Incredible the density of spectators in the stands. There wasn't a place left. At the time I was a child, it was broadcast on one of the 3 public television channels in France. That Sunday, the audience was monumental.
@@kevinthunder3375 There was always commentary and commercials, this is just raw footage Roland Garros uploaded, likely because they can avoid copyright issues that way with broadcasters.
I was 16 and I idolized McEnroe. This match still breaks my heart. Those magnificent first two sets and then pure torture. Darn you, Lendl! So easy to contemplate the ifs after the fact, but McEnroe completely routed Connors at Wimbledon and nearly the same to Lendl at the U.S. Open. He could've had the Grand Slam in his wheelhouse if it wasn't for.....Lendl! :) Great match. Thank you for the video.
I was 9 at the time. I still occasionally rewatch it because o hated the rude and arrogant McEnroe. His sadness tastes so sweet even today, as he has indicated in interviews that he never got over it. And all that from two sets up, against an opponent who he was very dismissive about (“I have more talent in one finger than Lendl in his entire being”). Ahhh…!
@@patoconnor9600 It was a unique time in tennis history, with so many exciting players and naturally gifted artists around. Nastase, Connors, Borg, McEnroe, Mecir, Leconte, Edberg, Becker, Noah, Wilander, Cash, Korda, Stich..
To me, this and the 1984 US Open semifinal between McEnroe and Connors are the two best matches I have ever watched. I´m still sad for John, but on the other hand I´m grateful for the incredible match they both gave us that day.
@@fundhund62 yeah, exactly! But I feel McEnroe got somewhat of a revenge in that year's us open finals. Also, this match gave lendl much needed confidence as he went on to become one of the all time greats!
Lendl was like a heavyweight fighter. The longer the match went the better he got. You had to knock him out. When McEnroe lost the fourth set, he knew it was slipping away. Great match.
38 years and rewatching this match still causes pain!! I admire Lendl much more now than I did then. The guy worked his tail off to maximize the talent he had. That is incredibly admirable and I'm a fan of his now. Having said that, McEnroe played so astonishingly brilliant and then threw the match away. I had never seen all-court and serve and volley work like that on Roland Garros' slow red clay. And the clay was slower back then than it is now. To top it off, Mac was doing it against Ivan Lendl's massive power and consistency. McEnroe's failure to work as hard as Lendl, Borg, Connors, etc. started to bite him in the 3rd set , began to haunt him in set 4 and tortured him in the 5th set. Very sad and difficult to watch. Lendl was a great player due to being so intelligent about training and working hard, maybe even better than McEnroe. Their overall head to head record suggests that. However, on this day, before fatigue set in, John McEnroe was producing other worldly tennis on clay court's highest stage. Never seen tennis like that before on red clay! Were it not for temper outbursts that motivated Lendl and Mac's poor relative fitness to his opponent, he should have demolished Lendl in straight sets. It was almost unbelievable to see what he was doing to Lendl's game in the 1st 2.5 sets. The tennis was that superb. Considering the greatness of the opponent, I never saw serve and volley played like that again on slow red clay. There is certainly a life lesson for all athletes in this example........ work hard and shut your mouth:)
WRONG . McEnroe didnt throw the match away , Lendl WON the match because he was THE BETTER PLAYER on clay in general and THE BETTER PLAYER on clay that day . Beside this, McEnroe playing the double allowed him to be much more than simply fit to play 5 sets tennis the way he used to play , MC ENROE WAS FIT ENOUGH
Lendl had lost all four of his grand slam finals thus far. McEnroe was world number 1 and playing the best tennis of his career. When he went two sets up quite easily I bet nobody gave Lendl a chance.
I remember this... Lendl was my favorite player in that era. He was really the only player that had the passing shot for Mac. But Mac was supreme at the net as well.
Big Mac peaked, Ivan Lendl fought back and would not give in. An epic battle of two legends, a classic for the ages. I saw the match live on tv, it was a nerve wrecker.
Deep, sincere gratitude that this was posted, in this format, that is, the entire thing. Given the epic, seminal nature of this match, I have to note the generosity in that and thank you. This has turned out to be the treat of this mid-summer. Like many who have replied here, just the deepest of memories and impressions about this taut, compelling match. Would have been 30 at the time, but felt very much the young person in understanding what was happening, being somewhat new to tennis. Very impressionable, in other words, but sensing even then the this was a major clash. Lastly, to give a sense of how epic an encounter this was, for simply too, too many reasons to capture here, this match became the subject, the context for a really entertaining sports film called In the Realm of Perfection, which plums the considerable depths to all that was going on over these nearly four hours. Kind of an Art House treatment, but still very much a sports movie. A hearty recommend.
Thank you for posting this, one of the greatest tennis matches ever. I remember watching the NBC broadcast of this so well. To this day I cannot figure out how Johnny Mac let this one slip away after toying with Lendl in the first two sets, and by playing serve and volley on clay. People I knew who weren't even into tennis were talking about this match the following week.
I think McEnroe was winning. He lost his energy. He "gassed out", in modern terms. I was wanting for John McEnroe to win. He had all the artistry. Lendl and Borg , and even Connors had far more endurance for longer matches.
@@antonboludo8886 You"re all wrong! You have no idea, Lendl was predestined to win an era of 6-7 titles, in Roland Garos! Lendl's problem was his head! In an earlier Grand Slam final against Conners, after a clear 2 to 0 set lead, with the title in sight, he suddenly served from underneath and lost that final! This Head weakness was also visible against Chang! For Lendl, who had already been world champion 5 times by then, it was a milestone, because when he was seemingly hopelessly behind, he was finally able to play free and look at Becker, Sampras, Paris has never been the home of serve and volley players! If Lendl hadn't had this head problem, this wouldn't have been his first title, but 4-8! You could always see this in Wimbledon, easy in Queens (even with serve and volley) and the day after, bad in Wimbledon! ruclips.net/video/05s5Mx40O1c/видео.html
@@minoX6 Or perhaps you are young enough that you didn't see the era McEnroe played in where they used heavy tree branches, steel and aluminum to hit a tennis ball, with small heads on the racquet producing a tiny sweet spot and inferior strings.😎 Today's technology is so much better, lighter, and more accurate. The players can swing a racquet that's much lighter, has a huge sweet spot to produce a powerful stroke almost everywhere the ball hits on the racket, and strings that impart crazy amounts of spin that Force the ball to land in many times. None of this was easily attainable in the wooden racquet era. Especially the spin and the power. Add to that the fact that Roland Garros was slower prior to the mid-90s. Wimbledon, on the other hand, played much faster in McEnroe, Lendl, Borg era. The ball wouldn't bounce high (stayed low) and the bounce was very inconsistent due to the type of grass that they traditionally used. Now in this match, McEnroe had switched to a composite racquet the year before, but tennis was still very much in its traditional phase and the string technology still wasn't there. The racket he was using, while better than wood, does not compare to today's rackets in the least. And that my friend, is the rest of the story :-)
@@alexestrada1788 I agree with everything you said I just hated his guts he used to moan all the time and complain about everything and everyone. He was like a child and like to be the center of attention. He still has that attitude working for the bbc
God ! Here stand the greatest mach of the open era ! Mcenroe at his peak even more agnificent on clay... The day Lendl won even more than his first main title ... he won full deep respect . The end of the richest tennis period, before changes turned tennis in a more powerfull game. Thank you gentlemen :)
I don't think that anyone watching this match would have thought that they had in Ivan Lendl the blueprint for what tennis would become in the ensuing 40 years. The killer forehand, the oversized metal racquet, the emphasis on fitness and the marketing (flashy apparel with ads ), all of it in one single package in a guy with little on-court personality.
I found it weird at the end when Lendl went to his chair without even walking back onto court to receive more applause, and was instantly rushed by the press. I’m glad that doesn’t happen any more, give the man a moment at least to drink and savour his achievement.
Mcenroe’s game was amazing. Looks like his serve motion was very continuous (following years became slower) great volley. Love watching his game from the back, he stood so close to baseline , absorbed opponent’s power with great slice and his change of rythm jumping to the net with such audacity is truly unique. He was in very good shape . Those first two sets are remarkable and hace not seen such a dominant aggressive creative and graceful game in any other player. A Bob Dylan of tennis
He was at his peak here. He went 82-3 that year and yes, his game was so seductive. The grace and beauty of his serve and the impossibly crisp volleys (done all totally against the way it’s taught)...he was a maestro of the highest order.
Mac the knife at his peak in 1984. He went 84-3 that year, winning US Open and Wimbledon. Just couldn't finish off Lendl in that third set. He kept charging to the bitter end. Great stuff.
I was for Lendl till the end this is the match of my life I stood at tv no stop After that I played tennis against a wall of parking area for weeks imagining me Lendl than Mcnroe shot after shot
And if I remember correctly he voluntarily lost to some Indian dude during some summer US tournament only to have better rest for the upcoming US Open. At least he said so in an interview few years later. Ciao!
@@Stiffjab71 I mean he was unbeatable here for two sets. He also skipped the Australian Open, which was common among top players because back then it was held during the Christmas season. Chris Evert only attended the AO 6 times in her long career (but reached the final every time, winning twice). It's a really different game now. Federer's best season ratio was 81-4 and that wasn't even his best season.
@@Stiffjab71 Interesting, I remember that loss. It was to Vijay Armitraj (actor in Octopussy) at the ATP in Cincinnati inAugust, I forget which round. I recall thinking WTF??
McEnroe was best serve and volley player.Ivan Lendl was the best baseliner. They played many finals.Initially McEnroe was dominating (from 1981-1984).Afterwards (1985-1988) Lendl mastered McEnroe. Both are all time greats.
How the f*ck does this get 28 thumbs up? As Uncle Tony correctly says: Lendl beat McEnroe seven times in a row from 81 to 83. JUST GOOGLE IT! And - ffs - all you thumbsuppers - DO YOUR OWN FACT-CHECKING!
I was a 13yo kid who had been serious about tennis for a couple yrs and was a huge Lendl fan during this time. Mad Mac was in the middle of his dominance of tennis, so when he sprinted to a 2-0 lead, I was sad and thought about going outside to play…Mac was literally invincible during this era with his revolutionary net game. But I watched a little bit more…then more…and finally some more. It never felt possible that Lendl would win this match despite his comeback - there was the lingering feeling that Mac was simply too good at that time. Even until that last point, it felt like Lendl was always one bad play from doom…but then that last volley by Mac went wide. Nobody in that stadium could believe it…and nobody watching on TV could believe it either. Lendl had broken through with his first major…and beat the invincible Mad Mac after being down 2-0. I was a happy 13yo kid that day…
@Mr Shread Probably not as the truth is he was nowhere near Borg in the 5th...although that was yes, after having 0-30 on Borg's serve in game 1. From there Borg never lost a point on his own serve.
Lendl's movement on grass was oft-criticized but here on clay he was able to get around quite nimbly getting to many a short ball or drop shot. Conversely, McEnroe's ground strokes were less effective on a slower surface. He played lots of short(er) matches during that tournament losing only the one one set before the final. So it appears somehow if not conditioning but instead pacing or perhaps both made it increasingly a struggle as the match moved beyond the 3rd set. In other words, I think that McEnroe being two sets up and relatively easily said to himself I expect to end this in three and when that didn't happen and the games became longer and longer, it go into his head as to his ability to compete for 4 or more hours.
After so many consecutive losses against McEnroe, including some on clay, Lendl showed a lot of character to continue fighting when he trailed badly. McEnroe in 1984 had no problems handling Ivan's groundstrokes. Lendl needed his whole arsenal, including quite a few outstanding lobs, to get through this match. It was quite a physical test too. I wouldn't normally mention a chair umpire, but I thought he did a great job of controlling the crowd. He was right to refuse to check marks too.
@@richfaulkner1527 I am a Lendl fan all the way But McEnroe on 1984 was unstoppable. During the first 2 sets of the FO he dominated Ivan on his favorite surface. John won 4 tournaments in clay and was able to beat Ivan twice in clay. Great times for tennis.
1981 quarters and 1988 4th round were their other 2 matches at French Opens, so this was their 2nd clash, and what a great match this was, the year before Lendl finally won the US Open in 1985.
The most humble and subdued champion celebration I have ever seen. Not only did he win a slam, but it was his first ever after 4 final losses, yet he just ran to give a quick handshake and immediately sat down! No sobbing on the court. No throwing kisses to the crowd. Not even a single roar! And the press attacking him with mikes in his face immediately and not even giving him a second to breathe? Come on! Unfortunately, McEnroe was the exact opposite of Lendl, acting like a spoiled brat, who couldn't even get himself to clap once when Lendl got the trophy, refused to raise his runner-up prize for the cameras, and then took off the second Lendl finished his (once again) brief humble statement at the end.
1984, McEnroe was like from another planet. Lost only like 3 matches entire year, and before the final already won 42 straight. Lendl, on the other hand was already in a couple slam finals and even reached No.1, but by this point, he had reputation for being a choker and lost a slam final he should won (US open 1983 against Connors
Daniel Kriz absolutely nothing compared to breaking through Roger, Novak and Rafa.. That we still haven’t had a male GS champ born in the 90’s says it all.
Here is some stats. For this 1984 tournament the top seven seeds filled 7 of the 8 quarter-final positions. And 8 of the top 9 seeds filled the quarter-final positions. The top 4 seeds filled the semi-final positions. The 2 top seeds played the final. And it was the same 4 semi-finalists for both 1984 and 1985.
I watched this match at the time. I wasn't really a Mac fan then but i was supprting him as he was playing winderful tennis... until half way through the third set. Then it was a slow death. I'm sure John still thinks about this match often and sighs, very deeply.
If Lendl were given today’s raquet technology, he’d be a monster…Well, He’d be a monster in any given era…. McEnroe is one the all time most gifted players ever…
@@muzzupappa70 oN this I also agree.,.. In a recent awesome (2018?) televised get together with Wilander, Lendl, Becker, and McEnrone, that was said by one of the others and McEnroe quickly agreed.
McEnroe's 1984 win-loss record was 82-3, so there was no where to go but downhill. But yeah.... it was a steeper downhill than it should have been (and that's when I started to lose interest in watching tennis).

I like how they switch camera from a winning, awkwardly answering questions Lendl, to McEnroe, who sat on his chair, desapately holding his head after the tough loss.
Yes, and then just after that you see Mac stumble and Lendl nearly barf out the contents of that recently drunk water. It was a grueling match for both of them.
The difference in pace and power of yesteryears vs today is simply crazy. The improvement in rackets, strings, techniques, strategies and players physique has been incredible. Tennis as a sport has come a long way indeed.
I remember this match. Lendl clawed his way back into the match from love-40 on his serve in the third set and went on to win the match in five sets. The final volley that McEnroe missed on match point must still haunt him. It was usually a simple put-away for him. Lendl went on to dominate tennis through the 1980s. Everybody expected him to cave that day; he wasn't considered a tough match player, particularly in the clutch.
Mac was up a break in the 4th when he was still relatively fresh, and had his chances in the 5th, but couldn’t put Lendl away. Have to give him credit. He fought for this one.

The only real blip on arguably the best men's tennis season of all time. As great as Djoker was last year, the competition isn't as still for the era as Mac's was in 1984 with Lendl, Connors, Edberg, Wilander, Noah, etc all still playing at a high level near their primes.
the over-development of technology makes everything less democratic, and this is also true for tennis - the difference between the top players and the rest is much bigger now, exactly as it is the difference among the rich and the poor. I'm not being nostalgic, it's just facts: you want as much comfort as possibile, and as high a technology as possibile, then you you get it, and you lose freedom and equality.
no other tennis player dominated a year in open era like Mac did in 1984. Mac won Wimbledon...U.S open in 1984 so close to winning French open also.. His singles match record of 82-3 in 1984 remains the best single-season win rate of the Open Era.
The tennis from Mcenroe in the first two sets was the best ive ever seen ( given the era we are looking at ) The way he played on clay was absolute genius. He totally ran out of steam but those first two sets were brilliant.
That was Ivan's strength. He was supremely fit and would just wear his opponents down until their weaknesses used to show and then he would pounce. Ivan was one of the greatest men's tennis players to ever pick up a racket.
@@muzzupappa70 And your point IS exactly? McEnroe and Connors never won the French. Bjorn Borg never won the US or the Australian. But all of them were Number one. And if you knew anything about the slams and rankings, which it is apparent you do not, you would know that ALL FOUR carry the same number of ATP points toward ranking. But thanks for playing, you can pick up your participation trophy and lollipop on the way out.
Life is weird. As an hardcore Lendl's fan back then I was damn happy for his first win in a GS final. Nowadays I regret McEnroe didn't catch Paris that year. Just like Edberg in 1989. Because nobody playing such an offensive Tennis ever got so close. Ciao!
@@francoisdelpeuch8527 Well, the dude was a douche no doubt about it. But still going so close to get Paris playing the most offensive Tennis ever....IMHO a pity. Ciao!
@@thebigmonstaandy6644 He did, and in style. Weird thing is Yannick was not considered as offensive as a player as McEnroe/Edberg possibly because of his (not) winning record on grass. Ciao
One of the most enjoyable matches of all time! The nearest a serve and volley player has come to winning the French in a very long time - the contrast in styles is so interesting compared to today's slugfest, so much subtlety going on from McEnroe's racquet in particular. Mac broke twice in the 4th set but unusually for him he could not keep his foot on Lendl's neck and close it out. I really wanted Mac to win here as Borg, Vilas, Orantes, Soloman and Wilander had played Chess from the baseline in previous years and this was different as was the Noah's victory as he would come to the net and put Wilander to the sword - also a great match. I wantedd Edberg to win in 1989 too but the match went a similar way with Edberg not being able to finish Chang off when he had the upper hand and the baseliner prevailed over the serve and volleyer...so hard to come to the net these days with the ball travelling so fast!
@Countess of Groan well I was thinking the Wilander of 1982 when he wore everyone down including Clerc, Lendle and Vilas as well as in 1983 when he wore everyone down but Noah. Yes indeed Mats was a cerebral player and added various subtleties to his game to be good enough to win the US open and be ranked No.1. Although he added things to his game he was fundamentally a baseliner and never came close to winning Wimbledon as a result...
watch the fifth game of final set, two very nice cross court backhands Lendl 3:14:42 & 3:15:54 & the shut up call 3:15:08 and flying racket 3:15:25 McEnroe

The most dramatic final of the Open era with that of Wimbledon 2019! An injury forever for McEnroe who could have become an even more important champion if he had won this match.
I was a bit disappointed, when McEnroe lost to Lendl in Paris. It was one of the most memorable Grand Slam finals of the eighties. Hardly anybody liked Lendl back in the 80s, because he was a very reserved player back then and he hame from an east block country.
To very different type of players and personalities. Lendl was the Terminator and McEnroe was John Connor. In this match, McEnroe later admitted the pressure of winning the French Open caused him to choke. The one major that he never won.
I really enjoy the fact that they showed the audience much less, in the old matches, and focused on filming the players.
Yeah, I preferred that too.
I miss those matches today!
Serve&Volley vs. baseliner..
The style of modern players has become to similar.
Incredible the density of spectators in the stands. There wasn't a place left. At the time I was a child, it was broadcast on one of the 3 public television channels in France. That Sunday, the audience was monumental.
I will never tire of watching John's brilliant and effortless volleys.
John was a brilliant tennis player but his on court antics will forever tarnish his reputation. He could be a real asshole.

Mac the knife and Ivan the terrible!!!
Ahhh…!

The match that changed the trajectory of two careers! One of the greatest matches of all time.
John is not only a player legend but also a showman.
I don't know, man. McEnroe won the next 2 slams and Ivan didn't win again until a year and 3 mos later.
Mac went all blue...
Lendl was like a heavyweight fighter. The longer the match went the better he got. You had to knock him out. When McEnroe lost the fourth set, he knew it was slipping away. Great match.
What a match! Two all time greats and a fantastic rivalry. One of the greatest and most consequential matches in tennis history.
He also missed WAY to many first serves the longer into the match we got.
So true. That same shortcoming on fitness/conditioning cost him the 1980
Wimbledon final against Borg.
WRONG . McEnroe didnt throw the match away , Lendl WON the match because he was THE BETTER PLAYER on clay in general and THE BETTER PLAYER on clay that day .
Mac was winning. Lendl was an endurance athlete, like Borg. Mac gassed out.
I wanted Mac to win!
Paris can get quite warm during the
FO, and players that are not used to the heat, or going 5 sets on clay (common), or not in top shape, suffer.

John McEnroe played the best Tennis I have ever seen.

@@minoX6 Or perhaps you are young enough that you didn't see the era McEnroe played in where they used heavy tree branches, steel and aluminum to hit a tennis ball, with small heads on the racquet producing a tiny sweet spot and inferior strings.😎
Today's technology is so much better, lighter, and more accurate.

@Mr Shread No, it's not. This one was the toughest. Read his book "Serious".
1984 was the year McEnroe took tennis to a new level. Just shows how good Lendl was to beat him.
He certainly did - his demolition of Jimmy Conners in the Wimbledon final that year was incredible

Lendl went on to dominate tennis through the 1980s. the over-development of technology makes everything less democratic, and this is also true for tennis - the difference between the top players and the rest is much bigger now, exactly as it is the difference among the rich and the poor. John mcenroe without training or ever a coach was the GOAT FOR 5 MAGIC YEARS!
Noah won the French in 1983 playing serve and volley.
who's playing serve and volley on clay, in 2022?

I was a bit disappointed, when McEnroe lost to Lendl in Paris. It was one of the most memorable Grand Slam finals of the eighties.
Hardly anybody liked Lendl back in the 80s, because he was a very reserved player back then and he hame from an east block country.
In your memories.
A match of a Century
To very different type of players and personalities. Lendl was the Terminator and McEnroe was John Connor. In this match, McEnroe later admitted the pressure of winning the French Open caused him to choke. The one major that he never won.
Sometimes I had feeling that McEnroe played against himself.
Just like Federer at times...
McEnroe in 1984 played some of the best tennis ever seen. Had he not melted down in this match, he would have won it.
