It seems very much like Jim Carrey to blame anyone but himself when something less than pleasant happens to him. You can just tell from the way he tells the story he’s leaving something significant out, and probably exaggerating a good amount too.
I’d like to hear Tommy Lee Jones’ side of it, but from what I can tell he’s never had a negative thing to say publicly about Jim Carrey.

    • @Hairaising

I tried searching for an interview where Tommy Lee Jones talked about the situation, but I couldn’t find any. I will say, Carrey is a lot more humble in his interview with Howard Stern than he was on Norm MacDonald’s podcast. It does seem greatly exaggerated on Norm’s show.

I think Tommy Lee couldn't stand the fact that Jim Carrey was on the top and very successful at that time. Tommy also said in one interview that he only played Two Face in Batman because of his kid that asked him to. So looks like he was not very happy on set and he got a load of Jim Carrey's comedy tornado expression and "buffoonery" that additionally pissed him out. To be honest, if this all is true Tommy sounds like quite unprofessional, grumpy man.

I don't know the full story surrounding the tension between these two. No one really does. But this is what I've always felt might have been the case. An educated guess.
Tommy Lee Jones won an Oscar for The Fugitive in early 1994. That summer he had a major role in A Time to Kill, which was also directed by Joel Schumacher. Jones was now a big name and signed to be part of this major Batman film directed by Schumacher, where he was not only the villain but received second billing.
That same year, Jim Carrey blew up with not one, not two but three films. Ace Ventura, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber. All those films were from the same studio, Warner Bros. (Two of them were from New Line Cinema, which was owned by Warner.) No doubt they had a good feeling that Dumb and Dumber would also be a hit, so before that film was released, they signed Carrey to play The Riddler in Batman Forever.
Schumacher said in an interview he took an immediate liking to Carrey, so my guess is that before production began the script was reworked to the point where the Riddler basically took over the story. No doubt, something like that wouldn't sit well with Jones. He"d now be taking a back seat to an actor who was best known for improvising and stealing scenes with his silliness.
Sure, Jones got a bigger paycheck, but my guess is that the experience left him feeling a little raw. That doesn't excuse him for being mean to Carrey if he truly was. In recent years, he's come across as being an old grouch to just about everybody. But I'm guessing that behind the scenes, this was the situation that unfolded.

  • @MarkoBotsaris

The proper, pure comeback to the “bafoonery” quip was probably “well that’s why I get the big bucks”. But so many good ones - “I’m sorry Tommy, I’m a method actor”, etc. All ones you unfortunately think of after the fact. But in defense of Jones, I think there could be a big difference between working with an actor playing the Joker, and working with the actual Joker when the camera is not running. Add a giant dollop of “WTF am I doing in this movie” on top and it was probably a recipe for lashing out, if not a complete identity crisis.

As much as Tommy Lee tries to show that he is on board with how outrageous DC villains can be..you can see he is kind of choking on that answer. Like he's saying he's comfortable with it..but he's really realy..really really..NOT! And to have to try to sell that performance for him is challenging as is..but now you have the king of "over the top humor" in the same movie..and he might have been concerned that his idea of "over the top" might not be over the top enough next to Jim.

I know in the Tim Burton movie he was black, because of Billy Dee Williams. And the comics might have changed after the movie to show that. But he wasn't black in the comics before the movie. I don't know what Action Comics you're referring to. By the time he was in Nolan's Batman (the only other Batman movie), he was white. In the animated series he was always white.

Harvey was always caucasian in the comics. Tim Burton decided to race swap him (obviously not for the sake of forced diversity like it's done now) and Billy Dee Williams didn't reprise the role because Burton was no longer the director. Tommy could have been a great Two Face but he was so petty that he felt he had to take the spotlight from Jim Carrey.
