ACTUALLY ABOUT THE DWARF BEARD THING. We see young Senshi spend multiple consecutive days as a youngster, but he never grows any beard hair in that days-long period! This means that Laios' lack of beard hair reflects dwarf hair growing SLOWER then tallmen hair! Chillchuck most likely just grew his beard normally, with Ryoko Kui deciding to exagerate a little to avoid a character design existing for an awkward amount of time. also Dwaf hair growing really slowly would explain why its such an important thing to dwarf culture. It takes almost a decade to grow one like Senshi has, albeit a messy one.
Senshi has been in dungeon for something like 100 years! He only said 10 years when he first met the party because he'd lost track of time. Hes about 30 when the dungeon is first discovered but hes over 100 when he meet Laois' party, so he's been down there an insanely long time!
Personally I think it's that Chilchuck's peach fuzz converted into raspy shadow when he transformed, while Laios' shaved face stayed shaved, but it'd make sense if different races grew hair at different rates too.
It's so sad since we've seen how different his perception of people is when they treat him nice, but WE know that's not at all what he's like, just like with Shuro
This episode to me confirmed that this adaptation was at its best when it took creative liberties in the direction in order to better fit the tv animation medium
Im all for Laios slow and steady growth. Bro was all heart at the start and now hes becoming more like a leader without losing his usual quirkyness. I love this show
My favorite scene of the episode - and one of the best in the anime - is absolutely that last anime-original view from outside the trolley, through the window, as the party descends one by one for their meal, with the narration restating and recontextualizing the main theme of the series introduced in the first episode. "Eat or be eaten, for eating is the sole privilege of the living". Thank you so much, these videos have really made this whole journey, this half a year so special. Enjoy your break, and see you again later!
It felt so weird going from episode 23, which was very restrained in its animation, to an absolute blast. I also forgot how funny these chapters are, and studio trigger made it even better. The ominous music of the disc gargoyle made me burst out laughing.

A little anime-only detail I really liked in this episode is the part where Izutsumi folds her ears down as she attempts to block out the conversation happening and go back to sleep, it’s very relatable as someone who’s been in similar situations. I also really like the similarly anime-only detail of how one of her ears gets bent at an angle because it’s resting against Marcille’s head while she’s comforting Marcille against her will, it adds a lot to emphasizing the physical closeness of that moment. Thank you so much for doing this series! This has been one of the things I’ve looked forwards to each week regarding the series, with the others being the actual episode releases and then streaming them for friends, and I’m just as sad that I won’t be watching one of your videos each week as I am that I won’t be watching a new dungeon meshi episode each week. I’m eagerly looking forwards to whatever you do next!
Seeing this breakdows were such a fresh air and as an artist, much appreciated they also kind of unique and rare obviously, and what's why I just suggest you continue to do it for other shows, if possible, like Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi, which is insanely good and has a lot interesting artistic chices as well. Cute detail, that the circle they form together holding hands is the same as the opening. Hope you get a breather after running this incredible marathon! My partner and I have loved tuning into your work each week and look forward to whatever you produce next.
It probably has already been mentioned somewhere in the comments, but the transformations of the gargoyles seem to be based on famous statues (/manhole covers) 1. The plate with a face on it looks a lot like the "Bocca della Verità" (english "mouth of truth"), which is located in Rome and quite the tourist attraction. There's a myth about it biting off the hands of liars (or people who lie while having their hand in its mouth). It is an ancient Roman artificact, which might have been used as a drain cover. 2. The statue looks a lot like the "Manneken Pis" (english "little peeing man"), which is located in Brussels and is one of the cities most famous landmarks. It is not nearly like the other one, being only about 500 years old. Furthermore also isn't made of stone in real life, but cast from bronze. Funnily enough they dress it up in different clothes on a regular basis.
this show has so many animators and art styles that it feels like a monster. Which works very well with the theme. Congrats on the videos, they were very informative and interesting to watch.
Culture moment : the statue peeing on Laios is the "Manneken Pis", one of the famous monuments from the city of Brussel, in Belgium 🇧🇪. I can't believe I got to see a reference to my country 's culture in an anime !
I just found this channel yesterday and now having watched every video I think I can safely say I am a big fan and look forward to future content! This dungeon meshi content has been especially interesting because it’s not that common to get such a wonderful breakdown of specifically the animation episode by episode, especially appreciate the focus on the individual animators given how much each specific one can truly influence the result. It’s also nice to find stuff with both knowledge and such good humor
listening to you "yapping" on and on about this amazing show was so much fun! I can only hope we get more shows like this, that are determined to really let the viewer breathe in the world around the characters. I love when a fantasy world takes its themes and characters seriously.
2:02 I think the reason Dwarf-Laios doesn't have a beard is because as a tall-man he shaves his facial hair so his face looks smooth (we see this very early in the series) if he didn't shave he would look quite scruffy as we see in some flashback this episode, so my guess is, shaving transferred when he became a dwarf
Watching these videos every week became part of the Dungeon Meshi Experience. I found myself eagerly waiting for the next one after each episode to see what you, and all the commenters, noticed and remark on. Thank you for making all of these!
i have loved this series, it's been so cool to learn about the animators, the animation techniques, and the reasons behind why animators use the techniques they do. i've started to be able to recognize when different animators show up even in other anime thanks to this series. swamp jawn is super knowledgeable and really good at condensing a lot of information into something digestible (pun intended). looking forward to future videos as well as dungeon meshi season 2!
thanks for the weekly animation breakdowns, they were very enriching and I was always excited to see them. I had a hard time finding something to comment on that wouldn't be "thanks, that's very informative!", but now I realize I should've done at least that. It's the least you deserve for looking so closely at the craft and sharing with us! that being said, I do think the angel statue was implied to be moving closer to Laios in that panel, with the round action lines around it. It was indeed a spiteful little fella!
Thanks for covering this entire show 😅 none of my friends are interested in this show and say it's "okay" 😒 if they just paid attention to the details you can see the amount of love this show has. It may not be constant action packed all the time, but it has a balance in story telling that really is well orchestrated 🙏
Man, I've been looking forward to your weekly reviews just as much as much as the actual episodes. You did an amazing job and i hope you have nice well-deserved break
These weekly episode breakdowns have been very quality bonding time for me and my girlfriend as we watch your videos together every week, and as an animator I have found your in-depth analyses incredibly fascinating and inspiring. Not lying when I say half of my hype for the next season is getting more analysis content from you (and that goes for both of us!). Please keep doing what you do!
Definitely prioritize not burning out, but if you do choose to do breakdowns of each episode in S2 when it drops, do it at a slower pace than the episode release schedule! I know I'll be here in a heartbeat gobbling up every second of your breakdowns that make me appreciate the series EVEN more ❤️ These videos have been an absolute highlight and I'll be rewatching them just as much as the show itself while we wait for S2 🥰
It's gonna be tough not having your abalysis videos go look forward to each week, but I'm grateful for all you did for this first season and for the continuation whenever we get season two. As ever, I'm so glad to see what you had to add to this episode, especially the reference to the "real life" creature Falin becomes in Laios' imagination. A close second was the medicine ball sound effects during Marcille's chaotic bouncing around during the gargoyle fight.
thank you for doing this series 🥲 i love dunmeshi and your videos really help me appreciate the efforts of the animators on a deeper level. i can’t wait for season 2 to release!
I’d love to see a spoiler free recap / review I can show my friends to convince them to watch Dungeon Meshi. These reviews really gave me a deeper appreciation for the effort and thought that went into this anime.
Wonderful analysis, I love picking out details I didn't see on my first viewing and your explanations have made me love the work even more. I rarely like Japanese anime, and I thought I'd never find one that met my need for realism, whether in terms of the characters or the environment. In fact, this might be the very first piece of media to do it so properly and so consistently... Thank you
this is the first video of yours ive seen but its really allowed for me to have a deeper understanding and appreciation for the story and the people who make it, so im gonna watch the rest when i have time later because this was amazing, thank you
I will definitely give your other videos a try! You gave me so much insight into how animations are made and how complex and deliberate it is all while keeping it super entertaining. Keep it up :)
I feel that, since Laios shaves it regularly he didn’t have a beard, but since Half foots don’t grow facial hair at all, they never shave, so that translates to Chilchuk having some
Trigger did an amazing job adapting this series so far, having episodes of both this and Frieren in the same week and then Mushoku Tensei had me spoiled as a fantasy/adventure fan.
Thanks for making these videos, it's made watching this series considerably better. As someone who appreciates animation but doesn't actually know all that much about it, I've had a wonderful time revisiting the scenes that popped out to me and hearing a little about what made them click. Hope you can continue with it when season 2 comes out.
I'd love to see you continue doing the weekly episode breakdowns as they've been a really good way for me to sit on and absorb what happened in the most recent episode. Especially considering you are very diligent in avoiding spoilers from the manga as you compare it to the show. thank you for your work so far ❤
I honestly think its because Liaos shaves every night, whereas Chilchuk never shaves, so Liaos becomes a shaven dwarf and Chilchuk becomes a five-o-clock shadow man
This was a first for me. First in enjoying and appreciating the fruits of labor with every episode and then have the insane effort and attention to detail among lots of animation tidbits with which I'm not to familiar pointed out by your weekly breakdowns. It made this season of Dungeon Meshi a unique and special experience for me (having a great adaption from and even greater source material is of course almost an instand win). Thank you for sticking with this series as well and show us the love and care the folks at Trigger put into the adaptation. Cheers to the season 2 and hopefully you'll do some videos on that again - or in the meantime. Now excuse me, I'm off to binge read the manga... 😅
I _cannot_ wait for season 2. this anime is _amazing_ thank you for making these videos. it's been great to learn so much more than I would have otherwise known about the animation and team behind it
Your series has been so fun! I learned a lot and gained an appreciation for all of the different artists and creators who worked on the show. It was really cool to have an answer to "why do they suddenly look different?!" and instead of being grumpy and confused I go "ah it's Kai ikarashi at it again." We always pull up your analysis to watch during dinner. Hope to see you again for season 2!
Met you through Dungeon Meshi, subscribed now, I'll be interested to see what else you talk about! I really appreciated this look at details I don't have an eye for, helps me appreciate the animation in a whole new way!
That trolly scene felt like something straight out of a classic Final Fantasy to me. The scene of Laios looking out of the window with those orbs of light is picture frame worthy. Also, after just watching Hell's Paradise, sick burn towards MAPPA! LOL XD
wow! i just wanted to say how much i appreciate your episode breakdowns!. I've so enjoyed watching your videos and am now following you un tumblr as well c:
Thank you for all your insights and analysis on the series! I look forward to season 2 coverage and whatever other projects you have on hand. In the meanwhile, rest well! You have certainly earned it, as well as earning a viewer out of me 😄
Thanks for this breakdown series, dude! It's been fun as hell taking this series in as a supplement to the episode, and your insights into what goes into the animation has really elevated my appreciation for the series as a whole. Seeing how you break animation down every week has made me become a bit more studious about what I'm watching too, so the interest is very infectious! Your frequent comparisons to the manga were always much appreciated too as good reminders to check the source material and see in what ways the anime elevated it! Hope your break goes well, making a weekly series is absolutely daunting, but you've worked super hard finding the best cuts to break down and conveyed it all in an easy to understand way! Whatever you do next, I'll be supporting as an avid watcher! 👍
What a wonderful little show, can't wait for the next season. You should do more of these dude, it's very very very high quality content that adds up to our enjoyment of anime.
Jawn I am so freaking thankful you made these analyses, I hope you continue to do so, but understand if you don't make an analysis for every episoof season 2. Just wanted to say thanks for pointing out the details and teaching me so much ❤
As a huge Dunmeshi fan since before the anime even dropped, I genuinely CAN'T wait for season 2 to come. It's so balls to the wall conceptually INSANE and things happen there that I couldn't possibly predict when I was reading the manga for the first time. It also becomes so much more obvious regarding the central theme of Dunmeshi and how every single bit of the story, even all the silly cooking adventures they had at the start, is part of this theme.
Im really happy you made this series, it was always a joy to watch. I hope you'll be able to continue it with the start of the next season and thank you :). From the stuff ive noticed in this episode, they really toned down laios's 5 o'clock shadow in the flashbacks which was kinda sad but oh well
Your videos have been an important part of my weekly watch of the series after I found your channel through tumblr, can't wait to see what you cook up going forward!
The eyes in that image of of long haired Laios with scruff always stares into the depths of my heart and soul. Everytime I see it I just have to stop and stare.
These were so fun and they taught me a lot! Both about animation in general and about specific Trigger animators. I started to be able to recognize styles when I revisited Kill la Kill, which was cool. Thank you for these and I look forward to seeing you in season 2!
In the latest radio show of DM, director Miyajima reveals that he has been a fan of DM since the start of manga 10 years ago. And the tendency to follow manga panel closely is also kinda personal per conversation(s) he had with Kui during production went like this: Kui: *points at certain scenes* Wouldn't adjusting this works better animation-wise? Miyajima: No. your manga is like a bible to us fans, I wouldn't dare to put so much personal interpretation into it. Kui: ...Dude, chill out
Your video is so good! I haven’t even watched Dungeon Meshi yet, but you episode dissections are just so interesting! The attention to detail: drawing of the animation lines, the way you describe the dialogue clearly, the crediting of animators, just shows how much research and effort you put into each video! I can feel the love you have for this series and how much effort is put into each video through the sheer level of detailing. Should I watch Dungeon Meshi now? 😅

It is not nearly like the other one, being only about 500 years old. Furthermore also isn't made of stone in real life, but cast from bronze. Funnily enough they dress it up in different clothes on a regular basis.
It's actually good consistency to not have the scar on his leg because in the anime, Falin completely healed his leg which got rid of the scars
Oh yeah!
The week wasn’t complete without your video afterwards
I look forward to more of your yappin’ during season 2
SEASON 2 YOU MUST TO DO THE WEEKLY LIKE PLEASE THIS CONTENT IS SO GOOD LIKE ACTUALLY WE WILL SUPPORT YOU 100%
this show has so many animators and art styles that it feels like a monster. Which works very well with the theme. Congrats on the videos, they were very informative and interesting to watch.
I loved this series, and I also loved watching dungeon meshi. It gave structure to me for a couple months, which was fantastic! Have a great day!
This video series was a treat to watch, week after week, thank you so much for them and all the work that went into it, it's been lovely!
Thanks so much for creating this series! Your insightful commentary became an important part of enjoying the show for me
Culture moment : the statue peeing on Laios is the "Manneken Pis", one of the famous monuments from the city of Brussel, in Belgium 🇧🇪. I can't believe I got to see a reference to my country 's culture in an anime !
Oh cool!
Haha fair enough. Thanks!
Huge thank you for the videos, without you I wouldn't have been so appreciative of the work put into this anime
Definitely prioritize not burning out, but if you do choose to do breakdowns of each episode in S2 when it drops, do it at a slower pace than the episode release schedule! I know I'll be here in a heartbeat gobbling up every second of your breakdowns that make me appreciate the series EVEN more ❤️ These videos have been an absolute highlight and I'll be rewatching them just as much as the show itself while we wait for S2 🥰
i just want to say thank you for doing all of these videos. It has made me really appreciate animation more and the series more.
The train at the end is a particular articular funicular. It's vehicular!
A close second was the medicine ball sound effects during Marcille's chaotic bouncing around during the gargoyle fight.
it cant be...after no more dunmeshi thursday...no more swampy jawn weekly dunmeshi breakdown...
I dont comment much but thank you for this series, i look forward to each one after a new episode comes out. Cant wait for season 2 :))
Its been such a pleasure to watch these videos after every Dungeon Meshi episode! Please take a break after all the work you put into this series.
thank you for doing this series 🥲 i love dunmeshi and your videos really help me appreciate the efforts of the animators on a deeper level. i can’t wait for season 2 to release!
Thank you
Thank you for your wonderful videos every week, they have been a core part of the Dungeon Meshi experience for me
this is the first video of yours ive seen but its really allowed for me to have a deeper understanding and appreciation for the story and the people who make it, so im gonna watch the rest when i have time later because this was amazing, thank you
I will definitely give your other videos a try! You gave me so much insight into how animations are made and how complex and deliberate it is all while keeping it super entertaining. Keep it up :)
I feel that, since Laios shaves it regularly he didn’t have a beard, but since Half foots don’t grow facial hair at all, they never shave, so that translates to Chilchuk having some
Oh this is such a great video, time to watch all the rest of them and subscribe!
Trigger did an amazing job adapting this series so far, having episodes of both this and Frieren in the same week and then Mushoku Tensei had me spoiled as a fantasy/adventure fan.
This entire series of Breakdowns feels like a love letter to the team that makes Dungeon Meshi. Bravo! Amazing job @SwampJawn!
~Sincerely; Grav G
Thanks for making these videos, it's made watching this series considerably better. As someone who appreciates animation but doesn't actually know all that much about it, I've had a wonderful time revisiting the scenes that popped out to me and hearing a little about what made them click. Hope you can continue with it when season 2 comes out.
I'd love to see you continue doing the weekly episode breakdowns as they've been a really good way for me to sit on and absorb what happened in the most recent episode. Especially considering you are very diligent in avoiding spoilers from the manga as you compare it to the show. thank you for your work so far ❤
Great review. I love how you show the shots in slow motion and discuss how the strength of different artists has been implemented.
I SCREAMED WHEN I SAW THE VIDEO IN MY FEED (I love this series so much)
I honestly think its because Liaos shaves every night, whereas Chilchuk never shaves, so Liaos becomes a shaven dwarf and Chilchuk becomes a five-o-clock shadow man
This was a first for me.
I _cannot_ wait for season 2. this anime is _amazing_
thank you for making these videos. it's been great to learn so much more than I would have otherwise known about the animation and team behind it
Your series has been so fun!
I sure hope you keep doing this once season 2 happens! I always came back and watched right after I watched an episode.
Met you through Dungeon Meshi, subscribed now, I'll be interested to see what else you talk about! I really appreciated this look at details I don't have an eye for, helps me appreciate the animation in a whole new way!
Swamp Jawn... BRING IT BACK! I need it when it comes back!
You have certainly earned it, as well as earning a viewer out of me 😄
i'm going to miss these breakdowns nearly as much as the show itself - thank you so much for sharing them with us!
My nasty Gullet is excited for further little bits of your inspection of the series
Thank you so much for covering this series, easily my favorite youtuber who covered it.
Absolutely love your commentary and humor! It’s perfect for this show
Im really happy you made this series, it was always a joy to watch. I hope you'll be able to continue it with the start of the next season and thank you :). From the stuff ive noticed in this episode, they really toned down laios's 5 o'clock shadow in the flashbacks which was kinda sad but oh well
Your videos were like 2nd Dungeon Meshi event I was looking fovard on a weekly basis. Ihanks for making these!
Your videos have been an important part of my weekly watch of the series after I found your channel through tumblr, can't wait to see what you cook up going forward!
Guy, this is a animation class, its is amazing, please keep doing videos like this!
And the tendency to follow manga panel closely is also kinda personal per conversation(s) he had with Kui during production went like this:
Kui: *points at certain scenes* Wouldn't adjusting this works better animation-wise?
Oh oh btw, have a good break!! U deserve it ❤🎉
I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel. I love Dungeon Meshi and after each episode I kept looking forward to watching your videos about the show, which were all very interesting and well made. So thank you ❤ I can't wait for season 2 and to see more from you
