Yes! Chris Squire's bass line in this song is timeless pure virtuosity. Rock In Peace Mr. Squire.
Amen
Always loved his work in the song The Fish... what tone!
Yes. Especially with 90125. that was my fave YES album
He's the best
Chris, Niel Peart, and missing Ray Thomas as well...
Chris Squires bass playing is so brilliant!
Chris Squire virtuoso innovator supreme!!!!
and sang harmony while he played it live.
Lets not forget the great Rick Wakeman on keyboards, and composer of this production. Also, don’t forget the great Jon Anderson on lead vocals. I saw them twice during the seventies, amazing.
Now image listening to this as a 13 year old in 1971 for this first time. Between Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Pink Floyd back then started my adventure into Progressive Rock. Being a teen in the seventies was a great time.
This amazing group was massively ahead of its time! Can you believe this piece is over 50 years old!
Oh man that makes me feel old!
truly awesome. That's way I arranged it for solo piano! ruclips.net/video/P6iM9oz1G2g/видео.html
"I've Seen All Good People", "And You & I", "Yours is No Disgrace", "Sound Chaser", "Starship Trooper", "Heart of the Sunrise", "Close to the Edge"
Perfect
You forgot "Leave it"
You left out...South Side of the Sky, Long Distance Runaround, Going For The One, Awaken, and lots of other songs.
@@steverey8362 "Leave It" is off of 90125. The same album Owner is on, which he didn't like. I think he needs to delve into the classic era before revisiting their pop hits otherwise it might sour him on the band. Someone made the mistake of suggesting Owner as his introduction to Yes. Big mistake. He wasn't feeling it. Classic era is the way to go.
“Then” !!!!
The bass line in song is so good even Getty Lee from Rush said it is perfection
ROUNDABOUT for solo piano ruclips.net/video/P6iM9oz1G2g/видео.html
I have listened to this song for almost 50 years and I still get as excited as you are right now about it
With you on that... Still have my original vinyl.
ROUNDABOUT for solo piano ruclips.net/video/P6iM9oz1G2g/видео.html
I'm glad you gave this band another chance. This is the classic lineup of Yes:
Jon Anderson (vocals)
Steve Howe (guitar)
Chris Squire (bass) r.i.p.
Rick Wakeman (keyboards)
Bill Bruford (drums)
All 5 are considered among the top of their instruments. Quite literally a different band from the Owner Of A Lonely Heart lineup, with only Anderson and Squire from this lineup on that song (different guitarist, keyboardist and drummer). As a musician yourself, I knew you would appreciate this band as all are stellar musicians. Thank you for coming back.
I wholeheartedly agree with that. What an INCREDIBLE lineup!
You obviously have an ear for 70's era Yes! Check out
"Yours is no Disgrace", "Heart of the Sunrise", "I've seen all Good People / Your Move", "Siberian Khatru" and "South Side of the Sky" just for starters!
Yeeeesssss - I love South Side of the Sky, sadly often disregarded by many 'fans'.
All Good People, or Starship Trooper, or Yours Is No Disgrace .... Anyone of these for your next YES journey.
Cheers
Yep. Gotta go back to the Yes Album and work up to the really good stuff. Not ready for CTTE or GOD yet.
Early Yes is one of prog rocks best. When they went pop it just wasn't the same.
Hey, this is my first time listening to this band. I LOVE IT!! Question though since what Album did they became pop? I want to listen to their materials from before that. Thanks.
@@glorianiaga2111 Their pop album was 90125 in '83, just about anything before that is good. Close To The Edge is considered by many Yes fans as their best album. It has only 3 songs on it, the title track taking up all of side 1, and 2 songs taking up side 2. Fragile is another album to check out, a lot of great songs on that.
Thank you so much guys. I prefer listen to an entire album so this helps a lot.
@@glorianiaga2111 Entire albums are the way to go. There's a reason (generally) why the artists put the songs in the order they did on the albums. I'd suggest that you start with "The Yes Album" from 1971 and work your way forward. You're in for a treat.
@@glorianiaga2111 Check out the entire Close to the Edge album.
As a kid, I got a full dose of Zep, Yes, Rush, and Deep Purple. Why? Master musicians. All are tops at their craft: Bruford (his drumming is amazing) Wakeman (amazing keyboards), Howe (amazing guitar), Squire (amazing bass). Put them in amazing compositions, you get, well, one damn amazing band.
I will always remember Rick Wakeman playing his Melletron live with a opening swell.....
The bass riffs in this one are truly epic!! Geddy Lee from Rush accompanied them on this song for Yes' induction into the RRHOF!
🤯🤯🤯glad you enjoyed this track. Yes yes yes. More yes.
I still go back and listen to that. I think Geddy was as thrilled to play with them as they were to have him. Geddy's expression was so joyful. RIP Chris Squire.
"Yes" is so chock full of great musicians and composers! Wakeman kills it on organ in that break near the end - outstanding!
Along with "Good Vibrations" and "Stairway to Heaven," one of the all-time greatest rock songs.
They were way ahead of their time along with many others in the 70's-80's.
Thats why these bands are very popular today.
I work with a load of bouncing late teen, early 20's and they ALL love 70's music.
As i am 66 and lived it all,i am teaching them.
They all say todays music "sucks"
That was always a good word when i was a young man but it means something is dogshit.
I cannot disagree but then,i was blessed being born when i was.
Good to see youngsters today digging out these timeless icons music and listening to utter quality and talent.
I can't agree more with u. I am going to be 60, in March and realize that the music we had back then...was unbelievably Great but also different musically!
I don't see that now at all! If we wanted to be honest most of us didn't appreciate the music at the time, I think because we assumed it would be there. 🤷♀️😪 Happy to see you're doing what u love ♥️👍
Was privileged to see Yes live once, brilliant! They performed on a round stage in the center of the stadium which slowly turned to be facing the entire audience and had every instrument known to man on that stage and used everyone of them. They sounded as good or mostly better than their studio recordings! Brilliant!☮️❤️
Thank you for giving YES another shot. Now Starship Trooper, I've Seen All Good People, Heart of The Sunrise.
When I was very young Yes was my favorite band and Bill Bruford was by far my favorite drummer! I was doubly blessed to have seen them twice, twenty years apart!
Think about this - this song will be 50 years old next year. I would suggest Heart of the Sunrise, And You and I or Siberian Khatru for your next Yes experience.
Doesn't make sense does it? The irony is it wasn't their best in terms of charting. Their only #1 hit was "Owner Of a Lonely Heart" (RELEASED IN 1983 AND GOT TO #1ON BILLBOARD 100 IN FEBRUARY 1984)
This song is the most famous progressive rock tune of all time. They have many more fantastic songs like And You And I, Starship Trooper, Perpetual Change, Siberian Khatru,, And Turn of the Century!
Glad you found the real YES. The other song you heard was YES by default, Lol..
They broke up at the end of the seventies because Atlantic was pressuring them to write nice short pop tunes, which never suited them. They created more consecutive sprawling epic progressive rock pieces than any other group. In 1983, Chris Squire and Alan White ( drum and bass) teamed up with Trevor Rabin and called themselves 'Cinema'. YES vocalist Jon Anderson heard the sessions and wanted to be a part if it. They found themselves with another old YES pal Tony Kaye on keys, so they said well, I guess this is YES. so they used the band name YES, and since Chris and Jon were the YES founders, they had the rights. So suddenly there was birthed a VERY skilled, heavy rock pop eighties band called YES that bore little resemblance to the original. So now if you dare, dig deeper into one of
The greatest prog rock bands of all time!.
Oh, by the way, the actual YES masterpiece would be a little 21 minute diddy called 'Close to the Edge' from the masterpiece album of the same name. Roundabout is YES getting warmed up. You have no idea how deep the rabbit hole goes...are you sure you want the
red pill?? Lol...
Very very True, but as beautiful as you can get! What a time to grow up and have some much music all around you!
"Close to the Edge"
We had so much great music in the seventies that we sorta took it for granted! We thought it was going to keep getting better! Wow we were wrong!
great music was killed by all the plastic people and disco
so true
There's still great music. The difference is that now you have to dig for it. The 70's seems better because the good stuff was able to break into the mainstream more readily. Now it's all on Bandcamp or Soundcloud with no record label promoting it.
@Steve Wilkins totally agree with you.
90% of the music? since2000 ,has
been abysmal! I now spend time
finding bands I missed in the
golden years of the seventies.
I'm missing that era. Nothing compares.
You need to "redeem" Supertramp with "The Logical Song" or "Goodbye Stranger (studio version)" :D
Fragile was one of those complete albums, and you can't imagine how innovative it sounded when it first came out.
I am very partial to “The YES Album”
2-5 haven’t got a Bomb on any of them.
I can. I bought it in 1971.
It still does
the 70's, that wonderful era of music. It was just amazing what came out of the 70's.
So much awesome music in the 70’s - It’s gotta be the golden age for R&R music, shear volume and diversity of “quality” music is amazing!
Yes puts together all these transitions seamlessly. And it flows so well. Really enjoyed hearing the song and your reaction.
Eddie Offord's production is amazing, on both Fragile and Close to the Edge, the crystalline sound, the driving bass.
A very special song . This band ripped many minds to confetti for a solid decade . Then they forgot their pristine focus . Still I cant deny how great there best stuff was .
The obvious choice would be "Close To The Edge" so you can see the level they are actually capable of and a new definition of "Masterpiece" if you like transitions then CTTE is your song.
Agreed
Yes, Close to the Edge is definitely near the top of the list. BTW, loved you in Three Musketeers.
I've seen them at least a dozen times and they always put on a great show! They are the most talented band ever in my opinion!
And that was from a scratchy vynal record album too, not even a remastered digital version, which is why we the listening audience missed out on a fair portion of the nuances of that song.
The next song should definitely be "Heart of the Sunrise". Go for it.
They were just as phenomenal live.
My first girlfriend got me to buy this -- one of my first albums. Over the years, I've come to appreciate the virtuosity more and more.
Owner of A Lonely Heart is another great tune.
This was early 1970s "Yes". In the 1980s the band lineup changed; a great song by that lineup is "Changes". The lead guitarist on "Roundabout" is Steve Howe, who left "Yes" and joined a new band "GTR" in the mid-1980s. You should check out "Imagining" and "When the Heart Rules the Mind" by "GTR".
Another band you’ll probably love is Traffic. Recommend The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys or Glad or Freedom Rider. Each is different from the other but all are great music. Steve Winwood is a musical genius, song writer, amazing vocalist, keyboards. Everything from blues to progressive rock to jazz. He and 3 others, Jim Capaldi-drums, Dave Mason-guitar, Chis Woods-anything else that needs playing, formed Traffic in the late 60s.
And I’ll add my rec for another Yes song to All Good People or Starship Trooper.
Man alive! That crackle took me back to my vinyl days. It took a lot of effort to keep albums in good condition.
That smile on your face was all the reaction needed.
Yes-Yours is No Disgrace; Starship Trooper; South Side of the Sky; CLOSE TO THE EDGE; And You and I; Going for the One; Awaken; Gates of Delirium.
Oh, to be able to hear Roundabout for the first time again. You got us as close to that as possible. And I love how excited it made you! 😃😃😃
I was there when they when they played this song live, all those years ago..
What great years they were with wonderful bands like Yes and a 1,000 more..
It’s really tough to pick a favorite instrument in this one; they all blend, step up, step back and then meld again, over and over. Mind blown, and I never get tired of hearing it.
Great reaction. Next: Close To The Edge. This, the title piece from their fifth album after Fragile, is absolutely amazing. It is a long piece (18:43), actually more of a 4 movement suite rather than 4 separate songs. It took up all of side 1 of the vinyl album when it was released in 1972. The music is all over the place and the lyrics are best approached as Dadaist poetry, but hey, that's prog rock.
p.s. And you earned a new subscriber.
Great reaction. Next Yes listen I'd recommend is: "Heart of the Sunrise". There are several classics on same level as Roundabout but I'd do "HOTS" next.
I saw YES in the round, the stage slowly turned. I'll never forget that concert!! Thank u for the memories!👍♥️
I also loved it in Detroit.
Those were the days 👍😁
In and around the lake
The mountains come out of the sky
and they stand there
"Heart of the Sunrise" will envelop your entire being.
Never seen such a huge smile from you before, Chod--- welcome to the ranks of Yes fans!
One of YES' several masterpieces! Saw this played dozens and dozens and dozens of times in concert. Greatest band on this planet! R.I.P. Chris my friend.🌹🌹🌹
There are so many great songs by one of the greatest prog rock bands ever. I would recommend any from the following albums: Close To The Edge, Awaken. But particularly The Gates Of Delirium from their Relayer album.
Did you notice this record was well played before they put it on youtube. So you know it was really played & the record was well seasoned cause you could hear the cracking on the record & it wasn't dusty. But any way it great to see a reactor listing to this classic song & receive a eargasym + enjoyed the emotional roller coaster ride that this classic song give. Welcome to the club of all of us that herd it & grew up to this song. The true music lovers that ever herd this song with a friend gave the expressions you did & got tung tide trying to talk about what they herd. And YES i also like Owner of a lonely hearts by YES with the same reaction when i 1st herd it.
I listened to this song over and over as a teen. I'm glad you're as impressed as me and everyone else from that era. It's a timeless classic. Facts!
Saw Yes back in early 80's. 3rd row. Great concert. Stevie Ray, Chicago, Rush, Allman Brothers, also others wide variety. .BB KING ETTA JAMES , Deep Purple etc. You are the only reactor I wait for each day. 52 TERMINAL CANCER. I AM GOING TO MAKE A LIST OF the music you seem to enjoy. By the way concert tickets 9 dollars -12.50
Thanks for helping me get through the days. PEACE
Starship Trooper is a great YES song.
There's a lot more they have of this quality. Have fun exploring the depths of Yes. The best prog rock band ever.
In my high school years I'd put the cassette on and lay down to bed. Then wondering what was this Roundabout. These days I like to think it's going for a musical drive. The Roundabout takes it back into the Composition like a Roundabout gets you turned around. Really brilliant!
Another bit of greatness from yes, first heard them in 1972 age ten, them and Peter Gabriel’s Genesis the same year. What a fabulous childhood of music, love prog. Your reactions are total class my friend.
The band went down from Glasgow to Edinburgh, 2 hour drive.
Jon Anderson the singer noticed all the roundabouts in the 2 hour drive. (fact there is 22)
So he started to humming the song and Steve Howe who was never quiet wondered what was going on.
Together they made this song in 2 hours, of course it was processed in the studio, but the song was there!
I was able to Experience these Master Musicians Live in Colorado USA in the mid 90s. Phenominal Show, and Consumate Professionals. 🌟🌟🌟
Chris's bass and Bill's rrumming propel this track and with the band all on form too its a timeless track of outstanding musicianship - and yet many journo's abandoned prog when punk came out - class will always shine through.
Thank you for giving them a second listen! 🎶 Been in this rabbit hole since the 70's.....welcome in!
I have been listening to this timeless classic for 49 years!
Close To The Edge, Gates of Delirium, on and on. This was way before the Yes you listened to before. I think I have probably seen them at least a dozen times.
I am soooooo sorry I or we didn't give you this song in the beginning....Yes' Roundabout was a huge hit in the US and album Fragile was No.1 in1969 to 1970.....my reaction was like yours when I first heard this song on the radio in1969...growing up with Musicians...it was pure perfection to me.....then I found out I wasn't alone....many others including a worldwide music critics were all ranting and raving about the album "Fragile." I bought the album and have been a fan ever since. They were along with Rush the pioneers of Classical Rock which is called Progressive Rock today....They are among the gods of Rock n' Roll.....so.....I am glad you answer my request. I want to request another song by Yes. It is from their first album "Yes Album"..."I've Seen All Good People." and "South Side of The Sky." I hope you will like it!!!
This song will always remind me of Lasarium. It was a laser show set to rock music at the Seattle Center back in the late 70’s. We would get all stoned out. They would turn off the lights and everyone would lay on their backs on the carpet floor and watch the laser show on the ceiling
close to the edge and gates of delirium.... not easy to listen to, 20 min songs but if you get it, it will change your life. Usually takes building up to but give it a shot. Also watch some of their live concerts and you can see how it is just them playing every note every time perfect!!!
Remarkable album. BLew my my mind when I first heard it around 1972 or so. There was so much good music around we were spoiled. Could listen to great unending music all night without a break.
At the top of my All-Time! Glad you agree!
I love the vinyl popping in the background
At a certain moment the smile on your face was simply Priceless.
I'm a 60 year old ProgRock musician. This moment brought me a moment of Joy.
Thanks for the reaction.
Should have gone with the remastered version.
I agree - this sounded like my old vinyls after having played it 50 times - what the heck?!
@@tarkushead Gotta clean the dust off before setting down the stylus. 😊
Jackass didn't even ground his shitty turntable, calling it "HD" . . . AND it's playing slow. Song's at least 1/4 tone flat, smdh . . .
Vinyl has the purist sound. Analog sound waves are the real thing. I saw this live in 1974. An incredible show.
What a great prog band. I last saw them in 2003 during their 35th Anniversary tour. Rick Wakeman rejoined the band bringing his wizard like keyboards with him. What a great and memorable concert seen at the Concord Pavilion in Concord, CA. They were crisp and clean and still relevant.
YES sadly didn't have as many hits we would have liked from them, but the few
more popular exceptional Rock compositions they offered for our enjoyment,
are quite legendary musical masterpieces worthy to remember.........always. :-)
I saw and heard them live for the first time atMadison Square Garden. Best concert ever though I could not hear for two days!
"Heart of the Sunrise"
Mind... Blown! And justifiably so. GREAT reaction. I have never, ever, ever grown tired of this song.
My best friends Uncle was telling me he saw Black Sabbath open for YES in the early 70's in Detroit! Now that's a great show...
The smirk at 7:29, worth the price of admission.
they did a live acoustic blues shuffle version of it in 2004 for a DVD...shows their versatility....also, check the rehearsals for the gig narrated by Rick Wakemam .....great fun
My first big time rock concert. 50 years ago. Municipal Auditorium Nashville. Nosebleed section about as far from the stage as you could get. It was amazing! Yessongs is a concert made into a movie. Saw it a few years later. Their music ia still fresh.
Chris Squire’s bass just makes this song. I love it.
Chris Squire on bass.
He aint bad is he.
Try out "And You And I"
It was my introduction in 1973.
I never looked back.
Huge song when I was a kid discovering music for myself. Huge band Huge song, for years.
What they did in five albums over three and a half years turned musical possibilities, experience and expectations in the framework of rock music on it’s ear and set the bar extremely high.
Great work on the photo of the vinyl. Bought back some very old memories buying the LP and sitting around grooving to Yes - treasures they were
Man, I've been enjoying your reactions immensely lately, and am so glad you have gotten into YES.. Roundabout was the song all the dudes would get up enough courage to go ask a pretty lady to dance to at "The Marshmallow" back in the day (; just over the state line where it was legal to drink at 18, this was 1971 or 72, Great Memories for me Man, now that I am 67, but still Yes, thrive on that music.. Peace and Love Man and keep up your great reviews. OH Wait, a request for your Next Reaction, one you would Love.. >> Yours is No Disgrace, Live or not, doesn't matter. (:
I’m 68 and saw Yes twice in St. Petersburg,Fla. great concerts,Yes was awesome on stage!
Still rocking at 66. Love from Cape Town,South Africa.
Roundabout is the gateway drug to Yes.
One of the few bands I’ve seen live multiple times. One of the few bands that were just as good live if not better.
You need to check out CHANGES, I'VE SEEN ALL THE GOOD PEOPLE.. any other live music is good
when that bassline comes in.. so powerful.
The scratches and everything ❤️
Exactly!! I find the scratches and crackles and pops familiar, and endearing ~ 💜✌
This album is one of my favorites... inspired a lot of progressive bands later on. Pure greatness
YES is the band that changed my life. That's the reason I've been a musician for the last 40 years. Their music is an experience not an episode
Drums n bass in your FACE!!! Bruford and Squire are a well oiled machine! Yes is phenomenal!!!
"Starship Trooper", "And You and I", and "Lift Me Up" - Three more Yes bangers. As to the lots of sections and lots of transitions... Welcome to the wonderful world of prog rock. Tool have carried on the idea of prog, but from the classic prog era Yes were one of the four greats, along with Pink Floyd, King Crimson, And Emerson Lake and Palmer. There's lots of fine music to explore there!
