One of my favorite details in this episode is that the frogs are colored like clownfish due to their relationship with the tentacles. Both the frogs in the dungeon and clownfish have almost a symbiotic relationship with tentacles and sea anemones respectively. The frogs’ skin grants them protection from the stinging tentacles, much like how clownfish’s skin protects them against the stinging cells of sea anemones.
That makes a lot of sense! At first I thought they were poison dart frogs bcos their bright colors but when the gang were fighting and none got poisoned I was confused.
it’s even cooler since the tentacles are cnidarians, so they’re in the same phylum as sea anemones :D though i wonder if the frogs resist the stings the same way a clownfish would, or if they have a different strategy?
Oh my god wow yeah Laios' awkward little twist to pick up Kensuke really is that snow outfit twist. Great observations in this. I really like the shot with the dragon at the end emphasizing the target on it's neck too- it's a fun way to get you to pay attention to it while still staying immersed in how big the dragon is with a human POV.
Great video, as always. I am a bit surprised you didn't talk about the pacing of the scene with Chilchuck making a glove and triggering the trap. It felt really unnatural to have 4 characters (frog included) just stand still for long enough for Chil to think, question out loud, cut and make a clove and sneak into the trap. It happened exactly like that in the manga also, but on page it is all static images and you need to connect them temporally yourself so it is easier for the artist to obscure and play with the passage of time. In anime you are watching it more or less in real time, so the fact the 4 characters stood still for so long felt very notably to me. Maybe it is just nitpicking, but to me it felt like a good example of one of the issues of adapting faithfully without accounting for the medium. By contrast the decision to intercut the cooking and sewing montages was a good example of what to change.
No yeah, that's definitely a thing that always sticks out to me as well. A similar thing happens with the Arknights anime, especially season two, except there they don't even have a manga to go off, they're adapting what's basically a minimalist VN and it can really show sometimes. In the game there are moments that feel tense because your brain was filling in the details and sets the pacing for events, meanwhile in the anime some of those moments kinda just get turned into people standing on opposite sides of a big empty space and staring at eachother. And like, I get it you don't always have a lot to work with for an adaptation, so the closer you play it to the original you get these awkward moments where only one thing is happening at a time like with the dungeon meshi example, where these deadly man eating predators politely wait their turn for chilchuck's plan, and the other party members don't try anything either. It's weirdly turn based feeling, actually. The dungeon meshi example is interesting because the cooking/skinning montage immediately after does the opposite, where the manga shows the scenes right after another and Marcille just says her line afterwards, the Anime does a good job cutting the montages together, thwarting the exact issue it had itself included just a few scenes earlier.
I was thinking as well, that they could have easily taken out the part of Chilchuck thinking to himself since he vocalizes the idea shortly after anyways to give the scene more urgency.
Yeah I felt the same. I wonder if it's due to how Dungeons and Dragons the setting feels (and the author of the manga being a CRPG fan), because it felt a lot like the kind of slow decision taking that you have when playing tabletop rol
Someone pointed out there was a mistake where Laios and Marcelle have their equipment after the frog got head-shot by the arrow. Wonder if anyone managed to catch that, cause I sure didn’t, despite how many times I repeated this episode.
Surprised you didn’t mention the one glaring animation error in this episode where you can see Laios and Marcille still have their weapons after the frog trying to eat Chilchuck is killed. Marcille’s is there in the initial shot but Kensuke is shown three separate times. Pretty odd they’d make an error like that.
I think those extra shots of the red dragon seen through windows and alleyways might also be referencing the cover pages for the first three red dragon chapters, which depicted the tail, the foot, and then the head of the dragon. Similar to the scene added in an earlier episode of Marcille doing her hair based on the chapter cover page.
I was so excited to hear what you thought of this episode!!! I agree that some of the episode's cut scenes and pacing felt a little disappointing, but I was so blown away by the art and animation I barely noticed on my first watch I'm a bit bummed that you didnt mention the detail of Chilchuck's face lighting up when he saw the wine and the way he moved when Marcille was trying to hug him, but hearing you talk about all the other cool animation shots definitely made up for it! As always, your sense of humor is on point, I snorted really loud lmao and your character moving around to show emphasis always catches my eye Great video as always!! Really looking forward to your thoughts on whatever they have in store for us :]
same, I was a little sad they skipped the talk about resurrection magic that Namari and the twins had, it added a lot more tension to the story as they are about to fight the dragon if something goes wrong it could mean not only is Falin dead for good, it could also means the death of someone else could be permanent, as we saw the worgs burn to a crisp Also iirc when they found the worgs it's reveal that only "humans" can be revived (In this world humans are a species and Tall man, Halflings, Elves, Dwarfs, etc are sub-species of humans instead of different species) so you can't technically revive a monster as easily as a person, it added a little bit more mystery to the whole curse thing, and also added a more serious tone when something happens... i saw your tumblr post about episode 10 and saved it to watch eventually, and i've finally gotten to it (well i watched them all in order) I love these videos! the manga was shown to me by a friend and i recently finished it (and LOVE it!) and now i'm watching it with my mom lol. she's enjoying it too (although i am a bit worried for her tolerance to the more creepy elements...) it's really great to see animation breakdowns of these episodes (and i hope more too as they come out) as i don't know a lot of the ins and outs of animation despite having a huge love for it. so awesome!
You really know your stuff when it comes to animation You should make a video all about understanding animation techniques, compositing and such A lot of people like myself are very interested in these.
Wow, you surely were waiting for this episode 😅 This certainly is building up for a humongous cliffhanger. Looking forward to what you have to say on the next one ✌🏼
Im honestly so glad to find someone who is as obsessed with dungeon meshi as I am 😭 its my favorite manga and i love hearing your reviews about it! Keep up the good work!! :D
This was such a great video!! I'm always excited to see your thoughts on the new episodes and I can't wait to see more of your dungeon meshi breakdowns in the future!! (Also if anyone saw my comment on the other episode - it took me 8 hours but I got the yarn untangled and I've made a bookmark, a coaster, and a headphone charm!!)
The introduction of the red dragon, with only parts shown at first, seems to me to be a deliberate homage to the appearance of the earth dragon in the first episode of the classic Record of Lodoss Wars. In addition, IIRC, there's some elements reminiscent of the introduction of Giant Robo in the first episode of the anime Giant Robo, particularly the glass cracking from the passage of the best
i imagine that the large pn pan would be fairly ossible with patience, having the camera move slowly and the actors keeping still while in shot, then heva a few minutes to get to point 2
You missed the continuity issue with the frogs: When Senshi is holding off frog, Marcille and Laoi have their weapons after those weapons were already shown falling to the bottom of the stairs
There was a mistake in animation when chilchuk got eaten by frog marcille got her staff back wnd laios got his sword back but their items were thrown down by frogs before xD
It would be interesting if in a setting with people with different life spans they use percentages which would make human comparisons very simple as you could say 100% is destined to die any day
Is there a continuity error in this episode? Marcille and Laios lost their weapons, but the have them again in some frames, before they pick up again in the bottom of the stairs
Super mario 3 looking good. I hate that Trigger skipped all the exposition around resurrection Namari gives on the resurrection center and on the bar / restaurant / inn just like how they skipped the part when Kabru party is wiped out by the mermen
Damn dude, you really added the minecraft sound effect for chilchuck almost getting eaten alive? Like he was just a small snack for the frog? The disrespect to this old man 😔 Lmao. Your sound effects always get a chuckle out of me Also, you noted how each episode shows marcille with a different hairstyle? Talk about building something for the future
This episode confirmed to me what trigger has been doing. Like in episode 7, Trigger seems to be cutting a lot of scenes of the secondary cast. I'm sure it's not a popular sentiment, but I'd argue Dungeon Meshi's biggest problem in the manga is the amount of unnecessary characters. You could remove about half of each dungeon party outside the main crew and have nothing change. Trigger is being picky with which characters they think really need that screen time, and I appreciate that.
@@LunarJaguar Definitely. I hope they include it in the next two episodes because it is important to understand why things go wrong after they kill the dragon. Falin’s deal would be more confusing for anime-only viewers if they just completely cut it out.
@LunarJaguar (spoilers) I'd argue it isn't necessary since Falin is the only death like that, and the information can be conveyed through Marcillie explaining that normal resurrection wouldn't work. Which she mostly does in the manga.
@@ScrubbinOpti while that's true, I think setting it up before hand would be a better move. That way, you can have the audience worry for the characters and set up tension before the fight even happens.
@LunarJaguar that is a good point. I don't really have a rebuttal to that. Still, I get the feeling Trigger is probably going to keep cutting out scenes of the side cast.
looking back at it now im not very fond of the background environment in this episode, the supposed unclearable pathway overridden with overgrown plants look so... bare to me. the hanging vines look awkwardly spread out from each other separately and end up looking like recolored string beans. also i wish they relied/played with the lighting/shading a bit more!!
