Bernie Taupin wrote Elton's lyrics and Elton came up with the melodies. That was a great partnership. Bernie Taupin is getting into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame this year, well deserved.

Bernie Taupins girlfriend. Highway references are rididng on tour bus. You would have had to seen the picture of her in the album gatefold to appreciate the pirate smile. She did mending for the band.

Early Elton John is the best Elton, IMHO. The use of strings and the orchestral arrangements were brilliant I’m his earlier work. Chod, albums 2 through 8 are as good as any music produced by anyone, ever.

There is a rare video with Bernie, Maxine and Elton from 1971 when they talk about their writing process and Elton grabs the paper that Bernie wrote the Lyrics on and then starts playing on the piano with the rough melody of the song he came up with. Fascinating. ruclips.net/video/fswdJilCBKM/видео.html

Bernie Taupin did an interview with Rolling Stone in 1973, and said the song was about his first wife, Maxine Feibelman. She also said it was about her, because she had done sewing work on Elton John's clothes and was interested in ballet when she was younger.

Elton came to LA in the late 60s, just in time for country rock era of the Troubadour night club. Everyone hung out there and influenced each other from, older folk singers, to very young singer./song writers like Elton.

I am shocked that you have not looked at or have more knowledge about this icon. This song is one of the most famous and played on the Fm radio stations tv and in movies. Bernie Taupin the master lyricist for Elton for many years especially his best works during the first 6 or 7!albums. This song is off of The Madman Across The Water album which is considered one of the best albums in rock/pop history with Levon, the title tune, and Indian Sunset. Those early albums had the great Paul Buckmaster conducting the full orchestra while Gus Dudgeon produced these first incredible albums. That is what elevated Elton to a level that had not been done in rock/ pop music before!

Due to its length at 6:21, it was not released as single but shorter versions were played on AM radio (#41?, some AM stations played the album version occasionally). Where it was played was on early FM stations where the album version of songs were played versus single release versions which did not always feature the artists intent. Some fans favor a lot of his earlier work. :)

I grew up with the music of Elton John & had a lot of his records. He was huge in the 70's-80's. He collaborated with Bernie Taupin since 1967 on more than 30 albums. They were one of the best song writing teams. Bernie wrote the lyrics & Elton supplied the melody. They had so many great hits together such as "Levon", "Honky Cat", "Crocodile Rock", "Bennie & The Jets", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", "The Bitch Is Back", "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" etc.

It should be against the law to use classic tunes for stupid commercials or stupid video games. These songs are our memories growing up partying , loving losing living.
