Great tutorial, but I have a problem at 40:57, once I parent the leg to the hip in Edit mode and switch to Pose Mode, all the bones are in completely random positions and rotations? Any tips?
@@LS_Val Uh it was a while ago and can't access my computer right now, but if i remember correctly, it's because the IKs, (the left leg I'm pretty sure) needs to have it's value changed for the number of bones it affects (I'm sorry i don't remember the name of that value at all, but it should be 0 by default and that messed up everything for me). Let me know if that worked, took me forever to fix that...
Ryan when you name every part of the UI that you use as you construct your tutorial model it enables me to listen and follow along in Blender at the same time without having to flip back and forth between Blender and RUclips ( I travel with only a single monitor). This is very rare on RUclips most of the other channels the host will say "click on this, then over here click that option, then back to this one then back over here" which loses me completely and I have to tab back into youtube and rewind and see what part of blender they are referring too. Which is very frustrating and tedious. So from all the single monitor users (and possibly some blind blender users) thanks for taking the time to name the parts of the UI you are clicking on.
RYAN! Your tutorials are still the best! Why? Because so many tutorials say press this or add that without context. You take the time to explain why! For example "off set" vs "connected" and you explain the difference and that makes the difference! And you do it in so many tutorials all the time! Instead of just saying which thing to choose like a Polyjford tutorial (which are great but i don't feel i actually learn anything vs make something cool). Please keep making tutorials. You my go to guy. Bonus: You also speak to your people. Just a few tutorials you had to explain why you delete the cube and add a new cube. I didn't know the joke.
Just to point out that if the bone is moving out of the mesh when applying the bone constraint called "Copy Rotation". You can use "G" key to grab and rotate the individual bone that is moving out of the mesh. G is to rotate not to move in this instance, this has to be done in the "Pose mode". But, the yellow bone such as the "Arm L" bone and the "Ankle bone L". These bones after adding the "Inverse Kinematic" bone constraint, it can only rotate on certain axis only. For example the "Arm L" cannot rotate around y axis. (Y is the depth of the camera). to adjust these "yellow bones" you need to reposition it in the edit mode itself. After satisfy with the position of the bone in the mesh, press ctrl + a to apply , then choose set at rest position in "Pose mode".
you explain everything so well and are so helpful, ive come back to this vid a few times to rig characters and its always so helpful and easy to follow, thank you!!!!!

For anyone having trouble selecting ur bones in pose mode, there is a bug that happens from having the [In Front] option checked under object data properties (green guy running)>viewport display in both object and pose mode. Deselect from at least one of those modes and u should be able to reselect bones in pose mode.
look in the top left corner of the screen, there should be a button that says edit next to file. click edit and check if "lock object modes" is checked. if it is, uncheck it then go back to weight paint mode and hold ctrl and click the bone, then it should work

Love your teaching style. Thank you for these videos. I have a question though. When I hit CTRL-ALT-S, I don't get the scaling just visually, that's the save incrementally shortcut, which I've deleted that shortcut, but still doesn't do the scaling. I'm on 4.0.1. Any suggestions? Google search hasn't gotten me anywhere. Thanks again.
It appears the shortcut is now Shift + Control + Alt + S. Ran into this issue too. I found what I think is the option by hitting F3 and finding the "Scale B-Bone" option. That seemed to accomplish what that shortcut used to. I found its shortcut by adding it to the Quick Favorites menu. Once I added it to the menu, going to my Quick Favorites showed the new keyboard shortcut next to that particular action. From going through this tutorial, it seems Blender changed up a number of keyboard shortcuts. For instance, Alt + P doesn't seem to bring up parent options, either.
@Topcatyo. Thanks for that, I'll have to check it out. Do you know if that's only if you use the B-bone option? I generally use the stick so it's easier to choose bones when they're close together. Maybe I need to switch. But I found using collections, then click to show only the IK bones (or whatever you name the collection) makes it much easier to select them.
@@paulm1835 I can't speak with too much authority on that since I'm just a newbie to Blender myself, but from what I can tell that shortcut works specifically for B-Bones. Octahedral bones seem to scale like any other object in Blender with just the S key (make sure you scale locally), and I couldn't get any of the other bone types to scale in any way other than lengthening them.
@@paulm1835 Scaling Octahedral bones only works off the Z axis though? I dunno, I wish I could be more helpful, I keep learning different funky things about it as I test things out.
For anyone new trying to scale the bone density, the new default hotkey is ctrl+alt+shift+s Yes, I now have 200 versions of the same blend file before I figured out how to fix it.
I had to press control+click to select the bones when weight painting, might have changed in a newer version? Thanks for this tutorial, you're a great teacher!
I can’t believe how well this worked. I was skeptical because I was certain I’d mess up somewhere along the way that would cause my mesh to be deformed and I would have to figure out the problem and fix it, but your directions were so clear that I was able to pose my character right out of the box. Thanks so much!
Hey, thanks for this awesome tutorial, super easy to follow and very clear!! I just have a lil problem, at the end, after I rig the mesh to the bones, the shoulders twist themselves...seems to be caused by the rotation applied on the wrist bone earlier, but if I try to fix it the arm just bend on the wrong side...have any idea how to fix that?😢
I love the way Ryan explains stuff in his tutorials. he does not fail to explain a single detail. Definitely a mandatory like and subscribe for anyone who stumbles on any of his videos..i actually prefer him to blender guru... he's gotten too greedy and gone full commercial, so everything he does feels like a sales pitch now, i like old blender guru. But Ryan here, he does it out of actual goodness , you can tell, that is why if i have an extra penny i try to support him rather than other more "main stream" blender guys. I just hope he doesnt end up like a total sales pitch for "his new book" or "his new class" or the tools he uses and all that stuff. Ryan, if you keep it Vanilla brother, the newbies like myself will always have someone to go to to start, try not to change that style man. it is perfect.
Whenever I symmetrize my Left side, It just appears in front of it and is flipped. SO i tried rotating it and putting it on the right side of the model. But when I put it together with the character, it glitched out and it didn't move properly. Anyone who can help?
For anyone looking through the comments for answers on this, I found this on the Blender Stackexchange: The symmetrize operation will happen on the Y local axis, your armature is not correctly oriented. You should also align your armature to the Global front view. So in Object mode, rotate your armature 90° on the Z axis, apply its scale and rotation and symmetrize again.
For anyone struggling. You can re-parent bones in edit mode if necessary. It'll save some time repositioning. It's the last menu: "Bone Properties" to "Relations". Parenting hiarchy works like a list in reverse. (Though if you've come this far that's probably obvious.)
Just an issue I was faced with and it took me too long to realize what's happening; If you switch from Edit mode to pose mode or switch from pose position to rest position and your entire armature gets displaced, scaled and rotated (so it doesn't line up with the mesh anymore) all you have to do is press Alt+R/Alt+G and Alt+S.
Something is not working. when i did this for my godzilla model im trying to rig, i put the weight paint on and it acts like its already moved. so lets say i start paint, the objects mesh im painting moves to a different part. I haven't touched the pose mode, but when i do, I always hit Alt G, and Alt R. what am i doing wrong?

@@Topcatyo. same here, I just got into rigging within the last month or so. Regardless, I appreciate the comments and thoughts 👍
I love you tutorial, very thanks man!!
Glad it helped!
For anyone new trying to scale the bone density, the new default hotkey is ctrl+alt+shift+s
Yes, I now have 200 versions of the same blend file before I figured out how to fix it.
I had to press control+click to select the bones when weight painting, might have changed in a newer version? Thanks for this tutorial, you're a great teacher!
Oh sorry, that's because I use the right click select, but most people use the left click select. so yeah, use Control + click.
i was looking for half an hour for this haha
I can’t believe how well this worked. I was skeptical because I was certain I’d mess up somewhere along the way that would cause my mesh to be deformed and I would have to figure out the problem and fix it, but your directions were so clear that I was able to pose my character right out of the box. Thanks so much!
glad it helped!
I was not so lucky
You’re so underrated. Now i know how to make an animatronic with fur that bends!
cool, thanks for watching!
Note for using Blender 4.0: selecting bones for weight painting now uses Ctrl Shift click.
Also, this is a great tutorial :-D
Thanks for the tip!
Wow very easy to understand with your explanation. Even tried some animation at the end. Thank you very much!
Thanks for watching!
this is awesome, great explanation
Thank you!
When I add the bones at 2:34 , it doesn’t show the options. What’s up with that?
Easy to follow and super useful! I'm transitioning to Blender after my Maya student license expired, this is a big help!
glad its helpful!
Thanks so much! glad you like my videos. and thanks for the tips. 👍
100% best tutorial of this subject on youtube
thanks!
Thank you very much for this lesson !!!
You are welcome!
Whenever I symmetrize my Left side, It just appears in front of it and is flipped. SO i tried rotating it and putting it on the right side of the model. But when I put it together with the character, it glitched out and it didn't move properly. Anyone who can help?
For anyone looking through the comments for answers on this, I found this on the Blender Stackexchange:
The symmetrize operation will happen on the Y local axis, your armature is not correctly oriented. You should also align your armature to the Global front view. So in Object mode, rotate your armature 90° on the Z axis, apply its scale and rotation and symmetrize again.
Thank you! This was very helpful! I especially liked the tip about reversing grabs, rotations, and scales!
Glad it was helpful!
For anyone struggling. You can re-parent bones in edit mode if necessary.
It'll save some time repositioning. It's the last menu: "Bone Properties" to "Relations".
Parenting hiarchy works like a list in reverse. (Though if you've come this far that's probably obvious.)
thanks 👍
CTRL+ATL+S DOES't WORK TO CONTROL SCALE IS THERE ANOTHER WAY TO DO THAT ? THANKS
I think the shortcut key was changed in the new Blender version.
In Blender Version 4.0 the Shortcut Key was Changed. To Scale the Viewport Size of the B-Bone, you need to Press: Shift+Control+Alt+S
@@RyanKingArt yes it works... thank you ^^^
Just an issue I was faced with and it took me too long to realize what's happening; If you switch from Edit mode to pose mode or switch from pose position to rest position and your entire armature gets displaced, scaled and rotated (so it doesn't line up with the mesh anymore) all you have to do is press Alt+R/Alt+G and Alt+S.
it isnt doing anything on my rig 😭
Thank you so much for the detailed tutorials. For a beginner, this video is really helpful because you explained everything needed. 👏
Glad it was helpful! 👍 thanks for watching!
at 18:32 you have to click ctrl(command if you use mac)+shift and then click to select the bone while weight painting.
06:02 When I press (ctrl alt s) it saves the file... What is the solution please?
I love your pace and how you repeat things rather than going slow. Helps me learn. Subbed
glad it helped! thanks for watching!
Great video!!
Thanks!
Thank you so much, for explaining in detail about Ik . thank you so much once again
thanks for watching!
You're a great teacher. Thanks a lot!
thanks!
Thanks for your detailed tutorials.
Could you make a tutorial about rigify plugin?
Thanks for the video idea. Maybe I can do a video on that sometime.
Something is not working. when i did this for my godzilla model im trying to rig, i put the weight paint on and it acts like its already moved. so lets say i start paint, the objects mesh im painting moves to a different part. I haven't touched the pose mode, but when i do, I always hit Alt G, and Alt R. what am i doing wrong?
it was great for selfstudy thanks a lot
You're welcome!
thank you i love you work !!!! ❣
glad you like it!
This is exactly the kind of tutorial I was needed! Thank you so so much for putting for free on the youtube!
Glad it was helpful! thanks for watching. 👍
stellar tutorial man , thank you soo much!
You're welcome!
CTRL+ATL+S doesn't work for me, it only saves the file. Can you help?
Ahh I think in the new Blender version they changed the shortcut key. Maybe try looking it up online.
In Blender Version 4.0 the Shortcut Key was Changed. To Scale the Viewport Size of the B-Bone, you need to Press: Shift+Control+Alt+S
Finally! A good rigging tutorial on RUclips.
