    It’s weird to think that you can draw so many comparisons of how drivers responded to the halo when it became mandatory to when the hans device was first becoming more and more needed in the late 90s early 2000 with the amount of concerns being brought up by the speed of cars in many series. Dale Earnhardt called it a damn noose.

      Common misconception. He was against close-faced helmets mainly, but made his son wear a HANS device.

    Honestly think that anyone who complains about tge Halo or Aeroscreen should be MADE to watch this. They're an indispensable piece of equipment when it xomes to open wheeled racing, the amount of fatalities or horrific injuries stopped by them already is amazing. Fantastic video detailing this. RIP to all those who were taken too soon

      Honestly, I think that even if the HALO was a thing back then, Price wouldn't survive. I know it's supposed to protect your head from debris, but the extinguisher was such a heavy object, and at the speed that Price was going, it's hard to say if the HALO would've even stopped it.

    The halo would not have saved Dan wheldon, not at the speed he crashed at and the way the car hit the catch fence. That was a awful day ! His crash and the way it went cockpit first into the wall kind of reminds me of Gordon Smiley's crash at Indy !

      I’m guessing the aero screen wouldn’t have saved him either?

    • @noggin6870
      @noggin6870 2 месяца назад +1

      It's really hard to say. No, the aeroscreen would not hold up to an impact as strong as the one Dan took with his head, but you have to remember that the aeroscreen wouldn't be impacting it at the same angle. It's a much smaller incidental angle, and the aeroscreen might be able to survive that. Plus, even if the aeroscreen breaks, that would still deflect the car, it wouldn't just continue as if the aeroscreen wasn't there at all. It's a hard one to judge.

    Not so sure the halo would’ve saved Wheldon. It would’ve totally saved Justin Wilson and Surtees’ lives. But with the absolute force that cockpit of Wheldon’s car took? I don’t think so.

    I felt the halo & aeroscreen finally made the cars look complete. Before, the modern F1/Indy car had a beautiful aerodynamic body line, but interrupted by a big notch cut out in the middle for the driver. I swear I thought I once read some halo-haters complaining you couldn't see the driver's head anymore (maybe they were sarcastic?) -- as if GT and LeMans racing isn't as classy because they have windows. I'm just liking the aesthetics of a driver's screen. If you saw someone flying a small airplane without a cockpit, it was for the primitive vintage look of the old days, just like the old race cars in the 40s where you sat way up, like in a kart. Fine, but shouldn't a proper 21st century race car costing millions look the part.
    I actually agree with halo-hater dude below saying it's OK for racing to be dangerous, but then we shouldn't have safety restraints or soft walls either. Which I'm totally OK with -- in fact I think racing should go back to being very dangerous so that drivers have respect for real-life physics again. If you prefer safety, though, you have to go all the way and protect the driver's head, of all things, if you're already protecting the rest of the anatomy from fires and such.

    The only complaint I ever had about the HALO was that, to me, I thought it might obstruct the driver's view. I liked the idea of the aeroscreen more.
    Either way, the fact people were complaining because it "looked ugly" were buffoons.

    Danger is part of the sport. Always has been, always should be. It is wat sets driveres apart from other mere mortals that they are willing to put themselves through this constantly. You shouldn't be at risk at every single turn of the steering wheel but this thing has ruined the very term open-cockpit-racing. It looks god awful and made F1 cars hideous since 2018. One of the worst "inventions" ever.
