Wick, only losing their final encounter thanks to external intervention, a sign of a good antagonist.

I loved the fallout fight too but these style of fights can sometimes come across as a little bit choreographed for me. I see them as enjoyable and exciting but lacking any real danger whereas in Bourne you genuinely feel that these are two people fighting for their lives and will do anything to kill the other. Its a different feel. I also think what's happening in the fight is quite clear despite the quick cutting. Both are great fights, just different. I'd also add the fight in the lift in Captain America Winter Soldier and the all female showdown in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon as ones that stand out for me.

The choreography is superb, even the story told is good in a vacuum, however, big part of the franchise has always been fight scenes and you will struggle to find a scene where Tom actually loses a fist fight. It pains me that something up in the air like him losing a fight is thrown away for a character that hadn't shown up ever and will never appear again, I dont even remember the name of the character, he just shows up, beats up the main characters 2 on 1 and dies. It could paint the story of the main character falling off his game, something that actually seemed to me like it was during the first half of the movie, I even thought that was the name of the movie Fallout meant. But it's brushed aside quickly and never mentioned again. I really hate that scene!

Consider this: the new generation of action stars (the Rock, Vin Diesel, Statham, etc.) almost never show their characters getting the absolute piss beat out of them. I think a few of have a clause in their contracts about never laying or sitting on the ground in front of an opponent--in a vulnerable position--which makes it difficult to ultimately root for them.
Tom Cruise and the old guard (Willis, Stallone, Arnold, etc.) never shied away from getting beaten and shot to a pulp. That's what makes their characters so endearing, even if they never really "lose" a fight. The earn the win.

Also people always ignore how important writing is in creating a good set piece. Its what I’ve always loved about James Bond action scenes, they have a clear arc, progression, setup and pay off to EVERY thing, in Bond films the protagonist has to be clever to survive and beat his enemies, not just a ‘stronger/better fighter’.

Anton Chigurgh vs Llwellyn Moss, in the hotel, No Country for Old Men. Probably my #1 favorite action sequence of all time. That's what real gunfighting is. A dirty game of cat and mouse. No rules, no law, no code of conduct. Just two men doing everything in their power to kill the other, imagining what they would do, if they were standing in the other's shoes. We see the scene primarily from Llewellyn's perspective, but we can still reasonably infer what Chigurgh must be doing, based on what Llewellyn is doing, where he's looking, and how/when he chooses to move. Not only a masterclass performance in acting from Josh Brolin. but a masterclass in screenplay writing from the Coen Brothers. No music required. All the suspense comes from your heart beating a mile a minute, wondering who's going to come out on top. Absolutely brilliant filmmaking. No Country for Old Men is one of the best films ever made!

Hero is one of the most beautiful movies made. The surreal combat, the wuxia fantasy, the nature of the plot, and the 3 lessons that are taught by each master is just priceless.

Thank you for addressing the shaky camera in fights!!! I so hate this and I feel it is lazy cinematography!!! We also see this in action scenes involving car chases and jet fighters but we are taking about fight scenes here. Too many directors don't employ good stunt coordinators to train and film a good fight scene in modern movies. But in the old days, some to the best fight scenes that were shown on television (though they were movies) were the Kung Fu flicks that used to come on TV at 3:00PM on Saturdays (Fen X'ers from NYC know what I am talking about). One of the best fight choreography for a film is Shaolin vs. Lama! The camera work and fighting in every single fight was intense and BRUTAL!!! But very believable and entertaining. And with mentioning of the editing to close in on the character, quick cuts and shake the camera, that technique always made me sick and lose interest. Even in many anime/animation fights (Ninja Scroll, Street Fighter 2, Fight of the NorthStar, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, The Dark Knight Returns) all had FANTASTIC fight scenes that felt real and watchable! In closing, I thank you for this video and the lesson. New Subscriber signing in! Take care!

The 3 table fights from Ip man 2 are so incredible. The compact space and balancing act make for excellent close quarters, and it really feels awkward and closed in.

Didn't see part 1, but the intro actually showed the movie I was hoping for, so I'm guessing it was in part 1. I'm sold. Watching the rest.

Fun and interesting analysis and selections. It would be interesting if a fight scene from one of the comical 'Bud Spencer & Terence Hill' movies of the seventies could find a place in further volumes, though they probable for a category all of their own)... 🤔
(For instance one of the climatic fight scenes from either 'Trinity' films, the marketplace fight from 'The Two Missionaries' or the 'gym' scene from 'Watch Out, We're Mad'...)

Would love to see you analyze a very corny (but rather cool) movie called Ninja Assasin. While over the top, I very much enjoyed some of the fights scenes

The biggest issue with most fights is that they look choreographed. You can see people in the background standing there waiting for their cue.

The scene from Saving Private Ryan was gut-wrenching. I remember the first time I saw it. I had to have been 15 years old and really just... it scared me.

That hip throw reversal coming out of the bathroom stall was so good. I'm a beginner in judo, but ive seen some of the guys who know what they're doing pull off cool stuff like that so it's realistic, and awesome.

I always loved the M:I series, but Christopher McQuarrie was the best thing that could've happened to the franchise. I think all three of his M:I movies are absolute bangers, with Rogue Nation being my favorite.

thank god there are people who appreciate grounded fighting but also understand that fight scenes are an art form. Too many "that's not realistic" people
