    This test is not designed to hurt or be strenuous. Just try it for a second or two to see if you can lift your ring finger. Don't fight your body to do something it can't. If it hurts stop immediately. I take no responsibility for the actions you take during or after this video. I did not "invent" this test. I found it on Instagram and Facebook. I don't have any type of paralysis but I feel this is also a great way for people to get what mental disorders feel like as well. Its (for me at least) that same kind of frustration and helplessness I often feel from my anxiety, depression, and autism. I get told things like "Just be happy". I know how happiness feels, I know what makes me happy but with my depression I usually don't feel happy no matter what. I just feel constantly miserable. "Just suck it up and talk normally in front of class". If Im standing I'm going to be on the ground in seconds. My anxiety causes extreme dizziness and I'm expected to somehow suck it up? "stop crying", "stop shaking", "Just act "normal"" I can't. I just can't. I try, I really do. I'm often telling myself similar things and some days are better than others, but when I can't, then I can't.
    Also that dream thing is crazy because it's the same for me and my mental disorders. Like I don't have panic attacks (unless a nightmare but no normal situations cause them in my dreams) or depressive thoughts nor has any situation related to my disorders ever came up either. I still do behaviors related to my autism (like leg twitching and repetition) but thats different.

    Wow, you just blew my mind about dreaming about being disabled. I often struggle to walk and things in my dreams, but I had those before my disability came about. That "trudge through the mud" feeling. But now, I am almost never disabled in my dreams either. Also! Y'know how sometimes your dreams are influenced by what's happening to your body? (Like, if a kitten is nibbling at your toes, you could dream about alligators chomping at your heels or something?) My feet are CONSTANTLY on fire. I mean, constantly. They even generate heat to the tough. A stranger could feel their heat and would probably even pull back in shock that a person is that hot, lol. But, oddly, I can't think of a single dream I've ever had where my feet are LITERALLY on fire or a dream about fires or heat or something similar, y'know? So interesting.
    And also, really thought the test was cool. I don't have paralysis, but I do have a lot of nerve damage and loss of feeling in places. And, that's led to seveeeeere contracture in my toes (they're like...completely curled up in a ball). And people always ask me to straighten them (doctors mainly). I just stare at them like... huh? I could think and think and use my brain all I want to, but those toes aren't going to budge a mm. That's like asking someone who's tied up in rope to raise their arm. Only, they would feel the resistance as they pushed against the rope. I feel nothing. I just stare at them and watch them... not go anywhere. It's, almost identical to the test, and as close to paralysis as I can imagine. I feel pain in them but they CANNOT move. (Even manually though. If I try to pull em apart with my fingers, they only lift upward at the top most joint. The curled up ball stays fully intact.)
    I only just found you but really appreciate your videos already! (Sorry for the novel!)

      AMEN!! I live with multiple disabilities and have ended up in a wheelchair more than once. I use a cane now because I can't predict when my legs will decide to fold unexpectedly. I know the cane may not prevent my falling and at the same time, I try to make this disability visible so people don't assume I'm a drunk. Very frustrating when confronted with IDIOTS.

    • @adamzaidi1748

      Maybe some people just don't understand. It's not like they're a bad person. They just feel morally wrong because they really don't know what to do or how to treat a paralyzed individual. So don't hate them, instead just educate them.

    • @ruthm3813
      @ruthm3813 5 лет назад

      Adam Zaidi, I do agree. I don't think many people are deliberately being nasty or anything like that, and don't deserve to be called idiots. or be despised. I find that very sad indeed and doesn't help. Oh, and I am subscribed to a few RUclipsrs who are paralysed and in wheelchairs, to try and learn more through their lives and information they share.

    • @adamzaidi1748
      @adamzaidi1748 5 лет назад

      @@ruthm3813 Yes it seems that people just jump to conclusions as if someone's just being mean or nasty when that is not the case at all. If I see someone in a wheelchair trying to enter a door, I'm going to hold the door open for them but I would be quite upset if they were to think I was doing that because I feel sorry for them or I was being rude or nasty.

    When I did this test I was very confused because I have felt this before. When I have panic attacks, if they are moderate to severe, I have this feeling throughout my entire body and I never thought that was what people who were physically paralysed felt like. This definently makes me see my body differently and maybe I'll finally talk to my doctor about it, maybe I can figure out the emotional blockage of movement I experience.

    The reason why you can't lift your ringer finger is because it shares a tendon with the other digit. You'll notice when you open your hand and try to make your fingers touch your palm, those two will both go down together and not separately.

    I technically am paralyzed, I can't move the upper joint in my right pinky. It happened when I was trying to get ice out of an ice tray for my sweet tea, but no pieces were budging. I got a butter knife and cut it along the side of the cube. Everything was fine until the last one (Because I stopped after this one) and it was the hardest to get out. I'm right handed, so I was holding the knife with my right hand which is why it's my right pinky that's paralyzed btw. I tried pushing harder on the knife to see if it'd help, but I'd been picking out ice cubes with my hands after they were loose enough, and some pieces of ice flaked off onto my hands, and then then some stuck to the knife, since I put my hand on it. But ice, being cold water, melts. Having been on my hands and the knife, my hands and the knife were wet. So when I pushed harder my hands slipped and I was holding the knife at just about 90 degrees, so when it slipped it cut right across my lower pinky joint, and a little bit of the left side of my ring finger. I had my pinky in a thick bandage for a couple days, so it was physically impossible to bend it. I immediately starting bending my pinky after, being afraid of paralyzation. I didn't think about moving the uninjured joint, thought it too had been in a thick band aid those days, so I'm guessing the muscles just never grew back properly. I get insults commonly because I stick my pinky out for some things like if im holding something, or when I'm typing on school keyboards, people especially thought it was funny when I was writing or drinking, so I learned how to cross my ring finger over my pinky, manually folding it. Now while this is nowhere near as bad as what's happened to many people it's still an inconvenience for me, and I thought you might like to read. :)
    Edit: OH OKAY I HAVE A HEART NOW WOW THANKS

    • @paulgascoigne5343
      @paulgascoigne5343 6 лет назад +1

      SunFlowerDoggo wow, thats quite an interesting story actually. Quite often, normal everyday things we do can result in injury.
      My pinky on my right hand was broken and stuck out at 90 angle which wad quite disconcerting at the time lol. After mending it ended up deformed so the last joint is at a 45 angle. The problem being, when I make a fist it puts considerable pressure on it as the ligaments pull it which create a vice like pain. So writing with a pen or pencil is painful indeed, I can manage a little but then have to have a break for a while.. I've often toyed with the idea of having it therapeutically amputated as it gets in the way lol. It can't be rebroken and set because the joint itself was smashed, so it would otherwise just stick out all the while.
      Funny how a little thing such as a finger can cause so much hassle!

    I have cerebral palsy (non-wheelchair user). I have been watching your videos for a while now. A few points that you have made also have happened with me. One of them is dreams - In fact I had a dream last night - and I was running... Something that I have never been able to do. In the dream I was full on marathon running for some reason. It was really strange.
    And as for muscle mass - as someone who can use their legs - I can touch finger to finger around my ankles as well. (I think part of the slimmer legs is connected to CP - I thought I read that somewhere).

  • @MissMelissa1313

    I could still lift up my ringfinger. However I know another one of these tricks that I cannot do.
    Okay so you put your hands together as if you are praying
    Then you fold your middlefingers over eachother, and leave the other fingertips touching
    Now try to separate your ringfingers WITHOUT moving any of the other fingers and while keeping your middle fingers down.
    Thank you for the information you put out here. It is very interesting to see how you live and what challenges you face that I wouldn't even possibly think could be a challenge because I am not disabled.

    T10 complete. Yes, my legs feel like they tingle, but a painfull tingle. Also a feeling like my legs are burning. This does not include the pain in my back near the injury point. Only way to experiance that is to, say, smash your finger continuously. And no, pain meds do not and never will get rid of the constant pain, just takes the sharp edge off, on a good day. As you mentioned, everyone is differant. My legs shrunk very little. So they remain heavy which is a problem itself. Course one who is not paralized should go through our daily care including bowel care. And dressing.

    I'm a C4-5 incomplete quadriplegic with use of my whole body but I can't walk and I have limited mobility. The way I explain it is like trying to stand up quickly with pins and needles in your legs after you've been sitting in a funny position for too long. That mixed with the feeling or sore feet after standing all day. That's not exactly what it's like for me but it's close

    I have learned about Spsasm. The hospital kind of forgot to tell me about them. I don't dream much never did, but now I have a dream where I am back in the jungle running for my life. My legs feel like they are asleep But the funny thing is I used to wear knee braces. I can still feel them on my knees. when they are not, I don't wear them now.

    I have no feeling from my belly button down... No movement or no feeling. I sometimes walk in my dreams and I can feel Carpet and hardwood floor in my dream. Its usually the anniversary of me becoming paralyzed. I was 7. I do ask people what does Carpet on your feet feel like or sand. People say put your hand on the carpet or sand. I know it's not the same as feeling it on your feet.

    So I tried this (my mother broke her neck a few years ago, thankfully she recovered after multiple surgeries. Only spent almost 3 years with difficulty with the left side of her body. So from that standpoint she was lucky but I always wondered what it's like.) Anyways (rambling aside) I tried this, and my finger felt extremely heavy. Like the muscles were trying, and if I tried super, super hard I could lift it maybe a centimeter or so. I remember my mother said she felt pins and needles, and she still feels burning in her legs to this day. But when it comes to your leg or foot specifically, I'm curious
    If you try to lift your foot with your ankle, does it feel like the muscles are trying but it's just too heavy? Or do the muscles do literally nothing at all no matter how hard you try to lift your foot up? (Almost like someone would lift their foot to tap on the floor). I recently watched a video where someone was a quadriplegic, however with enough physical therapy they were able to overcome it. Does it feel like it's something you could eventually overcome? Or are you sure as shit there's no chance?
    It's one of those things to me, much like drugs. You can try to explain how it feels, but until you actually experience it first hand you have no idea how it feels. So i'm just trying to get a general idea.
    So i guess, to sum it up, if you attempt to lift your foot with your ankle, or even move your entire lower leg with your knee, how does it feel? Are you even able to lift it just a half an inch or not at all? And how does it differentiate between trying to move your ankle, and trying to move your entire lower leg below the knee, or is it the exact same feeling/sensation, no matter if it's your ankle, or your lower leg, or is it two completely different sensations? How was it before you lost the muscle mass in your legs due to being paralyzed? Was it easier/harder then, versus now? Or the exact same?
    The test you provided made me assume the limbs feel extremely heavy, like you don't have the muscle available to lift it up. So, I was curious and wanted to clarify. Which also makes me wonder, if it does feel like heavy limbs, would it be easier before the muscle wasting away took place? Or make no difference?
    I'm sure it's case by case basis, however the general concept of paralysis still remains the same. So, just figured I'd throw some of my questions your way.

    Hi Wheelsnoheels! U mentioned that u talked to a lot of paralyzed people about their dreams & when they dreamed they usual dreamed they were able-bodied. I wonder if there would be a difference in the dreams of people who were born paralyzed versus those who had some sort of injury or illness that made walking difficult / impossible but had been "able-bodied" before.

    • @Wheelsnoheels

    • @DrFranklynAnderson

      Can confirm! I was born with spina bifida, and even in dreams I have no freaking clue what walking feels like. 😂 I used to think I either crawled or swam through the air whenever I dreamed (I rarely remember details when I wake) but then I had one where I went up a hill and my arms/shoulders got tired, so I guess I must have been in my ‘chair. 🤷‍♀️
