Today, the Church celebrates the feast of Saint Margaret of Scotland, a queen whose life was marked by profound charity, humility, and devotion to both her family and her kingdom. Born around 1045 in Hungary, Margaret was the daughter of Edward the Exile, an heir to the Anglo-Saxon throne of England, and Princess Agatha of Hungary. Her early life was spent in exile, but she was raised in a deeply Christian household that instilled in her a love for the faith and a spirit of compassion.
After the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, Margaret's family fled to Scotland, where she eventually married King Malcolm III in 1070. This marriage not only united two dynasties but also allowed Margaret to profoundly influence Scotland's spiritual and cultural life.
A Queen with a Heart for Her People
Saint Margaret is widely known for her tireless efforts to reform the Church in Scotland, bringing it in line with Roman practices. She encouraged the proper observance of Lent, improved the clergy’s education, and supported the construction of churches, including Dunfermline Abbey, which became a spiritual centre for the kingdom.
Margaret’s heart for the poor was unmatched. She often served meals to the needy with her own hands, even washing their feet in a gesture of humility. She opened the royal treasury to provide for those in need and ensured that orphans and widows were cared for. Lesser-known details reveal that Margaret would rise early each morning for prayer and attend Mass regularly, often fasting and offering her personal penance for the well-being of her kingdom.
Her intellect and dedication also extended to her family. Margaret was deeply involved in the education of her eight children, teaching them the values of faith, charity, and leadership. Notably, three of her sons, including King David I, would follow in her footsteps, leaving their own mark on the Church and their people.
Known for Her Spiritual Wisdom
Margaret's life was deeply rooted in prayer. Although no direct quotes from her survive, her actions speak volumes about her faith. Her contemporaries noted her unwavering trust in God and her commitment to living out Christ’s teachings.
Saint Margaret’s last years were marked by suffering. She lost her husband, King Malcolm, and one of her sons in battle in 1093. Just days later, she herself passed away, her strength broken by grief and illness. She was canonised in 1250 by Pope Innocent IV, and she remains a model of leadership, charity, and holiness.
