Mad Mage, Lunatic Magician, both sounds kinda bad, even if it’s to make sense to say in the dub. The Mad Sorcerer is what the scanlators used and I’m sticking to that.
I love that the english calls him the mad mage because that calls to mind the dnd adventure waterdeep: dungeon of the mad mage, and reinforces that this is the most dnd thing ive ever seen.

can we mention the animation of laios' eyes at the end when chilchuck talked him down, and laios was so shaken and guilty? 🥺 altho i wish they kept the adorably crooked position of his hands in his lap that he had in the manga
idk if the elf being a magician as opposed to a mage is an important distinction character wise, but on the off chance that it is, I would have prefered the english dub call them the Mad Magician. The alliteration is sweet, and we all know that the word mad is supposed to mean insanity in this context, so it works just as well as lunatic magician. Though maybe they went with mad mage for syllable count, either way, lunatic magician feels like a nothing burger of a name in english and its a mouthful to boot, so if i had to pick i definitely prefer mad mage.
Haha yeah I didn't want to get too into the weeds in the video, but while I'm not married to "lunatic magician" in particular for the reasons you've mentioned, the "magician" part definitely makes more sense because he's literally a court magician!

I would not be surprised if you are correct. I kinda feel for the mad mage. I haven’t read the manga but I really think he just wants things to be the way they were. I wonder if Laios would be the one to get through to him.
Ok so for the english translation, there seems to be two different translations? Theres two set of subtitles and one follows the dub script i think, and one... isnt? im not sure why, but that second script seems much more accurate to the source material
@@swampjawn Yeah, both exist! I just wondered which version they meant because they didn't specify why they wanted you to check them out. Maybe so you can compare the different voice castings? Idk! Chiller episode, definitely but definitely perplexing on the translation side. Not only in English, as in Italian there were several parts that made no sense at all and made me switch subs to English. I wonder what happened, there were some perplexing choices earlier too but this one was near incomprehensible at times... Hopefully it does not stay that way, but my optimism is waning episode by episode...
I mean, have you really been watching the series with the Italian subs? They are pretty clearly translated from the English subs, and in a pretty terrible way (didn't they translate "party" with "partito" in this one?). Just stick with the English subs and the Japanese dub, or with the Italian dub (since that one is translated by a different person altogether, and AFAIK it was translated from Japanese).
From what I've heard the translators are mostly working off the script rather than actually seeing the episode in advance so they're missing a lot of visual context. The English Subs and Dubs are probably different teams as well which is why you have circumstances where one side is right and the other isn't
I was personally very distressed by this episode, while I know it's scheduled for 24 episodes.. I was enjoying the lighthearted adventure. ( First anime i've ever watched where it suddenly has a tonal shift like this.. )
It's just a Star Wars reference in all languages, I just happened to show it in Spanish. It's a line that's repeated several times throughout the Star Wars franchise and combined with the later scene that mimics the trash compactor scene from the first Star Wars movie, I'm pretty confident it's a deliberate reference.
@@swampjawn well, compacting rooms are a staple of dungeons/ruins so I'm not sure it was deliberate, but I see your point, everything can be a Star Wars reference just like evrything can be Jojo's reference.
Yeah, the translation issues are not great, but I'm still fond of the performances here. At least fan subs can correct the issue, but I'm gonna keep watching the dub.
I can see how it would come off that way in this moment, but I hope you keep giving it a chance! It's really not that type of 'dark for the sake of being dark' story, in fact I'd say it just keeps getting funnier. A nuanced story involves darkness and light!
Do we know for sure that the mage is a “he”? I’m asking because since Japanese doesn’t have any pronouns or gendered nouns, it might be possible that the mage were a woman or maybe a gender neutral entity. Or I might’ve just missed the part where he was confirmed to be a “he”🤔
We do. I can't point to exactly where it's confirmed and I (and some translators) were very confused about it at first when reading it initially, but yeah he's a he. Elves just look very androgynous.
I watching all your dungeon meshi videos but the usual background music that starts @03:33 is so damn annoying and pervasive it has taken over the identity of your videos. No idea how Trigger is doing that, but I'm all in for the second cour with this level of quality. Looking forward to the next breakdown as well ✌🏼
Yeah, it seemed pretty obvious that the Orcs didn't recognize Senshi because he had bathed. I haven't read the manga, and I picked up on that.
i love these breakdown videos! thanks again for your insight!
Hmm, I thought that when chilchuck mentioned that he has three people to worry about, he was talking about his kids 🤔
That translation error in English is interesting bc the German dub gets it right
I like how the eye of the mad mage, when they are angry, seem to create a Polycoria effect, like there are two eye on each eye instead of one
Love the little foreshadowing you hide in those videos :)
I loved Leed, she's so cute. I hope she gets more screentime.
YOOOOO Falin's eyes! I didn't put that together, thank you
i love the way yu highight the animator for a specific part and the brilliance they employed to pul off what they did. they deserve all the praise in the world
9:48 (anime spoilers at this point, idk if it's been spilled by the latest ep?)
I thought it could also be taken as him being worried about his daughters, if he died. They haven't been mentioned yet, and they're adults by now, but it would still be at the forefront of a father's mind, wouldn't it?
Is it weird I’m looking forward to seeing Senshi on a boat so a “Sailor Senshi” pun can be made?
Great video!
Has anyone noticed the ghosts are the people in the paintings. They look kind of familiar that way, just looking at the clothes, but that's just me looking too close, maybe.
I would not be surprised if you are correct. I kinda feel for the mad mage. I haven’t read the manga but I really think he just wants things to be the way they were. I wonder if Laios would be the one to get through to him.
as an anime only (for now), i also recognized that taking a bath made senshi almost unrecognizable for the orcs!
Leed is so cute! She reminds me of my cat I love her!
Great video!
manga spoiler, but do you think the "three people" chilchuck is worrying about here could be about his kids? not the rest of the party?
The scene of Marcille hitting the dragons was better in the manga tbh maybe they didn't have much budget left.
5:33 yep, I caught that
Engagement
Ok so for the english translation, there seems to be two different translations? Theres two set of subtitles and one follows the dub script i think, and one... isnt? im not sure why, but that second script seems much more accurate to the source material
They took the scene were laios, chillchuck and senshi hug while falin is down 😢
Next itll be time to teach him about the birds and the bees....that was not a joke 😂 no its not poor Chillchuck
"Watch the Spanish dub" I wonder if they meant the Spanish (from Spain) one or the LatAm one 😅
I didn't know both existed! I only had the LatAm one..
I'm not sure why, but the mobile app has WAYY more languages available
@@swampjawn Yeah, both exist! I just wondered which version they meant because they didn't specify why they wanted you to check them out. Maybe so you can compare the different voice castings? Idk!
Being a translator myself, I find the differences in translation choices fascinating, but that's a complete whole analysis on its own 🤷.
LatAm dub✌🏻
From 1 to 12 Episode was so enjoy to watch but when episode 13 was so bad i watch until 20 and i feel like this anime now i have to drop this anime and waste my enjoyment that i can i watch better than that
Day... whatever of asking for that Namari conversation. I've lost hope.
9:51 _what_
Chiller episode, definitely but definitely perplexing on the translation side.
Fair enough, but yes I have been. As not all the ones I've been watching it with are as proficient with English as I am unfortunately.
From what I've heard the translators are mostly working off the script rather than actually seeing the episode in advance so they're missing a lot of visual context.
The English Subs and Dubs are probably different teams as well which is why you have circumstances where one side is right and the other isn't
Whats with Chilchuk specifically getting all these mistranslations....? My man would NOT say cringe.
Izutsumi would.
Hes an old man okay hes just trying to get with the times
I think it would be funny if Chilchuck started using slang like that to tease his kids, only for it to start slipping into his actual vocabulary 😂
I was personally very distressed by this episode, while I know it's scheduled for 24 episodes.. I was enjoying the lighthearted adventure. ( First anime i've ever watched where it suddenly has a tonal shift like this.. )
as a native spanish speaker I don't get the spanish dub joke, "tengo un mal presentimiento" it is a common phrase even real people use
@@swampjawn well, compacting rooms are a staple of dungeons/ruins so I'm not sure it was deliberate, but I see your point, everything can be a Star Wars reference just like evrything can be Jojo's reference.
where do you find the rough drafts/key frames? where it says who made the frame
Do you know any shipy??
5:05 Man... Marcille have thighs!!!

But whos the Delicious in the dungeon
Do you now any ships!? :D
🐤🐝
Yeah, the translation issues are not great, but I'm still fond of the performances here. At least fan subs can correct the issue, but I'm gonna keep watching the dub.
I hate stories that do this, "you thought it was dark, but just wait!" type shit.
And it looked so good too.
I can see how it would come off that way in this moment, but I hope you keep giving it a chance! It's really not that type of 'dark for the sake of being dark' story, in fact I'd say it just keeps getting funnier.
A nuanced story involves darkness and light!
English dub is so much better than the sub
Now when I think "lemme check out swamp jawn's new dungeon meshi video that crappy call center hold music plays in my head and I dont want to watch anymore
Watch the spanish dub
OH SHIT HE DID IT LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! VAMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
