Here I discuss the difference in John's system and the Dressing Your Truth System and why the DYT system has flaws. I got my palette from John after my palette with Rochelle because I really needed to have two consultants agree. Which they did in that I am a "Lively Bright," or a "Spring" in Suzanne's system. :)

Tawny Autumn - Review of the Suzanne Caygill color system
I agree with you that the concept of season is irrelevant for an individual palette. I’m really mystified by your dislike of the Zyla colors and the idea of purple and plum. You have purples in your Caygill palette that you don’t comment on. Have you tried getting larger swatches of the Zyla colors? You may not really see the Zyla colors accurately in the small chip because of color relativity. The white card background and the other colors on the card influence what you think a swatch looks like. Josef Albers made a career out of studying this and it’s why color matching in manufacturing requires a lot of specialized equipment and lighting. What you think is a match when you shop may not actually be a match. If you’re trying clothes on in dressing room lighting you’re not getting an accurate idea of what they look like on you because the color rendering index of indoor commercial lighting is usually very low. You wear a Zyla romantic in one of your other videos and look like a movie star in it. Also I think you misunderstand Zyla’s color categories. Tranquil is still technically a “power color” for you-in that it’s one of your best most eye catching colors. Its message is powerful calm and social receptivity. Compared to your dramatic, it’s going to give less boss, center of attention vibes. They’re both great, high energy colors. I think of dramatic as who your eye would drift to in a crowd. It’s the highest color contrast color with your color gestalt that flatters you. I think if you compare yourself in Zyla tranquil and dramatic side by side, you’ll see the difference.
Are you still wholly dissatisfied with your Zyla palette? Your Zyla romantics are like your Kirchner plums. Your darkest “ocean blues” also lean violet like your Zyla palette. I find some of the Kirchner and Caygill warm orange reds you’ve gotten cheerful, but to me they advance in front of you and I see them first. They don’t foreground you like the Zyla colors do.
The plaid shirt looks perfect. The t-shirt appears brighter than John's more pink romantic page for you. I love John. He did my colors, as well. Thanks for sharing.
Agree just in a half - not a „yes sayer“ by nature and this has nothing to do with my education. 😂 The color system of DYT is a bit restrictive. I figured this out myself. So, when Carol (in Color System she may be a dark or warm autumn) for herself can wear all the deep warm to dark shades, another type 3 (who maybe would be a soft autumn or soft summer) just can’t. But use then just the lighter to neutral shades. Now it could be like you said that a person who would be a 1 or 3 according to the DYT system is a cool type like cool summer or winter. If this is really the case just integrate more the colors of your secondary type. But for example that certain colors don’t correspond with certain movements sounds logic. Black for example is still and so it shouldn’t be worn especially by the types 1 and 3. And also the colors system don’t recommend a true black for all types, but more anthrazit and dark grey to gray brownish tones to substitute. And then there are also contrasts, garments and patterns important to express personal movements. Not only colors. To close this out, I think to type a person based on their natural movements and original behavior as well as face structures makes way more sense than the kibbe system for example. I tried this system for years and couldn’t find my true type.
Who did this palette for you? I really like it.
T1 energy people are bubbly, light hearted, random. Not deep thinkers. And so are their colors. The colors no matter if warm or cool. They all have a bit white in it. It's called a tinted color. They maches their light youthful energy. The face shape almost is round, heart shaped with bgight smiley eyes, pillow lips and when they smile the whole face smiles. They have apple cheecks. Gold looks better with her warm energy. T2 are slow energy. they have a calm energy. They make a plan, overthinking all, are sensitive with persons. Their colors all have a bit grey in it. Their face shapes are elongated, oval. Dropped are they eyes, The face color is blended in neck. T3 s are full of energy, are determined active persons, wift, roughed in the face. They have sharp lines in the face, irregular hair line. V- eyebrows. V shape face shape. Their colors have bit black in it to darken the color and make them rich. Their energy is hot like a fire. So are their colors and jewellery. T4 s are logical cool thinkers, their own authority, the face shape is perfect symmetric. A elongated oval, with rounded hsirline, a square with straight hairline. The Eyebrows are straight or oval. They eyes are in a straight line. The mouth is straight even when they are smiling. A broughter nose bridge. Their colors are the same clear energy. Pure colors.
The Dressing Your Truth System is not about the perfect colors for the skin, it's about the Energy Txpes. I never typed you as a 1. Because yo analyze so in the depht. I guess you could be a 2. One of the summer types.
You are bright. Pamela is right.
Clear spring looks about right, or just clear (bright) if you have a more neutral skin tone. I don't think dressing your truth states every single color in your palette looks great on you.
Connect / disconnect, that's t1. You seem to be looking for the perfect system. Perhaps you have a secondary 4.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience with Dressing Your Truth!
Hi, Dory, I am not crazy about this video because it strikes me as being too negative. Color analysis should not be a rigid system, but rather a guide. I'm a type 1 as well and have been analyzed as cool tonal and summer. There are many cool-toned colors in the t1 palette. I like the idea of tints rather than tones if you are not particularly soft in coloring. The type 1 palette does not equate exactly to spring. (I have been trained in seasonal and tonal color analysis and do both). It equates more to a "light" tonal palette. It has pastel, medium, and deeper tones such as a lighter navy and lighter purple. The colors are not muddied; they are softened only with white rather than gray. What is your secondary energy type? Mine is 2. I figured it out on my own. The 2 palette is like soft summer, but also like the soft tonal because it contains some "warm" colors. I would not wear gold or obviously warm colors because it would not be becoming to my cool undertone, but there are many t1 colors which would work well for me. The palette, like seasonal and tonal palettes, are not meant to be exact, just a guide. Carol is trying to teach about something that is more than skin deep - your natural energy tendencies. I have found what she teaches very helpful to me, and also entertaining. As an open minded t1, I believe in "both/and", not "either/or"! Why restrict your choices?
That grey is a grest colour for you and the make up is perfect.
What you mean is your skin overtone. For colour analysis it doesnt matter. It's only about your undertone. He reacts to any colours against your skin. You have a olive, yellowish tanned skin, but the undertone is cool. Your daughter has a pinkish overtone, but her undertone could be warm or cool.
You are cool. The hair has a greyer tone. The skin is tanned with olive overtone but cool undertone. In warm colors your skin looks more yellowish but not in a good way like a warm season. You could be a cool summer, cool winter or a deep winter. Today colour analysis is more exactly than in the past. You can find 12 tone analysis and more by Color Me Beautiful, the originator of colour analysis. There are much books about.
Never, never do a analysis in sunlight. The best light is in north direction.
I'll type you! You are a four primary! Logically energised, articulate and thought through. Painstaking over getting it right and sadly your own authority has been weakened by the system we are born into so u aren't trusting yourself. DYT is very rigid and non flexible for people with a mutable character it can seem impossible to place u in one type only. still i believe it is clear to others who know the guidelines of Dyt what type you first lead with. Thank you for sharing your mind about DYT i think the more others study it and highlight its problems no system is perfect the easier it is to use, benefit from and then let it go and just relax into being yourself. And i see three as your secondary. I see your powerful critique of the system and just the medicine Carol needs.
I know this is an old video. I found you because I am a DYT T3, questioning things. I have been following DYT for 10 years. I do love the colors I wear but there is a constant unease I feel between the DYT colors and my eyes and hair. My eyes like yours are blue/green/gray depending on light, my clothing, etc. My hair is an ashy taupe brown. DYT's advice is to color my hair to match my type. Honestly I hate dealing with the grow out where the roots are in sharp contrast to my natural hair color. Anyway, I'm just feeling an unease. Found your video and everything you said makes a lot of sense to me. I'm not going to jump in and change everything but you have definitely given me things to think about. Thank you.
I’ve used the Style Yourself Confidence website as a man. Very helpful!
Ok I've watched both and I definitely feel like the dark and muted (tawny) colors were best. Blending with your overall look. I definitely think the deep teal blue is beautiful on you, it blends your skin, fits with your hair and makes your eyes pop! For the lighter ones I would choose the salmons and oranges (the warmest colors)
Thank you. I found this most helpful as I have the same issue as you. So many analyses and so many different results. Looking forward to your other videos. 😘
Is that lipstick right for you?
plz be careful with natural stones jewellery/phone accessories as some may be hazardous like the so called "zebra jasper", which is actually chrysotile asbestos. It's best to google what it looks like and avoid, as many sellers don't even know what exactly they're selling.
What I’m guessing is that David is extremely intuitive. The other colours are very close to your real colours but David has chosen a series of blues that interact with your skin colour as well. Have a look at the work of Josef Albers with regard to colours relative to other colours.
It’s very interesting because with that maroon colour you are wearing I thought your eyes were green
Its just unfortunate you got mistyped as a Spring/Warm.
The problem with Rochelle’s palette is that we see the colours before seeing YOU
Spring and dusk summer gets confused because the sub-type Dusk Summer has WARMER summer colours and just looking at you Zyla is correct Give the Zyla palette a go because it will make you shine
Why is there confusion between Summer and Spring? Summer is cool undertone and Spring is warm. Yes there you go! I wrote it before listening to the video: dusky summer
I appreciate your video reviews showing how the colors look with you, also explaining them
Anything grey .. noooo. Autumn colors noooo.Black noooo.. the red, pinks, aqua green🎉🎉🎉🎉maybe you would say bright colors??
You have beautiful style
I was typed in person as a winter twice and John did my palette recently and I’m earthy rich. I immediately loved my colors although I only had maybe two things in my wardrobe in those colors. John is amazing
Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you so much 🥰
You look to me like a type 4! but what do I know. I"m a type 1 who doesn't' wear yellow but I love the bright pastels! the secondary type affects things, too. I"m a 1-2.
A lot of the warm cool tricks are for people of European descent. As a cool olive, none of the tests work
Hello, Dory! It's been a few more years so thought I'd check in and see if you're still wearing Spring colors. I suppose that you haven't gone back to the DYT program. I'm still kind of doing my own thing; am wearing mostly Summer colors. That being said, some soft Autumn, light/medium Spring, and even some mid-range Winter colors appear in my wardrobe. It basically comes down to what I feel comfortable wearing and knowing what colors work for me. I've decided that if I work from a seasonal color palette I can branch off from there. Keeping the contrast level correct for me (medium-light) helps to keep many colors a "YES" for me. Anyway, I'm interested in where you are in your color journey.
Hi Michelle, I have been mostly taking care of my Granddaughter. lol But as for colors, I have had several more palettes done and the most recent was bright spring. However, I find that dressing to fit my mood works the best for me. If I am not feeling light, light colors feel off. I do colors from every season now. I had a consult with a makeup artist. I am warm/neutral-warm. Especially in Summer when I am tan. So I seem to focus on soft autumn or soft summer with some winter and spring thrown in on occasion. The makeup artist said she was familiar with seasonal color analysis, but didn't follow it because people can wear warm and cool colors and limiting someone that way was not necessary. I agree. :) I also agree that as long as the contrast level is right and you keep your best colors - regardless of season, next to your face, you can't go wrong. :)
Zyla’a system, and many others, doesn’t work because color analysis is based on your face reacts to a color. Your personal coloring can sometimes point in the right direction but not always as this video highlights.
i think you get lost because it is a system with details
spend time with yourself and you know what colors reflect you
Hi Dory. I've watched a lot of your videos... When I first found out about color analysis I instinctively thought I was soft autumn (my sister also thought the same). I was first typed online as a cool winter, but I refused to accept her typing and she then typed me as soft summer. I believed it and tried the colors, but I never felt good in them. My sister later suggested I looked yellow in blues and could be delicate and warm. But autumn colors made me look muted. We settled on true spring (due to being brunette I apparently couldn't be light spring), but the colors still feel bright on me, although they do make my skin look good. Peach is one of my best colors, and I love light greens, soft reds, plum colors, and i feel powerful in deep teal. You have inspired me to meet with John Kitchener, hopefully soon before he retires. But for now I would love to try your colors, as I could resonate with possibly being lively spring with some deep rich and they include some of my favorite colors I've worn in the past. Thank you!!
I am so glad you feel inspired to visit with John. :) I have several seasonal palettes now from the 12 seasons system and I can look at Johns colors through the lens of color analysis. Johns colors for me can be found in soft autumn, true autumn, dark autumn and the eye colors and browns in soft summer! So when he says warm and cool are not the measure of your personal colors he is right!! :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video. Reading the comments, this obviously resonates with many of us who found the DYT system less than it claims to be, but were blamed/shamed for suggesting that the Emperor, while possibly not naked, wasn't wearing the most perfect, infallible clothes.
I had ordered Zylas book before seeing your eye video.
With DYT, I think the premise is not if the color actually works but that your energy type will carry it off, that it will “seem” to work because your energy will be congruent with the color. I think. Maybe adding that maybe the snake the key is to use there thoughts about the structure, fabrics, etc. for type one but use it with the colors that work for you? I’m not taking sides. I’m just wondering if that might be a way to blend the energy aspect which can also be Inc via clothing, lines, clothing, materials, etc. with your actual colors.
im in love with this look on you. It fits your personality perfectly just from first impression :)
I know this video is old but to me you look like you have olive undertones. Merriam Styles video on light olive was a game changer for me! She has a warm and cool version of these videos. I have blue / grey eyes too which threw me but I’m pretty sure after watching the videos that I’m a warm & delicate with olive undertones.
A lot of tan summers have your blended coloring. It’s funny because I thought this rich color looked so heavy on you. I’m glad that you used your intuition on your color journey!
Is it possible you are muted warm but so close to neutral that the lighter colors of muted cool work but not the darker ones?
Your color palette couldn't be more beautiful on you. It really looks like perfection. I think with the softer colors it's harder to just look at the color and see it for its beauty, but when you put the colors next to you, they are so beautiful! Very elegant and calming.
Thank you for this! I just signed up for DYT, and am attracted to having a clear schema that takes shape, pattern, and temperament into account. At the same time, I'm wary of wholesale "this will change your whole life, solve all the problems," messaging. I'm also not picking up on the typing process, and it seems a flim-flamy to me---though of course the makeover are impressive. I'd like to understand the philosophical underpinnings of the system better. As Americans in these times, one of our greatest style impediments is that we have such a panoply of choices and such unstructured social expectations so that our dressing becomes haphazard. It follows that ANY system which restricts color palette and stylistic choices will offer a more coherent, more harmonious wardrobe: elegance through limitation. Of course that can become oppressive, and different people will chafe to differing degrees It's funny--based on your lovely, earnest demeanor in this video (and your follow-up video, I'd never have typed you as a 1, but thought 2-4 or 4-2. Of course, you look lovely in your type 2 style on this video! Thank you again for this honest look at DYT. It's very useful to us who are discerning to what degree we want to adopt the DYT system.
