When real musicians get off work........they listen to Steely Dan.
It’s a high class musicians rabbit hole you’ve entered with this.
Any suggestion you get about Steely Dan songs will all be good.
I highly recommend your next Steely Dan reaction to scorch your socks off, listen to Reelin in the Years.
Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin said his favorite guitar solo of all time is from Reelin in the Years. He rated it 12 out of 10!
Steely Dan is also a band who’s music MUST MUST MUST always be heard from the studio recordings. They are recording masters. They hired different Gun slinger musicians to record their songs with.
Many of those hired guns never toured with them.
Elliott Randall is the guitar player on Reelin in the Years and recorded it all in 1 take. He turned them down to join the band as a permanent member because he used to be friends with Jimi Hendrix who confided in him how everybody want a piece of him with his success and Elliott did not want that for himself.
    Enjoy!

Steely Dan is primarily two guys, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker ... along with the best of the session musicians available. And these other musicians varied from song to song, album to album. Among those, Michael McDonald, later of the Doobie Brothers fame, played/sang on one of their albums. Both Donald Fagen and Becker ... musical genius.

Steely Dan is one of musics deepest rabbit hole, a rabbit hole that would amaze Alice. All SD songs should be reacted to with a lyric video. SD is smart, funny, ironic, adult and occasionally obscure and complex. Even how they got their name is clever. Every song is played at a high level. Try "Peg" next, then "Do It Again", "Kid Charlemagne", "Aja", "Deacon Blues", the entire "Aja" album, "Hey Nineteen", "The Fez", "Green Earrings", "Reelin' In The Years", "Babylon Sisters", "Dirty Work", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Don't Take Me Alive", "My Old School", "Any Major Dude Will Tell You", and "Doctor Wu". There are many more because there's really no bad SD song. Steely Dan, as says Tre Narcisse, Kings Of The Groove.
By the way, Rudy's Bar and Grill still exists here in NYC on 9th ave, between 44th and 45th. Then as now it is essentially a dive bar. At the writing of this song it was frequented by musicians, actors, artists, and pros, being so close to what then was 42nd street and pro central.

Steeley Dan is a whole other animal. Not rock. Jazzy funk fusion. These days, this is known as “adult album rock” or as “yacht rock”....a catch all phrase form smooooth and sophisticated music. Something for the playlist for a fancy party. This is a studio band....and some of the best studio musicians in LA played on their albums. Highest production values; highest level musicianship; smooth vibe. You have tons of great songs from these folks to enjoy. This is from their album AJA (pronounced Asia) which is one of their best. You might SERIOUSLY consider an album reaction to AJA....You will get tons of suggestions for songs. Pick one. They’re all great. Some people don’t like them because they’re not heavy rock. Some people have narrow tastes.

You have no idea what you are in for going down the Steely Dan rabbit hole. They are perfectionists and it shows in every song they do. The hits are endless and the best part is no two songs are the same. Each song is like going on a new adventure and you just have to sit back and enjoy the ride. Picking one song for you to react to is impossible. They are all great.

Steely Dan was my first high school experience (73-76) and I loved them the moment I heard them, and it made me very picky as a music listener. Then I heard Fleetwood Mac after that, and I followed their path of sound. My grandparents played traditional Slavic music and that was very unique, and my parents were from the Big Band, Opera eras so I was exposed to some great musicians. In high school my sister was a singer and married a classical 12-string guitarist from Spain in their band over there in Europe. I didn't know how blessed I was in the 1970s : ) I couldn't stand the cheap pop or any of the 1980s music and had to wait until the 1990s music to enjoy the sounds, rhythm, and atmosphere again.

Well done. You finally got here! Welcome to a whole new level of sonic pleasure. Try Peg, Home At Last, Pretzel Logic, Night By Night and The Caves Of Altamira just to get you started. I’m so envious that you still have your Steely Dan journey in front of you. You’re gonna LOVE it!!!!

This was straight up pop in the 70's when I was listening to it on the radio. It played next to Blondie, Ambrosia, Ohio Players, The Commodores etc. Popular music was much more mixed on the radio back then. I miss that.
I recommend PEG for the funky Steely Dan. One of my favorites and just about the most pop-y.

I agree with a lot of the comments that suggest you always do the studio versions of their songs. But this doesn't mean they're not good live. I'm 62 and have been going to concerts for more than 45 years; I've seen all the greats live. Steely Dan has the finest musicianship of any band I've ever seen live! They're still touring (without Walter R.I.P.) and I'd highly recommend you go see them if they come to your area. They're still fabulous! And yes; your dad will know this one.

Loved your reaction. Everything about this composition has a sophistication you rarely find, that is so complete. It feels unhurried, from start to finish, where the backing horn arrangements and vocals, sit perfectly behind beautiful sax and electric piano solos. The outro is just brilliant. As great as their catalog is, this imho is one of their very finest songs. Adding Aja ( the song) and a couple more here, and it does put this on that list of desert island must have albums. 🏝😎

I just heard that first Chicago album in the brass section in this song. Oh, I feel so sorry for you young people, you can't sneak into the closet and check out your Dad's record collection. On the other hand, you were never forced to listen to Polish Polka music as a child, like I was.

I love watching people react to Steely Dan. As a big fan, you will often hear about the big hits they had. But because you are a musician, you may want to try 'Your Gold Teeth II'. The jazz elements are truly out of this world.

On a TV bio I saw, Donald and Walter said that as New Yorkers they fantasized about the West Coast and tried to write about L.A., but when they moved out there in their first opportunity as producers (I think) they immediately started writing about New York. - LOL.....
