When real musicians get off work........they listen to Steely Dan.
It’s a high class musicians rabbit hole you’ve entered with this.
Any suggestion you get about Steely Dan songs will all be good.
I highly recommend your next Steely Dan reaction to scorch your socks off, listen to Reelin in the Years.
Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin said his favorite guitar solo of all time is from Reelin in the Years. He rated it 12 out of 10!
Steely Dan is also a band who’s music MUST MUST MUST always be heard from the studio recordings. They are recording masters. They hired different Gun slinger musicians to record their songs with.
Many of those hired guns never toured with them.
Elliott Randall is the guitar player on Reelin in the Years and recorded it all in 1 take. He turned them down to join the band as a permanent member because he used to be friends with Jimi Hendrix who confided in him how everybody want a piece of him with his success and Elliott did not want that for himself.
Enjoy!
This whole album is a masterpiece. Every. Song.
I'll say it again: listen to the whole Aja album. Some of the best smooth groove on the planet! :)
Steely Dan is one of the greatest bands ever. Musicianship, writing, production all A++. "Kid Charlemagne", "FM, "Babylon Sisters", "Peg", "Hey Nineteen", "Bodhisattva" "Aja", "Haitian Divorce", "Do It Again", "Show Biz Kids"....so many more. Hip Hop always a big sampler....
Ditto to everything you said.
One of "their" greatest bands ever? Whose greatest band? Becker and Fagen? What other bands did they have?
@@scurvybro8850 goodness.....a typo. I edited it for you. apologies....peace
@@scurvybro8850 - douchebag much?
@@unmalo2768 Nah. Just enough.
Steely Dan is at a whole other level. Try "Deacon Blues" and "Peg"
ALL of the songs on Aja are great. My favorite is whatever I happen to be listening to. Rick Beato has a entire video dedicate to the drum solo from the title song.
The song is smoother than silk. The whole album is legendary and filled with the greatest musicians on earth!👍🏻❤️☮️
You have only started the journey with Steely Dan. It only gets better.
Steely Dan is primarily two guys, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker ... along with the best of the session musicians available. And these other musicians varied from song to song, album to album. Among those, Michael McDonald, later of the Doobie Brothers fame, played/sang on one of their albums. Both Donald Fagen and Becker ... musical genius.
Speaking of drinking and driving...check out Deacon Blues. One of the best songs ever recorded by any artist and yet it might not even be in my top 5 favorite Steely Dan songs...that’s how good Steely Dan is.
Steely Dan is your favorite band’s favorite band.
Next recommended Steely Dan song: “FM (No Static at All)”
I like SD as much as the next person but the Beatles???
@@Skylarking00 John,Paul,George and Ringo must have met up often and chilled to the Dan lol.Wonder if Buddy Holly was into the Dan!
@@paul-Ess Heck I've heard that even Mozart and Vivaldi listened to Steely Dan!
@@troubleondemand7703 that's unbelievable
@@paul-Ess Some say that even the great John Philip Sousa drew inspiration from The Dan.
In my humble opinion, the 1970’s w/ Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin, represents the high water mark of modern music.
yes!
You better recognize!!!! Steely Dan are the king's of the groove! They didn't miss! Their catalog is deep! You gotta keep going because you`ve barely scratched the surface! They are perfection!
Wait'll you hear the rest of this album, and others by SD...Get your swim trunks on, 'cause you're about to do a deep dive!..These dudes were special.
Dude, as a drummer you need to listen to the title track (Aja) off this album with the great Steve Gadd on drums.. it will BLOW YOUR MIND.
Steely Dan is one of musics deepest rabbit hole, a rabbit hole that would amaze Alice. All SD songs should be reacted to with a lyric video. SD is smart, funny, ironic, adult and occasionally obscure and complex. Even how they got their name is clever. Every song is played at a high level. Try "Peg" next, then "Do It Again", "Kid Charlemagne", "Aja", "Deacon Blues", the entire "Aja" album, "Hey Nineteen", "The Fez", "Green Earrings", "Reelin' In The Years", "Babylon Sisters", "Dirty Work", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Don't Take Me Alive", "My Old School", "Any Major Dude Will Tell You", and "Doctor Wu". There are many more because there's really no bad SD song. Steely Dan, as says Tre Narcisse, Kings Of The Groove.
By the way, Rudy's Bar and Grill still exists here in NYC on 9th ave, between 44th and 45th. Then as now it is essentially a dive bar. At the writing of this song it was frequented by musicians, actors, artists, and pros, being so close to what then was 42nd street and pro central.
Steeley Dan is a whole other animal. Not rock. Jazzy funk fusion. These days, this is known as “adult album rock” or as “yacht rock”....a catch all phrase form smooooth and sophisticated music. Something for the playlist for a fancy party. This is a studio band....and some of the best studio musicians in LA played on their albums. Highest production values; highest level musicianship; smooth vibe. You have tons of great songs from these folks to enjoy. This is from their album AJA (pronounced Asia) which is one of their best. You might SERIOUSLY consider an album reaction to AJA....You will get tons of suggestions for songs. Pick one. They’re all great. Some people don’t like them because they’re not heavy rock. Some people have narrow tastes.
No..moron
That. Is. Not. Yacht. Rock.
Right. Steely Dan is an R&B/jazz fusion band. Never really were rock, although they played the stuff through Pretzel Logic on rock instruments.
The band GREAT bands listen to as their favorite band. There is NO MISS with Steely Dan. "FM (No Static At All" next or "Green Earrings"....then start with their first album and first hit "Do It Again". Move forward in their discography and you will be a fan forever.
Aja is one of the greatest albums ever produced in ANY genre.
I totally agree
I loved watching your face as you listened to the song---like a baby tasting ice cream for the first time.
I love Steely Dan. This is my favorite song by them. I love their smartass lyrics. Veiled in soothing music.
More steely dan. Please.
More Steely Dan please!!!! This band is amazing! Anything by them is great, their catalogue is really deep and I don't think they have ever made a bad or even mediocre song.
Can’t wait for more Steely Dan. You really can’t go wrong on any song. I have 3 artists always on my playlists Steely Dan, Led Zeppelin and Elvis Costello. I’ll be here for the ride.
I will hug whoever it was too lol. All their songs are individual masterpieces. Go down that rabbit hole, you won’t be disappointed!
Watching you groove made my day. Ya can't hide a true appreciation for the music, just gotta move. I'm with ya.
Aja was number three on the US charts 1977 the album is full is hits. Grammy Award for Best Engineered Recording. The title track Aja should be next. I enjoy your reactions keep learning about all the great music out there.
You have no idea what you are in for going down the Steely Dan rabbit hole. They are perfectionists and it shows in every song they do. The hits are endless and the best part is no two songs are the same. Each song is like going on a new adventure and you just have to sit back and enjoy the ride. Picking one song for you to react to is impossible. They are all great.
First of all, for everyone listening to Steely Dan for the first time on Aja, I suggest you start with “Can’t Buy a Thrill” and work your way up the years because it will show the maturation of their music. You will not be disappointed.
Great keys and percussion by Victor Feldman, a very talented man.
Simply amazing.......Welcome to Steely Dan!...Simply the best!
subbed because of this reaction..... can't wait to see your reactions to more Steely Dan.... anything...every one of their songs is FIRE
Ahhh dig seeing the joy the Dan brings to peoples faces
S-U-B-L-I-M-E !...What a wonderful head space. The greatness of this band cannot be overstated. Saw them in concert, the main act after Doobie Brothers. Fabulous live tight performance. I was in heaven.
This group of Musicians are in a genre all their own..SO talented!!
Great reaction from a man who knows his music. Thank you! Enjoy your trip through the Steely Dan catalog.
If you need more Steely Dan always do studio. Although they did play live at times and did it well, the magic of Steely Dan is in the studio perfectionism. I think they have 50 songs better than this to be honest.
I don’t know if they’re actually better but the entire writing, production, and musicianship is on another planet compared to anything since the early eighties. The only question is whether or not this is jazz rock or rock jazz. Sublime.
I'm not sure everyone agrees there are 50 songs that are better. How could one prove that?
@@richardmyers1506 I'm damn sure there isn't 50 songs better than Black Cow!!
"Sometimes their little ears can't handle it."
Best sentence ever spoken.
So this is 2 years old and I'm seeing it for the first time. I've seen many other of your reactions, including your 3 part reaction the The Making of Aja. How fun it was to see you hearing Aja/Steely Dan for the first time!! It's such a good feeling to know that now YOU know just how good they are. I've commented to several other reactors who like Steely Dan to at least watch that documentary but as far as I know you are the only one to react to it. Thanks for sharing and I'm glad you found Steely Dan~ ❤
You can't go wrong with Steely Dan."FM"(no static at all)"."peg","Do it again".
Genius.
You're welcome! Every one of there albums are crazy!
Love Steely Dan, they have a lot of music that just mellows you out, puts you in a great mood, would love to hear you react to more of their catalog
You make me so emotional with your reaction, this is my favorite of theirs and just love your appreciation of my 1st love band ❤
Musician's musicians!
Masters of the tongue-in-cheek 70s cool, funked up studio perfectionists, The Dan ARE the tragedy that grooves you smoother but wiser! I know, I lived'em. Take a drag and a swig of GREEN EARRINGS, CAVES OF ALTIMIRA, FM, BABYLON SISTERS, THE FEZ...there is NO WEAK DAN creation!! Enjoy the feast!!
So grateful I got to see them in concert twice. One was with Steve Winwood which was a double treat. I have every album and I can't think of one song I don't like on some level.
It's been said, that you listen to Steely Dan when you get better at listening to music. 😎
I’m quite tickled that you’re discovering this great music, and going after it smartly.
I watch you react more than I listen later. First reactions are the key, and it shows all over what you’re thinking...in a good way!
Awesome. So much great music I’m aware of you “missed” growing up. Great to you for recognizing then fixing something that wasn’t as it should be. There are to be no barriers in music...period.
The rabbit hole is deep. Best records IMO: Gaucho and Aja. Been listening since the 70's. Finally got to c them live in Virginia Beach just b4 Walter Becker passed.......the act was very tight, polished, and left me with not one single disappointment. So glad I got to c them live at least once b4 Walter passed....RIP. Great reaction.
The Dan will change your life! Try Peg. I think you’ll like it😏
Kid Charlemagne, Babylon Sisters, Don't Take Me Alive, FM, Josie, My Old School, and about a hundred more! Their music makes you nostalgic for a place you've never been. That's how good they are
The name " Steely Dan" comes from a vibrator add in Playboy or Penthouse. Just a historical fact. I played this tape out when we had our Boom Boxes.
Deacon Blues is a great song too.
Steely Dan was my first high school experience (73-76) and I loved them the moment I heard them, and it made me very picky as a music listener. Then I heard Fleetwood Mac after that, and I followed their path of sound. My grandparents played traditional Slavic music and that was very unique, and my parents were from the Big Band, Opera eras so I was exposed to some great musicians. In high school my sister was a singer and married a classical 12-string guitarist from Spain in their band over there in Europe. I didn't know how blessed I was in the 1970s : ) I couldn't stand the cheap pop or any of the 1980s music and had to wait until the 1990s music to enjoy the sounds, rhythm, and atmosphere again.
Listen to Aja by Steely Dan...drums are amazing and so is the sax, guitar, bass and vocals... pretty much everything is awesome in Aja.
I really, really appreciate you.
I have cancer and your reviews, along with the ones you and your wife do, are so fun to watch.
You kids reacting to music I LOVED when I was a kid, .... great to see.
Stay inspired, enjoy!
Soooooooo glad you like what’s on show🎧
Their music will live forever and ever- and I have a large scotch in my hand coming from Scotland 🏴 SLANJ bro🎸👍
Welcome to the Dan! There are so many....like all of them. Pretzel Logic, Third world man, glamour profession and too many others.
Welcome to the club. Youre in for the treat of your life! Go 70's!
OK, rabbit hole time! I dare you to find a Steely Dan song that isn't great!
Best band from my time….. and still is now !!!! ASIA I believe their best album !!!!
LOVE STEELY DAN !!!!!!!!!! 😘
Check out Deacon Blues !!!!! GREAT !!!
As others have said. No need to ever look for a live version of any song. They are the masters of studio production.
Steely Dan makes me reminisce for the 70's.
Love Steely Dan. Check out Hey Nineteen. Deacon Blues.
Hey W., I read a comment below suggesting the full album "Aja" by Steely Dan, and I couldn't agree more. This is one of the greatest albums of the 70's and musically, should be experienced as a full body of work. Peace to you, brother W.!
Aja is one of the greatest albums . Ever.
Great music is timeless, and we’re talking about a rare, one of a kind, band, that checks every box on every album they ever made, showing again and again, that they, Steel Dan, are a great band that made timeless music.
The idea of comparing great bands seems to me to be an exercise in sophomoric one-upsmanship. Great is a category that rests far above.
Best. Album. Ever. Thanks for this one!
I swear, I think the word groovy best describes Steely Dan. Every damn song is a musical masterpiece. I still listen to them regularly. It just doesn’t get old.
Haha, that look of bliss on your face. We've all been there. 😁
Next "Pretzel Logic" You must be joking son, where DID you get them shoes?!
a cyclist ran over my foot the other day.
does that make me a luckless pedestrian?
@@TheCornishCockney What?! It must be something that I missed in translation! Meanwhile back at the ranch....
Steely Dan: DO IT again! Kid Charlemagne!
Wing let you down!!
Stay with this LP, Can' t go wrong, Its fire.
Another great one and another Fav of mine!!!
I bought Aja upon it's release and it stayed on my turntable forever. I find it endlessly fascinating.
Been a"Dan Fan" since 1973 and their music never gets old..I was only 15 the first time I heard them and never stopped lisrening to them since...great review you gave on Black Cow too...😎
it is one of my favorite songs ever..
They display the BEST musical talent, and the lyrics can delve into the depths of the broken soul.
I love that Victor Feldman gave you an eargasm.
Fusion and prog rock with a whole lotta funk! They don’t have one bad song.
This band is great... the name is unique. They named themselves after a certain apparatus from the William Burroughs novel Naked Lunch. Never a bad record, never a bad cut... go back to the first two records...
My all time favorite band! Best live concert ever!
My all time favorite album is "Aja" by Steely Dan.
Beautiful album cover designed by pre SNL Phil Hartman.
Tried a Black Cow 20 years ago because of this song. Too sweet! Love the song, hate the drink! I’ll stick to my Makers Mark while listening to Steely Dan.
Wow, your first reaction to SD. What a blessing.
One of the greatest albums ever
You have just had your fate changed in terms of music" you have had your first taste of Steely Dan and there is no way back" welcome down the rabbit hole
Well done. You finally got here! Welcome to a whole new level of sonic pleasure. Try Peg, Home At Last, Pretzel Logic, Night By Night and The Caves Of Altamira just to get you started. I’m so envious that you still have your Steely Dan journey in front of you. You’re gonna LOVE it!!!!
A great example of musicians serving the music.
This whole album is killer!!! Glad u liked 'em!
This was straight up pop in the 70's when I was listening to it on the radio. It played next to Blondie, Ambrosia, Ohio Players, The Commodores etc. Popular music was much more mixed on the radio back then. I miss that.
I recommend PEG for the funky Steely Dan. One of my favorites and just about the most pop-y.
I agree with a lot of the comments that suggest you always do the studio versions of their songs. But this doesn't mean they're not good live. I'm 62 and have been going to concerts for more than 45 years; I've seen all the greats live. Steely Dan has the finest musicianship of any band I've ever seen live! They're still touring (without Walter R.I.P.) and I'd highly recommend you go see them if they come to your area. They're still fabulous! And yes; your dad will know this one.
Loved your reaction. Everything about this composition has a sophistication you rarely find, that is so complete. It feels unhurried, from start to finish, where the backing horn arrangements and vocals, sit perfectly behind beautiful sax and electric piano solos. The outro is just brilliant. As great as their catalog is, this imho is one of their very finest songs. Adding Aja ( the song) and a couple more here, and it does put this on that list of desert island must have albums. 🏝😎
I just heard that first Chicago album in the brass section in this song. Oh, I feel so sorry for you young people, you can't sneak into the closet and check out your Dad's record collection. On the other hand, you were never forced to listen to Polish Polka music as a child, like I was.
I love watching people react to Steely Dan. As a big fan, you will often hear about the big hits they had. But because you are a musician, you may want to try 'Your Gold Teeth II'. The jazz elements are truly out of this world.
On a TV bio I saw, Donald and Walter said that as New Yorkers they fantasized about the West Coast and tried to write about L.A., but when they moved out there in their first opportunity as producers (I think) they immediately started writing about New York. - LOL.....
I love your commentary for this song. Steely Dan is the best! 💕
Steely Dan are Genius
Thank you so much for this! Totally dig your smart commentary, and the fact that you're spinning this great music.i love that you're studying these songs. Giving them their due. Will you please consider their burner, Don't Take Me Alive? So hot, razor sharp!
Loved your reaction to this!!
Steely Dan is legendary for the quality of music production.
Steely Dan is ear candy!! 😁 Grew up with his music! Great reaction 👍💜
