  • How to find the proper resistance your tachometer desires using a potentiometer to select the correct resistor... We actually ended up doing troubleshooting and found an issue...and how to verify the PCM is sending a tach signal.

Had a jeep commander just like that but it was gold and had a hemi....with the awd that thing got the worse gas mileage than my cts-v that has a supercharger. ....but damn it was a nice riding and unsuspecting jeep....very plush and luxurious......the jeep would get 165/180 mi per tank , the cts-v 200/210 if your lucky

got a C50 diesel tach to install in my C10/6L LS my after market tach work fine setting at 4 cylinder....what do you recommand fot ressitor ( or potentiometer) to match the diesel tach (feed by the alternator originaly) and the tach signal output from the LS PCM? thx and nice work on your video

My #10 tach wire give off 12v with key off engine off...I tried the resistor trick with no luck, does it matter what end of the resistor gets the switched power.......1k ohm 1/4 watt resistors.....do you think 10k ohm will work...I'm using a summit digital 3"3/8 tach

If the signal wire from the tach is showing 12vdc with ignition and engine off the tach may be bad. there shouldn't be power on the signal wire with ignition and engine off. Verify you have the tach wired correctly. If this proves to be true, your tach may be faulty.
Lastly, do not skip straight to a 10k resistor. you will likely jump over what you need. remember the resistor simply slows electron flow. In this tech tip video we use it as a pull up resistor to make a very simple amplifier for the tach signal. Also, the resistors are not polarized like a diode. the direction of flow doesn't matter.

Hey can you use a 0.5w resister?

0.5 watt resistor is to small to handle the potential load sent as a tach signal. The resistor will likely burn up if not immediately then soon after. I would recommend at least a 5 watt Resistor that has the correct resistance for your tach ( the tach functions in a way that Is smooth fluctuations coordinating with engine rpm.)
