@@6PrincessHeart9We consider our language to be a closed practice so we don’t share the Romani language with non-Roma, there are some limited resources online but we ask that those be left to Roma who were adopted or did not get raised with the language out of respect for our culture.

English: no, jenische are not Roma, like irish travellers. I mentioned an austrian historic who makes a wonderful podcast in german language and just wrpte a book about european minorities in which they are mentioned.
Hey Florian, I am from punjab, India. I saw all your videos, my language punjabi and it's vocabulary is quite similar to Romani. We are just basically cousins. ❤ so much love and appreciation for you and your wonderful community/groups and sub groups. ❤
Yep, I learned that with my then pakistani husband from the punjab when we visited a roma- organisation here in Berlin to get some help for a roma family that tragically lost their child to an accident in a refugee-boarding-house (we met in church, he had to run from Pakistan belonging to the christian minority and then helped other refugees here). He also didn't know this that time and found it quite interesting.

And you know that my language - punjabi - is heavily borrowed from hindi which is spoken widely in India, Urdu in Pakistan and Persian (farsi, in my tongue) of Iran. In fact, the word punjab is of Persian origin: punj = five and aab = river. We are from the land of five rivers. So whenever Florian refers to India, like Central India or Northern India (where punjab and Rajasthan exist), he's basically referring to most of things (language wise) which may be foreign to him but are still present even if that they had left India since 10th or 11th century. I guess what I'm saying is that we have more things in common to unite us than to divide us which I believe is true for all mankind.
@@jashandeep9652 Exactly! I am mixed south-american and german, so from birth on I guess was feeling more a "world citizen". And yes, I know that Urdu and Hindi are mostly the same, except some words, that are mostly connected to being muslim or hindu. Like greetings for example. And that Urdu is written in farsi alphabeth (which I cannot read) and Hindi in what I call "flower-like alphabet" - sorry I always forget the name - from left to right like our european alphabet. And that in Pakistan everybody speaks Urdu and then a regional language like Pubjabi or Pashtu and in India not everybody speaks Hindi, which makes it more difficult. As a vegan my most loved kitchen always had been the asian and there most the "indian" (spoken for the subcontinent). As Sahil had mostly muslim pakistani friends it was very welcome to them that they could have safely eaten at my flat and they accepted that I am vegan and therefor have also strict eating regularies, so they cooked with special ingredients for me. That felt very validated😊 The world could be such a peaceful place if we all try to be more interested in each other and look for what we have in common and embrace that instead fearfully focus on the differences. Of cause I don't like everything and everyone, but that's just human. And we all are used to things we grew up with. Most germans for example simply cannot eat spicy food and for me german food mostly tastes like boring unspiced. But nearly all love mango lassi or spiced tea with (soy-)milk (they call it "Yogi-tea" here or even worse "chai-tea"🤣, like tea-tea, but okay...). You know what I mean? Greetings to the Punjab👋🏽

Im finnish roma and as a child I remember seeing all kinds of different roma around the world on TV. I would often ask my family, how come they're roma but they don't follow the same rules / dress code as us? (finnish roma have vry distinct clothing) My family didn't really have the knowledge to answer me so the moment I saw this video in my recommended I got so excited. Wonderfully educational video! I thought it was so cool to learn the ethymology of Kale Romani. From what I understand it is also the translation used in Finnish - Mustalainen? Sorry if I am being ignorant
@@DT-xz7hb The word _musta_ means black (like the colour), so it could be translated as “bl**ky” I think, and basically serves the same function as the English G-slur. If I’ve understood correctly, the word is considered a slur in Finnish as well.
Here in Slovakia where you can find them literally everywhere, they are called cigáni or rómovia. For them cigáň is a slur. It basically means darker one as a slang but mostly the primary meaning is liar.

I came across some Siganos in Central Brasil. There were some that lived in houses but most I came across were travelers. They taught me a lot about them. I didn’t know that they spoke a different language. Their language doesn’t sound anything like any other language I am familiar with. They were friendly people. And no, we did not get robbed.

I love your channel, Florian! As a Brazilian myself I've never heard of Juscelino Kubitschek being of romani origin, no one never told me about this when I was at school (and I bet no one talks about this even nowadays). So I think it's sad in a way that I only learned about this by chance when I found your channel, because I think we Brazilians should be aware of this! Romani culture is very present here (well, at least where I live). There are several romani celebrations in my city along the year, but still, we non-romani mostly have access here to a romanticized view of romani people, and there is a lot of prejudice in regards to romani culture and people. It's intersting to note that here in Brazil, romani culture was incorporated in an Afro-Brazilian religion called Umbanda, which mixes African (Yoruba/Iorubá), Native (mostly tupy-guarany/tupi-guarani), Christian and often Romani cultures/practices/beliefs. So for most Brazilians, this is the first source of knowledge about romani culture and people.

I am African American and I have always loved learning about all these groups of romani peoples. I knew the were a lot because a friend who had a Romani boyfriend wrote words out for me to learn many years ago. While you were talking I actually remembered some of the group names. Your history, and culture, music is so beautiful I feel so lucky to know a little about the Romani and you are doing this such amazing work educating the world.

Honestly, you are doing an amazing job by immortalizing Roma culture and history, specially considering most Roma do not have a written history and it’s all spoken history, which I understand the retaliation against written history for Roma, because their history has been manipulated for many racist reasons, but still, having "documents" backing you up is necessary, or otherwise you risk being forgotten in history.
I'm Dutch, and in a relationship with a Bulgarian. Because of that I notice sooooo much prejudice against Romani people. Bulgarian society seems completely drenched with anti-Roma sentiments. I went to RUclips to learn more and one of the first videos I came across is this one. Very interesting stuff.

Trust me, it’s justified! I am a romanian and they do themselves no favour with their behaviour! Btw, I’m in a relationship with a Roma man, he is different but most of them refuse to get an education, to work, etc! He dropped out of school early, it’s their culture, but he is an intelligent, hard working man and he wants to Better himself! Their culture doesn’t value education and hard work, but he is different!Educate yourself on the matter and Interact with them and you’ll see for yourself!
My ancestry is Magyarországi Romák, my grandmother was always being asked by First Nations people here in Canada whether she was First Nations or not (she always said with a big smile how much that flattered her). Sadly, however, we don't know a lot about whether the family was Romungre, Lovari, Boyash, or possibly another subgroup. Her mother (who was adopted into a German family) was so impacted by anti-Romani racism growing up that she refused to talk about the family heritage at all out of a deep shame about it, and pretended she wasn't Romani. My grandmother really wanted to find out more, since all she knew was that her biological grandfather was Hungarian Romani and not even what part of Hungary the family was originally from, but sadly her mother's adoptive parents wouldn't tell her anything out of respect for her mother's wishes for it not to be a topic of conversation. She said her grandparents were very positive about Romani people and really wanted to tell her, but they didn't want to further traumatize their daughter after the horrible socialization she had had growing up from cruel German kids (and adults) by bringing it up, and although her grandfather was still alive when her mother died, by that time he had dementia and she wasn't able to have those kinds of conversations with him. She moved to Canada as an adult with her German husband before having my dad and my uncle. My dad was never all that interested in finding anything out, but my uncle and I have contemplated a trip to Europe to try and track down our family, as we both share the same interest my grandmother had. However, it's a really daunting task with such a small amount of information as we have from my grandmother, who has since passed away. We don't even have her grandfather's surname, since only her mother and adoptive grandparents knew that. She always spoke so sadly about how traumatized my great-grandmother was about our heritage, and how much she regretted not being able to connect with a heritage that she could see so visibly every time she looked at her mother or in the mirror. She was always curious about other Romani people and Romani cultures, and learned as much as she could to try and connect with that part of her heritage, but I think she always missed not having that cultural connection and knowledge of her own biological family and where they came from from specifically. I wish she had lived to see your youtube channel, I know she would have clicked on every video, excited to learn more!
Have you considered taking an ancestry test? I know they are not really experts on different Romani or Turkish groups etc. but you may end up finding a cousin who might know more?
My maternal great grandmother was a Hungarian Romani who moved to the states as a child. I don’t know which subgroup she was from either. She taught my mom words that are either Romani or Hungarian words that are no longer in use. I do know her maiden name at least. My nana, her daughter, would always get asked if she was Italian. She had dark hair and brown eyes and dark circles that never went away. Her father was Irish. I’ve always been proud to be a Romani but I don’t have to face the racism that others have
I had a friend who found out her family was Polish Romani but because of anti Roma discrimination her family basically whitewashed their heritage when they moved to Canada as well and so she doesn't have access to her history/heritage
My family are Kalderash who left Romania and are now living in the USA. Thanks for breaking this all down! Ive always had a tough time explaining it to others when asked 😅

I went to Madrid for a week once to study at one of their flamenco conservatories. I don’t believe our teacher/professor was romani (she might have been!), but she made sure to tell us how important romani were in the creation of so many of these old spanish traditions. She was very thorough in her explanation, and I wish I could still remember all of it, but sadly it has been nearly 10 years. Essentially, the style of singing in flamenco started out as a mix of romani styles, middle-eastern styles, and whatever the local style was. The music itself is also created through this mix as well as the dance (though it might be tougher to see that as both have obviously evolved quite a bit) But it really is something I think about quite a bit. I’m not romani myself, but whether people like it or not, romani have always been here and they will continue to be here. Meaning they have helped shape so so so many different cultures. With that said, thank you for this video!

When you mentioned the Roma subgroups who speak an older form of Romanian I got very excited because I thought, as a Romanian, by studying their language, we could discover how old Vlachs used to speak. Then I got sad because of all the institutional racism that’s keeping such knowledge away from the common people. Thank you for making this video! It’s beautiful to see the diversity of Roma people represented in your video. Since you asked for a roll call from different groups I’d like to raise my hand and tell a little about myself and who I come from. I am a descendant of the Canasteros (basket makers) of the Cale of Southern Spain, Portugal, and southern France. Who were rounded up in the late 17th and early 18th century and sent as domestic servants and slaves on the sugar cane plantations in the colonies. They then ended up fleeing into the interior parts of the Deep Southern US during the colonial period and mixing with various local Native American groups. Which is why I’m here today….It’s interesting to note that even in the clan systems of Mvskoke (Muskogee) peoples there is a designation for people of Spanish Roma maternal lineages ,este-spani, literally means Spanish people. But it’s generally used for people from all the Cale groups of Portugal, Spain, and Southern France not just Andalusian Spanish. Again thank you for the video!!! Yoooo, even as someone living in the U.S. I've waited to find a relatively accessible video *by someone who belongs to a Romani subgroup* explaining the different subgroups. This is *very* informative. Thank you! Now, I'd love to learn about which various Romani subgroups in Canada & the USA in a separate video because I've always wondered how many people from Romani subgroups live in my U.S. state.
This is a particularly interesting topic! Being of mixed heritage, mainly Hungarian, Slovak, and Romani, ( my last name is through marriage.) I have been doing some of my own research, ( My family lived through the Porjamos and I didn't learn much from them - the older generation was rather quiet about this.) But I do know of the Olah subgroup - are they a branch of the Kalderash? Are the Lovari a further subgroup of the Olah/Kalderash Roma? With surnames Lakatos, Farkas, Kolompar, very common. I remember many of the old songs from my mother, great aunt, and listen to them (I've found them on RUclips) and there is actually a song about the Olah Roma - the lyrics say they pitched their tents on the edge of a forest and a bird is singing in a tree above them.) Through the music, I am remembering words that I have almost forgotten entirely - I am 60 years old. Thank you Florian, for educating the public!
Thanks for commenting! Olah is the Hungarian pronounciation for Vlax, so it can be Lovara, Kalderash, Boyash or any other Vlax group. Some Vlax Roma just identify as Vlax/Olah too!
I love your channel. My great grandmother from Hungary told my uncle "we are gypsies." I apologize to for using this term, but to honor my grandmother, I use her term. I am learning so much about my family history because they were escaping the early 1900s. I have several nomadic peoples in my roots. I love to travel and have always loved Indian culture (for some reason), now I know. Also my grandfather (son of great-grandmother from Hungry), was a music major and played several instruments, like the Saxophone. He ended up starting a roofing business to make money though, which got passed down to my father/uncle and then me, but I left the roofing business. Oddly I am a musician also and a dancer. I personally embrace the word Gipsy or Gitano (because I also speak Spanish, (again I apologize to to other Roma who are against this word, Understandably)), I started identifying as Roma, but a lost one to history and discrimination. I am honoring my ancestors by wearing the flag as a badge of pride. I am also mixed with Indigenous American, Irish and Celt. Thank you so much for your videos. Much love!

Same, Roma means human, person. Is a bulshit. This is because the term "Roma" for gypsies was imposed politically, without connection with reality, with the old names .
Yeah in gipsy language it's the same. We actually make fun of them because when they as you "manush san".. are you human? To us it sounds funny but what they actually ask you is if you're gipsy.
funny thing in Romanian there's a word 'Mănușă' (in Romanian it means glove)which sounds like Manush and I remember my grandma told me a person constantly asked why other Roma called her glove 😅

I'm from Finland, so most of what I have learned about Romani culture here is from the context of Finnish kaaleet. I was really surprised when I first learned that the cultural dress I had associated with the Roma as a whole was actually unique to this particular sub-group! Pour one out for the German Travelling People. I don't know if they would be considered a Romani people, they have more similarities with the Irish Travellers, but I know that their own secret language had influences from the Sinti language, as well as Yiddish. The question is moot though as the entire people was eradicated during the Third Reich. Even many Germans today have no idea that this entire culture was a thing and was brutally murdered so I take every opportunity I can to remind people. Great video, mate. I had actually no idea the Romani people were this diverse. Here's to them living in prosperty and free from persecution. 🍻
@@florida.florianjup Jenische are not related to the romani people, there are still quite a few jenische in switzerland and also parts of france (spelled Yéniche) My grandmother was jenische and told me some stories when I was a child. They we’re also repressed in switzerland along with sinti and roma well into the 20th century, kids taken away from those who were still traveling, sterilizations. Truly horrible stuff. Would be intersting to learn of historical examples of how non-romani travelers interacted with the romani peoples, as I’m sure there must have been contacts (and maybe conflicts?) Very well made and interesting video, thank you!

I live in Poland, I am not a Roma, but where I live there are a lot of Roma people and traces of their culture. I find it very interesting and that's why I like watching your videos, I like learning about groups that live in the country, expanding knowledge can always help with acceptance and understanding, which unfortunately many Poles (and not only) lack. In addition, your films reveal stories that are not talked about, I appreciate it very much.
As someone who has spent years learning flamenco with the gitanos this was very interesting. Absolutely amazing people with a great culture and gift for the arts.
Outside of flamenco, if one knows anything about Jazz then the most recognizable Romani musician is probably Django Reinhardt of France. You should do a video on him as he is one of the few people in the genre to have a jazz standard in his honor (the song Django by the Modern Jazz Quartet).

Thank you very much for this video! In Germany, people usually talk about "Sinti and Roma", very rarely seperating the two groups, and pretty much never mentioning others. Therefore whenever I came across other group names I was confused and never quite understood if they meant Sinti and / or Roma, maybe just using another word because of roots in another language. Now I have your video for reference! Also, I kind of "liked" (not sure if this is the right word) all the groups named after their profession. It reminded me of the origin of many European surnames.
i just want to thank you so much for this video. i'm american romani (Czech Roma originally) from a family where we DO not talk about our heritage and it's been so hard to find any good information on who we are, who we were, etc from someone who is actually romani and speaking on roma culture and subcultures with respect and affection. i have the biggest smile on my face right now. thank you so so much for allowing me to feel connected w/ my roots thru this video.

I was quite ignorant to the g slur and was very confused around its historical context, but thanks to you I feel like I'm more educated than my younger self would have been. I'm a Turkish person living in Germany, and it makes me happy to see how connected Turkey is to Romani people! I definitely didn't know about these connections before watching the video. Sadly, it is still very common for turkish people to call romani people ç*ngene - I hope that changes soon. Love you guys!
I’m from Sweden and I don’t know that much about Romani people but this year my school put up a play about a Romani family in the Swedish suburbs. It got to play a roman guy who faced many problems and later died by taking an over dose in this play. And since then I have been very interested in the culture, the people! I have always seen Romani people from mainly Bulgaria and Romania, sitting outside supermarkets and not having a home here in Sweden. And I have never thought about them. Thank you for educating me with your videos!

Your content has taught me more about Romani history and culture than I'd ever heard hinted at before -- even in history textbooks about, ostensibly, "the whole world." Also . . . Yep, I learned that with my then pakistani husband from the punjab when we visited a roma- organisation here in Berlin to get some help for a roma family that tragically lost their child to an accident in a refugee-boarding-house (we met in church, he had to run from Pakistan belonging to the christian minority and then helped other refugees here).
He also didn't know this that time and found it quite interesting.

And you know that my language - punjabi - is heavily borrowed from hindi which is spoken widely in India, Urdu in Pakistan and Persian (farsi, in my tongue) of Iran. In fact, the word punjab is of Persian origin: punj = five and aab = river. We are from the land of five rivers. So whenever Florian refers to India, like Central India or Northern India (where punjab and Rajasthan exist), he's basically referring to most of things (language wise) which may be foreign to him but are still present even if that they had left India since 10th or 11th century.
I guess what I'm saying is that we have more things in common to unite us than to divide us which I believe is true for all mankind.
@@jashandeep9652 Exactly! I am mixed south-american and german, so from birth on I guess was feeling more a "world citizen". And yes, I know that Urdu and Hindi are mostly the same, except some words, that are mostly connected to being muslim or hindu. Like greetings for example. And that Urdu is written in farsi alphabeth (which I cannot read) and Hindi in what I call "flower-like alphabet" - sorry I always forget the name - from left to right like our european alphabet.
And that in Pakistan everybody speaks Urdu and then a regional language like Pubjabi or Pashtu and in India not everybody speaks Hindi, which makes it more difficult.
As a vegan my most loved kitchen always had been the asian and there most the "indian" (spoken for the subcontinent). As Sahil had mostly muslim pakistani friends it was very welcome to them that they could have safely eaten at my flat and they accepted that I am vegan and therefor have also strict eating regularies, so they cooked with special ingredients for me.
That felt very validated😊

Of cause I don't like everything and everyone, but that's just human. And we all are used to things we grew up with.
Most germans for example simply cannot eat spicy food and for me german food mostly tastes like boring unspiced. But nearly all love mango lassi or spiced tea with (soy-)milk (they call it "Yogi-tea" here or even worse "chai-tea"🤣, like tea-tea, but okay...).

Im finnish roma and as a child I remember seeing all kinds of different roma around the world on TV. I would often ask my family, how come they're roma but they don't follow the same rules / dress code as us? (finnish roma have vry distinct clothing) My family didn't really have the knowledge to answer me so the moment I saw this video in my recommended I got so excited. Wonderfully educational video! @@DT-xz7hb The word _musta_ means black (like the colour), so it could be translated as “bl**ky” I think, and basically serves the same function as the English G-slur. If I’ve understood correctly, the word is considered a slur in Finnish as well.
Here in Slovakia where you can find them literally everywhere, they are called cigáni or rómovia. For them cigáň is a slur. It basically means darker one as a slang but mostly the primary meaning is liar.
Gosh, the amount of anthropological work that was put in to connect the different groups is amazing. It's wonderful this information is available.

I came across some Siganos in Central Brasil. There were some that lived in houses but most I came across were travelers. They taught me a lot about them. I didn’t know that they spoke a different language. Their language doesn’t sound anything like any other language I am familiar with. They were friendly people. And no, we did not get robbed.

She's a black mexican woman and myself a Megitano. Nowadays we have a little toddler, and I only speak romanes with my daughter and at the same time, we investigate, and we are so proud of her african heritage.
It's so awesome how the history of our ethnicities has resulted in my current everyday's joy

I love your channel, Florian! As a Brazilian myself I've never heard of Juscelino Kubitschek being of romani origin, no one never told me about this when I was at school (and I bet no one talks about this even nowadays). So I think it's sad in a way that I only learned about this by chance when I found your channel, because I think we Brazilians should be aware of this!
Romani culture is very present here (well, at least where I live). There are several romani celebrations in my city along the year, but still, we non-romani mostly have access here to a romanticized view of romani people, and there is a lot of prejudice in regards to romani culture and people.
It's intersting to note that here in Brazil, romani culture was incorporated in an Afro-Brazilian religion called Umbanda, which mixes African (Yoruba/Iorubá), Native (mostly tupy-guarany/tupi-guarani), Christian and often Romani cultures/practices/beliefs. So for most Brazilians, this is the first source of knowledge about romani culture and people.
Check out Jade Kalin if you haven’t already, she’s a Brazilian Romani creator who makes a lot of content about Brazilian Roma in Portuguese!

I am African American and I have always loved learning about all these groups of romani peoples. I knew the were a lot because a friend who had a Romani boyfriend wrote words out for me to learn many years ago. While you were talking I actually remembered some of the group names. Your history, and culture, music is so beautiful I feel so lucky to know a little about the Romani and you are doing this such amazing work educating the world.

Honestly, you are doing an amazing job by immortalizing Roma culture and history, specially considering most Roma do not have a written history and it’s all spoken history, which I understand the retaliation against written history for Roma, because their history has been manipulated for many racist reasons, but still, having "documents" backing you up is necessary, or otherwise you risk being forgotten in history.
With medias we have today such as videos and audio recordings, it is now much easier to keep record of it.
All this info is from secondary sources, scholarship that has been done. So, it has already been documented / "immortalized." He is just repeating it.
I'm Dutch, and in a relationship with a Bulgarian. Because of that I notice sooooo much prejudice against Romani people. Bulgarian society seems completely drenched with anti-Roma sentiments. I went to RUclips to learn more and one of the first videos I came across is this one. Very interesting stuff.

Btw, I’m in a relationship with a Roma man, he is different but most of them refuse to get an education, to work, etc! My ancestry is Magyarországi Romák, my grandmother was always being asked by First Nations people here in Canada whether she was First Nations or not (she always said with a big smile how much that flattered her). Sadly, however, we don't know a lot about whether the family was Romungre, Lovari, Boyash, or possibly another subgroup. Her mother (who was adopted into a German family) was so impacted by anti-Romani racism growing up that she refused to talk about the family heritage at all out of a deep shame about it, and pretended she wasn't Romani. My grandmother really wanted to find out more, since all she knew was that her biological grandfather was Hungarian Romani and not even what part of Hungary the family was originally from, but sadly her mother's adoptive parents wouldn't tell her anything out of respect for her mother's wishes for it not to be a topic of conversation. She said her grandparents were very positive about Romani people and really wanted to tell her, but they didn't want to further traumatize their daughter after the horrible socialization she had had growing up from cruel German kids (and adults) by bringing it up, and although her grandfather was still alive when her mother died, by that time he had dementia and she wasn't able to have those kinds of conversations with him. She moved to Canada as an adult with her German husband before having my dad and my uncle.
My dad was never all that interested in finding anything out, but my uncle and I have contemplated a trip to Europe to try and track down our family, as we both share the same interest my grandmother had. However, it's a really daunting task with such a small amount of information as we have from my grandmother, who has since passed away. We don't even have her grandfather's surname, since only her mother and adoptive grandparents knew that. She always spoke so sadly about how traumatized my great-grandmother was about our heritage, and how much she regretted not being able to connect with a heritage that she could see so visibly every time she looked at her mother or in the mirror. She was always curious about other Romani people and Romani cultures, and learned as much as she could to try and connect with that part of her heritage, but I think she always missed not having that cultural connection and knowledge of her own biological family and where they came from from specifically.

Have you considered taking an ancestry test? I know they are not really experts on different Romani or Turkish groups etc. but you may end up finding a cousin who might know more?
My maternal great grandmother was a Hungarian Romani who moved to the states as a child. I don’t know which subgroup she was from either. She taught my mom words that are either Romani or Hungarian words that are no longer in use. I do know her maiden name at least. My nana, her daughter, would always get asked if she was Italian. She had dark hair and brown eyes and dark circles that never went away. Her father was Irish. I’ve always been proud to be a Romani but I don’t have to face the racism that others have
I had a friend who found out her family was Polish Romani but because of anti Roma discrimination her family basically whitewashed their heritage when they moved to Canada as well and so she doesn't have access to her history/heritage

I went to Madrid for a week once to study at one of their flamenco conservatories.
I don’t believe our teacher/professor was romani (she might have been!), but she made sure to tell us how important romani were in the creation of so many of these old spanish traditions. She was very thorough in her explanation, and I wish I could still remember all of it, but sadly it has been nearly 10 years.
Essentially, the style of singing in flamenco started out as a mix of romani styles, middle-eastern styles, and whatever the local style was.
The music itself is also created through this mix as well as the dance (though it might be tougher to see that as both have obviously evolved quite a bit)
But it really is something I think about quite a bit.
I’m not romani myself, but whether people like it or not, romani have always been here and they will continue to be here. Meaning they have helped shape so so so many different cultures.
With that said, thank you for this video!

When you mentioned the Roma subgroups who speak an older form of Romanian I got very excited because I thought, as a Romanian, by studying their language, we could discover how old Vlachs used to speak.
Then I got sad because of all the institutional racism that’s keeping such knowledge away from the common people.

Thank you for making this video! It’s beautiful to see the diversity of Roma people represented in your video. Since you asked for a roll call from different groups I’d like to raise my hand and tell a little about myself and who I come from. I am a descendant of the Canasteros (basket makers) of the Cale of Southern Spain, Portugal, and southern France. Who were rounded up in the late 17th and early 18th century and sent as domestic servants and slaves on the sugar cane plantations in the colonies. They then ended up fleeing into the interior parts of the Deep Southern US during the colonial period and mixing with various local Native American groups. Which is why I’m here today….It’s interesting to note that even in the clan systems of Mvskoke (Muskogee) peoples there is a designation for people of Spanish Roma maternal lineages ,este-spani, literally means Spanish people. But it’s generally used for people from all the Cale groups of Portugal, Spain, and Southern France not just Andalusian Spanish. Again thank you for the video!!! Yoooo, even as someone living in the U.S. I've waited to find a relatively accessible video *by someone who belongs to a Romani subgroup* explaining the different subgroups. This is *very* informative. Thank you! Now, I'd love to learn about which various Romani subgroups in Canada & the USA in a separate video because I've always wondered how many people from Romani subgroups live in my U.S. state.
This is a particularly interesting topic! Being of mixed heritage, mainly Hungarian, Slovak, and Romani, ( my last name is through marriage.) I have been doing some of my own research, ( My family lived through the Porjamos and I didn't learn much from them - the older generation was rather quiet about this.) But I do know of the Olah subgroup - are they a branch of the Kalderash? Are the Lovari a further subgroup of the Olah/Kalderash Roma? With surnames Lakatos, Farkas, Kolompar, very common. I remember many of the old songs from my mother, great aunt, and listen to them (I've found them on RUclips) and there is actually a song about the Olah Roma - the lyrics say they pitched their tents on the edge of a forest and a bird is singing in a tree above them.) Through the music, I am remembering words that I have almost forgotten entirely - I am 60 years old. Thank you Florian, for educating the public!
Thanks for commenting! Olah is the Hungarian pronounciation for Vlax, so it can be Lovara, Kalderash, Boyash or any other Vlax group. Some Vlax Roma just identify as Vlax/Olah too!
I love your channel. My great grandmother from Hungary told my uncle "we are gypsies." I apologize to for using this term, but to honor my grandmother, I use her term. I am learning so much about my family history because they were escaping the early 1900s. I have several nomadic peoples in my roots. I love to travel and have always loved Indian culture (for some reason), now I know. Also my grandfather (son of great-grandmother from Hungry), was a music major and played several instruments, like the Saxophone. He ended up starting a roofing business to make money though, which got passed down to my father/uncle and then me, but I left the roofing business. Oddly I am a musician also and a dancer. I personally embrace the word Gipsy or Gitano (because I also speak Spanish, (again I apologize to to other Roma who are against this word, Understandably)), I started identifying as Roma, but a lost one to history and discrimination. I am honoring my ancestors by wearing the flag as a badge of pride. I am also mixed with Indigenous American, Irish and Celt. Thank you so much for your videos. Much love!

Yeah in gipsy language it's the same. We actually make fun of them because when they as you "manush san".. are you human? To us it sounds funny but what they actually ask you is if you're gipsy.
funny thing in Romanian there's a word 'Mănușă' (in Romanian it means glove)which sounds like Manush and I remember my grandma told me a person constantly asked why other Roma called her glove 😅

I'm from Finland, so most of what I have learned about Romani culture here is from the context of Finnish kaaleet. I was really surprised when I first learned that the cultural dress I had associated with the Roma as a whole was actually unique to this particular sub-group! Thank you for the video Florian, it made me appreciate the diversity of different Roma groups even more :-)
Pour one out for the German Travelling People. I don't know if they would be considered a Romani people, they have more similarities with the Irish Travellers, but I know that their own secret language had influences from the Sinti language, as well as Yiddish. The question is moot though as the entire people was eradicated during the Third Reich. Even many Germans today have no idea that this entire culture was a thing and was brutally murdered so I take every opportunity I can to remind people.

No the Yenische are European travellers not Romani, I should have clarified that in the non-Roma section
@@florida.florianjup Jenische are not related to the romani people, there are still quite a few jenische in switzerland and also parts of france (spelled Yéniche) My grandmother was jenische and told me some stories when I was a child. They we’re also repressed in switzerland along with sinti and roma well into the 20th century, kids taken away from those who were still traveling, sterilizations. Truly horrible stuff.
Would be intersting to learn of historical examples of how non-romani travelers interacted with the romani peoples, as I’m sure there must have been contacts (and maybe conflicts?)

I live in Poland, I am not a Roma, but where I live there are a lot of Roma people and traces of their culture. I find it very interesting and that's why I like watching your videos, I like learning about groups that live in the country, expanding knowledge can always help with acceptance and understanding, which unfortunately many Poles (and not only) lack. In addition, your films reveal stories that are not talked about, I appreciate it very much.
As someone who has spent years learning flamenco with the gitanos this was very interesting. Absolutely amazing people with a great culture and gift for the arts.

Outside of flamenco, if one knows anything about Jazz then the most recognizable Romani musician is probably Django Reinhardt of France. You should do a video on him as he is one of the few people in the genre to have a jazz standard in his honor (the song Django by the Modern Jazz Quartet).

Thank you very much for this video! In Germany, people usually talk about "Sinti and Roma", very rarely seperating the two groups, and pretty much never mentioning others. Therefore whenever I came across other group names I was confused and never quite understood if they meant Sinti and / or Roma, maybe just using another word because of roots in another language. Now I have your video for reference!
Also, I kind of "liked" (not sure if this is the right word) all the groups named after their profession. It reminded me of the origin of many European surnames.

I was quite ignorant to the g slur and was very confused around its historical context, but thanks to you I feel like I'm more educated than my younger self would have been. Growing up in the UK, the g slur has been normalised throughout media and in conversations. I hope all of your social media platforms grow big and reach out to a larger audience!

I'm a Turkish person living in Germany, and it makes me happy to see how connected Turkey is to Romani people! I definitely didn't know about these connections before watching the video. I’m from Sweden and I don’t know that much about Romani people but this year my school put up a play about a Romani family in the Swedish suburbs. It got to play a roman guy who faced many problems and later died by taking an over dose in this play. And since then I have been very interested in the culture, the people! I have always seen Romani people from mainly Bulgaria and Romania, sitting outside supermarkets and not having a home here in Sweden. And I have never thought about them. Thank you for educating me with your videos!
