I bought this on its release and it stayed on my turntable forever! It is easily one of the most influential in my life and one of the few that still has a feel to that never gets old.
Wait till they find out Steel Dan is the name of a woman's pleasure device from a 1960's Novel. Kinda gives you a hint about the Type of Music they write about. Very Cryptic and very seedy...
It''s also a popular mammal. There's a large group of people that dedicate their whole lifestyle to this animal calling themselves "The Cowboys" no joke.
Frank Zappa said, "Jazz isn’t dead, it just smells funny." For those folks that can’t get a grip on jazz, The Dan delivers the goods with an admixture replete with R&B, Afro Cuban rhythms, Rock&Roll, etc that seduces the listeners to succumb to the gravity of jazz, like tides obey the moon. One becomes a lover of jazz without knowing it. Like those that don’t care for classical music, but have been moved to tears by it when watching those movies that employ the classical as soundtracks.
"Rock" as a genre covers a lot of ground. Steely Dan played rock, and funk, and a bit of soul, all while heavily jazz influenced. One of my favorite bands.
Y'all should definitely invest more time exploring Steely Dan's catalogue; they are hands-down one of the greatest songwriting duos/bands ever. Steely Dan totally fucking rock!
Steely Dan. I liked them for a while. But in the last 5 years I've really appreciated their music. Their catalog is so vast. Yall need to check out Hey Nineteen.
Steely Dan is the probably the best bands of all time. They meshed and spanned Jazz/Soul/Rock Fusion with some of the greatest players of the day in the studio. There is barely a song that you will skip on any of their albums. They are timeless, and got regular play on the radio when they came out and for decades and are still covered by Big Bands, funk bands, jazz bands, rock and acoustic players.
Rock is so diverse. As a teenager my friends and I would listen to AC/DC Aerosmith Van Halen etc.. during the party, Pink Floyd at the end of the night with the lights off. Steely Dan when we wanted to groove, Almond brothers, Eagles, when we were in more of a country mood- Throw in Tommy Bolin private eye album once in a while - rock is diverse - we all listened to multiple genres of rock- good music was the kry
This is one of the greatest albums of all time. Every single song is incredibly awesome!! I encourage you dudes to continue to enjoy the flavor of this iconic band!
Its no accident that these guys compose such funky jazzy music. Both Fagen and Becker grew up listening to Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Dave Brubeck etc in the 50s and early 60s. Their music was the ultimate Jazz Rock Funk Fusion. See also Weather Report, Return to Forever.
@lmkeniston216 Not saying that there wasn't any good music in the 80's and 90's. Just doesn't even compare to the depth and breadth of music in the 70's in so many genres.
Every Album, every song. There are no bad Steely Dan songs. Some maybe better than others (personal taste) but there are no bad ones. I'm 73 and been listening to every album since the first constantly, and still finding something new in the mix. I never get tired of them. There are bands that can do a very decent job of covering them, but nobody can create like them.
You can't put Steely Dan in a box, they'll leak out. You can't lock them in a room, they'll climb out of a window. Can't handcuff them they constantly break the chain. This group cannot be contained Period. Love the reaction.
Rudy's Bar and Grill is a real bar on the Upper West Side (?) in NYC. It's been around since 1933. Frank Sinatra used to go there a lot. Photos of the inside are on the internet.
Night By Night, Dr. Wu, Green Earrings, Your Gold Teeth, Parker’s Band…get past the radio hits and there’s a treasure trove of crazy good music. My No. 1 band for 45 years. I’ve seen them four times, twice with Walter Becker and twice since he passed. RIP.b
I turned 15 in August ‘77. I’m 62 now and I never get tired of listening to this album. It truly is a masterpiece. There is a “Classic Albums” documentary about how it was made. Well worth a watch.
This album AJA you need to listen to it entirety as the background music for a party… the ambience that it brings will give you a party to remember!!!!🎉😂❤
The 70's had a very wide range of music that was available. Individual bands and artists would cover one end of the spectrum to the other. You never knew what you were gonna get when a new album came out. It was a great time to be a teenager!
Y'all gonna love Deacon Blues, Home At Last, Hey Nineteen, Josie, Peg, Do It Again, Dirty Work, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, man there are so many more. Don't sleep on em.
Aja is a sonic masterpiece and is still used to test high end hifi in those expensive equipment shops. The musicality is utter perfection because they only used the very top session musicians of the time. A time that involved REAL INSTRUMENTS !! And REAL MUSICIANS !!! I know, how radical is that.
I purchased the Aja album when it first came out. I played it to death BUT I still have that same album, and it sounds great because some of us treated our records like gold... carefully handling them, keeping the turntable stylus balanced and in pristine shape, cleaning the vinyl with special cloth, etc.. We were crazy about our vinyl collection. I'm proud to say my collection is amazing. That album cover is also so evocative of the title song! It always transported me to another beautiful, exotic place. Greetings from Brooklyn!
The lyrics to this song and the music together are absolute fire!! Love the line - “…just when it seems so clear, that it’s over now - drink your big black cow - and get outta here.” Yaaaaaassss!!!!! Steely Dan is definitely in a stratosphere all by themselves.
This album is named as one of the best mastered albums ever by mastering engineers, and one of the top references for mixes. Pretty much their own sound - both the music and the lyrics. Genre? It's a mash-up of rock/jazz/funk/soul, often with a touch of sarcasm and cynicism - both music and lyrics.. It's also one of favorites. :-) Thanks for the reaction and discussion!
Back in the 70's we used to listen to a "Progressive Rock" station out of Philly, who played all of Steely Dan's unique music... whereas the other "Rock" stations in the area, only played the songs that were more like "Top 40" hits. That being said, this Progressive Rock Station, always lead me to believe that Steely Dan was in fact, progressive rock. Please play more Steely Dan. They have quite a few great albums! Thanks guys!
A friend of mine said to me years ago, "This life is all about validation." Well, I guess. But that is certainly true for me as far as Steely Dan is concerned. I LOVE that a younger generation like yours is listening and appreciating music that I always loved. Well done, men. Props to you!
In the mid eighties I was a little skate punk, but Steely Dan was my guilty pleasure and I never told anyone. Years later, I find out my best friend felt the same way. We now openly enjoy SD!! Love them sooo much.
Man, I miss the electric piano. That's an instrument that disappeared in the 80's, but it has a sound all its own. Steely Dan were a musicians' band. Every band in the 70's admired them. They were a genre of their own, but the closest label would "jazz fusion". Great stuff. The entire _Aja_ album is diamond fine. You'll enjoy the rabbit hole. :)
You about to get into some of the tightest slick tunes by this amazing band. Kid Charlemagne is on 🔥. They used so many of the best session musicians ever assembled and it shows in there final cuts. Thanks for sharing.
When my wife passed and I moved, I sold about 3,000 of my Albums except for about 20 CD's. This album was one of them. It's great from start to finish.
This album came out when I was in junior high, and it was one of my favorite albums even at that young age - I've always loved great music! The entire album is absolutely fantastic!
This is some of the finest musicianship you will ever hear. I have been a music lover for my entire life (I'm 63) and this album is the only perfect album I've ever heard. I grew up on jazz and my dad loved this.
There is a Latin term " sui generis" which means "of it's own kind". The album 'AJA' is not only if it's own kind, it exists in its own universe. The only other album which can claim the same is KIND OF BLUE by Miles Davis.
You can never go wrong with Steely Dan! Great choice. Love your reaction! A “Black Cow” is actually a root beer float, sometimes with alcohol or not! 💐🌸✌️
I love your channel ❤ I graduated in “77” and this band was huge in my world! I would’ve never called them a rock band! You said it all “ they have soul”….thanks for the great reactions!
I just love seeing you guys get into the Steely Dan groove. They’re so smooth. Watch the Aja documentary, the making of the album and you’ll see how they pull so many different artists in to get each particular sound.
Aja is one of the greatest albums ever created. DO more guys.
I second this emotion
The Royal Scam and Gaucho also remarkable albums.
I bought this on its release and it stayed on my turntable forever! It is easily one of the most influential in my life and one of the few that still has a feel to that never gets old.
1978 ALBUM OF THE YEAR... for a reason.
Over rated
Steely Dan is their own genre!
utterly unique.
Yes, I wouldn't call it rock.
So true
I was going to leave this precise comment. Thanks for helping me to seed the light.
Yes, as were Supertramp and Sparks. Letter S is Special!
I love watching REAL music lovers discover Steely Dan. It's always a magical moment.
Agreed.
SAME!
AIRPLAY BEATS is a great channel...!
Some music just moves us and triggers memories in our lives.many steely Dan tracts do this for me.what a phenomenal sound.
Ya'll gonna recognize a bunch of Steely Dan, their beats been sampled so many times, It's a deep, deep rabbit hole.
Wait till they find out Steel Dan is the name of a woman's pleasure device from a 1960's Novel. Kinda gives you a hint about the Type of Music they write about. Very Cryptic and very seedy...
Lol....the chrome one.....I've been listening to them for many years. Good to see others discover this music. 🥒 😆 🤣 😂

Steely Dan is what professional musicians listen to when they're not working.
Exactly.
Peg, Deacon blues,FM no static,Hey nineteen, Aja ,and HOME AT LAST I HIGHLY RECOMMEND !
Josi!
Pretzel logic with Boz Scaggs& michael Macdonald!
a Black Cow was a type of milkshake in the 50's and 60's
It's also an alcoholic drink with root beer, evaporated milk, and bourbon.
@@michlkwitzpretty sure this is referring to the alcoholic drink, and not the milkshake.
It was also a chewy chocolate and caramel candy bar. Not relevant here but just to cover all bases. 🤣
It''s also a popular mammal. There's a large group of people that dedicate their whole lifestyle to this animal calling themselves "The Cowboys" no joke.
@@RabbiSteve Ya, this ain't no "malt shop" they're talking about here!
Many lifelong fans will say that Steely Dan is their own unique music genre. Their songs touch rock, R&B, funk, and Jazz.
Somebody said that Steel Dan was your favorite bands favorite band. Damn right.
Steely :)
Yes. Who is your favorite band listening to? Steely Dan.
Steely Dan is their own genre
Frank Zappa said, "Jazz isn’t dead, it just smells funny." Masters of the TIGHT groove. Every piece on time and on point.
Consistently. Song after song. Album after album.
Well said!
One of their studio musicians once said Becker and Fegan would break it down to a tenth of a beat. That's getting serious about tight!
I’ve never seen a person (not one!) NOT LOVE this song after they hear it.
THE DAN IS THEIR OWN GENRE....
PLAY THE ENTIRE ALBUM AND YOU'LL BE HOOKED.
ALL THEIR OTHER ALBUMS ARE ALSO GREAT.
So jazzy, funky, and outrageously good!!!!!
“So outrageous!”
Can't go wrong with Steely Dan
It’s amazing how many hip hop tracks use samples from Steely Dan songs.
Ingredients For an orginal Black Cow
2 Tbsp chocolate syrup
1 cup coca-cola
1 Tbsp cream
1 scoop chocolate ice cream
Stroke or heart attack first?
One of the best songs of all time .
Steely Dan is one of the most underrated legendary fusionist two person band ever Donald Fagen amazing
"Rock" as a genre covers a lot of ground. Steely Dan played rock, and funk, and a bit of soul, all while heavily jazz influenced. One of my favorite bands.

Steely Dan.

You could probably randomly pick any Steely Dan song and enjoy it. Fenom ain't lying, y'all are in for a treat if you keep up the Steely Dan ride.
.Steely Dan has the best studio musicians in the business period! They integrate jazz, blues rock better than anyone else.😊
You cannot not dig this song…it’s a vibe
Apex of musicianship.

Steely Dan is a group that did things outside of the rock mainstream, and they enjoyed great success.
This is one of the greatest albums of all time. Every single song is incredibly awesome!! I encourage you dudes to continue to enjoy the flavor of this iconic band!
I consider "Peg" from this album the best pop song ever recorded.
I will stipulate to that...infectious

I think Steely Dan is one of the most sampled groups out there , y'all have to do more cause I love to see you guys groovin happily for real .
Down for this rabbit hole.
Everyone smiling, gotta love music that puts a smile on your face
Fagan and Becker brought in the very best “session artists” to help musically attain their vision…..Outstanding duo, and contributing artists.
So right that 80’’s and 90’s don’t hold a candle to ‘70s
It's my opinion that the 70's was the greatest decade of music in human history.
I second that!
👍👍 It's the damn truth.
lol try some Soundgarden

Kid Charlemagne NEXT
Which has also been sampled.
This is my vote for next!
Live with Fagen, McDonald and Scaggs- the Dukes of September!!!

I got this album from my musician brother in-law on my 14th birthday. The whole lp is still relevant and listen to it on road trips. A gem. ❤
And that groove in the beginning was 20yrs before the tune from the 90's

Fantastic band always considered them more of a fusion jazz band or a fusion rock band . Great music.
Aja is a tremendous lp.worth checking out.
Steely Dan Yes! I have Sooo many favorite artists. Y'all keep going! There's so much to choose from
it just doesn’t get much better than this yo ! so smooth!
Takes me right back to those days! 70 80s we were so blessed!

You’ll love that whole album. It’s all jazz inspired. The title track is absolutely legendary.
In the mid eighties I was a little skate punk, but Steely Dan was my guilty pleasure and I never told anyone. Years later, I find out my best friend felt the same way. We now openly enjoy SD!! Love them sooo much.
I was a teenager and Steely Dan had the best songs, played alot on the Black FM channels.🎉🎸🪘🎺
Once you hear; “you’ll know” exactly!
Yes finally some Dan
Your gonna be surprised

My two late brother's Bill and Bud started to listen to the Dan because I loved them so much ❤️
A staple on smooth jazz progressive radio Steely Dan
I’m so lucky to have lived during that time, lots of good music.
If you're gonna do black cow I'm there baby
I had the 8 track. Now the CD. Aja is so good!!❤❤❤❤

Great music in the 70's light it up and chill, grew up as a teen, listening to Steely Dan...we love the vibe, listen to Deacon Blues
When my wife passed and I moved, I sold about 3,000 of my Albums except for about 20 CD's. This album was one of them. It's great from start to finish.
Gotta call for more Steely! Try song Peg! Has Michael McDonald in back up vocals. Love your reaction!👊🏻
Glad to see Ollie enjoyed this like he did. This album can be played, drop the needle and there’s not a bad note, riff or song on it.
Fun fact: an early member of Steely Dan was comedian Chevy Chase, as drummer. This was prior to the recording of their first album.
I was just watching a documentary on these guys, this song came on and they started singing up town...... so I paused and came over here. 😆❤️✌️
This album came out when I was in junior high, and it was one of my favorite albums even at that young age - I've always loved great music! The entire album is absolutely fantastic!

The Aja album is an incredible piece of musical genius. It’s music you hear as well as music you feel. Great video. Thanks.

I want to say this is my favorite Steely Dan song, but there are just so many. It’s my favorite while I’m listening to it!
