I love the use of lighting color theory choices in here. It really does scream of an extreme movie buff. Red lighting has been used for violence, death, and danger since it could be, but in the 70s film really leaned into it for the horror genre. Hitchcock was huge with red. Some French directors created masterpieces. Even guillermo del toro cited these older movies using red lighting in Crimson Peak to foreshadow ghost and danger activity. So when we are using ghosts, we get red. Aliens have always gotten blue with the connections to futuristic and advanced civilizations getting blue lighting. The super, high contrast when the two overlap is staggeringly compelling. I know there's a bunch of connections to red with spirits in Japan. Just look at the shrines, but I'd love to know what inspired it for Yamashiro with in films and shows. I would totally watch them.

Really enjoyed this video! I've been watching Dandadan and keep finding myself without the technical vocabulary to explain why so many of the scenes work so well. I feel like you put everything I feel into words.
thanks for a great analysis of the film techniques and use of colour. Along with simple line work, the I'm kinda enjoying how inconsistent the art has been throughout each episode, it gives the characters an organic feel.
13:44 Ohhhhh, so that's why... I was wondering why they were 'hiding' Okarun in that scene, it made me frustrated because I wanted to see his entire self, not just him in the corner...
I've missed the amount of details and research you bring on each video. For someone foreign to the industry, it really helps having these bits of context and anecdotes sprinkled here and there... Also I missed Dungeon Meshi 😅 Keep up the good work!
I was hoping you'd analyze DanDaDan! I recalled your Dungeon Meshi videos a few times watching it and wondered what you'd say about some scenes. Keep it coming!
I'm glad you kept on making videos, they're so good. Hopefully there's an anime this season that captivates you as Dungeon Meshi did so we get a buncha videos :P
This is such a great review of Dandadan! I’ve seen a few but non of them cover things like usage of camera angles, colour and the creator’s and their influences that make this anime so good.
Really looking forward for u to break down the rest of the episodes! There is just so much to unpack in every scene and its so interesting to see the comparison to the manga
Loved this breakdown. Gives me even more respect for the artists behind this. I've been a big fan of anything coming out of science Saru and I'm so exited to be able work with Yuasa himself on an [undisclosed] project. 😛
I just want to point out that one of the coolest choices between the manga and the anime was the choice in the anime for the alien space ship to actually be the moon floating behind the abandoned hospital.
I wasn't sure about the show because of the same concerns you pointed out from the first episode, but that changing scene with Okarun framed in the mirror was so beautifully done and communicated the story it was telling so effectively, I got over it and have stuck with it so far. (And I've been rewarded with more great animation and really well-written character dynamics so far.)

I'm reminded a bit of Dungeon Meshi but the adaptation this reminds me the most of is actually Bones's adaptation of Mob Psycho 100 in the sense that it trades in some of what makes the manga art unique and interesting but in exchange you get an adaptation filled with choices in framing and animation and techniques that feel for the most part completely correct for the story and what it needs. The Dandadan anime also knows what needs work and what can be left as it is. I actually think the weakest parts of the Dandadan manga is it's action sequences. Tatsu's art is always well drawn (and his splash pages are fantastic) but the composition can sometimes leave scenes confused or not as fleshed out as they could be. Episodes 1 and 4 I would call the most improved episodes of the anime because of how they add to the action in a way that feels like they should have always been there. That kind of leads into favorite changes and additions which to me is probably all the changes in episode 1 that I really adore from the first person turbo granny shot and Okarun running away, to matching up the two kicks Momo does in the episode (maybe the intent of the manga but the angles and impact are different), to the ship crashing into the side of the hill to what I think is the best shot of the show even still which is the explosion shot of the UFO that ends the episode. It's a shot that's so well animated and also so well placed into the story and emotions of Momo that it's honestly stunning to me that it wasn't in the manga (saying as someone who read the manga first). That's just getting into the new shots and framing and not all the subtle changes animation and color adds to the story. The manga also knows when to pull from Dandadan's direction and framing as seen by the newest episode at the time of writing this comment (episode 5). In contrast to the action I think where Tatsu's art really excels is actually in the quieter and more intimate character moments. The way shots are framed and characters emote like the two leads saying good bye after defeating Turbo Granny or thinking about how much they want to talk to each other after class are the panels and monents that I think takes Dandadan from good to great. While episode 5 of the anime feels like the manga in motion I think it was still a big success in adaptation that it kept what made those chapters great to me. Had a lot to say whoops.
It blows my mind that people naturally think of things like "have the mask shift more towards blue and then back towards red based on his emotional state."
Dolly zoom, or as I first noticed the technique, the Event Horizon shot :p it was the first film technique I ever went out and learned on my own. I love it SO much :)
Honestly, i just watched the first six episodes of Dan Da Dan, and I think there's even more you could say in terms of color and 'opposite worlds': that is to say, the cooler tones and warmer tones are not only for their respective genres, but for what the creator seems to think are the feelings and themes encapsulated by these 'two worlds' and their contrasts: - Firstly, *the warmer tones (the "Yokai" world) have a focus on the personal,* the internal, the messiness of human interaction and community. these things _can_ fester into those things brutal, animalistic, destructive, and hateful, but these are also the colors of emotional support, domesticity, protective instincts, and love. it's all those things up close, individual, one-on-one, and what things feel like almost in a 'snapshot of a moment' kind of way (as you mentioned with Momo's flashback). It's Okarun's personal, one-on-one connection with Momo that allows him to overcome the influence of the Serpoians and use Turbo-Granny's bright red speed and strength to try to save Momo from the assault attempt. It's why Turbo's Granny influence is shown in further episode through his facial expressions - In comparison, there are *the cooler tones; the "Sci-Fi" world. These are about the impersonal,* the bigger scope picture, those things that make you feel small or unmoored. When taken to their worst extreme, these things _do_ turn into the dehumanizing, the callous, the isolating and controlling, but these also the colors of curiosity, unlimited potential, escape, and the ability to connect with those beyond your personal bubble (like we find out are some of Okarun's big motivations). It's all things you've never experienced, opportunities beyond the horizon, perspectives you've never considered, and a chance for a new tomorrow. It's Momo being open to forming this new friendship that awakens her turquoise psychic potential and allows her and Okarun to actually escape the aliens by the end of episode 1. It's why her powers are shown in further episode to take the shape of hands - quite literally her ability to reach out.
Episode 5 at 4.05 in the windblown curtain mirror reflection starts what I think is a masterpiece in art (all art) that ends when they switch to grannies house the music ,pacing, framing, colours the zoom in and flicker of 1 eyelash right before she drops the washtub on the girls head etc. It’s one of the most inspiring things I’ve seen in a long time ,after watching I sat for a long time wondering what I had just seen . Al the film influences make a lot of sense if you go back to eizouken and the where they say anime is also film . Thanks for the video great to get al the background information!

Really enjoyed this video! I've been watching Dandadan and keep finding myself without the technical vocabulary to explain why so many of the scenes work so well. I feel like you put everything I feel into words.
4:15 the moment he said "like this scene" I got an ad to donate to gazan families
I mean it is cool to do charity
the count down to the name reveal is amazing 🔥🔥
He really is an awkward guy. 10/10
3:37 how did you say that much within a minute and 50
SWAMP JAWN DANDADAN VIDEO ‼️‼️‼️
letssss gooooooooooooooo
GOOD SWAMP UNDER VIDEO
(Translated by Google)
thanks for a great analysis of the film techniques and use of colour.
Keep it coming!
aw fuck YEAH, it's time for some SWAMP JAWN, love your work
Yes I was hoping you’d talk about DanDaDan! I’d love to see you do episode breakdowns of it like you did on Dungeon Meshi
This is my second watched video in the channel, and it already is one of my favourite pop culture analysis channels EVER!
glad to see you also recognise the ultraman references in the series
You were exceptionally funny in this one, got me really good
bro you deserve more subs wtf this is fire
Holy shit i read the manga but now i GOTTA watch the anime
Yes yes yes, it's good and loyal to the manga.
Yes
The comp and style of this show is so freaking good
Really looking forward for u to break down the rest of the episodes! There is just so much to unpack in every scene and its so interesting to see the comparison to the manga
When I saw that dolly zoom in episode 2.. ooh boy. Oh man. Absolute C I N E M A
Loved this breakdown. Gives me even more respect for the artists behind this. I've been a big fan of anything coming out of science Saru and I'm so exited to be able work with Yuasa himself on an [undisclosed] project. 😛
He is making it up; his process was to not plan so much after several failures that he put a lot of planning into.
I still can't brain how they managed to make a peak of a manga to reach the next level of peak with the anime.
HOW do you only have 24k subs!!! This is some of the best, funniest, most well-researched analysis of any medium I've seen on youtube!
dude.. honestly, aside from the comedy part of your vid here... solid description and background of this anime. well done bro 👌👌👌👌
I just want to point out that one of the coolest choices between the manga and the anime was the choice in the anime for the alien space ship to actually be the moon floating behind the abandoned hospital.
10:00 Yes!!! Finally someone noticed! Mizusaki really does look like Ayase Momo! Glad to hear that :)!! :D
I wasn't sure about the show because of the same concerns you pointed out from the first episode, but that changing scene with Okarun framed in the mirror was so beautifully done and communicated the story it was telling so effectively, I got over it and have stuck with it so far. (And I've been rewarded with more great animation and really well-written character dynamics so far.)
giving up a show that does weird shit like that is a sign that you’re trying to avoid thinking about something you’re attracted to
@oldylad Or I just want to avoid media produced by someone who gets off on it. Or I just don't like it. You really can't make that kind of judgment about a person.
Ping Pong mention :) Thank you for continuing to talk about animation in an interesting and enlightening way.
I caught up to the manga in like a week or too, it only gets better and crazier
Please do more of this! I suppose you don't want to do weekly episodes again, though it was a great companion to Dungeon Meshi that I anticipated every week.
I'm glad I enjoy deeper dives into things I enjoy. It broadens my appreciation for the whole, not just the product at the end.
Bro you are hilarious, didn't think I'd have this amount of fun watching a video appreciating Dandadan's director.
"Give us your, animation breakdown. Please."
It feels weirdly scientific like collecting data on optimal storytelling and what not and the way the references are used
I love how you breakdown animation and cinematography. I always learn something watching your videos.
Great work! Ain’t nobody doing it like you do😆
In the interview, the director said he went through 100s of drafts of frames for each scene. He really put his soul into this
One thing I took away from that interview was the phrase "no wasted frames"
Quite literally "cinema".
the song in the back ground is what i hear in my head when i have a migraine at 2 am on a Tuesday
youre not gona believe this but its 2:45 am on a tuesday for me and i had the most fucked up migraine that i just recovered from and i can confirm this is the song i heard. this is creepy af
This show has some of the nicest looking backgrounds I've seen in a while. I'm always pausing to appreciate them.
Found this channel from the Dungeon Meshi animation breakdowns, and was REALLY hoping you'd cover Dandadan. Wishes do come true sometimes.
Sharing this on socials. This is how I felt about the anime.
your analyses are always sooo interesting and i genuinely learn something new every time. thank u i loved this
0:58 Especially this! I really wish Aiyase was given more respect. I did not need to see her mound every 5 frames. ❌️
"Too much bussy stop 😭😭😭 it's immoral I can't handle it 😭"
@necro-claud6370 Let me see your history, fr. Don't worry, I just want to see what you've got in there. 😇
@@KingDeadMan ok, I can send a list like message. And what will you say after? "You are immoral thus your opinion is invalid"? Or if you won't find anything, will you say "Your opinion is invalid, because..." Because what?
I don't see a thesis coming, broda.
@@necro-claud6370 Oh, dear. I won't criticise you, that isn't my job. S.W.A.T. being outside your home, depends on what we find in your history. CP, SA, Stalking, perverse public actions, the works, etc... I don't judge, I merely alert the authorities of suspicious activities.

Ok, good luck, I won't get anything from this polemic
SWAMP JAWN IS BACK BABY🗣🔥💯
RUclips Analytics will show that the like button was hit within 5 seconds of 3:15 for 97% of viewers.
4:18 “like this scene” (immediate cut to an old spice ad) 😂😂
Yo, I've been following Swamp Jawn since before he had 2k subs and seeing literally my favorite anime commentary and analysis channel grow like this makes me chubby in my pants. This isn't a Dan Da Dan reference. I'm just an awkward guy..
Great video!!! i really love your longer format
The best analysis of Dan Da Dan I’ve seen. Very good work!
Its so ridiculously good. I haven't enjoyed a new anime this much in a loooong time
YES I HOPED YOU'D DO A VID ON IT!! Are you gonna do an animation recap of every episode or just the one ? Either way this is so cool!
It blows my mind that people naturally think of things like "have the mask shift more towards blue and then back towards red based on his emotional state."
An excellent video for sure!
This video makes me love the show more. Thank you!
Dolly zoom, or as I first noticed the technique, the Event Horizon shot :p it was the first film technique I ever went out and learned on my own. I love it SO much :)
I did not the first aliens were 3D in places!!! That's so cool and I would love to notice thay more as well! The 3D is so good!
Honestly, i just watched the first six episodes of Dan Da Dan, and I think there's even more you could say in terms of color and 'opposite worlds': that is to say, the cooler tones and warmer tones are not only for their respective genres, but for what the creator seems to think are the feelings and themes encapsulated by these 'two worlds' and their contrasts:
- Firstly, *the warmer tones (the "Yokai" world) have a focus on the personal,* the internal, the messiness of human interaction and community. these things _can_ fester into those things brutal, animalistic, destructive, and hateful, but these are also the colors of emotional support, domesticity, protective instincts, and love. it's all those things up close, individual, one-on-one, and what things feel like almost in a 'snapshot of a moment' kind of way (as you mentioned with Momo's flashback). It's Okarun's personal, one-on-one connection with Momo that allows him to overcome the influence of the Serpoians and use Turbo-Granny's bright red speed and strength to try to save Momo from the assault attempt. It's why Turbo's Granny influence is shown in further episode through his facial expressions
- In comparison, there are *the cooler tones; the "Sci-Fi" world.
9:12 YEESSS DOFLAMINGO WALK 🔥🔥🔥😍
And Kuma just walking behind them*
Episode 5 at 4.05 in the windblown curtain mirror reflection starts what I think is a masterpiece in art (all art) that ends when they switch to grannies house the music ,pacing, framing, colours the zoom in and flicker of 1 eyelash right before she drops the washtub on the girls head etc. It’s one of the most inspiring things I’ve seen in a long time ,after watching I sat for a long time wondering what I had just seen . Al the film influences make a lot of sense if you go back to eizouken and the where they say anime is also film .
Thanks for the video great to get al the background information!
If only dorohedoro s2 is released within the year, my soul would leap in joy.
Dandadan reminds me of a quote from Nora Night in Warframe. “Style, baby. It’s about knowing who you are and not giving a damn.”
15:31 biggest jumpscare
2:47 those aliens were so scary!!
