Nice to "meet you" sir. I applaud your method. (Have a degree in color theory with a hysterical prof who said, "In here it is NOT teal. It's blue-green. It's not mustard. It's broken shaded yellow." I don't care what you name your colors for the palette. It's clear to me that you "get it right" and that's what matters.)

Hi Dory. I think I came across you on a group for another colour system and you spoke sense then too! I have had so much trouble fitting into one particular season or type that I gave up. But now I’ve found John Kitchener system and I’m very interested again. Thank you for explaining it here. That green really suits you.

Back in 1984, in my early 30s, I was so pleased to learn of the Colour Me Beautiful system, having experienced the frustration of having a wardrobe with colours that often did not ‘go’ with me or with each other. My colour analyst, bless her, worked with the 'English rose’-complexioned, hazel-brown-eyed, darkish-brown-haired person in front of her (black and white a no-no, ditto the test-colours for Spring and Autumn) and decided that the best shot was Summer…in her admission, with rather unusual colouring for a Summer. She went through the palette and marked some colours as excellent for me, others as good, others to mix or wear away from the face, or as an accent.
At first I was disappointed with what appeared to me an insipid palette; mentally I saw myself as a brown-eyed Snow White who would suit cool, bold, saturated hues, but I could not deny that I looked terrible in white and black; and, as I saw that many of the Summer colours really did suit me and did not make me look insipid, I began to warm toward the Summer palette that offered some lovely hues I had not previously thought of (mostly deep tints or slightly toned/shaded colours, along with blued greys). As I turfed out from my wardrobe a top in bold red, another in royal blue and another in dark chocolate brown, I pondered to myself that I thought those colours also really had suited me; but having had too many horrible colour experiences, I preferred to leave the matter now to the more savvy.
Having a limited palette also made for a certain amount of welcome ease: what not to bother looking at; colours that went well with soft-silver hardware; no plethora of coordinating coats and accessories (bags, belts, shoes, etc) required to make tops and bottoms look good.
Then out came the 12-Season version and I was off to my CMB analyst again. Out I came a Cool Summer (in her admission, still a rather unusually coloured one, missing the ‘usual’ blue or cool eyes). Back into play came true red, hot pinks, vivid blues, a range of greens (she added some extra greens from the Winter palette that she said also suited me), and more. (“Yay! Drat, I wish I’d kept the bold red top and the royal blue one.”) Still no dark chocolate brown…
Time ticks by and I reread my CMB books. Lo! A recommendation about fur-colours I had bypassed…it said to use your own hair colour. Why just for fur-colour? Having by this time become something of a colour enthusiast, I had or acquired palettes of other Seasons and checked out Autumn, whence came dark chocolate brown, a perfect match for my hair. My hair-colour had never clashed with my skin and my 'Cool Summer' clothes (except maybe the true greys would give me pause).
…To cut a long story short, I eventually branched out looking beyond Cool Summer palette-limits to find what works for me, checking out other pure, saturated hues; tints from deep to light; tones of various degrees of chroma and lightness or depth; shades from deep to light. (I also looked into DYT, and found much that was very useful about ‘energy movement’ and related elements of style, including colour, but disagreed with the preset limits there and bought clothes and jewellery from them across all Types.) I have essentially cool skin, deep ‘warm’ hair (I do not have much grey but keep it its original colour), and warm eyes of which the rusty inner ring does not suit my complexion though the loden/olivey-green slightly present is OK.
I have now expanded the extent of my wardrobe so that it looks like it clothes 3 or 4 people rather than one (talk about time and expense!) And along with bursting into previously unexplored territory came the requirement for a variety of metal hardware, accessories and coats to go with the tops and bottoms… I was so engrossed I did not see that one coming!

Dory, thank you for presenting the different color palettes to us... I've never been good with colors. You must be an artist or something because your understanding goes way beyond anything I've ever been taught. I am still a Lifestyle member of Carol Tuttle's but only because of her energy profiling videos. Knowing my type and my family's type has improved our relationships dramatically, and for this I am very grateful. But I still dress the way I want- I am a type 1/2 and I wear silver any time I feel like it. What I appreciate about your videos is that you are giving us helpful hints- not rigid rules. That's where Carol Tuttle loses me. She really crosses a line by telling me what I can and cannot wear. That's going too far in my book. And it's such a shame because the energy profiling system is really amazing and helpful in my family dynamics. I don't know mind if she wants to give helpful hints to us about dressing according to type- but that DYT community is on the verge of being militant about it. For example, if you don't dress according to the rules, you are shunned. How backwards is that?? Several of my comments on her website were deleted... When I asked why, the DYT team told me that I was acting like I knew more than Carol Tuttle because I was giving too much "advice" to the other ladies... I was too uppity! Lol... (it wasn't about clothes, it was about family stuff and communication, etc... I thought I was just being an encouragement to them) Anyway, thank you for giving us options. That is so refreshing! I value your suggestions and I appreciate your openness to more than one system. Many thanks to you- you are a great teacher. Elizabeth

    • @doryshelpfulhints5200
      @doryshelpfulhints5200  6 лет назад +6

Thank you Elizabeth!! I had the same problem with Carol's system. I think above all, people need to be happy with what they wear. More than any other system, you first need to be true to yourself. Also, all anyone can give you is their opinions on your best colors. Remember, your opinion is the one that counts the most!!
I am so glad you found value in my videos!! Helping women to avoid the confusion that seems to run rampant in the color community is my number one goal!! :)

Energy profiling had been a great help for me in all areas of my life. It makes social interaction so much easier for me. I am still trying to understand the colors and the style in connection with our energies. I agree that as we are a blend of our unique energy type, complexion, physical features, culture and personal preferences, all of this must be part of our process of creating our fashion style. I am very passionate about this and I like to recognize to others when they are wearing the right colors and style. We are the only ones of God’s creation to have the need of clothes due to the original sin, but as always, when we tune back to our truth, to get dressed becomes a blessing that will become an opportunity to shine through our God given gifts and talents.

I know this is an old video. I found you because I am a DYT T3, questioning things. I have been following DYT for 10 years. I do love the colors I wear but there is a constant unease I feel between the DYT colors and my eyes and hair. My eyes like yours are blue/green/gray depending on light, my clothing, etc. My hair is an ashy taupe brown. DYT's advice is to color my hair to match my type. Honestly I hate dealing with the grow out where the roots are in sharp contrast to my natural hair color. Anyway, I'm just feeling an unease. Found your video and everything you said makes a lot of sense to me. I'm not going to jump in and change everything but you have definitely given me things to think about. Thank you.

I agree that we have to take everyone's individual coloring into account. I was watching another color expert talking about how when you wear the colors that look best on you the energy of the colors aligns best with your own energy. This is a lot like what Carol was saying but this expert was talking about wearing colors the match your own coloring not colors that match your personality. I've been typed as a 1 by Carol but type 1 colors don't match my coloring at all. Their brightness overpowers me, they make my look yellow, and they highlight my imperfections. I also free crabbier and ridiculous in them. I agree with the personality part of DYT but the colors have to go. I think once I'm working again I will plan a trip to Georgia and give John Kitchener a try :).

I am amazed every day at how well the colors John gave me work for me in everyway. In Kitchener, where your personality comes in with his system is in your essences. They help with styling the colors and reflect your unique blend of traits. I am so happy I found John and finally got the answers I was looking for!! :) If you see him, I think you will be really happy with the results. :)

This is awesome Dory, thank you for sharing!! Did you get your colors done by John in person or online? I'm a "Type 2" but I felt like I looked drained and tired in those colors after a while. After a year I sort of snapped and started buying type 4 colors in revolt of the grayed out tones 🤣 I was ranting to my friend the other day that it doesn't make any sense that I couldn't pull from my secondary for colors, if we can use the other elements from our secondary ... I just think I need more clarity and sheen, I don't look great in full-on dusty tones! We both agreed, just as you said, that humans are complex creatures, and we don't fit neatly into one of 4 boxes. If your secondary (or tertiary) can express in your bone structure why couldn't it express in your coloring?? That makes no logical sense! I'm so glad you found your beautiful colors that make you feel at home 💜 You look fantastic!

Thank you!! I had my colors done by John in Person in Georgia. He was great! I know a lot of people who have had virtual palettes done by him who were really happy with them! :)
Also, I completely agree that your coloring can be just as subtle as your features and finding the right set of colors is not always as simple as DYT would like it to be! Rochele Hirsch painted my palette and I recently found a foundation shade that is an exact match for my skin tone. I was amazed to see that when I put the foundation on a piece of white paper and matched it to my various palettes, the skin tone Rochele painted for me was an exact match! John doesn't do skin tones but when I told him what Rochele had told me about my skin tone at my consult, he agreed! Both of them are located in Georgia. If you get a chance, you should check them out. I have also been recently certified in the Color Breeze system. If you wanted, I could look at some photos and let you know what I think would work for you in the Color Breeze system.

I agree. All this stuff is so confusing. I'm still trying to figure myself out. Years ago I was told that I am a Spring by Colour Me Beautiful. I never knew if this was correct. I liked your leggings comment. I had the same reaction when I wear a light pink or beige top. I look nude on top. I always need to add a layer on top. Carrie Bradshaw likes this look and calls it her "naked dress". I was also confused by Dressing Your Truth. I am a 2 / 1. However, Type 2 colours can be quite boring and don't always feel like me,

I think the colors of DYT isn't meant to necessarily compliment a person by color complimenting, but to match your "energy" type. So you can wear the other colors but you will in theory not articulate your energy. It is a problem I have as well as I type as a 4. Yet I know other colors work with my coloring. What I was told is that be but I will be suppressing my energy and I create conflict between an energy people perceive that is contradicted by the colors I wear and seem inauthentic or hard to accept. So I feel very lost.

Alex Fjallstrom I agree with type 3! Carol is very good at storming on, typing someone abruptly and then refusing to engage or be questioned I’ve found. She told me I’m a 3/1 (the highest movement on the scale) which is so far from my truth it’s silly ~ I’m über sensitive with a more edgy backup and some lightness with a smidge of structure now and then, basically 2/3/1/4. I left her groups along with many other disillusioned women when the vibe felt too controlling and cookie cutter. Besides I don’t feel like many of the women in the makeovers look like they’re true to themselves! I got way more compliments when I dressed the way I know works for me. So I’m back to my peaceful self now. I’m interesting in John Kitchener though!

Hi Dory- Miss videos from you! As a former professional color analyst, artist, and makeup artist I just get crazy listening to the DYT color doctrine. Those tints wash out so many Springs/Lively Brights. Colors actually need to have pale clear gold, not white added to them to work for Springs. There is a delightful You Tuber from Europe who is a T1, clearly very animated, and a true spring, but all that white washes her out and it drives me nuts to see her ignoring her best colors to follow the dyt line. I think John has the best color eye out there! I am 75/25 rich/lively bright and it works perfectly. Also the DYT T3 palette has pinks/fuchsias that look wrong on rich earthy women. I think DYT is helpful in terms of energy expression and personal consciousnees and certainly in relating to my precious grandchildren, but the color part of it just does not always apply. My husband clearly has T3 features but his best colors are from the T2 palette plus black. He has a secondary 2 but there is no doubting his T3ness if one sticks to Carol’s system and goes by features. Crazymaking!! Thot you would understand😘

I would also like to add that in the dyt system there are rigid style components that may not work with the complexity of one’s type. I am t3 but abhor the t3 style of dressing espoused by ct with a bracelet, necklace, belt, and earrings always worn. I prefer a more elegant style aesthetic, not one that looks like it would be at home in a c/w bar. A denim jacket? Not a t3 color in my world, and again not my aesthetic-way too ordinary. Etro, yes. Rick Owens, yes if one can find pieces in one’s colors. I also noticed in dyt that t1’s seemed to feel ditzy was their new go to personality setting. Whew, tiring to watch. Humans are way more complex than four types, as you say. I loved John’s assesment of my type as 20 per cent romantic, 20 natural, 40 dramatic, 15 angelic, 5 classic. You can see why I would not enjoy dressing like ct!

The green top you have on, to me it looks greyed rather than blackened. If Carol says just a drop of black/white/grey -- but there's a scale from white over grey to black. When almost white, and almost black, you cannot tell where the white stops and the greying begins, or where the grey stops, and black begins.

    • @doryshelpfulhints5200

I agree that in the video the top looks grayed, but in person it has just a touch of shading to it. It also has, a lot of yellow, so it does not resonate with the DYT type 2 card. :)

For example, gray is not a color Type 4s should wear, but cool grays, contrary to what she says, not only *do* work with black, they look good on me as a Winter in the Color Me Beautiful system.
Of all the systems I've researched, IMHO John KItchener's appears to be the most accurate. I would love to be analyzed by him.
