I like how they minimized the effect of the date window by placing it exactly where the "3" would be. It still looks quite symmetrical. I have it in black w/ green lume numerals, and it's a stunner.

Got one of these on the way! I stumbled upon these watches somehow about a year ago I think while looking at orient bambino's and there is something about the sheer simplicity of them that is so extravagant. I like that it looks like a wall clock because it has the essence of everything a clock needs to be. A brand showing its foundation from the outside. It reminds you that life doesn't have to be so serious all the time. And it keeps you grounded. It's something you can always count on being the same plain-jane no matter what you are going through. Neutrality. I also love the ufo saucer aesthetics and the warped hands that curve around the dial. There's really something about this watch that totally draws you in, kind of like the way moth's are attracted to light. Nobody really understands why, but it just works in all the right ways

Used to consider which one to choose among: Junghans Max Bill, Nomos Ludwig, and the Sternglas Naos. End up today with all 3 watches in the collection!!
Bauhaus is super addictive !!! STAY AWAY FROM IT !!!

I had a similar model, but the MEGA version which was quartz with radio sync.. BUT, it wasn't all that. 1) it didn't seem to sync up to the second as it was supposed to. Several seconds off, in fact 2) hands didn't align to the marks and I think there was some slack.. meaning if I tilt watch one direction, you can see the minute hand dip. And, if you tilt the watch in the opposite direction, the hand would dip towards the other side. Have to admit for the cost of the watch and supposed accuracy and refined build a German watch should have. It totally wasn't. Quickly returned the same day it arrived. Maybe I should have just gotten the mechanical version like something like what you got here.
BUT, that was not my first Junghans and the more vintage Meister Telemeter Chronoscope which I used to own was an awesome automatic chronograph and build and performance was a hell of a lot better.

I own a 34mm hand-wound grey dial version for years. I like its look but I don't wear it too much because my core collection (Credor Eichi II/Urban Jurgensen 1140L/Cartier Santos Dumont) is more attractive.

If I had not found a 60s 34mm swiss nivada wich does a perfect job for those 5 days a year I need a restrained classic style dress watch. Yes the accuracy is not that great but to handwound for a day that's that's a none issue.
I would definitely have bought a hand wound max bill. Definitely an icon.

Why do watch people care about whether the crown is imprinted? It costs like $5 to do. It's not a sign of exclusiveness, and on a minimalist watch, it can easily look tacky.

It looks as though the J-MB 38mm needs a large wrist. Because there is so much dial it seems bigger than a 38mm diver or other watch with a substantial bezel.

Great review. I’ve settled on the no date version of this watch but can’t decide between plexiglass and sapphire. It seems the domed sapphire has a greater distortion effect at less than ideal viewing angles. Have you noticed this day to day and does it affect your enjoyment of the watch?

  • @MM-wd6ud

What about the movement? Is it accurate (within 4 to 8 secs per day)?

  • @WatchGeek8167

Sapphire looks really nice on this!! Does it pick up smudges easily? Do you find yourself having to wipe it off often?
I used to own a maxbill Chronoscope with plexiglass crystal. I thought it looked great. Wound up getting rid of it, because the rotor on the chronograph movement was just too loud for my liking. If you’re in a quiet office setting, it can become noisy.
Anyways, I really miss the look of this dial. Was thinking of picking up this exact model. I thought the plexiglass would look better, but after seeing this video, the sapphire looks amazing. I think they did a really good job on it. Way better than I would have expected.
With that said, is the sapphire smudgy? As is the case with other sapphire watches? Have you noticed any “smudginess?”

    • @AverageBros

I owned two Junghans automatic dress wristwatches. It is a well-designed wristwatch. One is gaining minutes and the other is losing minutes. When people made reviews of this watch, they never talked about how accurate the timekeeping of this watch was. It is the worst watch I have ever purchased. The timekeeping of both eyes was never accurate. I would not advise anyone to buy such an expensive wristwatch that is not accurate. The hand-wound version might be different in terms of timekeeping and accuracy I don't know because I didn't own one. I am using this medium to letting the world know that Junghans is producing a watch that is not fit for purpose. 24:49
