I am a native Kurmanji speaker from the north of Kurdistan and I can say that most of Kurmanjs would understand Sorani very limited in a normal conversation without knowing any Sorani. I used to not understand it but just by listening it I am able to follow the news in Sorani now. We need more connections between us to learn each other’s Kurdish languages.
@silent hill I know Kurmanji very very well. Telling our history or why or how our language has been devided has nothing to do with understanding of people. It was once one language and now it is not. Even though most of Kurds in Bakur will use the dialectic or accent differences as an excuse to not speak Kurdish with other Kurds, I always say I understand other Kurmanjs and I speak in Kurmanji to them. Kurmanjs in Başûr understand Sorani because Sorani is the lingua franca in Başûr. The second official language of Iraq is Sorani (Kurdish). Maybe it is not specified but it is. Even many Şebekî, Palewanî, Sarlî and Hewramî speakers shift to Sorani and lose their languages. To be proud children of Kurdistan we need to be united by souls not languages.
