Since I can't see anyone else has mentioned him: Steve Howe, one of the most underrated guitarists ever. He composed guitar parts which are perfect for the song and yet he flits over the fretboard as though it isn't 2 feet long.

    • @jamesdignanmusic2765
      @jamesdignanmusic2765 3 года назад +7

That transition section where it cuts just back to his strumming sounds so simple, but very few guitarists could carry the whole weight of the song like that and make it work. Brilliant.

I don't know how a guy voted "World's Greatest Guitarist" five years in a row and thereafter disqualified from standing for election again can be described as "underrated". Among guitarist, he is rated at the same level as Jimi Hendrix. I'd buy "forgotten", but I you can't sell me on "underrated".

@@kennethkalls4031 He's underrated _now._ Look on the internet and you'll find people raving about Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi. Endless cover versions of other guitarists' work.

@@BenjWarrant If there is anything worth a bit of a discussion in the music world, it is Steve Howe. I suppose our competing opinions could be reconciled by agreeing that guitarists still worship him, but the common music fan no longer even recognizes his name if he or she is less than 50 years old. It is strange that a man who is still performing and touring with Yes can be labelled as "forgotten", but, then again, Yes has been forgotten, too. Young reactors all over YT keep saying they've never heard of the band, and I've had many debates with middle-aged commenters who insist that Yes in the '70's was only some obscure band that few people knew about,
The typical "guitar god" plays a bunch of standard blues licks at light speed. I think Howe could easily do that, but he has consistently gone out of his way to play his multiple guitars to produce runs and licks nobody has ever played before. I can't think of a single Yes song in which Howe played some typical runs or chords.
His versatility is astounding, and maybe that's a blessing for us, but a curse for him, because fans seems to gravitate towards a particular style when having GOAT discussions about guitarists. Some always opt for the shredders. Other opt for the emotive style of Hackett, Rothery, or Gilmore. Howe can and does play everyfuckingthing brilliantly, but other than noting he's brilliant, how can you describe his style?
It also hurts Howe quite a bit, IMHO, that during the band's most popular period in the '80's, it was Trevor Rabin on lead guitar.

I do remember during a performance in 2000 Jon forgot part of the lyrics of a more recent composition but they & the audience were all quite amused & it was really sweet how they can goof slightly. Yes was a serious inspiration to my playing. I was a middle of the road rock guy, and then someone turned me onto YES. Chris Squire blew me away. He's such a musical bass player, so creative. I hit the woodshed and sat in my room for hours trying to learn his parts as close as I could. When I was younger, I could play quite a few of their songs, maybe not note for note, but pretty damn close. I got to see them in Atlanta on the Going For The One tour at the Omni. Me and a friend stalked them at the hotel and got autographs. Those were fun times. I later drifted off into Jazz Rock Fusion stuff, but YES still has a large room in my heart reserved for them. It's like Geddy Lee said, without YES, there would be no RUSH.

Every song they do in the studio they can replicate live. Since ‘70. I’ve seen all but one tour, met them a lot. Such super guys. Jon knows he makes me nervous so he followed me around a record store once in the ‘90s. I was a dj for goodness sake, but couldn’t speak in his presence. I told him “ you’re my biggest fan”. He said “Yes Nancy I am”. I wanted to crawl under the counter I was so embarrassed. That’s when he started following me. LOL. I LOVE YES - for 45 years. And will forever. Chris’ playing can’t be touched, but I’ve become pals with Billy Sherwood, who Chris asked to take his place when he knew he was dying. I am, and have been very fortunate in my life. Thanks to Yes and their positive impact.

Kevin, I would agree with that assessment. I was in Amsterdam during this 2 night gig, and I also saw the show in Chicago and Milwaukee Wisconsin. When I saw them in Chicago and Milwaukee during 2001 orchestra tour, it was much wilder and louder. When I saw the Amsterdam 2001 show, at the Heineken Music Hall, the largest indoor concert hall I have ever been in, had excellent acoustics but they played it so carefully with the European festival orchestra, and the sound was not as loud as it was here in America, sitting in the audience. Yes is my favorite band and always has been since the early 1970s when I was growing up. I have about 37 million live soundboard albums of their music and I have always felt that when bands play and know they are being recorded for an album or video or both, they tend to play a little bit too carefully. I think some of their best work was done when they were not being recorded, Radio shows being the exception. There are far more energetic versions of Starship Trooper out there. The whole concert in Amsterdam was a little bit quiet compared to the American tour.

I agree no one compares to 70's YES and it's frustrating when people try to do so. There was NO ONE ELSE who took you to as many beautifully unexpected amazingly unpredictable & deeply emotionally uplifting places. They are the full box of delicious mixed desserts. I've seen them 10 times and that's not all that much compared to some of the fans. A Yesfan is almost always someone you're going to like and get along with. It's a state of mind.

If you want to see an awesome YES live performance you need to see something with Rick Wakeman on keyboards, he wasn't the player in this concert. Rick is considered by many to be the greatest rock keyboardist ever and he spent a good portion of his career with YES. Pretty much any of their live performances from Montreux 2003 are excellent.....Heart of the Sunrise is particularly good. IMO the whole performance has a lot more energy than this one does. I just wanted to comment about your excellent review regarding why the audience was not standing up in the middle of the song. The Dutch almost never do. The Dutch are a wonderful people and are extremely polite. Maybe too polite sometimes in concert halls. They rarely stand up until the until the song is over. Not always true for the smaller venues. It is just their way of showing respect. Here in America, we very often do stand up immediately when things get so wonderful. It is just a slight culture difference Wilburn. Takes awesome band to be better live than recorded almost every time. Live is one shot! Studio you can overwork and overkill easily. This was just right and Chon as usual, little speechless after Yes. Don' t blame him, I am too. Natural reaction to excellence and greatness! Love CS in this one. Miss him a lot.

And this is when they are old guys and without Rick Wakeman. Watch some live stuff from their 1973 Yessongs shows when they were young and in their prime, plus with Bill Bruford on drums (no offense to Alan White, but Bill is in his own class). Seeing Yessongs as a midnight movie in college was always an awesome event, and of course seeing them live was out of this world!
    Peace from SF

When you started this journey, you thought you could have ten personal best bands. I smiled. Now you have listened to enough to know how saturated we all were back in the day with superlative music...and music for every taste. These bands were not to everyone’s taste, but there was something for everyone and in every genre there were masters of the form. Yes was one of the masters of prog rock. Not my fav genre, but MAN I can appreciate their mastery, their skill, their creativity, their musicianship.
The musical bench is so deep, Chod, you have years of fun awaiting you. We lived through it and so had the advantage of absorbing it as it came out....it didn’t all come to us at once like you’re getting it.

its interesting seeing the sedate crowd and remembering seeing YES at the Cow Palace in the 70's-the crowd hardly sedate but yes, these are probably the same folks that were there and I'd likely be sedate now enjoying them in concert. I see many people commenting on Chris Squire and yes, he was mesmerizing in concert-his energy, his groove-he really drove the band. They rocked hard in concert playing the same songs from the albums but far more rocking and intense. They played "Im Down" by the Beatles -rocked it hard.

One of the many great aspects of Yes is that they were never satisfied to repeat their album performances live and always bring something new to the songs. This is not a particular favorite version of Starship Trooper, but it still provides different insight from other versions.

I liked your reaction to this Yes classic (and there are many more from the early 70's). For Starship Tooper you selected to do a first reaction on a live version, congratulations on that. They are the best versions so you choose well. Others have picked the studio version on The Yes Album still a great song but I think it's a developmental version. The really best live version of this song is on the Yessongs triple LP, it is the last song or at 1: 59:18 on the digital version (yes that is 1 hr 58 mins 18 secs into Yessongs). That was the classic Yes line-up including Rick Wakeman. Do yourself a favor and check it out. Some of the live versions on Yessong are amazing how they produced that Yes soundscape live including Close to the Edge is a wonder. Thank you for your reaction and for venturing into the early to mid 70's era of music. Keep going you will find amazing talent there; Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Deep Purple to name some.

Worth it just to watch Chris Squire ham it up! Bands often speed up the tempo of songs when performing them live, but here they slow it down a bit, perhaps because they were slowing down themselves or because they were dragging along an orchestra behind them. Whatever the case, I liked it. The slightly slower pace gives some of the passages a bit of a Grateful Dead feel. I like that too!

My face hurts from smiling watching this again- Jon Anderson’s voice is like an angel- and when he harmonized with Chris Squire it was on another level- and speaking of Squire, RIP- he and Alan White could lay down the driving force behind all their music but Squire could also play that bass like a lead- adding to Steve Howe’s acoustic and electric guitar work- this was a great show but I still say you should check out this song from the Jazz Fest Lugano Switzerland 2004- the original keyboardist Rick Wakeman was there. And if you like live shows with an orchestra, check out Moody Blues- they also could rock your ass off but with class.... thanks my friend....
