Becker Was The Best Player Of This Generation (Lendl, Edberg, Wilander). He Had The Whole Package Of Shots, The Mental Strength In All Finals Against Lendl, A 25 To 10 Win Statistic Against Edberg And One Of His Best Matches Ever 1989 And A 7:3 Head To Head Against Wilander. Boris Also Had Special Shots Like "The Dive" And Others, His Big Service, Good Baseline-Play On Forehand And Back And A Very Good Serve And Volley Game. If He Was In The Zone, No One Of Them Could Stop Him.

Indeed, he was playing fantastic grass tennis in that match. I am convinced that were it not for the dodgy call at 1-2 / 0-15 in the 5th, if he kept serve he had a very good chance to win that match, and on that form the final against Edberg.

Ironically it was 89 loss at FO to Chang that gave Lendl extra prep time for W. This was his best W match ever and he was the only player to take a set from Becker in the 89 tournament.

The curse of Ivan Lendl was Wimbledon (he deserved to win at least one time The Championship). Unfortunately he faced Becker and Edberg and the big chance with Cash was not exploited.
At the same time Becker never won on clay and in particular the French Open. He had the great chance in 1989 but he was defeated by Edberg (I think if he had won probably he would had won the final with Chang because his play was more powerful than that of Edberg).

The rivalry between Becker and Lendl was very close. Lendl had a narrow win-loss edge over Becker, winning 11, losing 10. Becker on the other hand, beat Lendl three times at Wimbledon, once at the Australian Open, and once at the US Open. Lendl won 8 grand slams, Becker 6. Lendl played in 8 consecutive US Open Finals. In a space of 11 years, Becker played in 7 Wimbledon Finals.

Like you know this for a fact. This is sports. If Lendel couldn’t keep his momentum that’s not Beckers fault. Also no one can predict rain. And plenty of matches were interrupted with the already wining player actually winning the match. So in the end, it really doesn’t matter.

I still don't understand how Lendl lost this match. He played so well. Never lost focus. Becker had several down the middle aces and several difficult backhand passing shots. Perhaps if Lendl had stayed back to rally instead of serve and volley? But Becker wasn't allowing that. He went to net at every opportunity himself. Maybe if Lendl had changed raquet midway through last set, it could have helped. Who knows.

  • @amitmarathe232

Ivan in the beginning of the 3rd set was dominating the match. After the rain break he should have mixed it up more and kept Becker guessing. He could have stayed back on second serves and even some first serves, served more at the body of Boris. Also the sting in the serve could have been more given it was grass. Clearly Boris had a much stronger serve and that is always an advantage on grass and no wonder Lendl could not break him from 3-2 in the fourth set.

The consistent head movement after a point one.. as if he's pumping himself up.. didn't know he did so much of it!
Seems like a tick .. or some autistic thing.. same as with his pulling up of one of his shoulders sometimes.. as if he's not at ease.

Comparing the number of slams Lendl won in the 80s to those of Becker in the 80s is a joke because Becker played almost half the decade and Lendl played the whole decade. Lendl was surely the most consistent but Becker was the best among Lendl, Edberg, Mcenroe, Cash and Wilander. His head to head record against these players is a proof. He was too strong in the head to heads, only against Lendl its a close 10-11 (12-12 including exhibition matches) but he owned Lendl at grand slams.

@ppm120667 To say they did not affect the outcome of the match is not correct. Ivan lost all those points and that is what turned the match. Clearly biased umpiring. Also the momentum was with Ivan and thus to say rain delay benefitted both is also not right. Becker started serving much better post the rain delay..before that Lendl was breaking him at will and Becker was losing it in the mind. Also Ivan was a great front runner and it would have been very difficulty for. Becker to turn this around against a confident and marauding Lendl.

Yes- having watched that just now, I’d have to agree that that was probably the best that Lendl ever played on the Grass, and he was playing like a natural Grass Court king!
That Bad line call definitely cost him the Match, you could see it effect him clearly, Mentally after that it was a huge Mountain for him to climb again- he actually said it to the umpire when he appealed the call saying it was hard enough for him as it was, without the additional bad decisions going against him- Right there at the moment, Ivan Lendl lost that match!
What a shame, because prior to that he was playing beautiful attacking Grass Court Tennis, and definitely had Becker on the Ropes……
Ivan was feigned never to reach those heights again at Wimbledon!
