Wow, you look gorgeous and in line with yourself today! Your hair drawn back in a gray band ties in beautifully with your ensemble. You make some excellent points that only come with getting clearer in your own knowing. Thanks Dory.
I just had the same strong reaction as I did in the other video to you also having completely swept back hair and light circle earrings that size. I find it so pretty and fresh on you!! In that video I loved the very simple solid top (winter/4 or spring/1 simplicity) on you, yet I also love this soft, flowy summer/2 on you! You're right, you look great in gray.
I like the Zyla summer colors for you. I just do not see the spring at all. However, its through video, so you should trust you first. They are very pretty. I am still confused about how to DIY Zyla, but I noticed all my DIY signature colors are in my Spring pallette.
I agree with your frustration with not be able to get help or discuss openly on their website or FB. I've been continually told that I have to determine my type myself and get directed back to the books, and videos, etc. Yet, I've seen people on the FB type pages that are clearly not that that type and it confuses me. Also, no one can tell you what type you are - except Carol (because she created the system).... ????? I'm still uncertain as to what colors look good on me or what palette I should wear. Going back to my childhood as she instructs is useless to me. I have no pics of myself and few memories...and no family to ask questions of. very, very frustrating. In the end, I've spent a ton of money and gotten very little in return.
and to top it all off...if anyone in that system sees this post I will probably be banned or removed from the FB groups. :( All I ever wanted was to know what colors would look the best on me...that's it!
Eileen Kaleel - I understand your frustration with Carol's system... it drove me crazy for years!! I also van relate to seeing the women on the FB page that are clearly not that type, yet they are encouraged and told they look amazing. It is very frustrating. Have you done a Briggs Meyers free personality quiz? If so, and you don't mind sharing, what were your results?
Eileen, wear what you love and feel pretty, confident, comfortable or happy, joyful or however you feel that day. No one should tell you what you must wear to be you. You are unique.
@@eileenkaleel Hi Eileen I checked your channel and saw you promoting your work you couldn't be anything but a type 3 dominant. But I think you figured that out by your profile pick.
Seriously Melissa? You see one video of a stranger and know she "couldn't be anything other than a" whatever! This is the kind of dogmatism that causes so much confusion and difficulty.
Thank you for your feedback. I think David's colors do work for me until I get very tan. Then they are too cool. My skin tone is olive/warm, so once it darkens, I need warmer colors to balance it.
I agree with Heidi. I found your videos while researching Zyla - it is almost startling to see how his colors make you glow. You have sold me on his system! Unfortunately I’ll have to wait for a consultation due to Covid.
With respect to the personal preferences of Dory, since she gets final say over the colours she wears... I totally agree with you, Heidi (and with C S as well). I wasn't really feeling the first colours on screen (looked too warm and bright, seemed disconnected from the person in the frame), and then when the Zyla colours came up next to her face I gasped. I honestly thought this video was going to be about showing how Zyla gets it right even when no one else does. Then turns out that's the opposite of Dory's opinion, haha. Oh well indeed. What I'm taking away from this video is that if I ever get a chance to see Zyla, I should take his advice even if it "feels" wrong to me. Because maybe sometimes we have a block when it comes to seeing ourselves, whereas it's easier to see what works for other people. (E.g. I know I'd be worried Zyla might give me a 'boring' feeling palette... but if he did, I'm sure it would actually make me glow in comparison, so I should take his advice.) So far, Zyla just seems to be nothing but perfect on every single palette I see him do for someone. Dory absolutely came to life when his colours appeared next to her, and I was sorry to hear she'll be avoiding them. Again though, what she wears is up to her. Definitely served as an accidental advertisement for Zyla for me, though!
Dory, you look beautiful and so alive here! I, too, have been every season depending on the time of year. However, I know that I have a slightly neutral skin tone with slight pink undertones. Some of the t1 colors worked for me, but not all of them. I'm kind of doing my own thing now by wearing some of the clear winter colors and slightly toned down. As I mentioned in another message to you, I have quit DYT for several reasons. Ultimately, it's what color a person feels fabulous in that should determine if it's the "right" color.
Thank you Michelle! Interestingly enough, the top in this video does not match my spring palette - lol. I have gotten a lot of compliments on it, but to put it into context, it resonates with the type 2 card in DYT - lol. Not exactly though because the base color is black. It would probably be a soft winter color in the 16 seasons. I also know that I can borrow colors from other seasons and like you my skin tone is slightly cool (pinkish). I finally found a great foundation match, and it is rose beige... just as David Zyla said it was.... lol.... Also, like you, I have been playing around lately with bright winter colors, but softened (soft winter maybe) and I am going to try, with the knowledge I have gained over the years, to create my own palette based on me and not any seasons... :) Sounds like you are doing the same! I wish us both luck!! ;)
Thank you. I found this most helpful as I have the same issue as you. So many analyses and so many different results. Looking forward to your other videos. 😘
I couldn't get comfortable with DYT because the colors didn't suit me. You look lovely in gray...your coloring is unique, especially with a tan. My hair is transitioning from brunette to silver/white and colors I couldn't wear before now look good. I am not able to wear cream or yellow based off-whites anymore (they were my favorites) and brown doesn't work anymore. I've never had my colors done so watching your journey has been very enlightening. Thank you. Looking forward to the next video. p.s. I also can wear both silver and gold. DYT just didn't work for me
Just found this video, I’ve used several color systems myself-bottom line I wear what I think flatters me. I’m probably a type 3/2 in DYT, I’ve had color me beautiful people argue over me --spring/fall/winter 😂. In the end it’s what makes you feel beautiful 🌸👍🏻
First time watching, new subscriber. So glad I found your channel, thank you so much for posting. I have typed myself as a 4/2 in the DYT system and share your concerns about it. I have also tried other color systems and have not been satisfied with them, so I hope to pursue some of the resources you have tried and will let you know if they help. Not only are you very well-spoken, you are so fresh-looking and beautiful... truly a pleasure to behold. Blessings.
Dory's Helpful Hints I wrote the above comment before watching your most recent video on hair and shoe color, where I put a comment about Irenee Riter, who I think has been the most helpful to me of all the analyses I've had done. Where I seem to have a lot of difficulty is finding "my" colors in the stores. I live in a small town so my try on resources are limited (many of our anchor stores have closed). The other issue I have is that I think my colors have changed as I've aged and there aren't many colorists who address that. Any suggestions for me? I am considering John Kichner.
I love John!! He was the person I saw last and I feel he has been the most accurate as far as my colors are concerned. He is well worth the investment.
I am a 4/2 in the DYT system. I think it's a fabulous system. I don't overthink it. I take what works for me and I don't delve too deep into what feels uncomfortable to me. I wear what I feel and look good in, but I pay more attention to their recommendations. Life is about more than how we look...
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I think the consensus is that I am either a spring/summer or a summer/spring. Where I feel I belong depends on the day! lol
I agree. I think the Caygill ones are pretty colours (like all colours are). But when they're onscreen I look at the colours and think 'I guess those could be pretty colours in the right context'. Whereas when the Zyla colours are on screen, my eyes go to Dory's harmonized face and I think 'Wow what a beautiful woman.' Which to me is the goal of colours in style, to really bring life to the person's face. It's not about whether the colours themselves look more stereotypically 'alive' in isolation. The Caygill might be technically brighter here, but to my eye her face looks less bright compared to those colours, whereas the Zyla actually brighten and enliven Dory's face. I know she mentioned feeling like the Zyla colours make her look 10 years older, but I don't see that at all, and wonder if that may be more of a psychological effect when we associate brighter colours with youth and assume more dusky/faded colours look older, and we're especially nervous about an effect when it's on ourselves. Anyway though, not to belabour the point... but I hope Dory eventually returns to this Zyla palette. Maybe in 10 years! :D
I think you're definitely on the right track. I have big issues with dyt as well. I totally disagree with the palettes and don't think the clothes they offer are attractive or flattering. Nor do I like the personality aspect. It's a very confusing system. I feel like people are forced to accept a certain type, and live within the confines of that type, like it or not. I am interested in carols studies on energies. I'm a spring too but my palette from another system has more colors than yours. All are warm undertones. I love grey too. It feels good! Try a soft clear warm yellow. It might work for you.
Dory's Helpful Hints I love a warm sunny yellow and probably get away with it because I'm blonde. But no one raves when I wear it. Haha. But I refuse to give it up. I have finally given up lime green. My daughter is a strong winter and can wear great colors. In which I look dreadful. It's all so interesting. Color has great power.
Penelope.. It's the ' personality' aspect of DYT that confuses me. I made a hyperbolic video of the all the DYT Types.(Which Dory has seen.) It was based on a video that DYT had produced of a woman portraying all the types.. and acting them out... My video was removed from the DYT Group and I then removed myself from the DYT group and have never participated in that specific forum. My intention was not to offend.. but several people kept suggesting that I was a type that didn't and still doesn't resonate with me. I have purchased a few clothing items from DYT that I love. Like you, I am interested in Carols studies on energies and that has helped me to understand people a bit better.
Spring and dusk summer gets confused because the sub-type Dusk Summer has WARMER summer colours and just looking at you Zyla is correct Give the Zyla palette a go because it will make you shine
With DYT, I think the premise is not if the color actually works but that your energy type will carry it off, that it will “seem” to work because your energy will be congruent with the color. I think. Maybe adding that maybe the snake the key is to use there thoughts about the structure, fabrics, etc. for type one but use it with the colors that work for you? I’m not taking sides. I’m just wondering if that might be a way to blend the energy aspect which can also be Inc via clothing, lines, clothing, materials, etc. with your actual colors.
Hello, Dory! It's been a few more years so thought I'd check in and see if you're still wearing Spring colors. I suppose that you haven't gone back to the DYT program. I'm still kind of doing my own thing; am wearing mostly Summer colors. That being said, some soft Autumn, light/medium Spring, and even some mid-range Winter colors appear in my wardrobe. It basically comes down to what I feel comfortable wearing and knowing what colors work for me. I've decided that if I work from a seasonal color palette I can branch off from there. Keeping the contrast level correct for me (medium-light) helps to keep many colors a "YES" for me. Anyway, I'm interested in where you are in your color journey.
Hi Michelle, I have been mostly taking care of my Granddaughter. lol But as for colors, I have had several more palettes done and the most recent was bright spring. However, I find that dressing to fit my mood works the best for me. If I am not feeling light, light colors feel off. I do colors from every season now. I had a consult with a makeup artist. I am warm/neutral-warm. Especially in Summer when I am tan. So I seem to focus on soft autumn or soft summer with some winter and spring thrown in on occasion. The makeup artist said she was familiar with seasonal color analysis, but didn't follow it because people can wear warm and cool colors and limiting someone that way was not necessary. I agree. :) I also agree that as long as the contrast level is right and you keep your best colors - regardless of season, next to your face, you can't go wrong. :)
That's interesting that you have gray eyes. Not many people have gray eyes. I have green eyes and everyone tells me I am a warm Spring. What do you mean by "early Spring"? I've never heard that before. I agree with you that in person should be the best analysis.
So an early spring is a mix of spring and summer in the eyes of many. In the Caygill system, an early spring is just moving away from winter. The thaw has started, but the ice has not completely melted... think of crocuses poking their heads up through the snow... so still a touch of winter but lighter.
Your skin hair and eyes are almost exactly like mine. The colors that work best for me are light summer. I can see you as a light spring or light summer easily!
I wish Beauty for All Seasons was still around. I think you would have gotten a lot from the system. I had mine done with a big group of women from work. The color analyst came with color cards that had hole punches in them. The first thing the matches for was your skin town, then hair, and then eyes. The point of the BFAS system was you can always wear your hair color, eye color, and skin color no water what you season. The also categorizes me by over all tonal value and contrast. It was really good. By the way, I’m a spring and I can wear copper, gold, and silver 😀
I recently got back into DYT, and I agree with you, it is too restrictive and limiting. I get reprimanded by Carol Tuttle on FB and my comments deleted if I say I don’t like a color or the colors in my so called type 1.
I wish I could say that I thought they could learn from the complaints of their customers but unfortunately, I am afraid that Carol is as rigid as "her" system.
I recently decided that it feels very cultish in particular to what you mean. If you can't ask a question or bring up a concern without being reprimanded, shamed about your "type" making you question or whine to them, or getting blocked instead of responding to your concern/question with a reasonable explanation like any mature woman deserves. It simply gives a cult vibe! Especially after often being told that we aren't being "honored".
Just come across you. I have recently joined Dressing Your Truth and was Cluebombed by Carol as a Type 1. Have you tried wearing those colours, styles and fabrics she suggests for a month? I have limited resources at present but I can see a difference. I feel as if a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I too like my silver jewellery, have no gold, but you can try costume jewellery.
You look so pretty in this video, Dory. Even the quilt seems to harmonize with you. Do you happen to remember what lipstick you used ? Your skin looks lovely.
Thank you! I'm so glad you finally figured it out. Your skin looks so smooth and clear in this video. Looking back, the dark muted colors now look too heavy on you.
Zyla’a system, and many others, doesn’t work because color analysis is based on your face reacts to a color. Your personal coloring can sometimes point in the right direction but not always as this video highlights.
Rochele is in Atlanta and you can find her on this website... colorbyrochele.com/color-services/ Jennifer Butler is in California and her website is jenniferbutlercolor.com/ I don't know which is closer to you but I feel that both would do an amazing job for you. Last time I checked.... Jennifer charges $1000.00 and Rochele charges $600. Hope this helps!!
Dory, Impressive. I really admire your dedication to get ' closure' regarding the color/ season/ typing systems. "Couldn't help but laugh at your confession...." It pains me greatly to say this .is Dressing your Truth" .. which means that Carol was correct.. lol" . I understand the frustration with DYT. There are such restrictions within the on-line communities. And yet, I suppose they must have boundaries/ guidelines to prevent others from questioning their authority or perhaps from getting too confused.. And yet, I don't understand how just your facial structure can determine your coloring. Tis a puzzlement to me. I do understand how facial structure/ skin type can assist in the lines and textures of garments that would look best on an individual. The color chart you have from Rochele is stunning & it appears to have a combination of T1/T2 colors.. ( I could be wrong about that.. just an observation from what I could see)
LadyGrace how can DYT not consider eye color and hair color or skin tone when deciding what looks good on a person? Face it DYT is a made-up system and Carol Tuttle has made a business for herself and her family. That is my come away, anyway. I think I have just woke up. I almost donated some of my lovely clothing and shoes just beacuse they don’t fit into that limited idea of what I should and should not wear.
Clear spring looks about right, or just clear (bright) if you have a more neutral skin tone. I don't think dressing your truth states every single color in your palette looks great on you.
It just drives me crazy how every system mixes warm and cool colors on the same palette. I see several cool colors that will never work for you on your palettes. Your skin looks to be is on the muted or muddy side which works with muted colors or the correct clear ones. David’s choices are indeed hugely off. All cool and greyed. Regarding DYT... there is no way that personality type can determine which colors blend with skin tone. The two are not at all related. Also hair color is not a determining factor. It’s all about skin color undertone and other skin properties. DYT also mixes cool and warm colors on each of their palettes.
I largely agree. The hair color does factor in when you are looking at contrast level however. In several systems, contrast level is taken into consideration when determining season.
Why is there confusion between Summer and Spring? Summer is cool undertone and Spring is warm. Yes there you go! I wrote it before listening to the video: dusky summer
The palette in this video was done by Rochelle Hirsch and the palette that I compare it to from David Zyla was done by David Zyla. Which palette doesn't match with me?
Not defending anyone, but that is not the way to use DYT Style kit. You should see if it harmonizes and nothing else. Regarding the grays, I don't know because I never liked them. I'm 1/2 and it totally works for me. It was interesting to see you in gray.
Hi Dory. I love watching your videos while doing your research. I feel that I am just as confused as you are. I am interested in your colouring and features. I think I am also a Type 1. But still confused. I am also a vibrant Spring - Early Spring Playful Princess. Not sure how correct that is. I'm sure that I can only be a Spring. My hair is light brown and I have green eyes. I think with your darker hair colouring David thought that you could pull off a more vibrant and deep colour. In my opinion only, I feel that you are being too mean to blue and yellow. I think that blue would look great with your eyes. Probably not have the contrast to make them pop , but just blend in. The yellow being a primary colour with blue I think would look great on you. I love your name also. My great grandmother was Dora. I'm trying to figure out if ethnicity has anything to do with colours. I am exactly half German and half Ukrainian. I feel like there was some type of battle happening with my DNA. Check out videos by Jen Thoden. She does not use the colour system but instead uses bright, clear, warm, soft, bold, ect.
You are absolutely right! I AM shocked at how obviously wrong Zyla was. But those colors were awful IMO. I think your Caygill palette looked great! NEVER go against yourself. Thanks for the eye-opening. I never resonated w the limits of the Dressing Your Truth system, but mine was still a DIY endeavor. I stick w Zyla but only bc I'm older, already have been considering my seasons and colors for decades, and I can work his DIY fairly well. I'm a soft/mellow autumn but I think I'll subscribe for now anyway lol.
Do you use self tanner? I see some lighter places on your skin - could be why the confusion about grey and other non-spring colors. You go through a LOT of trouble trying to disprove all the programs, when most work for most people. I particularly like DYT, and I believe if Carol says you're a 1, well you're a 1. So, you obviously don't want to give up your grey whether it looks good or not. Maybe that's the type-jumping thing Carol says type 1's do, because they want all the options open to them. It's really not this complicated. Forgive me being opinionated but you've been at it so long, I just don't think you want the help given.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I do not use self tanner, I live in the South so I have no need of those. My tan is pretty even as far as I can tell. As for the gray.... I get compliments everytime I wear it.... and I mean everytime.... my husband thinks it's funny because the outfit is nothing special... It can be light heather gray, or deep charcoal gray, and somebody will stop me and tell me how good I look.... So, while I respect your opinion as to the viability of these systems, I myself disagree. I also think the best help I can give women is a venue where it is explained why, when they are struggling to follow a set of rules given to them by somebody else and it doesn't work, the fault is not with them. These systems say they are trying to empower women. However, in my opinion, I believe that in more cases then some would like to believe, instead of empowering women, when these systems do not work, they serve instead to undermine the confidence of the very women they say they are trying to help. The end the result, unfortunately is that these women then begin to doubt what they believe to be true about themselves. They need to know that nothing trumps what feels good and right to them, no matter what anybody else says. They need to know it is ok to disagree with "the expert." As far as my making it complicated.... I tend to go very deep into systems. I believe in Carol's system that would make me a type 4. She has said in the past that a type 1 would never stay with something that long. For me this has been a six year journey.... and believe me.... I have gone very deep into all things color!!!
I think a lot of it had to do with the room he was in. He usually books a suite, but they were remodeling the hotel so in order to get the right side of the building for the light, he had to have a room with a set up that put the light behind me. Lighting is key to getting the right colors. :)
I think you've found the perfect colors for YOU!! The grays look fantastic on you.

The Zyla palette really shows you for you, I feel you hide behind the Caygill one. That’s just my opinion.

Agree. I'm a bright spring, and those Zyla colours she's demonstrated are definitely my best.
Dusk Summer?
I think you a “clearly” an early spring, probably the iciest a warm/neutral person can be
I think you're definitely on the right track.
Penelope Lambson I have tried many yellows, and in general, yellow is not one of my best colors, although it is my favorite color. :)
Penelope Lambson Color does have great power. We should all use it wisely! :)
Spring and dusk summer gets confused because the sub-type Dusk Summer has WARMER summer colours and just looking at you Zyla is correct
Give the Zyla palette a go because it will make you shine
spend time with yourself and you know what colors reflect you
Interesting what you say about online typing skewing cool - that has been my experience!
I think your a type 2 ☺ muted colours look good on you!
Thank you! I find that I have not been able to give up my grays even after getting this consultation. :)
I have heard of that system. It is very similiar to the Caygill system and what David Zyla does. :)
Great share of your palettes. The yellow patchwork background is very distracting however.
I am glad I did not get rid of all the clothing I love. I get compliments even though DYT says nay nay, lol.
Thanks so much!! The lipstick I use is called Exotic and it is made by Mineral fusion. :)
Hi Dory, Love the videos. Whom can I contact for the Suzanne Caygill system to get my palette done?
Rochele is in Atlanta and you can find her on this website... colorbyrochele.com/color-services/ Jennifer Butler is in California and her website is jenniferbutlercolor.com/ I don't know which is closer to you but I feel that both would do an amazing job for you. Last time I checked.... Jennifer charges $1000.00 and Rochele charges $600. Hope this helps!!
Dory's Helpful Hints I'm in Philly so I would have to do online regardless. Thanks for the info!!!
Your hair is so cute!!!!
I wrote it before listening to the video: dusky summer
who did Zyla palette for you? it'snt match to face at this video.
The palette in this video was done by Rochelle Hirsch and the palette that I compare it to from David Zyla was done by David Zyla. Which palette doesn't match with me?
The problem with Rochelle’s palette is that we see the colours before seeing YOU
Not defending anyone, but that is not the way to use DYT Style kit. You should see if it harmonizes and nothing else. Regarding the grays, I don't know because I never liked them. I'm 1/2 and it totally works for me. It was interesting to see you in gray.
Your Suzanne Caygill pallete look great!!!
Its just unfortunate you got mistyped as a Spring/Warm.
I couldn't agree more with your assessment of dyt! Very dictatorial. Also I really don't agree with this color and personality correlation she pushes!
They need to know it is ok to disagree with "the expert."
As far as my making it complicated.... I tend to go very deep into systems. I believe in Carol's system that would make me a type 4. She has said in the past that a type 1 would never stay with something that long. For me this has been a six year journey.... and believe me.... I have gone very deep into all things color!!!
I've never seen a Zyla palette so off...
I think a lot of it had to do with the room he was in. He usually books a suite, but they were remodeling the hotel so in order to get the right side of the building for the light, he had to have a room with a set up that put the light behind me. Lighting is key to getting the right colors. :)
