Interesting to see how Lendl changed his strokes over the next few years. Everything became more elongated--but especially his forehand which became a loopy whip. Also, his serve here had him landing on his back foot (very old school) and later he landed on his front.

Vilas already had a kind of proto Rafa high spin ball :). So interesting to have watched this match. Among other aspects Lendl already had improved a part of his backhand long way. What age was Vilas?. Looked like very strong and well prepared fisically.
By that time these couple of excellent exponents of modern tennis did already HIT hard the ball with rather topspin aiming to short angles not only 'pushing' forward or pointing to corners. I like how well they completely covered every sides of the court to restart the point. I see Vilas heavily breathing going to his bench after a long point. Great athletes already.

    nice upload.
man, the game here is about the precision needed to use rackets with a smaller sweet spot. i know it's clay but these guys are just standing around waiting for the opponent to hit the ball back. power/speed is not really part of the game! neither is rushing the net, at least for these guys... i mean, Vilas hits ball within inch of baseline to Lendl's backhand and still stays back!
kind of frustrating - different times, although the particular players and surface admittedly has something to do with it too.

  • @dansmith9724
    @dansmith9724 8 месяцев назад

Interesting. Lendl hadnt really developed his backhand yet. He kind of pushes the ball on his backhand, where later on he had alot more power and topspin and really hit through the ball. A couple of points there i was expecting him to smash the ball away on his backhand but instead pushed it back, but a few years later those shots he would be smashing them for winners.

Vilas and Lendl. Both built so different. Lendl is a typical bean pole tennis player who wants to carry no extra weight , including muscles. Vilas built like a boxer or rugby player. Strong as a bull. Borg always thought he could always outlast the muscled up Vilas. To me Vilas and Lendl took fitness to another level back then. Both worked out all the time , and watched there diet. Vilas , like Nadal a muscled up anomaly in tennis. Today’s players are incredibly fit , but there bean poles. Look at skinny medvedev. Weight slows you down. Vilas and Nadal were different.

It's amazing how slow they play they rarely hit down the line or fast winners therefore the rallies were so long.

The Raquets aren’t as powerful for hitting booming ground strokes I’d imagine ..

Yes, definitely much less easy power and spin. Vilas was an absolute powerhouse back in the day and Lendl had the most lethal forehand in the game but neither man would even try to just blast the ball off the baseline the way even wimpy guys can these days. It was counter-productive to the point of suicidal.

Compared to today's players, it looks like something you'd see at the local park. These guys couldn't take a game of Nadal.

They're both over their 50s, Vilas is almost 70. It would be a miracle if they take a game off Nadal. I've seen Vilas a few years ago holding his own against pro players (top 100) in practice.

@@leonardoperrotta i think he means these guys as they were (with those racquets) vs. nadal today..... one thing i will say is those groundstrokes are much deeper than what you see today. much loopier

Balls weren’t as lively on clay. The courts slower. Less powerful racquets and strings.

Vilas jugaba con raqueta aro 75, el chino 95/100. Otras cuerdas, otras pelotas, otras raquetas.

      Saludos
