I'd like to argue that Tolkien would not say his universe had no "canon," in spite of what some professed Tolkien scholars might claim. He talked about "canon" himself, saying "the canons of two mediums cannot be wholly different" when complaining about liberties taken in poor attempts to adapt his work. Sure, his lore was constantly changing in his notes throughout his life. That's not because he didn't care about consistency, it's because he was a perfectionist and would never be satisfied until his world was exactly the way he wanted it, something he could never accomplish in his lifetime. To be clear, I agree with your sentiment that the fluidity and ambiguity of his work makes it all the more immersive, as it feels like real myths and history we can only know from the various conflicting records of the scholars of later ages of the world. I just bristle whenever people say his work has no "canon," especially since that argument has been used to excuse the bastardization of his lore by untalented hacks.

I really love both but what I love about the modern take is how storytellers embrace the idea that what is different and beyond our comprehension isn’t necessarily harmful. I’m listening to the Indigenous’ History of the United Stares by Roxanne Ortiz and I keep being amazed by how the colonialists kept insisting that they needed to wipe out American Indigenous peoples even when Indigenous nations showed no interest in harming the colonialists. They said to the leaders of states that they wanted peace, they wanted to come to a compromise, that they would embrace and help colonialists if they asked. But the mindset of the colonists, especially those in authority, was that the only way to live on this land and work it was to destroy Native Americans’ lives, homes, and often times wipe out as many of their nation, including women and children, as possible. Colonialists acted on the mindset that the only way to live was to conquer or be conquered, they had this fear of not doing things their way, what was different had to inherently be evil and malicious even when it showed no signs of I’ll intention. But more modern fantasy and sci-fi books I’ve read show stories where different ideas, peoples, and things are treated with curiosity and care rather than violence. We still have the urge to own whatever interests us, but I’ve seen that being challenged as well. I just love the possibility that we as a society could treat things we don’t understand with respect and curiosity instead of viscously destroying it. We could practice peace just by entertaining the idea, showing different ways of interacting with new and challenging things that aren’t reflexive aggression. And we could show how that’s brave and honorable instead of equivocating peace and kindness to cowardice, timidity, meekness, and weakness.

I actually enjoyed it and found it not only informative and expanding, but also entertaining. To anyone starting or considering starting The Silmarillion. The beginning is a bit slow, but things really pick up when the Noldor return to Beleriand. He’s right that the names can be confusing, but there are genealogical trees in the Appendices of the book, as well as The Return of the King. I also highly recommend Robert Foster’s The Complete Guide to Middle Earth as a companion. It’s an encyclopedia/glossary that allows you to easily look up any name/place/term that you’re confused about or have forgotten. Good luck and enjoy!

Here's an explanation of every term in those cake paragraphs cake - one's butt rizzler - someone with rizz, or someone conventionally attractive Gronk and Livy's - Baby Gronk and Livy are two internet celebreties. I think their drama an stuff is like celebrety slop for zoomers. jaw - People care deeply about their jawlines, especially in the looksmaxxing communities. xanthous corridor of liminality - This is a reference to the Backrooms, a creative writing project and liminal space. Most famous through the Kanepixels series, or the slop blender CGI videos. Fazbear's Pizza - Fazbear's Pizza is a location in the video game, book, and movie series known as Five Night's at Freddy's. Sir Beast - likely a reference to Mr. Beast mewer - A behavior in the looksmaxing community where doing weird stuff with your tounge supposedly sharpens your jawline. Semantic drift from people outside of the community has extended its meaning to a motion where one shows off their jawline by moving their finger across it. sus - Reference to the game Amoung Us, a social deduction game. Shortening of suspicious. Reddit - Social Media platform -core - Suffix denoting a specifc style or aestetic. See, for example, cottagecore. rizz - See rizzler Oofhio - Oof is a sound featured in the video game Roblox and a common meme sound. Ohio is a place commonly memed, particularly in the phrase "Only in Ohio", meaning something so wild it would only work in a world completely divorced from our own--Ohio. Sigma - Shortening of sigma male, a manosphere term denoting a male outside of the usual alpha and beta system. Originally from just Alpha, like the wolf, named after the letter. When used to describe human men, other letters were added to denote more types of men. ick - An ick is something that turns one off from a partner. When the honeymoon stage ends, people see flaws in their partner, and people, not understanding this, think they are just dealbreakers and are icky, giving them a visceral reaction, not realizing it is just their mental model of their partner needing to shift. Texting Minors - Adult relations with minors is a meme for some reason. Gooner - Someone who does a specific hedonistic behavior. jelqing - I don't already know about this one, and from two secouns of looking at the search results I don't want to know more. Relating to genitalia. Sub surfer - shortening of subway surfers, a fast paced mobile game often placed alongsie another video to maximize attention. nuts - could refer to multiple different things, the context does not give enough information. My guess is it is a reference to "Deez nuts" jokes, where one says deez nuts before adding onto it to make it mean "these nuts" NPC - Short for non-player charecter, a charecter in a video game that is not a player. Used to mean a boring person, just like an NPC would be boring. edged - Edging is a practice, originally from a sexual practice, which was quickly semantically bleached to mean doing anything while avoiding the payoff. For example, what one could assume to be a shaggy dog joke without a punchline could be described as linguistic edging or something like that. Tomato Town - Location in Fortnite, most famous from a line in a meme song- "12 kills on the board right now, just wiped out Tomato Town" Beta - Short for beta male, a man inferior to an Alpha Male. See also, Simga. Looksmaxin - Shortening of Looksmaxxing, a community focused on maximizing attractiveness through things like mewing, or in some cases, more dangerous measures. The -maxxing suffix has has its meaning bleached, along with -pilled, for example, most famously in the meme "Friendpilled visitmaxxer" Simps - No, not the Phinias and Ferb song! A simp, which I believe is short for simpleton, is someone who likes women so much that they will disregard their standards for their affection. goon - See gooner Gigachad - Someone better than a chad, or an attractive man. fantum tax - The practice of stealing your friends' food. Fantum, a content creator, made many skits about stealing his friends' food. goofy ah mogus- Combination of goofy ah, which just means goofy, and ah mogus, which sounds like Amoung Us--see sus. thicc - Thick, usually referencing someone's butt. -ussy - Suffix coming from a word that will probably get this comment blocked. slay - A word meaning good, coming from slays. For example, "That outfit slays!", often used as an adjective, like "That outfit is so slay" Sisyphus - A meme in which someone does something repeatedly, like Sisyphus does. Often combined with one must imagine X happy, from the ending line to the book The Myth of Sisyphus, the philisophical text that created ubsurdism. Ratio'd - Being Ratioed is to have a sister comment have more likes than the parent comment, for example, a comment on an unpopular RUclips video having more likes than the video itself. Nathan B - Short for Nathaniel B, which according to KnowYourMeme comes from a viral video of a bad freestyle where "You can't handle me" is rhymed with "Hold up, you ain't Nathanial B" skibididopdopdopyesyesskibididopdopyesyesskibididopdopdopyesyesskibidiskibidiskibidi - A transcription from a nonsense song from the Skibidi Toilet meme. demure - A word re-popularized in a new ironic context. I have only ever seen it being used by people who don't know what demure actually means, so they just say it for funsies. toilet - See skibididopdopdopyesyesskibididopdopyesyesskibididopdopdopyesyesskibidiskibidiskibidi iPads - From iPad kids, kids who spend all of their time on their iPads while watching slop. Brainrotted - You watched the video, see also, everything above. Slop - Content, usually AI generated, that is low quality and instantly forgotten.

I honestly read prefaces and introductions because I need them to understand the Author and get context for the book. I just would rather have it, as it makes everything else easier to comprehend. Unless it's some bad preface, like the one preface for my Barnes and Noble classics edition for Paradise Lost did everything possible it could to hide the meaning, but I'm kind of a specialist in Enlightenment Philosophy and history, so I could understand it. Like it was just like, "Science debunked Genesis, so Satan's the good guy," Which is kind of a perfect metaphor for today, when Satan's a genocidal maniac, and mad at God for giving him the will to disobey him, and is taking it out on us. That's what the book's about, but the preface is like, "Satan's the good guy." He's not... and he can't be. The book's thesis is brilliant, if you truly dive into it. God is good. That's why we worship Him. And it foreshadows Postmodernism, and how power dynamics would undermine reason, through reason. And that's why you need faith, is to uphold the good.

I don't follow the rules of my time. Basically, I'm going back in the other direction. Or forward, if you might say, to a blending of many disciplines. And I don't listen to the outside voices--like I don't look to market trends, but just write about what I feel in a particular moment. Well, actually, I am a Republican. It's the Monarchists that are making the rules, to dumb down the public, so they can't function as a republic anymore. Proficient literacy makes a better voter, and safer republic. But I could definitely see how people could misconstrue Fairyland as Monarchist Propaganda, but it's basically just a semi-autobiographical mythopoeia, and nothing really about politics at all, save delusions about current affairs. It's also challenging to write, which is why I write it. I'm very adept as an author, and very practiced, so writing easy stuff doesn't interest me. I need to challenge myself. And so, you got Fairyland---a Modern Mythology of Guardian Angels fighting the Thirteen Kings. Which is really just the conflict within myself, as all the characters are reflections of the good and bad within me. Like Paul says, "We wrestle not with flesh and blood, but with Principalities, Powers and Airs" or Jesus said, "Remove not the mote in your brother's eye, but remove the log in your own eye first." It's about fighting myself, and my own evil... not the world's around me. Or really any political platform at all... I don't really have one outside of the Constitution and Humans Rights Charter.
