Best Way of Kings quote ever 😌

@@rukhtalos8587 yup!!!
Why is that such a good quote
@@Randomatcrazytown Sanderson's caught another one for us Cosmere boys. Reel'em in!
The reason we’re so willing to lend out copies is because we all unashamedly own 4 copies of each book.
Having just bought another paperback copy of Elantris, Way of Kings and Mistborn to loan to someone...I feel very seen by this comment.
I’ve only just joined r/fantasy but it seems like Cosmere, Wheel of Time, and Discworld are the holy trinity of that subreddit
And Malazan, First Law, and Realm of the Elderlings. They get recommend over and over again 😂
@@GPTWisdomNugets And as someone who genuinely loves Malazan, its crazy just how much it gets recommended. I could gush about Malazan for days, but my God is it not the everyone and unless I’ve got a really good handle on the persons taste there are at least a dozen series I’d recommend before shoving Gardens of the Moon at them.
@@Hydralysk445 okay, so I guess you're the person to ask if I'm too lazy to go all the way to Reddit. You seem knowledgable on this topic. I'm on my second attempt at reading Gardens of the Moon, I'm at chapter 3 (which is also the point I stopped last time, but it feels like it's so much longer...) and I just... don't care about any of the characters... which makes it hard to care what happens... is this maybe just not a character driven story, but has other virtues going for it instead? Or will the characters get interesting eventually, and I should just tough it out?
@@animalobsessed1 I consider myself a character focused reader and I ended up loving Malazan, but I can see how that might not be true for many other people who describe themselves the same way. Malazan just has SO MANY characters, to the point where you're often switching between a dozen or more PoVs in each individual chapter. Its not like most other fantasy I'd read before it that sticks to a handful of core characters and focuses on really fleshing them out throughout the series. You have a massive amount of mostly just normal-ass people trying to fumble their way through world-altering events way beyond their control or comprehension. I did end up really falling in love with a bunch of them, but that was over the course of a series, and especially at the beginning you have next to no context as to who these people are and why you should care about them.
On that note, another hurdle is that Erikson specifically wrote Gardens of the Moon with next to no exposition, so you're left trying to piece details of the world and characters together almost entirely through context given in those PoVs. I finished GotM with maybe a handle on 50-60% of what happened, but one of the reasons I stuck with it during my second run through was by following the advice to try and just roll with the story and simply trust that you'll figure it out later. Having read the whole series, I can say that GotM makes a whole lot more sense now, but the first time through I just focused on enjoying the process of fitting together all the pieces of the puzzle of what's going on. That's obviously not going to be something that appeals to everyone.
The series also has a really strong thematic throughline about how small we all are in the grand scheme of things, and therefore the importance showing compassion and empathy towards even (and perhaps especially) those who might not 'deserve' it that I personally really jive with. Though I've heard others complain that this leads to "Everyone being a philosopher", so YMMV.
Since this is already getting a bit too long, here's a video that goes over some common hurdles to getting into Malazan that might help you a bit more than I can: ruclips.net/video/UypBcloUly4/видео.html
It took until midway through the second book to really hook me, and I know a lot of other people say that you should get through the first 3 before deciding if the series for you. That's a big ask though, as these are big, chonky books. I'd urge you to give it the ol' college try and at least push through GotM if you're interested, but like I said, it's not for everyone. Life's short and you should focus on reading books you find enjoyable or otherwise meaningful, not on what random snobs or reddit posters say you SHOULD be reading.
@@Hydralysk445 thanks, this actually sounds like it would me my type of story. I just need to push through and actually get to that part.
Warbreaker is free, that wasn't a joke! Didn't know this. Free stuff is the best place to start.

That's what I was thinking
Set in the real world with fantasy elements = percy jackson. There really should more books like thhat since its a pretty interesting premise. Dr Stone also does it really well so i recommend that too
I started reading Mistborn yesterday because of the hilarious videos on booktube... I wanted context, and I guess now I'm doomed to read them all to keep up with the discussion (and parodies)....
I hope I don't start popping out of people's closets. How common is that side effect?
Hahahahahaha! Yeah, it's exhausting. I'm sort of glad I got out after the first Stormlight book. I loved it. But then it took forever for Book 2 to come out. (At least, in paperback or in the library, since I'm broke and can't afford to get books when they first come out as hardcovers.) By that time, I had forgotten a lot of Book 1. Also, I did not realize it was going to be a series of 34723748163486274637 books! I'm not going to get invested in a series that's not complete yet. I am not a GoT fan. But I've seen what they've been through and continue to go through. I don't want to end up that way.
Mr. Sanderson, please let me know when the series is complete and I will be happy to give it another shot. I really do hate missing out.
Sir but have you read Mistborn?
@Yesica1993 that depends if you want to read a series that's complete, or read when the Cosmere is finished.
If it's the former, I suggest reading Mistborn Era 1 and Era 2, since those are currently finished. Also, Tress of the Emerald Sea, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and The Sunlit Man are all individual books (though some parts may spoil other parts of the Cosmere). Also, Stormlight Archive is getting it's last book (for this arc) this December, so you might want to start it now so you're caught up when it releases!
If you want to read when the Cosmere is finished, no worries! Don't ever read it because Brandon is literally going to be writing it for the rest of his life! Seriously! He already has book release plans up to 2030.
I wouldnt worry about missing out the ending, Sanderson WILL finish these stories. Also there's easy break points in each series you can pause at, eg each Mistborn eras, once Stormlight 5 is out thats an easy break point too.
The books are great, you should read them. Start with Warbreaker
@@mikelawrence30 We can't guarantee that. Things sometimes happen. And people can also die. You never know.
@Yesica1993 my overarching point was to not miss out on the books because of the fear that they don't get "finished". There's been finishes to most of the stories/series we have, with perfectly good/ great conclusions.
Mistborn era 1 for example can happily be read as a stand alone trilogy. Once Stormlight 5 is out this year, that should also stand alone as its own series without any need to read the other books.
I'd say there's probably only 2 Cosmere books where knowledge of other series is needed to help you along, and they're two of the most recent offerings.
I am beyond disappointed the r/cremposting Warbreaker reading order wasn't mentioned
I've read the Stormlight Archive, but only it. I was thinking about getting Warbreaker, and I had no idea I could read it for free on Brandon's site. Interesting.
If you like these videos, I recommend reading Mistborn
Great men be damned, I LOVE the cinematography in this vid! Like, holy shit, did ya get creative with some o’ those shots!
By the way, if ya want a fantasy series that’s just as fun (but only a 17th of the length), you should check out “Pirate Captain Tharkia” by Ethan S. Carroll. It’s a sword-&-sorcery/pirate yarn set in a surprisingly filled-out world; I think you’d like it.
The Cosmere is great if you love hard magic systems, complex worldbuilding, well done plot twists and slow but steady character development. It's also made of several different series but you don't need to read every single series to enjoy any one of them. There, have some actual advice.
The blinding effect after turning on the light was a nice touch.
1:24, Arguably The Once and Future King though not nearly to the same extent as Le Morte d’Arthur (though I’m not sure if it would qualify by your standard.)

this is painfully accurate
3:33 having grown up reading Warrior Cats (a series that, last time I read any of it, had more than 40 books), 17 books feels like a really doable series. 😅
A google search says warrior cats (39 books? A bit confusing) is 1,248,000 words
Stormlight Archives, on it's own, is 1,792,008 words. With a 460k word book releasing this december. It's less books sure but they are considerably bigger :p
@@Ouryuu-Zenokun I think you might’ve gotten an outdated source. I just counted mine, and I’ve got 37 of them, and know I’m missing like 3 arcs (which are each 6 books long) and quite a few standalones and graphic novels. According to the Warriors wiki it’s over 90 now.
That being said, if Stormlight is still somehow longer that’s _awesome_ , since the prices of the Stormlight books aren’t really that much higher than books of a normal length. I’m excited to read them- I’ve already got The Way of Kings Part One, but I’m only a few chapters in.
@@thatonepossum5766 Yeah, I checked a bit and it seems like its outdated. Do you have a good source to pull the numbers from? The only thing I can find is about how the standard books are 70k ish on average and the special editions (focused on one character?) average around 120k?
Anyways, since I can't find the exact numbers, I will just type the stormlight numbers so you guys can compare them on your own:
WoK: 380k
WoR: 400k
ED (novella): 40k
OB: 450k
DS (novella): 56k
RoW: 455K
Book 5: Estimated 460k, maybe more
@@Ouryuu-Zenokun I don’t have a _great_ source for anything more specific than total number of books (and broken down into how many of each kind of book), but I think most of what I’ve seen would put it in the 60k-70k range for the standard novels, with standalones being noticeably longer. Rounding the main books down to 40, that puts the main series at around 2,400,000 words at a low estimate, and not including super editions (standalones).
Based off the official website, the standalones are about 120,000 words long. I’ll chop 20,000 off that to leave room for shorter books (though some are way longer, with a recent one apparently hitting like 600 pages). There are 16 super editions, so that’s 1,600,000 words in the super editions.
I really don’t feel like adding the novellas into this (they’re published as a 3-in-1, so it seems like it’d be tricky to figure out their word count), the “field guides” arguably shouldn’t count since they’re not part of the actual story, and the graphic novels probably shouldn’t be judged by word count, so they’re not getting included either.
So a very low estimate for how many words are in Warriors is about 4,000,000. That’s a lot of angry feral cats. xD
@@thatonepossum5766 Cosmere is at around 3,800,000 rn, so Warrior Cats is apparently more. That series is bigger than I realized :p With Stormlight 5 releasing this december, that does make Cosmere slightly longer though

After that I followed sanderson's recommended order (if the author recommends it, I am following it) I loved warbreaker and elantris so so much, even though people say they are some of his weaker works, adored yumi, was surprised by how much I liked era two of mistborn and I won't even start on the stormlight archive. I think it’s actually somewhat hilarious that this video was recommended to me as I just finished reading the RAFO ordering of the Cosmere over the past I’d say month and a half (I spent practically every waking moment that I wasn’t doing school work reading or listening to the books). If you’re tired hearing about mistborn I recommend diving in with Tress of the Emerald Sea it’s only one book it’s shorter than mistborn 1 by about half and the story is very enjoyable
You nailed my experience with this going back to when he started. (Yes, I'm old.) If you really want some "romantasy" do Leigh Bardugo. (I swear, it doesn't matter that they're 17. Are The Wheel of Time people 17. I don't know! because... Sanderson people totally scared me away making me feel like I would have to take Sanderson on as a minor in college or grad school. I'm scared to this day.
You make me laugh mate, but yes I understand how people go over the top. Also Leigh Bardugo would be a solid choice.
yep. that's why people of reddit asking for recommendations will often say no mistborn and why mistborn was banned from some recommendation subreddits.
LOL this one is amazing man, please never stop
There's always the library. >.>
I'm really waiting for the video where he finally gets one of these book subs to recommend a book that isn't Cosmere..... just for it to be another series by Brandon Sanderson...
Great stuff- keep up the awesome vids
"Hello doctor, my nose is runny and my wife was found burning alive in her grave"
"Sounds like you need mistborn"
Mistborn is really good tho everyone should read it
Personally my favorite reading order is to pick any of his books and only ever read the ones that released after that one. I started with with Words of Radiance, which does kinda suck since it means I missed all of Kaladin's flashbacks and Mistborn, but oh well
I wonder if this guy does just sit around and talk to himself. This seems like a good friend group.
How did you find 2 other dudes who look (and sound) exactly like you??
they were hiding in his closet this entire time
There's an agency that Ryan George runs on the side.
Ryan George cloning machine technology.
After finishing the original Mistborn trilogy, I can say I get it. These books are that good. But I’m not bothering with reading in any specific order lol. I’m just having fun.
I still haven't read a Sanderson story yet. Someday though, maybe.
Have I been mispronouncing Elantris all this time? lol
Do you also pronounce is Ell-ahn-triss?
he pronounces it incorrectly, Sanderson himself pronounced it like "Eh-lahn-tris"
@@callnight1441 I've been saying Ee-lan-tris. The lan part rhymed with ran. But I looked it up and the way that you wrote it is correct
I really appreciate the (extremely slow) spoon reference
-Sci-fi
- mistborn era 4
Fucking brilliant, I laughed so hard
Gripping through and through. 10/10 vid
Now I want a compilation of all the cosmere in true chronological order
I wanted to get into adult fantasy since I haven't read any fantasy since highschool - and literally every recommendation was brandon sanderson. So I went to the bookstore and was confused because I had to look up which books to read first, and some were like, 'oh well this trilogy you don't HAVE to read but it gives context and this and this' and I'm just, confused. And then they say his magic system is super deep and complex but I just wanted a whimsical adult fantasy story - I don't need multiple series spanning hundreds of years in lore in different locations. XD Then when I asked the workers at the store they said I should read ACOTAR and I was like, "Oh?" Cause according to youtube and tiktok it's the worst thing on the planet so now I have no idea what I'm supposed to get into XD
Basically try a single book and see if you like the tone. When it comes to Brandon and the Cosmere I do not think you need to be Cosmere aware to enjoy his work. Read one of them Mistborn, Tress, Warbreaker (which is free so nothing committed but time). if you like his style then read more when you want to.
If you want to try something more satirical try Pratchett you can't really go wrong reading Guard Guards or Going Postal and see if you like that tone when you read that 1 book... if you do GO for it. He has lots of books but non you NEED to read.
If you want something a little more generic fantasy try some Forgotten Realms like maybe The Crystal Shard by Salvatore. if you like it there is a lot more there but again unnecessary if you don't.
If you want something a little shorter than Sanderson but not generic fantasy try something like Peter V Brett the Painted Man (Post apocalyptic fantasy setting) or the Dresden Files (Modern crime solving in a fantasy setting).
I could go on but basically the key is try one book don't worry about the series or how many other books that author has etc and just see if you like the feel of it. If you do most authors have a lot more for you to consume. But if they can't engage you with a book on its own... then they may not be for you and there are so many others you don't need to commit.
Once you have tried a couple and found what you like you can use that to find other series that are likely to work for you. If you like Sanderson you are likely to enjoy Jordan, if you like things more grim and dark like George Martin you may find you like Joe Abercrombie etc. But this idea that you can't enjoy something unless you have (or are willing to) watched/read it all is just foolishness.
Waiting on that review of Netflix ‘s three body problem first season with a compare / contrast of the Tencent series !
I feel like an absolute stranger as someone who's only read Alcatraz
Not to fear. I was in your boat, too, once.
I just took a week long break from RUclips but was still getting the notifications- this was the closest I came to breaking my resolve. I didn't, though!
Dude I love your content, and I love the Cosmere even more-oop. Jk. Or maybe not. . . 😆 But still, thanks for your jokes!
"You'll come around eventually." Haha XD
I mean tbf Mistborn literally has every genre in it at some point
r/fantasy felt like this about Malazan for so long to me, how the tides have changed
